I meant more, did you already have this letter in your writer's notes before Abelheim suddenly died to bad rolls?

What is the point of this question? Is it a deliberate attempt to sabotage everyone's suspension of disbelief?

Also, what ended up happening with the Asarnil memoirs? Did they sell? If yes, where did the proceeds go?

The Elf Books will come up at the end of this turn.

I'm a little overwhelmed by the wave of plans, so I'm going to have a nap and then compile a bunch more miscellanea like the Proto-FAQ before trying to find something to vote for.

Until then, I have a general suggestion:
Ask yourself - would Abelhelm approve of your plan?
I still maintain Plan Grand Larcenous Embezzlement could Easily Get Mathilde Declared Rogue.

Edit: Maybe Plan Grand Theft Sylvania?

Nice, looks like Van Hal just gave us a key we need to crack the conspiracy open.

Doing that should be a high priority methinks. Whatever else we try to do.

I'm sorry. I didn't even think of that aspect. In my mind I was doing the opposite, because I genuinely thought it was a possibility. But I seem to be asking annoying and ill thought out questions non-stop today. So I'll stop asking you anything at least until I had a good night's sleep. Please next time just ignore questions I ask you if you think any answer to them would actually be to the detriment of this quest.

I Better be productive instead:

[X] Plan: Second Things Second
-[X] Special Branch: Pull some financial trickery to get the information network classified as part of the Watch, so that their costs are covered by the Stirlandian treasury.
-[X] Set up saltpeter production facilities using headhunted experts from Nuln. (-2 Budget Points)
-[X] As above, but insist on being a part of whatever happens.
--[X] Also ask our master if there's any chance he could put his weight behind Anton while we're there. He's a good candidate with love for Stirland.
--[X] Ranald's Blessing
-[X] Spend time with Anton, possibly talking about how good a candidate he would be - local support, known to external powers, and a few powerful friends supporting him, and so forth.
--[X] Make sure both of your loyalties still ultimately lie with House Van Hal.
-[X] Stirland Watch: Work alongside Jack to administer the Watch. Choose another Organizational Action for the Watch.
--[X] Grungni, the principal Dwarf Ancestor God, actually has some following among the Stirlandian populace - and he is their Lawgiver to boot. Bring in a few priests to make it happen. (-1 Dwarf Favour)
-[X] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned.
--[X] Martial
-[X] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned.
--[X] Diplomacy
-[X] Free actions:
--[X] Buy out half of Markus' shares in the EIC. (does not take an action; increases your debt to Stirland)
--[X] Free Time: Now well-established in Wurtbad, you can spend some time in your scant off hours getting to know someone better. Wilhelmina. (does not take an action)

"Cunning" Plan: Encourage Anton to throw his head in the ring if Van Hal's heir can't make it in time. Also try to convince him that no matter what, Van Hal's heir has precedent, even if someone sends a letter saying otherwise in their stead, and that even if the Elector Meet tramples over the true heir's rights the correct thing to do would be seeing this position as an extended regency in that case. As we meet our Master Magister for Abelheim's letter, also ask him if he could use his many connections to help support Anton any way he thinks best.
Also, if all we get is a letter, I would be interested in making sure Abelheim's children actually penned the letter, and not some meddling 'protector'. But that would be a question for next turn's vote.

@Everyone, if you want to know why I did or didn't choose specific actions or if I you consider me one improvement away from being vote-worthy, please just ask me to clarify.

