Found a few more. This is skipping things like "my ring hand/finger" and "my ring-generated XXX" which Paul is rather fond of using. Sorry for accidentally posting this in Story Only. Forgot that I needed to hit back more than once to get through multiple pages.

Are all of those thoughts or is he saying it?

The compulsion COULD be about openly stating ownership of the ring to others. Paul can't say his name because he isn't in the book of destiny (or so goes the hypothesis), the compulsion of the ring is orders of magnitude less powerful.

She turns away and starts walking towards a piece of machinery whose function I.. have.. no idea how to discern. "No. You can keep it. It's yours."

Propriety unlocked.

My ring flickers for a moment, then stills. Um. Okay?
I wonder if this will result in any actual changes. Maybe creating rings is actually easier than first thought, but locked down? It wouldn't be that hard to make the ring lie about how long and difficult it is to make new ones.
He already has a power ring so losing one really isn't that big a deal.
Sending a data packet isn't a big deal either. She was testing whether he could share things at all, and giving up a ring is more significant than sending data.
Why is it that every time I hear another story about Guardians doing something it's the most idiotic nonsense ever?
Utter fucking idiots, every time. Holy shit.
1. Unrepresentative samples. You don't generally hear about all the good things they do.

2. Comic writers are idiots and only have the vaguest ideas of how to write characters meant to be smart.
Not precisely sure, since the search box isn't cooperating, but I think it's that OL never refers to the Ring as HIS. I think he usually refers to it as 'the Ring' or 'this Ring'.

Huh. There's a certain kind of sense to it. It's in the title after all. Although with the errors it would be really hard to confirm. I remember Zoat mentioning that there are some clues in Fool's Canon, but in the second Raul segment he thinks "my ring", so if I were to really try to test it, it would fail.

I wonder what the reasoning behind the two compulsions is. Both seem to have a theme of the ring wielder not having ownership of themselves. But for what purpose? And can the SI say his name now, or did the Controller solely lift the compulsion about referring to the ring as his?

He does, but then he isn't using his original ring.

I'll get to the rest of the corrections in half an hour or so.

Thank you, corrected.
Ha! Right there! He said MY RING. I had to search...not "My ring scans." not "My ring HUD." just plain old "My ring." as in the ring that is MINE.

I'm all happy with myself now. Even if it doesn't count for some reason.
Google! You've failed me for the last time!

I knew that when I got here I'd have missed a few. I did a search on the Story Only thread when I wrote it and caught a few. Guess I somehow missed a few more.
Unfortunately, if it is about never referring to the ring as his, then a) even one slip up is enough to make it something you can't reasonably feel clever about people not guessing, and b) "propriety" is not the right word to use to link to that. While obviously, ownership is an important concept to the orange light, I'm also not sure what the point of that compulsion would be. The ring already operates as if it were specifically attuned to him.
Can you imagine how that would drive Larfleeze to distraction, having something but knowing that you don't own it?

1,2, 4, 5, 6, 7: Thank you, corrected.
3: This is correct as he isn't wearing the ring.

Didn't even notice.
Umm @Mr Zoat over here:
Either this is a typo or OL time-traveled :):):D:D
Thank you, various times changed.

Given that the compulsion includes a lack of noticing it (apparently), I don't know that Larfleeze would have realized. The significance of it is lost because it never seems to be significant. And I somehow doubt it'd even WORK if the bearer didn't internally consider it HIS. Even if he couldn't say "my ring" while wearing it.

I also still think "propriety" is the wrong word. "Ownership" is probably better. "Ownership unlocked" or "New proprietor accepted" or something. It's perhaps too obvious, but obfuscation through incorrect verbiage is not good writing.

The other issue is that Mr. Grayson noticing it would be weird, since Paul has apparently revered to it as "my ring" when not wearing it in the past, given that the third instance Zig brought up is correct. So Richard could and - if he'd notice the shift now - would notice him switching from "my ring" to "this ring" in the past, and if he noticed the presence/absence of it correlating, there's no reason he wouldn't have brought it up in the past.

I'd love to try to help hash out a way to make this work better via edits, but without understanding the impact this is supposed to have, I just don't feel the "wham" that the realization seems meant to impart, and don't even really see how it can have strong implications or consequences at this stage. Maybe that will become clear later?

Frankly, Paul's ability to handle fiat money - which is demonstrated without even discussing why it's changed (though I could guess) - seems more portentous and impactful a shift than this.

Wait? Paul was/is operating under a ring-based compulsion? So, there's at least one area where ring-tech trumps Earth magic. And, hilariously enough, it's scry warding and dodging. Because Paul and the rest of the team have been checked for mental and magical compulsions (the latter of which was done by John Constantine) when they were hunting for the mole.

Obviously I had to have the ring and my Spell Eater off.
I don't know if it's just because I saw the previous version, but this doesn't scan quite right. Like, it makes the compulsion seem almost obvious. "the ring and spell eater" reads better as a sentence since switching to using "my" halfway through the sentence isn't something people would do even if refering to something they know isn't theirs as the first item.

He does, but then he isn't using his original ring.

By Raul I'm assuming Empiricist meant Red Lantern in the Teen Titans cartoon universe?

Then this statement means that every version of the SI has the same compulsion to not think of the rings they receive as theirs.

Did multiple Malthusians and their equivalents across multiple universes run the same experiment but with different lights?

I know that is is a bit off topic from what we are talking about right now but, I'm currently going for a reread and I just noticed how that the Ophidian speaks a lot like Paul/OL. I noticed when OL censored himself from saying "oh S***"., down to "oh poop". This made me remember that the Ophidian said that people from Apokolips "taste like poop", I remember that I found that odd (and hilarious) when I first read the story. Looking at it now I see that the two of them changed after the joining a lot more than I first thought.

I'm new to reading outside of the story only thread so feel free to ignore, I'm sure you guys have already noticed and discussed it at length but I thought I should through it out there before I forget.

"It's not about control. It's about achieving unity with your desires and-."

"Yes. 'Enlightenment' you call it. What fascinating soul structures your species must have.
Partial enlightenment you mean.

Complete Enlightenment involves attaining a state of perfect knowledge or wisdom, combined with infinite compassion.

Paul, to me, being currently locked in the Orange part of the emotional spectrum, seems to attained more of a spiritual "Enlightened Self-interest", so he's got some work ahead of him before he can get the full monty!

Yeah, but she wasn't awake when he gave up the ring. For all she knew the other controllers had to bully him into it, or he had to spend an hour psyching himself up or something. She already knew that he could give something up, but him doing it where she could see it meant she could judge how difficult it was for him (and by extension, how well he was resisting the orange light).

This was the point I was going to make as well.

There's a huge difference between giving something up while you're conscious and using your empathic vision to see Paul do it with your very eyes.

Does that mean that saying his own name would also be possible while not wearing the ring? Including the surname?
No.
