Transposition, or: Ship Happens [Worm/Aoki Hagane no Arpeggio | Arpeggio of Blue Steel]

*groans in approval of the pun*
"Oh I'm a timber wolf and I'm okay, I howl all night and I sleep all day..." :D

... Lung is a furry fan. Who knew? Probably the girls at "the Farm," but that's too dark a sudden swerve for this humorous digression. Let's leave that alone.

Great, now I have the plot bunny of canon Taylor running around looking for fights... and always showing up a minute late. Eh, sounds like it end up like a bad Burn Up.

So, something like Saitama, except her power is the ability to change reality so her enemies are defeated before she even arrives?

That DOES have some potential if a decent crackfic writer gets hold of it.

"Why did you name yourself Lung when it's not actually Chinese, let along Japanese, for Dragon?"
True. However, dragon is Lóng in Mandarin Chinese and Lung would be an acceptable pronunciation.
The problem is that "wolf", or "lang" in pinyin, is closer to how we'd read "Lung", so...
"Lung" is how it's written in the old Wade-Giles romanization system, which despite being officially replaced by Pinyin in 1958, is nonetheless still used in places outside the mainland (such as Taiwan) even to this day.

Eh, more just that she'd be really unlucky, in my head. Or lucky, I guess? Same effect, just have to work harder to justify why. It would not be the first story I'd try though :)

Or Japan? Ya know, where Lung is from?

I could also totally see him deliberately using the out-of-date, unofficial, and/or Cantonese pronunciation of the word, purely to piss off the Yangban. A metaphorical middle-finger pointed at the bastards who imprisoned and tortured him, if you will.
By that you mean use deliberate weaknesses and vulnerabilities left for her opponents by the author for the express purpose of making her win or survive. It's not that shes creative,it was the only option she was given.
Well, yes, there are very few good stories built around heroes who are incompetent losers.
That's not really his claim, though. His claim seems to be that Wildbow deliberately gave Skitter's opponents either weak-points that could be exploited for victory, or some way to at least survive the experience. Which is actually pretty insulting to Wildbow. I don't think he's so creatively bankrupt he needed to give himself and his characters training wheels by working a deliberate weakness into the side he wanted to lose.

I mean, you don't even really need to do that with most characters, because they usually have at least some weakness that the rest of humanity shares. Like, you know, the ones biology and evolution gave us? That are readily obvious and exploitable, without needing to work them in post-character creation?

It's actually kinda asinine if you think about it. It's rather similar to saying "wow, Shadow Stalker can't see in pitch-blackness. Clearly, this was done so that Grue could escape from her/beat her multiple times." Because, you know, things like that, or needing to breathe are such rare faults in humanity. I'm assuming he's thinking of Alexandria as an example of this, since it seems like the most possible example.

Edit: And, if my memory isn't failing me, Skitter was surprised that worked on Alexandria as well as it did. As was everyone else, because they were so used to Alexandria lacking the same flaws they had, physically speaking.

No, Japan uses Pinyin – or rather the closest phonetic equivalent that their speech palettes are capable of, anyway.

(Look at DBZ for the most blatant example: 神龍 Shénlóng ("god/spirit dragon") → "Shenron".)

Fair enough. That said, Cantonese, and not Mandarin, is actually pretty likely to be the language both Lung and the gang-members in Brockton Bay would be used to, judging by some additional data I turned up.

Apparently, the vast majority of the Chinese who settled down in the US up until recently were from Guangdong and the surrounding area, aka the main area Cantonese is spoken. Also, the main transliteration for Cantonese, which was meant sound things out for English speakers, spells it 'lúhng'. Which makes 'Lung' more phonetically appropriate than 'Long', for the Cantonese word. So...

Relentless, Dragonslayer by adisander
I have not done creative writing in years, and do not know how. Nonetheless, I shall inflict you with this, because it popped into my head at an opportune time.

Relentless, Dragonslayer

I blinked in confusion at the armored man in front of me. "You want to what?"

"Team up," the guy who had called himself Saint confirmed. "You seem to be in the business of dragon slaying, and we have one you might be interested in."

I wondered how they'd even come to that conclusion. I supposed I had taken down two dragons, more than most, but, "You do know I didn't kill the one, right?"

"And that makes it all the better. We only keep this one in check, for now, as it's still useful, but for the case that it goes too far, we'd like to have you on our side."

Darkening the eyes of my helmet, I scoured the internet for information on Saint looking for just who this dragon might be, which took me to the Dragonslayers, and Dragon, which just increased my confusion. Why would they think I'd help them fight one of the greatest heroes in the world?

I decided to fish for more information personally, and asked "Who? And why?"

"Dragon," he stated, completely serious. What I'd found had indicated they were somewhat obsessed with her, so it wasn't that much of a surprise.

"She's an AI who's been working her way into power for years," he continued, still dead serious.

---

And that's how I defeated two dragons and saved a third. And gained an older sister.

...I want details...

...I want details...
I feel that would spoil it.

I mean, given Taylor's state, she's not likely to appreciate being accidentally thrown into the 'soulless machine' category which is basically what Saint would be doing. At which point it'd be easy to assume she'd look at the situation (Saint: Known villain, mercenary, vs Dragon: respected long time hero), realise Saint is a twat, and smack him down hard.

And if he's right there talking to her and thinking she's going to help him, that's not a fight that's going to last long. Adding details just to show "...and then Taylor punched Saint in the face until he stopped waggling his mouth stupidly at her, the end." when it can be left open ended to let us imagine it for ourselves wouldn't be worth it.

Well, I do see Saint bringing along Ascalon to show Taylor evidence of Dragon's AI-ness and Taylor turning it into "nanomaterials, daughter". And then the curbstomping begins.

Nice, but it's doubtful they would trust a hero with their hardware or their lair's location. It's more likely that only Saint appears before Relentless, with one of his minions in a suit hidden somewhere "just in case", and only bringing Ascalon as anti-AI evidence.

What Saint doesn't know is that the most casual touch by Taylor, and she will have filled the Ascalon case with enough nanomaterials to first infiltrate and second, analyze both hardware and software to finally be able to replicate it.

So, if she touches the closed case, and then refuses the offer, Saint will leave, not knowing he's carrying a Trojan Horse able to "recruit" additional materials to execute the takeover of both the suits and the base.

Chronologically, yes, but Relentless may have unintentionally killed Taylor.
If you are killed by being Uploaded or not is a question that depends on the method of uploading and is mostly philosophical anyway. Some say yes, as long as it's a perfect copy. Some say no, the soul moved on with the body and the upload is just a soulless copy.

Taylor, in this story, wonders if she's still Taylor or just a machine that thinks its Taylor. It's one of the things she told Danny about, using the Ship of Theseus as an example.

Until @ensou says what it is we have no way of knowing.
