-[X] Turn back to the mural and calmly continue your discussion.
-[X] "It is sad to know that only the trappings of religion could make men listen to wise counsel."
-[X] "May I call you Messenger then?"
-[X] "Your goals are noble indeed and gladly would I make common cause with you, though my dealings with the divine make it difficult to support the means you took."
-[X] "What have you heard about Sorcerers Deep and its inhabitants?" Set the record straight if necessary.
-[X] "This world has languished far too long under the yoke of petty cruelty and avarice, yet I have seen even the basest wretch reach the greatest heights if given nothing more then purpose and guidance."
-[X] "We share a goal there [INSERT PREFFERED NAME]. I seek the knowledge of old, to mend the scars left by the Freeholds folly. I have not come to this city to pillage it for my ends and abandon it when it's served it's purpose. I think we can aid each other greatly."
-[X] If he is unsure, offer him to visit SD to see for himself what we want to create.
-[X] "On matters closer at hand..."
--[X] Temple guard of Trios will be reduced to 120, just like that of Burny. You are always in need of men of skill and good character, so you will gladly recruit any who wish into the Legion, Lawmen or Administration if they have the aptitude. This city needs order and law in the coming transition.
--[X] You've contemplated what to do with the statue he once gifted Tyroshs Archon. If he wants, it can be returned to his temple, otherwise you would sell it off whole or in parts to finance the coming reconstruction of the slums and the transition to a non-slavery society.
    [X] Maelor Level Up
    -[X] Class: +1 Eldritch Theurge
--[X] NOTE: @DragonParadox Maelor's Eldritch Blast should currently be at 5d6, not 4d6. Also, can we finally learn what that ??? is on Maelor's character sheet?
    -[X] Skills (4 points): +4 Concentration
-[X] Lesser Invocation: Flee the Scene
    -[X] Spells:
    --[X] 1st Level: Mage Armor
    --[X] 2nd Level: Invisibility
    --[X] 3rd Level: Fireball

Part MMIII: Of Tangled Lies and Unwelcome Truths
Of Tangled Lies and Unwelcome Truths

Twenty-Seventh Day of the Second Month 293 AC

As the shock ebbs you feel elated to have discovered such a fount of reason and lore as opposed to another spirit from beyond the bounds of the world to be slain at great risk at worst or placated at best, adding another step in the complex dance you must tread... not that you anticipate it will be easy to deal with this wax man set upon a message by a long dead maegi, but at the very least your purposes align roughly. "It is sad to know that only the trappings of religion could make men listen to wise counsel," you begin to fill the silence and give yourself the time to think.

"Sad..." the false man trails off. "That seems too small a word. It drove my maker to despair to find that every ragged would-be 'prophet' could gather a following to heed their ramblings while the greater truths of the world slowly rotted in the minds of the aged and dying and fell to dust upon forgotten shelves."

Though the words are stilted and passionless they still paint a grim picture in your mind's eye of the world left in grey ash in the wake of the Doom. What would you have done in the place of those ancient sorcerers? Drank deep from the cup of unlife, that one might stride forward upon even the darkest paths? Dream the ages away as Malarys and his companions in fallen Essaria? Or sent a message forth into the future to carry what you could of lore and legacy? "May I call you Messenger, then?" you ask quietly.

"As it pleases thee," the false man replies, this time in the High Tongue of the Freehold. There might be an edge of relief to his words, perhaps at speaking 'a civilized tongue' at last, to judge from Malarys' habits. "It is certainly better than some of the names I have been given by the high priests of Trios in their zeal..."

"Then perhaps it is time to divest yourself of veils and masks," you speak with utmost care, seeking to thread most intricate needle. "Though I find your goals noble and would gladly make common cause with you, my dealings with the divine make it difficult to support the means your maker choose."

"What manner of dealings?" Once more it is impossible to read anything into the tone, if there is even anything there to read.

For near half an hour you speak of the realm your have built and the allies you have gathered to your cause, not only of the gods and spirits but the artifice and forging, the study of the arcane. Ultimately you speak of your hopes for a world no longer prey to ravenous horrors that would devour or enslave it, and setting right the folly that was the Freehold's undoing.