Article:
[X] [Plan] Forming a group
-[X] Trade Delegation: Convince Wilhelmina to partner your network with the EIC based on the value of market information. Especially likely to work since Wilhelmina will soon be losing her position of power in Stirland's government.
-[X] Verena is the Goddess of Justice. Enshrine her as the patron goddess of the Stirland Watch.
-[X] As above, but insist on being a part of whatever happens.
-[X] Buy out half of Markus' shares in the EIC. (does not take an action; increases your debt to Stirland)
-[X] Though the Haunted Hills have always technically belonged to the Elector Count, they've suddenly skyrocketed in value. If you could backdate some purchases from the Elector Count, you could make a killing reselling them, and still retain your own slice of prime grazelands.
--[X] Ranalds Blessing
-[X] Financial Jargon: Everything with the EIC flew right over your head last time. Try again. Succeeding here will mean that you can take a more active hand in the company, adding it to the organizational actions; failing or not attempting means Mathilde will remain a silent partner.
-[X] Spend time with Anton, possibly talking about how good a candidate he would be - local support, known to external powers, and a few powerful friends supporting him, and so forth.
-[X] Spend time with Wilhelmina. As emptied as the treasury of Stirland was by the campaign, the EIC may be the wealthiest institution in the province.
-[X] Free Time: Now well-established in Wurtbad, you can spend some time in your scant off hours getting to know someone better. Pick one character. (does not take an action)
--[x] Regimand Speiseschrank

Vote for my plan! Total 2+1(free) actions are spent talking with powerful allies to ensure Mathilde's position is stable as well as keeping friends close despite death of Abelhelm. It's also good for Mathilde to remain grounded as she works out her grief.
  • 5 actions, no overwork
  • Spends no dawi rep
  • Used creative accounting on new land only, with blessing
  • No research or training
  • Talk to Anton, Wilhelmina, and Regimand (Master).

[X] Plan Mistress of Shadows
-[X] Trade Delegation: Convince Wilhelmina to partner your network with the EIC based on the value of market information. Especially likely to work since Wilhelmina will soon be losing her position of power in Stirland's government.

-[X] Attend the Elector's Meet yourself, to take any opportunity that arises to manipulate events in your favour.
-[X] Spend time with Gustav, securing his subordination to you.
-[X] Financial Jargon: Everything with the EIC flew right over your head last time. Try again. Succeeding here will mean that you can take a more active hand in the company, adding it to the organizational actions; failing or not attempting means Mathilde will remain a silent partner.
-[X] Stirland Watch: Work alongside Jack to administer the Watch. Choose another Organizational Action for the Watch.

What? I have it, under "As above". I even use blessing on it (it's either it or Elector's Meet, I think)
True. That is quite easy to overlook.

On your plan, my main concern is this:

-[] Your experience with the so-called Fog of War has given you a lot of ideas for new applications of Ulgu.

Its useful, yes, but maybe not time-critical. Boney specifically called out Learning how the EIC functions as an option that would lead to a lot of potential financial options. Though I am conflicted about what taking those options might mean! So it may be better to stay ignorant after all.

Well, that Ulgu research is there because there wasn't fifth important time-critical option, so I'm flexible on this. Financial jargon will open some EIC options and maybe will have some synergies with EIC-spy network partnership if we will choose that route, but it also doesn't look time critical and/or very important. Thus I chose Ulgu research because I'm more interested in reading about magic than about finances.

Haven't really taken the time to read the non-BoneyM parts of the thread today, just wanna throw up my plan:

[X] Plan Mo Money Mo Magic
-[X] Open a dialogue with Zhufbar, offering an information exchange.
-[X] Set up saltpeter production facilities and call in favours to bring a dwarvern expert in. (-1 Budget Point, -2 Dwarf Favours) (NEW)

If this only costs -2 Favours, not -5? I'm in.

-[X] Buy out half of Markus' shares in the EIC. (does not take an action; increases your debt to Stirland)
-[X] Visit the Amethyst Wizards in Altdorf and ask what the hell they were playing at.

... Politely. I just feel like if we don't try this, we'll never do it. Ill-advised? Possibly. Nonetheless.

-[X] Though the Haunted Hills have always technically belonged to the Elector Count, they've suddenly skyrocketed in value. If you could backdate some purchases from the Elector Count, you could make a killing reselling them, and still retain your own slice of prime grazelands.
--[X] Ranald's blessing

Being able to parcel out land to people who will be hella grateful to get this primo real estate? That seems more valuable than just wiping out our debt. But also we don't want to be CAUGHT at that, so...

