Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
New reader (started reading the Royal Road version at the end of July, then went back and read the full quest + this one), finally at the frontlines and ready to participate in discussion!

The last choice was this:

[] A competitive hunt. No one will be using arts of course, as it would be unsporting. More opportunity to build bonds, but competition may breed resentment…
[] A cooperative hunt against a more cunning beast. Increased difficulty means less chance to play the social game, but impressive skills may bring admiration...

So it feels like this choice is "do we want to double down on our choice last round and try to impress people, or do we want to compensate for our lack of socializing?"

That said, @yrsillar, I am a bit confused:

Ling Qi considered the question, she did not doubt that she could suppress her qi and appear much weaker than she was. On the other hand it was a less impressive role.

This seems to contradict:

[] Ling Qi would take the role of bait, it was the best use of her abilities within the limitations of the hunt. It would be more impressive and she was suited to protecting the other 'bait' cultivators.

I think that what's intended is what's presented in the choice -- i.e. "being bait is more impressive" -- but perhaps I have misunderstood, and possibly others have too?

"What occured on the peak of the Outer Mountain? What happened to the peak guardian?" Alingge asked. "Rumors flow like water, but the truth is unclear."

Well, this girl is direct. Has to be mountains of speculation, but she just asks us straight up.

"I had been learning from the spirit at the peak for the better part of a year," Ling Qi answered after a moment. "Between teaching me and some other complications in her Way…"

"The ice child," Alingge murmured as she guided her mount through the tangle of trees and brush.

"...Yes," Ling Qi admitted. "She wanted her daughter to be able to leave and live," Ling Qi felt a surge of melancholy as she thought back to those final moments on the peak. She remembered Zeqing's cracked face and Hanyi's tears. "Even if it was for a short time, as her student I wanted to respect her wishes."

Sorta surprised Qi was that willing to explain, that was a pretty personal and painful event for her.

"I admire your integrity," Alingge said frankly. She did seem distracted though glancing over Ling Qi's shoulder, she must have been able to sense Sixiang to an extent. "Few would value their connection to a spirit so highly in these days."

We just got points with Alingge for respecting our bond with a spirit so much, I love it, we love and treasure our spirits and our former teacher. This has some degree of relevance to Qi's current struggle to determine the moral personhood of spirits, and I would love for Qi to pick Alingge's brain for her thoughts on the subject.

[] Ling Qi would take the role of bait, it was the best use of her abilities within the limitations of the hunt. It would be more impressive and she was suited to protecting the other 'bait' cultivators.

I'm definitely inclined to not pick the role that we aren't very good at, this is a cooperative exercise and we should be attempting to contribute.

I actually like the idea of using a not that impressive archery art and just going, "Tee-hee, see I'm just like you. I don't always have to be angling to show people up."

I mean, Ling Qi came to this party... let's spent at least a little time talking with people and socializing.

We don't need to be so incredibly arrogant as to think the success of the hunt rides of her shoulders and that it's going to be some kind of disaster if she doesn't play bait.

I want to tank here.

I like being unapproachable. Our agenda is competency.

Luo managed to put the selection of beast on us, and the next strongest cultivator can say "I told them it was a bad idea"

If someone gets hurt here, it needs to be us.

We won't though, we got this.

Bait I think, would be best

I'd rather commit to the course we've taken rather than attempt to backtrack and hang back being less useful with the archers

It's the job we're more suited for, and will better allow us to support and protect the people at risk, ensuring a successful hunt is rather important here, an unsuccessful hunt would put a damper on any attempt at social, especially if whoever does play bait gets mauled

[X] Ling Qi would stay and hide herself with the other archers, she had already showed off in helping Alingge quickly isolate their target. Now was the time to catch up on her original goals.

I think Ling Qi should socialize a bit. In particular, the two guys that smelled like Moon seem interesting.

Also guys, Resilience is at 23/25, and I'm roughly 100% certain a Mirage Lion opens with a !TotallyNotElegyOfTheLost spiritual attack from an ambush.

Being Bait might get us the advanced skill "Quit Your Bullshit", so I want.

Our defensive support abilities are quite good and those will be used if we're among the bait. I'd be okay with archery if we weren't running the risk of injury for the lower cultivation nobles, which would in turn hurt our reputation.

Agreed.

If we still had a spotter/fire team support art like FZ kept current I would like archer squad, but that ain't us.

We haven't shown off the absurdity that is TRF's squad tankiness in the sect yet as I recall, let's do that.

is there any risk of a striker 'accidentally' hitting her as bait?

Well, the enemy is called a Mirage Lion, so if anything has a Misdirect Tank kit that sounds about right.

