No No no people the controller granny isn't for being shipped with Paul.
She's there to try and pester him into getting a girl.

Come on boy, test subjects don't breed themselves....wait does your species reproduce asexually?

"No we do not."

Then find a few mates, I need more data and that means test subjects.

Supplication/adherence to authority? Paul wants the Controllers to be in charge of his corp, he worked for the JL. Grayven worked for/with the US government. They both seem pretty determined to do things through legal means, despite how little they actually need to.

pro·pri·e·ty
p(r)əˈprīədē/
noun
  1. the state or quality of conforming to conventionally accepted standards of behavior or morals.
Perhaps the answer to the second compulsion lies here? Might also explain why his behavior was so "odd" when dealing with the Reach- a different set of conventionally accepted standards of behaviors or morals in the case of a mind-controlling alien empire.

The only things that I can think of that are 'off' about Paul I'm going to list here:
1) Paul could have reasonably had a 'be a superhero' compulsion, and he did it unthinkingly, despite this being Earth-16, which is somewhat less of a death world.
2) Paul seems to almost obsessively try to improve himself.
3) A compulsion around generosity?
4) I find it to be somewhat weird that there was no information about Maltus on the ring. THere might be a compulsion on it to forget about it?

Mr. Zoat, by Richard I assume you mean robin, right?

Just making sure, as you never know with eldritch abominations.
Well, I suppose being the apprentice of Batman and being a part of the team makes him more or less optimal for the role.
Was the well done around noticing that he never thought of the rings as his the other compulsion, or just an unaffiliated insightful remark?
What is the mechanism behind the compulsion?
Another random guess on my end would be his anti-hoardingness, where whenever someone did hoard, he even found it somewhat distasteful. Everything he has he thinks of as an asset (aside from relationship, because he isn't a sociopath), and is something that he is willing to expend.

It's beautiful, really. Almost a shame to discharge it. Not that it'll stop me. I raise it back up and hold out my ring. Certainly don't need the Ophidian's help with this mission, thank you very much.

Ha! Right there! He said MY RING. I had to search...not "My ring scans." not "My ring HUD." just plain old "My ring." as in the ring that is MINE.

I'm all happy with myself now. Even if it doesn't count for some reason.

This is probably a fluke, tbh, not intentional. When you write more than 1 million words, it's easy to not keep that consistent.

Unfortunately, if it is about never referring to the ring as his, then a) even one slip up is enough to make it something you can't reasonably feel clever about people not guessing, and b) "propriety" is not the right word to use to link to that. While obviously, ownership is an important concept to the orange light, I'm also not sure what the point of that compulsion would be. The ring already operates as if it were specifically attuned to him.

Good heavens, she actually might be a Washu analogue! I was not expecting that!

Found a few more. This is skipping things like "my ring hand/finger" and "my ring-generated XXX" which Paul is rather fond of using. Sorry for accidentally posting this in Story Only. Forgot that I needed to hit back more than once to get through multiple pages.
