To Deal With Snakes
[X] Relieved. Everything starts to make sense, it was never you. The Ge were the true enemy hiding behind Leng Jun and manipulating things to the detriment of all. For the good of Xinshen, you will inform the prefect about your suspicions and act with him together for a brighter future for Xinshen.

You are taken aback at first, leaning a hand against the tree you relieved yourself against only moments before. You can scarcely believe this is true, that the treachery of a family you considered friends had spread so deep throughout the region. Ge Maiyu...had you not sworn promises together to fight side by side for a better Xinshen? Had there not been a single crumb of sincerity in her words from the very start? They sought to exploit you, manipulate you, use you and discard you, like they had done to so many before. Like they had even done to Leng Jun, it had seemed. It was becoming clear that, assuming Yu Zhong was right, any friendship you had ever considered you had with Ge Maiyu had been a farce, a mummery all along. Ge Lang had only shown you kindness and favours to assist in carrying out his own agendas, as if you were a common weiqi piece being placed on a board. For a moment, as you think this over, and recollect every interaction you ever had with that clan, you start to worry, you start to doubt, you begin to reveal from these multitude of revelations..

And then, you smile. You step away from the tree. The smile on your face grows, and grows, until it stretches from cheek to cheek. Then, you let out a chuckle. It is low, almost guttural. Deep in tone, you feel it rise from the very depths of your stomach, and it rises until it uncontrollably bellows out of your mouth. The revelation of this betrayal is a relief, you feel lighter than you have in months. As you watch Yu Zhong raise his eyebrows in surprise at you, you cover your mouth, stifling back further mirth and chuckles.

"Ha...haha...Ex...excellent work, Yu Zhong. Haha. Good, good." You manage to get out, before you prevent yourself from blurting out into full on guffawing. "Hahaha. Good, good. This news is most advantageous indeed. Now that I think about it, this is actually quite relieving!"

"Liang Shu?" Yu Zhong gives you a curious glance, head tilted very slightly to the right as he looks you over.

"Hahaha. Since New Year, or even before then, I knew there was a snake somewhere around here. I was well aware of the presence of vermin, ready to sink its fangs and spread its venom the moment I was exposed and vulnerable. Truthfully, I have been concerned about this for quite some time, I have lost more than a few hours of sleep over this." You pace back and forth, once hand behind your back. With your other arm, you hold an index finger high, and begin waggling it in the air as you step. "I was finding it difficult to trust anyone, and I had to focus all my thoughts and senses on military affairs and the bandit dilemma, lest I got lost in a maze of paranoia within my own mind. Now, it is as if I have been woken from a bad dream, with bright morning rays illuminating the truth before me! Yu Zhong, my dear friend, your words are tonic to me, curing me of this...this plague I was suffering from." Everything is becoming clear. You know what has to be done. You know now what you have to do.

Yu Zhong gives a wry smile, and a quick flourish of his arm. "I am only glad to be of service, and I can only express regret that my suspicions seem to have come to fruition, Liang Shu."

You stop pacing, look at him, and shake your hand. "Regret? Do not feel regret! This betrayal has cut deep, and that family of vipers means nothing to me anymore, Yu Zhong." Your smile stretches wider. And wider. "Hahaha. I can see now I have been concentrating too much on the enemy without. I never quite imagined such terrible treachery had infested the very heart of Xinshen, not after I had Leng Jun disposed of. Indeed, it seems now they played their own hand in contributing to the miserable fate that befell this land following the death of my father. I have sworn a solemn and sacred oath, Yu Zhong, on the still unavenged shrine of my ancestors, that I would save this county of Xinshen. I will bring decisive judgement to the Ge, just as I intend to lead us in bringing these accursed brigand wretches to the sword."

"Yes, indeed. I am most pleased to hear those words, Liang Shu." Yu Zhong smiles at you, flicking his wrists. "I shall continue my investigations then. We shall need more evidence and uncover the full truth of this sorry affair. I do believe, however, that to the Ge, this will be akin to us kicking a leg off a table. It will only be a matter of time before the whole thing collapses."

