*magpie valiantly tries to not look at the pile of dead bodies*
*fails and looks anyway*
:V

Let's finish the current projects first.
We'll get a few more piles like this one by that time anyway, so these can be chopped up freely, Imo.
I'm not saying we should skip around, I'm asking ahead of time how long specific things will take.

I want an Uber Treant. I want a Plant Dragon to guard the Tree of the Dawn Age. Etc.

Hey @DragonParadox, could you be willing to allow Azema into Chameleon next level?
She isn't human and she doesn't have Able Learner, but IMO it would fit her so well...
The ultimate trickster class, right there!

@Artemis1992 I was going to suggest that she go for Bloodclaw Master (She can qualify after 1 warblade level) but fluffwise it doesn't fit so well with recent developments.

Ardent Dilletante is decent, and certainly fluffy. I'll vote for that if I haven't forgotten it by then, even though the first level is a very dead level.

Hmmmmmmmmmm.

Perhaps for something a bit.. spicier?

Vigilante – d20PFSRD

Specifically the cabalist?

(or magical child)
I'd prefer something that advanced her Cleric casting.
One dead level is fine, but more would suck.

BTW, ya'll might not have noticed that DP said we could use the Fungal Forge and mulched up corpses to produce Mushroom Golems rather than having to craft them the traditional way.

Hmm... that does make sense and it's not like it would be unbalancing compared to all the other things you have available. Sure you can go Chameleon.
Fantastic! Thank you, it's great!
And Chameleon isn't really broken anyway. It's main trick is early access to spells, but considering her current 7 levels she won't actually be getting anything early.

When she levels up I'll write up spell choices and spells learnt (from her personal funds, by spending time in the Scholarum) for Arcane and Divine, but I expect her to spend more time as a Divine spellcaster anyway.
She wanted to be one IC, right? Wasn't that why we made her a concept Cleric?

Well the new system was bound to have some downsides. we're trading micromanaging for the possibility of much longer times to research anything. There are people in the thread, specifically at least @TotallyNotEvil (If I remember correctly?), that wanted research to take much longer than it was taking in general anyway, so it's not all bad. This development might make things more enjoyable for some of the players. :)

Bit busy at work so I'm gonna have to delegate this one.

[X] Azel

As for the rolls, well, I'm not mad about those. What we're doing there is game changing, like extremely game changing.

Once the weirwoods are fire proof that gives the O.G.'s an in with the Plane of Fire, a whole new plane, away from the Inbred Ice Zombies, where they can consolidate even more power.

The Fungal pods will open up whole new avenues for our production lines. Once hard to acquire materials (provided they are 'organic' in nature) can be synthesized on mass.

Either way either one of these succeeding is going to be a kick in the nuts to our enemies, so we can be damn sure they're probably going to be trying to fuck it up at some point.

It's not merely a matter of rolling to determine success of finding a piece of information. In real research, there are dead-ends, false positives, happy accidents, and explosive disasters. If it was simply a matter of crit'ing on a given Knowledge check we wouldn't have to research anything, because I would string together enough buffs to push the researchers skill checks into Epic territory and call it a day.

Honestly this. I would be baffled if we managed to figure out either of these two things in a month. Growing conseuqnce free fiend blood and making age old weirdwoods fireproof should honestly take years. I think DP has already been too generous to be honest. These are not new problems we're trying to solve here.

I'd prefer something that advanced her Cleric casting.

Chameleon does advance Cleric spellcasting :D
Check out the Chameleon class: it gets a small number of spells per day, but it gets them from ANY divine list.
It is therefore excellent for melee fighters like her, because it allows her to get those Paladin spells quickly. It also opens up ALL Domain-specific spells, as well as spells that are lower-level for classes like Adept or Healer.

She will also be able to cast Arcane Spells (choose in the morning if she wants arcane or divine). Those are even better (there are more arcane PrCs that offer spells a level or two early, and Chameleon gets them all) but she will have to learn them and scribe them in her spellbook. This will require downtime, and a second level in Chameleon (she can use her level 2 floating feat to learn any spell for one day by picking Extra Spell, and then scribe it into her spellbook and pick another spell the next day).

Seriously, go read the Chameleon description and maybe a Chameleon handbook. She'll never be a real primary caster, but she certainly will be useful!

Honestly, had it been only the lenght alone, with no other factors mixed in, I would have been quite content.

The problem is, DP already ruled the lenght of Fire!Heart Tree research as 2-3 weeks before this.

He then applied the new system, catering to those wanting longer research-times.
Cue bad time for someone *cough* very much anticipating it finishing and relying on an established number in their judgments for the given action }:C

I would still prefer research-times measuring at most in 2 months, considering just how much resources (Epic library, full memory of Old Gods Collective through Philosopher's Tree, wide array of research-helpers in face of Scholarum mages and actual researches that can get Epic rolls on knowledge checks through buffs, unlimited finances...) we can put into any given research.
Goalposts of real world simply cannot apply to what we have here :/

If you put more researchers on it, you can certainly finish it next month.

