Does the penalty become stronger and/or last longer depending on the form?

Like hypothetically speaking if he became a serpent or bird like form would the Penalty be worse?
That is correct. It would be worse. Some forms might even make further digging near impossible.

Monochromon as an example would make things pretty difficult with its very long horn sticking straight up.

-[X] See if possible, to pay up to a hundred thousand bits, or add a unique/interesting crystal on top. Partly as a lesson, and partly as a little 'goal' to out pay his greed. (Turn Repaying Auger into a Major Goal, Overpay Auger into a Minor Goal?)
[X] Don't Train, Focus on the first spell. (No stat increase, but increases High Programming skill, and puts progress towards learning the first spell.)

If nothing else, a 'little' bit of greed, may lead to a bit of a 'hit' on him. Though the risk may mean increased digging skill, or Auger wanting our 'assistance' in some hoard things, or such...

[] Make a counter offer, say that instead of just paying him back in a few weeks you have a better idea. How about for the next two weeks we agree to work as his aid and trainer. That way he can use our aid to make more profit and get closer to regaining what he lost faster.
-[] Plus we are even willing to put up some collateral with a healing disk if things don't work out. That way he can profit either way.

Would this be OK @drexal15?

It works as a perfectly serviceable write in. Whether it will actually work on the other hand...

Auger at this point doesn't really need or want a trainer and neither mon actually know what an aide is.

The healing disc itself isn't actually money which is his main goal.

To make it more likely to work you'd have to strip out the training bit and replace it with a promise to directly help him dig out more crystals in the weeks after the festival. Then put an emphasis on the fact that the healing disc is worth ten thousand bits. Though as states before, Verge wants to hang on to that in case of an emergency.

Edit: Though that promise to dig with him for weeks might actually be worse for Verge (capitally speaking) since potentially that is a lot of bits. More than the current potential debt by a large amount.

So we're gonna hit Champion soon, and will probably have to leave the village, especially if you consider how much we're already eating. Where do y'all wanna go? We could try to track down Gnaw and see what he's up too, or if Flamemon leaves around the same time we can hangout with him for awhile. Heading straight to city the Gladiator is from would be a option if wanna get to the root of our dreams quickly.

Or we could always push the button and head straight to the hazard coast for adventure!

There is... A plan in place. I've never shorn away from the fact that I'm taking a narrative approach to this quest.

Random ominous sentence!

If going by that prompt, may even add this. But in hindsight, it'd probably be automatic, since Auger would be fatter with bits, and some interesting/precious gems (or crystals.)

-[] As a 'bonus', for each day of digging, he can choose if he'd want to keep any crystals, or sell them. You don't know what else is in his hoard, but you have a feeling he may like a nice rare looking crystal in that as well.

If we word the bargain right. Then on a "bad" day, our debt may still technically be settled (even if we pay slightly less.) And it may not have 'that' bad an impact, if he get's some interesting/shiny crystals that reflect on his hoard pretty well.

While on a good day... Well, he'd certainly appreciate mining business a lot more.

I say stick with Flame. I doubt we'd be able to track Gnaw considering how long he's been gone and the fact he's a really fast champion.

Also there's no confirmation that the Gladiator has anything to do with us. It's a high possibility, but just that. A possibility.

Cannot help but think Devidramon might be a possible champ

Born from a deal between Malkimon and Daemon

Wrath carried over even postdeath

Has high potential

Both Verge and the Baby tend to cling to people they look up too

That is if Verge is the mon killed by Seraphmon

Welp, the quest's already peaked. @drexal15 might as well pack it up and stop now, it's all downhill from here.

I'm still curious the chief is unbelievably old for a Rookie digimon, as in nearly unheard of in normal circumstances. Plus the fact that he hasn't degenerated is also something that I'm interested in.

We have options for paying him back, plus digging around searching for crystals will still allow us to gain fortitude, endurance, strength and digging skill. So it's not an option that entirely lacks the potential for growth.
Also owing money to Auger would still be preferable to letting down Lunamon or garnering money for ourselves.

Well... In terms of base potential Verge isn't actually all that high.

In terms of pure talent compared every other mon in the village actually has/had higher talents than him. Auger, Gnaw, Flamemon, Fu, Lunamon, etc. However admittedly the gap is higher for some than others. For the Armadillomon it's just that his fortitude talent is E whereas Verge's is F+++

A lot of that has to do with the fact that Verge's species itself physically ain't all that impressive besides their drills. Though at the champion level they're not exactly all that powerful.

If Verge were to digivolve now, or even soon then he'd never really have the ability to reach that far in the grand scheme of things considering the options available. Generally the more powerful you are as a rookie, the stronger you can become in the next form and it continues up from there.

However I will leave off with one thing. With the right training, support and line he can potentially reach the heavy hitter level. It just really won't be an easy for fast route.

Edit: Also you've earned a bonus point if you want it.
*Sees that it has more rating than my last story post**Sigh*

Well the thing with Gramps is that he's really too powerful to become a Numemon and his difficulty with digivolving itself only further seals that path off.