"Yes. Yes, we will do this properly. They will pay dearly for what they have done, Yu Zhong. I am a man of my word. Ge Lang, Ge Maiyu, Ge Dejun, and anyone else involved in this betrayal will be made to severely regret their actions. The whole nest of snakes must be exterminated, lest any of their poison leak." As you say this, you feel your eyes widening, your breath shortening, your hand clenching into a fist. "Trust me on this, Yu Zhong! I will not allow them to escape justice for what they have done. Xinshen is my home! Xinshen is my county! I vowed to protect it and restore it to tranquillity, and that is what I will do!"

"That is what we will do." Yu Zhong gives you a nod. "You can continue to count on my utmost support in this matter, as ever, Liang Shu."

You barely hear this, as your mind harkens back to words someone else said to you a few months back...words of a man who, although ever distant, you have come to respect more and more.

It was not just words, you remember them as clearly as if he had just said them to you.

They were a lesson.

They were advice.

They were wisdom.

"You should already start planning for what you intend to do, Liang Shu. A quick death will be too easy, I imagine. Think about all the pain and suffering that he has caused you, all the misery he has wrought your family."

"...you should savour every moment. As you bring him pain, as you spill his blood slowly, drop by drop, I want you to look him in the eyes, Liang Shu."

"Gain pleasure from the pain of your nemesis, boy. Let his screams fill your ears and echo in your mind and heart. Allow him for beg for mercy, allow him to plead for a swift demise at your hands."

You find Yu Zhong flinching slightly, as you stare ahead, unblinking at him. With a low hiss of a voice, you whisper to him.

"I will make them pay for this, Zhong. I will boil them for what they have done. The Ge will rot."

For the slightest of moments, Yu Zhong seems almost a little uneasy. Then, his usual jovial smile returns, as he offers a slight bow. "Poignant words indeed, Liang Shu. They deserve nothing less. Now, may I make a suggestion? I believe that it is in our best interest to hurry to present this information to Prefect Zhang Xiu, before the battle begins. I advise we waste no time, lest the Ge decide to use their venom against us."

"Yes." You take a deep breath, to calm yourself. You remind yourself that you still have to do things by the ancient laws of the Han, lest you be the one painted as a villain by history. "Yes, you are of course correct. Very well, let us make haste to return to the city, and plea for an audience with the Prefect. If nothing else, Zhang Xiu needs to be warned."

==

"My thanks, gentlemen, for bringing these matters to my attention." Zhang Xiu says with a weary sigh, as he sits behind his desk in the dimly lit council chambers. The room is otherwise empty aside from you and Yu Zhong, sat across from each other, and the darkly robed adviser of Zhang Xiu, as ever lurking in the back behind the prefect. "It appears that you have added a few more strokes of paint to the picture of corruption and malice that we have already uncovered in recent days. My own official investigations into these matters seem to have ran parallel to your own."

"You know of the Ge's treachery as well, Prefect Zhang?" Yu Zhong asks.

Zhang Xiu gives a careful and measured reply. "Evidence and statements are being gathered. So far, should all these prove to be true, the Ge clan have worrying designs on this county."

"Then I beg that you do something to stop them, Prefect Zhang!" You say, perhaps not quite as measured as you have hoped. "Their crimes are a multitude, their villainy clear!"

Zhang Xiu raises a hand. "We are in agreement, however, I must act with caution here. Forgive me, but there is very little I can do for now, Liang Shu. Firstly, I am concerned about arresting our own allies on the eve before such a climatic battle. As concerning and worrying the rumours I have heard about Master Ge Dejun may be, he is still a leader of a local defence force. Morale may collapse if we turn on each other. His followers and men may mutiny and riot. We need a united front if we are survive this bandit invasion, this is not the time to be drawing our blades against each other. Secondly, lord Ge Lang is very respected among the local elites and gentry. Popular support may turn against us should we bring him to court without sufficient evidence. I understand fully how you must feel, but for now, Liang Shu, I must ask that you wait until after these battles have concluded. Once we have driven away these mountain brigands, we can turn our full attention to internal affairs. Until then, we shall rely on the Ge for their support, for the sake of Xinshen itself."

