Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
To be fair, Biyu is *three* right now. She needs love, care and attention (which she does get).
But age *three* is not best time to built a social relationship. And it's not as if we have no relationship with her at all or she doesn't know who Ling Qi is. Ling Qi is currently somewhere between 'cool big Sis' and 'magic ice fairy songstress'.
What...

The earlier you can get your social indoctrination in the better. That's the literal basis of the familial unit. By creating deep, positive emotional bonds before she is fully mentally capable it becomes much more difficult for her to turn back on that later.

Mate... I literally give examples of things that happened in story.

Also, I'm not sure what your point is? Unless you think this thread is going to cut off our family completely there is no option of not spending time with them. Consequently, as our time will be spent with them regardless, we might as well make sure that time is well spent.

Our mother will be part of the clan, our sister will be part of the clan, they are already showing our face to the outside world. This was an in story thing where CRX talked with us about or mother bringing in her prostitute friends. They already affect things, they directly affect our ability to serve CRX.

You pretending they don't need to be as good as we can make them is the real sentiment here. You think we can afford to lug along dead weight? If we don't put in the time to make our family useful they will forever be a burden. Which we cannot afford.

There will never be a better time to get in with our sister, there will never be a better time to get in with our mother.

Even if we decide to mind wipe them this time we have spent with them is not coming back.
You mentioned things that happened in story, but none of them could be logically followed by your point about we were gonna cultivate them or what not. I covered your individuals arguments already.

Our time spent with them doesn't cost us AP, this is the whole point of this vote... No one here is saying that we should wipe them from existence / ignore them.

Us "lugging them around" is very much something we can afford, doesn't so is pocket change to us, if you think they're currently a burden that's on you (which is ironic of you to say since spending AP on them would mechanically burden us with them). And again, there's nothing that you're saying that actually explain how we could make them useful, you're just wishfully thinking that us doing this while somehow make them a useful resource.

Now is definitely the worse time, we're like a college student that has to desperately cram.

I think one of the benefits with the family option is improved social links with Qingge, Biyu, Zhengui, Sixiang, and Hanyi. This could help our spirits when combined with our domain, which will only become stronger. There should be numerous other benefits to the family option, but this seems to be one of the likeliest.

Another super term thing to note is that we will likely eventually "outgrow" Zhengui.

Him having a good relationship with Biyu starting in her childhood at that point will make them better partnersm

This is a really hard choice for me. To me we have basically gained an ap because challenges no longer cost ap and are in the background (I was an advocate for challenging as much as possible). So spending that ap with family would make it a wash. However, I honestly believed that we would not make it to the goals set for unless something changed. Keeping that bonus ap would go a long way to meeting our goals and thus building a better future for our family. For now I will vote

[X] While you will be present as much as you can, your household cannot be top priority yet. (Status quo)

I may change this later but for right now this is my gut feeling.

"That's right! You disappeared and I had to change like this cause… cause…" Hanyi faltered in the middle of her tirade, seeming to curl in on herself. Her final words came out in almost a whisper. "...It was lonely, you big idiot."
What an adorable friendship.

[X] In the future, devote more time to your household and your family. (-1AP in future turns)

Already our mother has broken through Already she has taken control of the household. Already our sister shows potential. Already our interaction with our family shapes our Way.

This is what has happened when we devoted time to our family. It is reasonable to assume that will continue.

Much like with all our other friends it takes time and effort to grow them into useful resources. But they always prove useful.

This is me referencing how devoting our time to other social activities has benefited us. Also, following directly from the vote and my post.

You're wrong. They're costing us right now.

This was an in story thing where CRX talked with us about or mother bringing in her prostitute friends. They already affect things, they directly affect our ability to serve CRX.

Every time we vote for a social action with them we could have voted to spend it with someone else. The vote just before this one was between a more in depth look at Hanyi or meeting our family first.

You think your Lex Luthor, but really you're Superman.

You think if we just leave our family alone that things will turn out fine, that we can afford to pull them along. But what happens when someone decides to kidnap them? Or enters a contract with Mom that fucks us over? Or turns our sister against us? Or poisons our family like almost happened to ZhenGui? Or uses the fact that we've got a prostitute mother and prostitute servants to discredit us on the social circuit?