We can still research in dead-end directions.
That's not something that can be avoided.

[ ] Plan "Nuanced Appeals"
-[ ] Lord Paenyl is a proud man, with reason to resent both you and the kind of people you truck with. Or that is to say, the kind they were before you started to truck with them. It is clear in precedent and demonstration that you tolerate little the service of unrepentant (in the legal sense) slavers, murderers and thieves. Each of these people do now take up service in your name adhering to the very letter of the law, and have all obviously done well for it. But if it was merely success or the rewards obtained from that success that mattered in the Admiral's eyes, he would not be so antagonistic towards you and your cause. Merely offering magic and wealth will sway him little, if not principles alone then goals that stretch far enough to change hands father to son keep him from viewing promise to see his family rich or honored or even to have his leg restored as little more than an insult. - Establishing character traits.
-[ ] Not to say his family couldn't stand to benefit in all those respects, but only after an understanding is reached. - If he plays ball, obviously like all minions we turn from the other side to ours, they will see the fruits of service are sweet indeed.
-[ ] Your approach is manifold. If needed, merely the stones needed to lay a foundation, or if possible a more lasting agreement. We will come seeking an audience with bread and salt, customary in Westeros if not Braavos. This signals multiple things. First, it is an ironic twist to our ordering of the public death of a prominent salt magnate who careful observation (or direct ties) will make clear was tied to us in some manner. Two, it acknowledges his families trade links to Westeros and the reasons therein, cementing that in principles we are alike if not the same, as well as our own binding ties to the West in one stroke. Three, it is traditional for the Lord offering Guest Right to make available the bread and salt, not the other way around. This is Viserys showing that he has overturned tradition and that in any hall he enters he is King, and it is to him to offer guarantee of polite and civil conduct to those he treats with. Never is his life placed in an enemy's hand, they exist merely at his own leisure. - This is to show a canny opponent that every single action we take is measured and thought out far in advance of how they could imagine responding to it.
-[ ] Upon obtaining an audience, you will cut to the quick as you think that Lord Paenyl will appreciate it. You will be civil if somewhat cool, but change tact if he might start listening further to reason. Viserys started his time in Braavos as a practically penniless exile, reviled the world over and painted with the same brush as his maddened father, West and East, regarded as little more than a curiosity at the best of times, and a hated enemy at the worst, for all that he had done no wrong. - This is just building up our story here. We knew nothing of him a week ago. He likely only has rumor to trade between people who dislike or adore us to go on. Let us give him some of the truth to disguise the bitter from the sweet.
-[ ] Of course we will not lie, some men in our service have committed crimes before, but in each instance those worst perpetrators were punished duly under the law as it was written or drawn for the purpose as the case may be by our own hand, keeping in mind always precedent and the fiber of individual character. We have seen slavers who have committed atrocities hung and sellswords who swung their banners up and down for different masters, the same banners who have dipped in wane in like for countless generations, into raising ones out of loyalty to us, for all their uncanny foresight that soon their way of life would be completely unfeasible in the near future. - This is the follow through, yes we employ former sellswords, cutthroats, and in some cases men who had trafficked in the slave trade, but we do not at present truck with any of those sorts. It is more accurate to say they truck with Dragons, and in order to have the privilege change was indeed in order.
-[ ] Such foresight was not available to the corsairs who sailed the Narrow Sea when we first arrived in what would be known as Torturer's Deep. No mighty armies came at our command. No vast trade empires we had forged with a mind honed as sharp as Valyrian Steel, owed in no small part due to our experiences in Braavos. And while our magics had seen us through many a peril, they were not the earth shattering and sky cutting wonders they are now. They had merely hope for a better tomorrow and trust in our given word to buoy spirit that they were not passing into the hand from one maddened spell-weaver into that of another. - Acknowledges that we have changed mightily, points to our earlier comment about being painted with the same brush as our father, but other than power and character displayed, also seeks to contrast that there wasn't any reason for these men to expect more than the cutting board or the drink before we came, and helps sell the punch for the next statement.
-[ ] In a few short years, they have helped us toward ending slavery in Western Essos. They have helped us gather the wealth and influence in farflung ports that many men would hesitate to imperil themselves sailing towards for both legitimate profit and personal loyalty not just to a King who has promised them much, but a cause greater than themselves. Our fleet as much as our army or the branches of government are filled with people who have been ally and enemy, those who counted themselves loyal merely because of our name and the circumstances of our birth, and because we have shown them that our way is better and more enlightened. - Proof of the concept upon which we hope people like him will eventually fall under, instead of the knife or before churning waters as the Sealord suggested.
-[ ] If dishonest men can become traders and taxmen and soldiers or even bureaucrats, what could men of august lines, renowned for their good character and honor do with the right push and placed in the right position at the right time? - Here lies the bones of our offer. We have established our character throughout this conversation. We're not just someone who kills people who gets in our way, no. We want it all. We want the skill and loyalty of those who once thought better than us, where many men in our relative positions would think nothing of a curmudgeon who hadn't the wit or guile to approach in any other manner but war and treachery.
-[ ] We have offered more than mercy and glory or wealth and honor to those who might have once chosen to oppose us before, more than false promises. We have offered a means to change the situation the world finds itself in. We are all of us part of a spinning sphere alight with the glow of a thousand flames, and it takes all working in concert to not only keep it spinning, but to keep that sphere from burning out. Join now, never, or later, you are part of this and it will not stop for your sole benefit, or any other. - The flat truth, once again, to show that with every move we have taken, the scale has merely grown. We have gone beyond petty grudges or grievances, our every action changing the paradigm upon which we all find ourselves.
-[ ] The only way to determine if those who you condemn might have genuinely turned out for the better, or if my words are nothing more than lies, is to take a chance and see from the forefront the truth of the matter for oneself. - If they respond well to this, we have probably gotten them, if not now then soon, after Pentos.
-[ ] Of course a man sailing to war for Braavos' sake should not do so upon one leg, so without artifice or any demand or promise for his later conduct, we offer to regenerate his leg, so that when off to war Braavos goes, it has its admiral to see it through. - Sealing the deal, with all hope.