===

In the end you accept Auger's offer, telling the Armadillomon that you will indeed pay back the bits borrowed with interest. Once the festival is over you'll have more free time anyways, so you reason that collecting the necessary quantity of crystal afterwords in the fourteen days shouldn't be that much of a problem. The armored rookie doesn't waste any time after hearing your answer, hastily scoffing down his food before running over to his hut for the funds.

Roughly a minute later you're sixty-two hundred bits richer and Auger is quite literally drooling over the thought of how much you'll be paying him back in response. You try to ignore it and just get back to sating the screaming void that is your stomach.

Just as lunch itself ends, you notice something odd happening between blinks. Fu, who was previously sitting just across from you, seems to have vanished from sight. Afraid that something terrible might have happened, you begin to panic, but you are reassured as the Lalamon herself shouts at you from an unexpected place.

"Fufufu! Look at me everyone!" Her voice calls out seemingly from nowhere. You whirl about looking for the small rookie, as do the other mon eating there, but none of you manage to spot the illusive plant digimon. Finally there's an audible sigh, and Fu speaks up again "Up here dummies!" Sparks, Auger and yourself look up in unison and are all surprised to see Fu literally flying above you, her head-stem rapidly whirling around to keep her aloft.

"Woah."

"That's Awesome big sis Fu!"

"C-cool. You can.. fly now!"

"Yepyep I can!" She trills, easily moving to hover above you. "Thanks to the training you and Auger helped with my glorious can now soar above everyone else! As is proper! Fufufu!"

"Good job, congrats." Flamemon says trying to get in on the praise, but he really doesn't actually seem all that into it. His voice, usually bursting with jubilant energy, is a dull, almost depressing tone. Instead of rising up to give a thumbs up, he just kind of sits near the cauldron with a small frown on his face while eating with his one good arm. Sparks tries the pick up the slack and it actually works so far as Auger and Fu are concerned, and the three of them rush off to go test her new ability.

But seeing your best friend like this puts a dampener in your mood. After you're finished eating, you awkwardly spend several minutes trying to find some way to cheer him up but fail miserably. Even calling him a hero isn't enough to raise him out of his funk. The fire-type rookie just gives an entirely fake smile, then goes back to picking at his meal.

Eventually you give up and chose to visit Sorcerymon again, as you know that you're very close to actually being able to use that first spell. After all, while Gramps may have ordered Sorcerymon to not heal Flamemons arm, he hadn't given you the same limitation.

In the hours that follow under the white champion's tutelage you feels like you're on the very cusp of getting it. During the practice you actually manage to start summoning up fragments of healing light a few times, though they sadly always fade out before as you mess something up. By the afternoon's near end you nearly manage say the spell in its entirely.Sorcerymon confirms that you're almost certainly just one more study session away from being able to use it. He once again stresses how impressed he is with your progress and dedication and even goes so far to invite you to a last bout of practice tonight so you can finally get it down.

With the decision made, you wave goodbye and head off to do some nice relaxing digging. However, before you can make it more than halfway across the village a familiar voice barks out an order.

"Verge! To the gate, now!" Gramps shouts. "Flamemon! You too!"

Naturally you rush over at the sound of his voice, scrambling at top speed to follow his command. Flamemon is a bit less responsive, taking a few seconds to leisurely get up from his position leaning against the wall before lightly jogging over. That's still fast enough to easily overcome your own sprinting form.

"Yes Gramps?" The humanoid digimon replies in what's almost a sigh.

"You-you wanted to speak to us?"

"I did, and I still do." The old Elecmon grumbles, turning towards the outside world. "Now come, I have to something to show you." Flamemon shrugs at this but doesn't protest, qucikly falling in step behind him.

"Hey guys, can I come too!?"

"Not now. When you're older." Gramps absentmindedly replies, refusing Sparks' eager plea without so much as looking back.

"Ten Darn it! Well uh. Hrm, have a good trip guys!" Sparks says with a happy wave of his left hand.

Your party of three exits the village and, following the scarred rookies lead, immediately turn southwest, heading towards the mountainous area, though not the area littered with mine shafts. Unlike in the previous outing, your procession doesn't actually travel for that long. Even at the slow pace Gramps sets it only takes an hour to reach the destination, another walled off area perhaps a tenth the size of the village itself. The red digimon silently leads you around the small barricade, not bothering to answer Flamemon's question about what this place is supposed to be.

Several seconds pass as he leads you down along the shorter wall and down the hill. Finally, the entrance appears at the bottom, where the incline drops off. Upon getting past the small hole in the fence, your eyes widen in surprised horror.

Rows upon rows of crossed pieces of wood line the hill, dozens of the markers each rooted in a tiny mound of dirt.

Something soft about it tickles at your mind, screaming that there's something wrong with what you're seeing.

"Gramps..." Flamemon softly mumbles. "Is this..."

"It is." he replies. "These..." The scarred mon's voice cracks for the first time you've heard in your entire life. A heavy sadness is laced in his voice. "This represents all the digimon I've lost. Those that never made it to champion under my care."

