[X] Explain that he might have magic of some sort and try to discover its nature
-[X] Ask him to allow us a completly harmless and non-invasive test
-[X] Summon a Janni, let it go Etheral and ask him to try hitting it. We and Lya watch with Greater Arcane Sight and True Sight respectivly

The watch seriously needs everything they can get, and Belen sounds like he could be a huge asset. He's popular and a stark, He's probably the best possible person we could pick to introduce the rest of the watch to magic.

Hmm, witzies and archivists are based on understanding and knowledge, he's had what... two, 2 1/2 years to have smart people to study notes?

I think he has a bunch of wizards, and some of them can cast fourth level spells. It's hard, but worth it, getting mages. And who made those spellbooks for him if not wizards?

He had to start from scratch. There might be some mages by now, and he could have done like the Sealord who purchased spells for Alyssane, buying or having stolen every bit of arcane lore that could be found. It would be ridiculous for him to have very many, and even fewer should be PCs, with the ability to exceed 5th level.

More likely, he has a few mages of middling power who he was planning to use to instruct another cadre of new mages. That's likely what the spellbooks were for.

Or they could have been collections of spells he was planning to use as bribes to entice mages into his service. After all, he could have slave scribes copy the books, generating highly valuable items with very little actual investment.

[X] Let the matter lie until the Black brothers have gotten more used to have sorcery to call on

Too much weird shit in the universe and not enough evidence for us to make a useful comment. Nor is there a pressing need or interest of ours involved to justify an investigation.

It would be funny if all Brothers of the Nightwatch, or at least those who took the oath and really meant it, have the potential to become Warlocks.

Warlocks of the Wall, unconsciously drawing strength from the Wall itself, and the ancient, stupendous power bound up not only in it, but the Epic wards which extend across much of the North.

Kind of annoyed with this. You guys wanted to interact with him but don't want to follow through? Benjen having magic is important. The man risks his life on a regular basis against things that would make most men piss their pants. He should know what he's capable of, and we can take, what, a mere hour of our time to help him figure it out?

The important thing is that we give Benjen a basic understanding of his abilities and then he can build on that on his own.

Yeah let's help him. It's a small thing for us to do for him but is big for him and the Night's Watch.

Besides if he talks to Ned he'll hear about us which is good. Want to have Ned hear good things.

I abstain, mostly because I'm wary of poking the wrong button. Though with Benjen, he's doubtlessly more 'used' to magic than the average person, knowing that there's some screwy shit out there that you can't really hide your eyes from.

So he might be more receptive in general to talking about it.

The abstaining choice in this case would have been to not talk to Benjen at all.

But we're here in front of him and he isn't hostile to us unlike his lovely sister, so ignoring the important potential magic he has just makes no sense, especially when it won't be that time-consuming and will greatly boost Benjen's survival chances.

Never wanted to talk to him in the first place :p

@Artemis1992 appealing to the wrong person here but we are probably better served summoning a non-humanoid.

Short lived people created at our whim is a deep and twisty tangent we really CBF with at the moment.

I'd say we can just tell them what a summon is: "an instance of the collective unconscious of [summoned creature] temporally given shape in our world"

And when they state in incomprehension, shrug. :)

I think summoning an allip is a generally unwise action cuz death magics have an ick factor that muggles can notice, no good reason to make stuff harder imo.

Edit: non-humanoid would be better, but I think that calling a mini genie into being might be grand

Well... the question of "Why would you ask me to hit a person you called into being" answered with a sheepish "they're not a real person, you know..." might have unexpected funny factor... for me.
