The Jewish tradition is typically that you're not supposed to say god's name. The word 'adonai' pretty much is a junk word used to refer to god. The word in Hebrew script is actually a combination of two silent letters, it's literally unpronouncable.
Historically, it was said the only recorded version of gods true name was in the Great Temple of Jerusalem, where the head rabbi said it one during the New Years prayers to udder in a new year. As that temple was destroyed (twice). The name is lost, and the ceremony where it was spoken is defunct because it could only be performed at that particular (now destroyed) temple.