As much as you want to take rash action yourself, you have to admit that Zhang Xiu does have a point here. The Ge family has many supporters in the region, and you doubt they or their client clans will remain passive if decisive action was taken. For the time being at least, you realise it is best to at least feign ignorance to your knowledge of this affair, and make use of whatever manpower and resources the Ge can bring to the war effort. Even if it might hurt your heart, bluffing continued friendship with those rats is the rational and logical move.

For now, at least.

"Your words are wise, Prefect Zhang." You give him a salute. "Let us forget about this matter for now, then, and concentrate fully on the short term issue of the bandit incursion."

He gives a slight smile, and a nod. "Yes, indeed. A war council shall be held here tomorrow morning. I am counting on you and yours to attend, Liang Shu. We shall tolerate these rebels and caitiffs no longer. Tomorrow, we shall act to scurry and scatter them before us for good."

With that, salutes are shared, and the meeting comes to an end.

As you and Yu Zhong pace silently through the garden of the administration building towards the gates, you hear soft footsteps behind you. Turning around, you see a somewhat hurried Jia Xu, trying to get your attention.

"Master Jia." Yu Zhong says respectfully, giving the adviser a bow of reverence.

"My apologies, dear sirs, I did not want to keep you too long." Jia Xu speaks, "However, I did not want to see you leave without sharing with you some knowledge and insight that may prove useful for your battlefield preparations."

You fold your arms. "Oh? What insight might this be? Please, master, I would be honoured if you would enlighten us."

He gives a very slight smile. "It has come to my attention that our ally, the Master Ge Dejun, is desperate for glory and plaudits in the coming battles. It is well known that he seeks to make his own name for himself and win fame, and is eager indeed to ride to war." Jia Xu says. "As he is so confident in his abilities, would it not be best to let him have an opportunity? After all, Master Liang, the names of you and your lieutenants are already on the lips of all within this region, and much further beyond even. Rather than attempt to seize yet more glories for yourselves, perhaps it would be prudent to take a humbler approach? Master Ge Dejun will be itching to take the vanguard tomorrow, I am sure he would be most appreciative if you allow him this opportunity to prove himself. After all, a warrior and leader of his capabilities is sure to make a great impact if allowed to show the world his true colours, and I am sure all would agree it would be a shame indeed should harm or ignobility befall him."

"Indeed. We shall take this into consideration, Master Jia. My thanks indeed for this most useful knowledge." Yu Zhong responds, in a way that you know he is already formulating a ploy. As you two continue to make your way back to your encampment, you believe you have a very good idea yourself what Jia Xu might have been implying...

Well, looks like Jia Xu was reading my mind. Let Ge Dejun make a fool of himself and maybe lure Chu Yan's forces into complacency, then pounce as we ride to the rescue. This will add to the Azure Lances' track record: Allies ambushed, Azure Lances countercharge.

Um, should we be worried that Liang Shu is starting to take advice from Dong Zhou to heart? I mean, I am in favor of siding with Dong Zhou at this stage should the choice between Zhou and Ding happen since he's helped us as much as he had, but I still feel nervous about taking that advice to heart.

Also Liang Shu's reaction in general puts me a bit on edge.

After Liang is supposed to be genuine noble and heroic, and this was uh, not that.

(I guess I should have voted on something after all. Even though I didn't really like the second choice either.)

From what I can gather, Dong Zhuo isn't quite as...questionable yet as he would become one day, depending on what Records you look at. So taking his advice right now isn't too bad.

I think it's more I take the advice of happily wanting to torture a person before you killed them just for how their actions negatively affect you and your family to be what I don't really like.

And I don't want Liang Shu to continue in this dark path. It's pretty telling that Yu Zhong, the 'token evil teammate', is a bit uneasy about Liang's reaction that Liang is potentially starting to go down a dark path. So trying to stop from continuing down that path is probably a priority. Especially since I like Liang Shu as the heroic, noble and humble character he's been so far.