You thinks that gonna be cheap to deal with? You think that's not a cost?

Get real. Our family is a weakness. Until we make them a strength that will always be the case.

I'm fine with spending plenty of time with family, but 1 AP every single turn is a bit much. She has friends and a liege to pay attention to as well.

Thought I should actually give reactions now.

"There's a bit more to it than that, even if you can't quite tell yet," Ling Qi replied wryly. "Are you done for the night?"

"I believe so," Ling Qingge answered.

"You shouldn't be. If you stay like that your gonna disappear and make Big Sis sad," Hanyi commented idly, not looking up from her little project. The young spirit blew gently on the flower in her hands, sending scraps of the plant matter still clinging to the fragile sculpture in her hands fluttering away.

There we have the bluntness of a child and the worldliness of a spirit connected to Endings. She speaks the truth though. The purpose of Qingge's cultivation is that, unless Qi's own life is cut short, Qi and probably Biyy will outlive their mother by centuries. We wish to extend the time we have with our precious mother as far as we can manage, the paltry material cost doesn't matter.

"Mother," Ling Qi replied quietly. "Zhengui is family too. I know you can't understand him yet, but he's as smart as Hanyi or I," she shot the spirit beside her an unimpressed look at the scoff that elicited. "I raised him from an egg. He's my... little brother, and this is kinda like his birthday, you know?"

Ling Qingge gave her a long, searching look, and Ling Qi shifted uncomfortably. Searching her words and the tone they had come out in, she had a feeling that she had implied the wrong thing. She almost thought to correct herself but… that wasn't a tangle she wanted to voice aloud.

"I'm missing something again aren't I? Why does the idea that the big goof is more like your kid than your brother bother you so much?" Sixiang asked silently.

Oof, finally the unspoken problems that Qi has with the taking the role of Mother for herself. I'm unsure what the details of this mental knot are, but this is something that should be handled sooner or later. Maybe Six can try to bring it up again later.

She raised a hand to wave, carefully allowing her own aura to rise for his notice. "Zhengui! Get down here! I brought everyone to see you!"

"Big Sister?" Two voices echoed out from the Xuan Wu, and to Ling Qi's surprise, and the widening of her mother's eyes. The words were not immaterial. Gui's voice was a deep rumble now, and Zhen's a smooth and loud hiss. "Big Sister!"

"Lil turtle?" Biyu whispered in her arms, eyes wide in both fear and wonder. The little girl looked up at Ling Qi then and seemed to take comfort in her smile.

No, Biyu. Big Turtle. Super nice that Zhengui can be understood now, Biyu will like talking to him.

Before she could say anything to that effect however, she felt a churning in her dantian, and frost spread across the grass beneath her feet as Hanyi launched herself back into the physical world with a mighty warcry.

"YOU DUMMY!" the little spirit yelled, reforming into the world with her hands on her hips atop the platform that Zhengui had stopped in front of. "You were asleep for like, forever! How can you call that fast!"

"Huh?" Gui replied cluelessly, looking cross eyed down his own blunt snout as he peered down at her. "Who are… Hanyi?"

"That's right! You disappeared and I had to change like this cause… cause…" Hanyi faltered in the middle of her tirade, seeming to curl in on herself. Her final words came out in almost a whisper. "...It was lonely, you big idiot."

Zhengui, you have missed some serious shit. I know you just woke up, but Hanyi really needs you right now. Be her friend / brother / .... nephew I guess if Hanyi is a sister. That's been fucking with me since I made that connection.

They stayed out there for much of the afternoon, and by the time they returned home, Zhengui once more snugly stored away in her dantian. His presence certainly strained her qi a great deal more now, but it was a comfort to have him back.

Oof, even more qi strain, I don't think we would be advised to take a fourth spirit for quite a while unless it's a particularly notable one. I want to have our great reserves again.

After Biyu had been put to bed, as she had been about to leave, her Mother had come to her and asked that she stay and instruct her.

By the time the sun rose the next day, Ling Qingge had awakened. Her cultivation was a fragile thing, in need of constant reinforcement, but her Mother had taken the first step. It seemed like she wouldn't be losing her any time soon after all.