Then that means each of those is a...

You nearly start retching at the thought, but then a warm hand places itself on your shoulder. Looking back, you spot Flamemon once again sporting a reassuring smile. So far as you can tell, this one is genuine.

After a few moments of carefully considered thought, Flamemon speaks up.

"Why would you bring us here? Why show us this?"

"I want you both to understand why I've done what I have." Gramps tiredly mutters, moving forward to touch the closest grave marker with his paw. "Everything. All of it, was all to keep you safe." The Elecmon shakes his head. "So many have been lost and I... I never wanted that to happen again." He gestures over towards the closest row of crosses. "Floramon, Betamon, Veemon..." He trails off looking at the last marker before suddenly growling.

Veemon? I-I think I've heard that before.

"The world is a dangerous place. Filled with those who would prey on the weak. Who do prey on mon who can't defend themselves" he pivots around and nearly makes you flinch back as his emotion-filled eyes lock onto Flamemon and yourself. "To protect what you love you have to make difficult choices. Even ones you hate, may The Ten forgive me." Still not taking his eyes off the others, Gramps reaches a paw into his bag and pulls out a small yellow bandanna, smiling bitterly. "I bought this for the last Hero who hatched in the village. Encouraged his delusions of justice and victory over evil." His grip on the article tightens, shaking in anger. "Then-" His voice cracks again. "-then I failed and Veemon led the others to their doom!"

What Gnaw was talking about. Gramps, you...

He takes a second to calm himself before continuing, causing a heavy and uncomfortable silence to fall upon everyone gathered there.

"Flamemon, I see that same spirit in you." The old Elecmon takes a step forward offering the piece of cloth to your best friend. "Take this. Veemon would have wanted you to have it." Flamemon gingerly reach out to grab the bandanna with his good arm, but Gramps doesn't let it go yet. "Let this be a reminder, Flamemon. I can't stop you from trying to be a hero, but please. Don't let your guard down. Could have gotten deleted in that last fight." With that he lets the yellow piece of clothing go.

Flamemon looks like he wants to answer the older digimon's words with something mindlessly comforting and boisterous, but manages to refrain from doing so. Instead he simply nods.

"Gramps... Thank you. I will, I promise. When I go..." He trails off.

The red digimon smiles and nods.

"When that happens, you'll be missed." The village caretaker lets out an uncharacteristic sniffle. "I may have been strict with you, but it's only because I care. I..." The rookie struggles for a way to finish the sentence, but finally just shakes his head. He looks over towards Flamemon's dangling arm and moves to say something else, but the taller rookie speaks first.

"I know." Your best friend answers, "And don't worry about my arm, old-timer. It'll heal soon."

"Hrmph. Old timer?" Gramps grumbles in a somewhat humored way "Been hanging around Sorcerymon too much." The red digimon sighs before slumping down. "You can go. I have to speak with Verge."

Speak with me?! W-what would he need to talk about?!

Flamemon flashes him a grin, then leaps backwards, easily clearing the wall with a single bound before then vanishing from sight.

The scarred Elecmon takes a full minute to just stand there and stare at you before even attempting to speak.

"Wasn't always a caretaker Verge." The mon starts, "A long time ago, before I built this village, I fought for a cause." The Elecmon suddenly shivers as if remembering something horrifying. "I saw the horrors of war, I deleted others, many others to save myself." He turns a discerning eye back towards you. "The host, the gloaming, all of it is just destruction. I can't convince Flamemon to leave his path but... Verge, you don't want to follow him. Spirits below, that only leads to pain."

Not follow Flamemon? No! I-I have to! He's... I promised to help make him a hero! I swore an oath!

You grit your teeth at the sudden flash of anger, and have to keep yourself from yelling at the old digimon about your promise. For his part Gramps just shakes his head.

"That anger... Seen the like before" he says moments before shivering again. "All he did was cause destruction. You should never embrace it, Verge. Always keep it far away." The Elecmon advises

"I've lived a long time. Longer than any other rookie I've met. Longer than most champions." The scarred mon murmurs "I can feel it. I'm weaker, slower. Don't know how much time I have left. Maybe months... maybe less. When I'm gone... I want there to be a mon like you ready to take over."

"L-like me? B-but Gramps, I'm a coward. Wouldn't you want someone like..." You think for a moment. "Gnaw?"

"No." the red mon disagrees. "Hrmph, he'd never be happy staying here even if he could control himself. But you, you could do it. You'd never try to delete another member of the village." Gramps gives a final shrug. "You get scared a lot, but I've seen you grow. You won't be a coward forever."

You don't know what to say to that.

"Mrm, Come on." Gramps says, his voice still melancholic. "We're going back."

I am glad we focused on this spell, even if we may need to make up the training latter.

Getting an early grip on a simple spell like this is going to have a lot of utility, moral from healing, and a way to make money if we have to travel. I am sure it would be limited by something, but I am glad we got this.
