[X] Visit Gu Xiulan, she did not see her at the lesson.

Anyway, as far as argent arts goes. I really dont want to waste what little time we have on the successor arts. They aren't long term viable, and we have a very limited amount of time to maintain access to these libraries.

Okay, that's important info. If two meridians are merged into one, does this allow us to recreate the meridian?

I.e if we have 34 meridians and merge 2, our number becomes 33. Do we then make a roll for the 34th meridian again or move along to the 35th?

We would be upgrading an art to require less meridians, not actually affecting our meridians.

[X] Visit Li Suyin's workshop, if she will allow it. Ling Qi was curious about her project.

I'm worried about Xiulan
Me too. I hope her physical cultivation reaches Green soon to take the edge off her wounds - especially since her Qi is literally leaking out her body.
I'm worried when she reaches Cyan or Violet her Qi might do more than just smoke at her skin, particularly when there'd be a greater gap in her physical vs spiritual cultivation.

Bai Meizhen glanced at her, and gave a shallow nod. "Good Morning," she replied, not unkindly, but with clear disinterest. "Ling Qi, is Cai Renxiang not attending this lecture?"

"She remains busy," Ling Qi replied apologetically. "I will be taking notes for her though," she added, holding up the lacquered case of writing utensils provided for the task."

Meizhen's lips quirked up slightly, and even Li Suyin gave a nervous laugh. "I had wondered when it was that you had decided to be a scholar," Meizhen said dryly.
I was initially worried Ling Qi's air headedness would carry over to her notes and CRX would be stuck deciphering it.

Guess I was wrong :p

Hah, that's useful. Right now, the only thing we've got that we can crunch that way is AM (Which'll free us up to two Head Meridians if we take two actions to clean it up!), but it opens us up for a good Perception Art real soon.

Well, we'll be able to crunch up AC and AS too once they're done. AC will be reduced to 1 Heart 1 Arm, and AS to 1 Leg, 1 Spine, which'll ultimately free us up a net 1 Arm, 1 Spine, 2 Head between them all.

@yrsillar there is some debate over in the discord about how this efficiency thing works with domain weapons' attuned meridian counts. As it stands it looks like it weakens the Domain Weapon, which seems like an oversight instead of a balance tool.

Secondly there's some curiosity in what you mean by "same type of meridians". Do you mean just the same elements? Just the same Arm/Leg/Heart organ type? Or do the meridians have to be perfect matches like Darkness Leg can only be folded into another Darkness Leg?

LanLan is fun, but Li Suyin needs some screentime imo.

It looks to me like the Elements still exist, you're just squeezing multiple Elements through one channel instead of multiple ones, because you've optimized your Qi Channelling enough that you can pull this off.

That's what I was thinking, but as I mentioned in the discord that kind of unsymmetrical relativism is kinda assbackwards.

Thoughts on the new Meridian options.

Right now, the difficulty of opening up new meridians is 40. That is on part with the difficulty of "upgrading" an art with 8 Meridians, which is more than any of our arts have:
  • FZ has 3 meridians
  • AM and TRF have 4 meridians
  • SCS, FVM, and FSS have 5 meridians
  • PoLR has 7 meridians
So once we finish an art, the first upgrade is likely to be easier than opening a new meridian. Even the second upgrade is likely to be comparable to the difficulty of getting a new meridian for us, at least until we start getting into PoLR and similarly complex arts.

In terms of actions, opening a meridian and refining an art to use one meridian cost the same, assuming that you succeed in both cases. Mainly, that leaves four main differences between the options:
  1. Opening a meridian makes all future meridian-opening attempts harder.
  2. Furthermore, opening a meridian locks us into a choice of meridian. If in the future we decide that we would rather have more Head meridians and less Lung meridians, that is just not in the cards.
  3. However, improving an art only "gives" us an extra meridian slot as long as we have the art equipped. If we eventually decide to discard the art, any extra actions spent on it go to waste, whereas if we had instead opened new meridians they would have been kept.
  4. Finally, if an art uses an element that matches our Domain Weapon, refining away those meridians marginally degrades our DW's stats.
Overall, this means that we should try to refine arts if we want to keep them for a while or if we think that its choice of meridians might not be something we want to commit to. Conversely, we should instead open new meridians if we think we will definitely want an extra meridian of that type open in the future or if the art in question uses Darkness meridians which are simultaneously bolstering our Domain Weapon.