I think both Hanyi's blunt criticism of her work ethic, and perhaps feeling the full power of TRF coursing through her body and making her more solid and unyielding than ever before in her life, made her go "fuck this, I am going to do my best for my daughters". Good to see this, kinda curious if Qi's observations of Qingge's spiritual leakage is only due to age.

On the vote, boy is that a tough goddamn sacrifice to make for family. It's really a lot of AP that will probably mostly cut into doing the lesser archive arts and the various housekeeping things we do like sect stuff and exploration maybe. I honestly can't decide right now, but I want to at least make a vote on this.

  1. One we made a commitment we should actually follow through it to the best of our capability.
  2. We are at the point in our lives where crunch time is the most important and since QM flat out told us our relationships are being maintained I would rather not believe he is lying as so many apparently are.
  3. I rate Ling Qingge the same as the other people we care about so if current time isn't enough for her it follows it also isn't enough for them upon which we are fucked so not voting as if it was true.
  4. In a narrative sense I am happy with how much screentime they have in comparison to Xiulan, Meizhen, Li Suyin, Su Ling, Cai and Hanyi/Zeqing so either the quest would be even slower or they should show up less neither which I am the slightest interested in.
  5. It would be pretty shitty to not focus on doing our best when Cai is under such pressure and I don't want Ling Qi to be that kind of person.
  6. The main problem which was not telling what we were doing is already being dealt with, had a big step this chapter even.
  7. Also got annoyed how the arguments of the other side boil down to fearmongering and wanting to have their cake and eat it too.

If we take the cost to make family interaction a priority, we'll be in a wildly stronger emotional position than any of our Scion peers.

Meizhen and Cai have awful relationships with their families. That isn't a product of their strength, and I don't mean it as a cautionary example, it's just a factual observation.

We're trading action slots for the exotic 'resources' of family competence. We can speculate about how that can enpower, and shape Ling Qi, but a higher emotional intelligence is a solid expectation.

I legit don't see the point of this phrase

I think I saw this speech from Lex Luthor in Justice League once

Well

He is a man of great wisdom and talent

It was a reference. :p
To you even.

Edit:
To clarify, it was based on Superman always having to save his love interest/family/etc. At least in part because he doesn't put anywhere near the effort into keeping then safe as their kidnapping history would seem to require.

Luthor, on the other hand, made the more utilitarian decision of murdering his family (depending on continuity and for unrelated reasons).

Yes? That doesn't have anything to do with making them "an useful resource" like you seem to think.

Even if we made her yellow a year earlier it wouldn't change anything, so us helping get to red doesn't help your point, especially when we did it without needing to invest AP.

Those social activities benefited us because we were interacting with people with their own individual power, our family can't compete with that, nor should they be expected to.

Generally when we vote for them it's to have them on screen, the opportunity cost is inconsequential as far as I can tell (feel free to give a concrete example of when it wasn't). So them even being an option is somehow costly in your mind and you solution to that is to spend 1 AP a turn on them... Yep, seems perfectly logical to me.

So I'm a good guy who think he's a bad guy? Thanks? Not really making much sense here buddy.

That's some insane level of paranoia, that's a nice try at fear mongering btw. For one we're not leaving our family alone... Things are just gonna stay the same as they are now (notice how we still got an event with them even though that's the case). How will spending time with them make it harder to kidnap them? Our mom isn't gonna get strong regardless of what we do and us spending the AP isn't training her, the increase in cultivation she'll gain will have marginal effects. Our mom isn't gonna pass anything important without our stamp on it, if someone was foolish enough to claim that our mortal clan member signature had any real value after they'd maliciously fooled them Cai would just make a call to the ministry and they'd get fucked. How do you figure someone will turn a toddler against us? If people want to kill them they'll just do it when we're not there... Discrediting them that way isn't gonna be changed by spending time with them.

So you're basically motivated by baseless fears? And again, your issue is that you seem to think that spending the 1 AP will magically fix issues, but you can't give any practical way to how any of it would be accomplished, you just have a vague notion that us doing this will have remove all their weaknesses, without having any concrete basis in reality for how that would be done.

Though I hope it would be more than just "devote time" - like having our family meet our non-Bai friends for example (meaning more interaction with them too).