Now, while I like the idea of our naive, self-worth lacking protagonist taking a direction of pragmatism and ambition from Dong Zhou ... this isn't quite what I had in mind. More 'Machiavellian understanding of the world' and less 'Give In To Your Hate,' ideally.

The only problem with letting, Ge Dejun, lead the vanguard is the possibility that he might die a martyr and hero, which would make taking down the Ge Clan even more challenging.

I was hoping for a more ruthless path at the most, but uh... Going almost Sithlike is certainly a take.

It does mean we need to tread carefully on what choices we make going forward. But at this point his temper is hot, the coming battle should prove a suitable outlet to allow him to clear his head.

In other news we have 25 reform and I would suggest we spend it all on military reforms.

Possible packages-
Quick Nock (10 Renown) Archers and crossbowmen reload slightly faster.
Swift Disengage (10 Renown) Cavalry can pull back from combat and regroup quicker.
and one of
Forceful Cleave (5 Renown) Troops with Axes deal more damage to shielded targets.
Heavy Impact (5 Renown) Troops with Bludgeons deal more damage against Armoured targets.

or replace the first two with
Heroic Spectacle (20 Renown) Will earn Renown from winning duels.

I do favor swift disengage since that lets us cycle charge our cav and cav is meant to charge not stand in extended melee. That and quick nock to give our good sized ranged force more shots and we did pick up Far Shot for increased range already. We have defenses, let them die as our archers rain fire onto them.

I favor Forceful Cleave given that we have 230 Axemen on foot and another 110 mounted troops that use the axe to back up the halbred. In contrast the only troops with bludgeon weapons are our ranged troops who use it for melee if pressed.

Thus my current reform package is:

[ ] Plan Mount, Axes and Bows
-[ ] Quick Knock (10 Renown)
-[ ] Swift Disengage (10 Renown)
-[ ] Forceful Cleave (5 Renown)

"I will make them pay for this, Zhong. I will boil them for what they have done. The Ge will rot."
If that's Liang Shu when he's relieved. . . imagine if we voted for angry. 😨

Army-wise:
Ce Family Irregulars
Troop Count- 18
Training - Regulars
- Halberds and Armour

Ce Clan Regulars
Troop Count - 96
Training - Regulars
- Halberds, Armour
I think we should merge those 2 units.
Unless there's a reason not to?

And we have 230 Wealth, I think?
Not sure what we should spend that on, if anything.

With 25 Renown, we should be able to get some useful Reforms.
These 3 seem useful, right before a battle:
Quick Nock (10 Renown)
Under the noise and pressure of battle, it can be difficult for bowmen to nock their bows swiftly, at least without the proper training.
Archers and crossbowmen reload slightly faster.

Swift Disengage (10 Renown)

Forceful Cleave (5 Renown)

The bottom of the Azure Lances spoiler has our surplus:
Surplus Equipment
880 Wealth
312 Swords, 354 Axes, 140 Bows, 120 Spears, 244 Shields, 140 Armour, 190 Bludgeons, 32 Halberds and 67 Steeds, all T1

Also yeah merging those two units for ease of tracking would be nice. No way we are detaching 19 foot at this stage. (19 cav on the other hand....)

Well it could be the surprise of finding out people you consider friends had been playing you and using you as a pawn and planning to get you killed that caused Shu to have this reaction he might not have it once given a chance to calm down

Also they killed his father and had been helping the bandits he's witnessed tormenting the peasantry. All to maintain control of their petty little commandery

Bed time for me - vote will be open in roughly five hours.

(And yeah "relieved" was a pretty odd reaction imo which may have contributed to some things)

To be fair, relieved is an extremely abnormal reaction to such visceral betrayal. Honestly voting for a normal and healthy reaction to such a thing probably would have worked out better.
In addition I believe this reaction may have made Liang a far more controlling person. Now he'll always be confident in his control of his people and side...meaning anytime that faith gets shaken he could end up getting a bit paranoid.