-[X] Attend the Elector's Meet yourself, to take any opportunity that arises to manipulate events in your favour.

Be the spectre at the feast. If they can't even take our thousand-yard stare, then are they really ready for Stirland? No. No they would not be.

-[X] Enchantment: You're naturally talented at enchantment; so far, this just amounts to being able to make your desk meow for about an hour. See if you can improve on that, or at least figure out a way to make that useful.

There but for the grace of enchanted chainmail goes Van Hal.

-[X] Your experience with the so-called Fog of War has given you a lot of ideas for new applications of Ulgu. (NEW)
-[X] Financial Jargon: Everything with the EIC flew right over your head last time. Try again. Succeeding here will mean that you can take a more active hand in the company, adding it to the organizational actions; failing or not attempting means Mathilde will remain a silent partner.

The menu item called for the saltpeter to gunpowder factory. This is the waste to saltpeter part of the process, which is simpler.

-[X] Though the Haunted Hills have always technically belonged to the Elector Count, they've suddenly skyrocketed in value. If you could backdate some purchases from the Elector Count, you could make a killing reselling them, and still retain your own slice of prime grazelands.
-[X] Practice, Practice, Practice: Having been thrown into the deep end of imperial politics, it would probably be a good idea to brush up on your skills and internalize the lessons you've learned (choose which trait; can be taken multiple times; will be more effective if you've used the trait a lot lately).
    -[X] Martial
-[X] Your experience with the so-called Fog of War has given you a lot of ideas for new applications of Ulgu. (NEW)
-[X] Free Time: Now well-established in Wurtbad, you can spend some time in your scant off hours getting to know someone better. Pick one character. (does not take an action)
    --[X] Kasmir
[X] Plan Mo Money Mo Magic
-[X] Open a dialogue with Zhufbar, offering an information exchange.
-[X] Set up saltpeter production facilities and call in favours to bring a dwarvern expert in. (-1 Budget Point, -2 Dwarf Favours) (NEW)
-[X] Buy out half of Markus' shares in the EIC. (does not take an action; increases your debt to Stirland)
-[X] Visit the Amethyst Wizards in Altdorf and ask what the hell they were playing at.

-[X] Attend the Elector's Meet yourself, to take any opportunity that arises to manipulate events in your favour.
-[X] Enchantment: You're naturally talented at enchantment; so far, this just amounts to being able to make your desk meow for about an hour. See if you can improve on that, or at least figure out a way to make that useful.
-[X] Free Time: Now well-established in Wurtbad, you can spend some time in your scant off hours getting to know someone better. Pick one character. (does not take an action)

Being able to parcel out land to people who will be hella grateful to get this primo real estate? That seems more valuable than just wiping out our debt. But also we don't want to be CAUGHT at that, so...
I dunno how the 'steal from Stirland' votes think we'll keep this from the Grey College, let alone justify it when they find out.

We're still not a Magister- there will have to be some sort of examination of our conduct before promotion, which I'd assume includes whether we're holding strictly to our vow of poverty, pragmatically bending it a little to do our job, or laughing while driving a cart full of Stirlands gold through the letter of the law. @BoneyM Am I right in assuming the promotion to Magister examines more than just our magical ability, it includes assessment of our conduct on our Journeyman Wanderings? To establish confidence in our ability to represent the Grey College appropriately and follow its laws and practices? If so, do we know if it's purely self-certification, or (as I'd expect) is there a bit of digging done by the College of Snooping?

FWIW I'm not sure where super-greedy Mathilde comes from, either. (Well, I know where it comes from OOC). Sure, we embezzled a little, but we we young, from a dirt-poor peasant background, and thought that it was expected, then we stopped and were willing to pay it back rather than bankrupt our budget. This land fraud is on a completely different scale and sets a very bad precedent.

Would Abelhelm approve?

Verena's followers have a hard-on against Ranaldites in the lore just like the Lady of the Like, i think if our Verenan watchmen finds out that we are a Ranaldite, a coup nay just be the least of our problems...