The newly-named Messenger listens quietly, accepting the statue of Trios back into his keeping though you suspect for the worth of gold and gems, and even the reduction in the number of temple guards to one-hundred-and-twenty, though with the intent of sending some of the most loyal and competent to other cities to aid in the growth of the cult there.

On the matter of most import, however, it says not unreasonably, "Much as I might wish it I cannot step forth before the altar on the Day of Remembrance and proclaim the truth for all to hear. There would be chaos and fear that turns to hot rage and blind zeal. It will take time, years, perhaps decades before the trappings of religion can be shed from that which they had been meant to protect. From the manner you took this city it seems to me that you have no desire for the gutters to run red with the blood of the foolish and misguided."

What do you do?

[] Offer to present him to Yss to make his case, after all this false worship is only a tool and unpleasant to his eye at that, gone in an instant by the measure of the deathless gods

[] Simply keep the matter hidden, Yss has not shown himself particularly interested in the nature of other gods in his brief moments of wakefulness

[] Write in

OOC: Your rolls were very good this time around, not that there was much chance of failure given how supportive you were.

Yss would only take umbrage if we ever bothered to support and interact with Trios' faith in public, but it would full-stop cut us off from making productive use of a relationship with Trios and Messenger if we just let it lie, which seems like a waste.

@Azel As far as I can tell it is worth pursuing an open relationship, but it would probably involve a really carefully worded and well-rolled diplomacy check against Yss to convince him we're not trying to feed worship into a yawning pit. One way I can think of doing that is to explicitly say we don't intend on spreading worship, sponsoring new temples, or encouraging regression into Faith as opposed to true enlightenment.

It's unfortunate that it is hard to lay out doctrine to a person without some surety that a higher power will be waiting to catch them if they (perhaps inevitably) fall down and can't "get up" as it were on their own, because it does hamstring our effort to just spread his (perhaps slightly modified) ideology as far as we possibly can.

Yss has done well by us, and deserves our honesty, if only to prevent misunderstandings and future drama.

@Goldfish It could also go really wrong, since Gods do not think like mortals do. In Yss' defense he only has a few tenets, but those few seem tightly bound like coils to the core of his being.

Probably not a guarantee of failure though, the Old Gods really fucking hate Undead, yet are investing a huge amount of power into someone to champion their cause despite the fact that he broke most of their tenets and in truth cares very, very little for them beyond acknowledgement that they share the same ultimate foe and so make common cause from it.

Yss would probably be more likely to suggest that we do away with Trios entirely and instead just spread the truth as we wish it, though it defeats the purpose of slowly morphing a large number of people into more secular adherents rather than active worship.

I honestly will lose a great measure of respect for Yss if he doesn't act sensible to this.
We did a lot for him and haven't ever did wrong to him.
I'm fairly sure even beings so bound by their nature as gods can go against their likes/dislikes.

And we killed that other Snake monster that Yss didn't like!
Did we feed it to him?

We should also remind Yss that we're going to Sororythos for him soon.

Yss is useful and generous (free Commune!), so let's keep it that way.

My best guess is even in the worst scenario Yss does take into account what we've done for him by just warning us not to actually tread over the line and encourage Trios worship in any way.

Which would be fair, I think @DragonParadox once said something along the lines of "a dragon in hand is worth two Volantene mages in the bush". Sometimes options we are given are mutually exclusive, though not to the point of outright hostility. We can't expect Dornishmen to be happy if we didn't even try to punish or censure the Lannisters (ignoring the personal stakes Targaryens themselves have here) even though there are probably a few to a handful of them that are actually decent and useful folk when all is said and done. And I doubt if we were truly punishing of the Lannisters (as we probably will be) they'll have any great love for us, however deserving they would be of such punishment.

I just accidentally taught my kitten to fetch. It's not really relevant to the thread or anything, but it's such an amazing achievement that I thought I should share.

As long as we're not supporting it, and can explain the benefits of knowledge and wisdom and, if we have any luck, arcane lore, we should be good. I don't expect Yss to make a large deal of it, but better to discuss it openly.