Of course at any point he could prove to be intractable, in which case we can freely dispense with him, but this is decent for the general thrust of our goal here. And hopefully a bit of a character moment for Viserys as well.

The best thing about Chameleon?
After 7 levels of Chameleon, she can qualify for Dweomerkeeper very easily! Prerequisite skills are almost achieved already, getting both divine and arcane spells at once requires only Chameleon 7, and thanks to Chameleon she can get Substitute Domain (lasting 1 day/level) to get the Magic domain. The required metamagic and crafting feat should be easy too (only the crafting feat is a real cost).

Now I don't think that she will ever reach that level during the quest, but imagine a level 20 Azema with Outsider 6/Cloistered Concept Cleric 1/Chameleon 7/Dweomerkeeper 6.
She would have Chameleon Arcane AND Divine casting up to level 10 (so 6th level spells, with access to a selection of high-level ones cast as 6th level spells), as well as level 4 Concept Cleric spellcasting.
Why go to Dweomerkeeper 6 and not stop at 3? Because with Versatile Spellcaster (unlocked by Mantle of Spells) and Extra Spell/Extra Slot, she can learn Limited Wish (she doesn't qualify for bloodwish) and cast it 2/day without paying its XP cost. Great!
That's a bit too much cheese though. More reasonably, she can cast Shalantar's Delicate Disc 2/day without paying for material components, or Mage's Private Sanctum or something.
Make a killing selling it cheaper than the competition can afford!

More reasonably, in a few centuries I can see Azema being an Outsider 6/Cloistered Concept Cleric 1/Chameleon 10/Warblade 3.
6th level casting in 2 classes and some very decent melee when properly buffed (especially if she takes DMM: Persist and Extra Turning).

EDIT: To be clear, none of these builds are especially good for high-level PCs. She'll need ways to defend herself from dispelling at the very least, and she'll have little staying power: one or two encounters and her buff spells risk running out!
But they certainly aren't bad either. And she'll be very versatile day-to-day, which is nice for her.

One dead level is fine, but more would suck.

We want the skill and loyalty of those who once thought better than us, where many men in our relative positions would think noting of a curmudgeon who hadn't the wit or guile to approach in any other manner but war and treachery.

Holy fuck man this is longer than some updates.

NICU!

I like your passion for this dude.

Technically, it could be if we were willing to do enough divination.

The problem here is that the shift from the old system from new is a change a bit too jarring. In some civ quests you have actions that take a certain amount of turns (unless you criticize-fail). The system works and it is not the least bit realistic. It is a quest so some aspects of realism can and should be thrown out the window. Dead-end research is a thing but that should only apply when a character crit-fails or rolls below the DC like now.

Honestly I am not a fan of the new system. The old one, to me, was easier to follow. Have them work on it these days. Get help from supernatural insight etc etc. But I will adapt and frankly now that we have worked out a few kinks the solution seems simple. Hire and recruit more researchers. We have endless planes to choose from so we grab a couple from places and then we spam them. Or better yet with the 1500 HD we make a couple new researchers. Seems simple enough though irritating.
