Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

I... think we should do it. We're a shadow spymaster type. Having a bunch of (former) courtesans on retainer is a good thing to have, for various reasons.

We can spare this expense.
It's not about the money - from that perspective it is a pretty negligible expense all-told. The real downside with this is the reputation effect. Basically this means that anyone who wants can accurately claim that we employ (ex-)whores as our household staff, which doesn't look especially great. Presumably, we care at least a little bit about our reputation, so this is a nonzero cost.

I'm not saying it is not worth doing, mind you - just that the cost associated with this decision isn't the 2 YSS.

[X] Reject Mother's request, allow her to look for potential hires in the village though

The stakes are too high for this. She's going to have to move on.

its better to do it now. when we move out they will have cleared their name with good work or we will be strong enough not to care

In this case it is pretty much - Political rep and initial house rep. For... well frankly just some +Mom rep and some probably loyal but probably not much else mortal servants. If we had some luck rolls for this then it would turn into a ??? bonus scenario. But the chance for that is so low that it might not even be there.

But well, I think it is worth it anyway.

Hmm, trying to look at things from Ling Qi's perspective...

A lot of us are, I think, rather inclined to ignore the potential rep costs because we don't really consider that kind of thing important.

For Ling Qi otoh her mother's profession has been a source of non-significant shame and conflict. It's not something she particularly likes. I could see her wanting to do her best to distance herself and her family from that.

"You are perceptive," Ling Qingge replied with a self deprecating smile, her eyes resting on the table. "It is a selfish request, but… do you think it may be possible that I might hire some acquaintances from Tonghou? Good young ladies all, whose families merely fell into misfortune I assure you.

So we get :

1) people we know are loyal.
2) ex-prostitute (which are great for spying)
3) an happy mom.
4) an happy CRX from helping the downtrodden.
5) people we know are not spies for other nobles.
6) future lootboxes from the idiots who say something to our face ablut our prostitute household.

And it's supposedly a choice ?

Even ignoring the moral aspect to it (which we definitely shouldn't) and trying to field some sort of rationalization for how we need to shield our nascent house from the reputation hit (which I don't actually buy), you inevitably kinda run into the issue that even remotely legitimizing the stigmatization these women face ultimately still reflects back on our own mom and even Biyu and ultimately us.
Buying into this kinda thing to be personally shielded from it ultimately doesn't work out in the long term.

I can kind of see it as a decision coming from personal emotional trauma and wanting to shield herself from that, but ultimately I don't think it would be a healthy way to handle the issue, so I can't bring myself to actually vote for it.

This is the first thing our mother has asked of us that isn't a trivial cost, given the potential hit to our reputation. I don't think it's wise to establish, in our first major decision here, that we'll only be nice and helpful to our mother when it costs us nothing.

If we're so obsessed with power and reputation that we deny our loved ones happiness, we've sent Ling Qi down the wrong path.

Huh.

It sounds like Qingge might not know where it really comes from, given old family stories losing that detail. As for "weirdness" that Ling Qi could have a hunch on; it could be someone in the Ling ancestry was a crafter cultivator of some form, a barbarian bone carver, or a simple but somewhat powerful cultivator. Not sure.

Also thank god, Biyu is great. I liked the food commentary.

As to Mum's request. One, oh god finally she made a request thank god. As could be expected I'll accept.

Anyway there is some stuff to this request as Ling Qi noticed. The cost is immediately obvious, though it varies from person to person given that courtseanship and prostitution are viewed differently in the Empire than the modern world, barring Ling Qi's views on the matter. There's potential for cultural gaffes from different clans and the like. The flip side is loyalty as people have mentioned, though it wouldn't quite be from buying it like this and would more truly spring from treating them well after we get them here.

There is a more complicated nature of it. As @Erebeal mentioned Ling Qi's own unspoken biases on the matter of prostitution and her poor experience with that world are in play. There is also a little bit of mortal perspective on how Tonghou is doing, possibly. Another is that as archangis mentioned they are likely so insignificant that they are not going to be spies, which is a thing we'll have to be aware of going forward.

It will possibly put Ling Qi into a "have to adapt" headspace for a bit, given she has the aforementioned poor experience.

Get to help some acquaintances out of a bad situation and benefit at the same time? Heck yea.
I wouldn't be surprised to learn some have helped us in the past when mom was busy and Ling Qi or Biyu needed watching. Good stuff, good stuff.

And two yellow stones is like, chump change right now anyway.

Loyalty >>> Reputation

Also, I think the rep hit is being exaggerated a little. It's not like Ling Qi is going to hang out with her old street rat buddies. She's helping people out of the same terrible situation she was in, but not anybody she knew personally back in the day.