I'm fine with assuming that anybody that falls for that can't hit us, though.

Edit: Oh, you meant on purpose, Cersai v Robert style.

That would be slapping Cai in the face in front of witnesses. 0% chance, not gonna happen unless everyone their is on the same page.

No... I don't think so.

Hitting us, should we be bait, even accidentally, would look terrible for the perpetrator and with Luo there it would end poorly. There would be no gain for them, we would get to play the victim, and it would create the narrative that our opponents are brutes who can't even do conflict tactfully.

It would have to be a true accident, which would not put them into a good light.

So low chance here but if there're cubs I want to send a letter to Han Jian and ask him how many GSS it's worth for him.

This would be the perfect 2nd spirit for him.

Like...perfect.

definitely want to do this

After thinking about it some, I believe we should be bait. Here is my thinking:

Our goal in this entire exercise was "try to repair our bad reputation among Emerald Seas nobility." Why do we have a bad reputation? Well, they resent us for being upjumped gutter trash who now sits at the left hand of their Duchess's heir, taking honor and favor that belongs to their class by birthright. We could try to fix this by getting to know them, being approachable, and "playing the game" as it were. Being one of them.

I... don't think that plays to our strengths. Both as a result of our circumstances (common birth, high native Talent and a work ethic/ambitious outlook to capitalize on it) and as a result of the choices we've made (Bai Meizhen as our freshman roommate, becoming CRX's retainer, and our focus on music as a cornerstone of our developing Way), we're naturally going to stand out. We aren't a social infiltrator by temperament or ability, even if we do possess the skills of a physical infiltrator: we're engineered to take the center of attention. We're never going to fit in easy-breezy with the nobility of the Emerald Seas, so we might as well accept that and leverage the status we do have; I don't think we can win their love, but we can at least get their grudging admiration. Gossip along the lines of "Well, she's an unapproachable workaholic of low birth, but she gets results for our province" is our target, I feel.

Finally, the last choice we made in the thread was about "cooperative hunt vs. competitive hunt", and we were told for cooperative "Increased difficulty means less chance to play the social game, but impressive skills may bring admiration...". We're committed to that at this point, so we should double down and strive to impress, rather than half-ass being a social butterfly.

(Also, like, it's Some Crap to come back from scouting and tell the boss "Yup, we decided that someone would be bait, onetwothreeNOTIT". That's bound to engender resentment. The nobles might grumble that we are a glory hound, but at least we aren't passing the buck. And hey, if things go south, we have a ton of good arts for protecting both ourselves and the weaker people on this hunt.)

So.
Ling Qi can totally do the bait thing, she'd be good for it and it keeps that Lion from eating our would-be peers. So!

May the dice be kind...Or at least ensure it's Wu Jing or his cronies that get eaten.

is there any risk of a striker 'accidentally' hitting her as bait?
Not really no
I understand that some people may be worried about sabotage during the hunt, and while I won't deny that it is technically possible, it would have to be more far subtle than that
Luo is by all appearances being genuine in his attempt at offering Ling Qi a chance to socialize, and even if he weren't, deliberately setting up an invitation to bully a direct Cai vassal would not do kind things to his reputation
With that in mind the treatment of a guest on a social occasion like this hunt reflects upon the host
If people overtly insult Ling Qi in egregious ways they are slapping Luo in the face since he invited her
If they outright attack her then they could almost be considered attacking Luo as well
If they simply sabotage the hunt itself they also risk embarrassing Luo, who is hosting the event

None of this is factoring the rules of the Inner Sect itself, which are more strictly enforced and forbid harming one another outside of sanctioned duels

Now, there might be certain nobles who don't care about all that, but I don't think they dislike Ling Qi enough to complicate things so
The ES nobles are mostly envious of her position and success, they don't have personal grudges to settle or anything

I think bait is best.
Our main goal was fulfilled simply by attending.
Next step is to not fuck it up, which social games have higher change of.
Also, if someone gets hurt because we decided to hang back, that reflects badly on us.
Instead, as a bait we minimize those risks, and have the possibility of impressing people with skills that are our stronger point.

We will need to socialize more in the long run, but not yet, let's get a good start here, find some social arts, brush up on our talky skills and then try to not fuck up a conversation.

Because i don't even want to imagine the amount of crap we'd have to deal with if whoever gets picked as bait ends up (severely) wounded !
No matter what Lou Zong says it's quite apparent to everyone that the one that actually decided what hunt we were going to do is Ling Qi, and she is also the one that picked and argued for a rather high leveled prey.
Leaving the actual dangerous role to someone else is far from the Noblesse Oblige that CRX wants to implement.

I'm not convinced Ling Qi is better as bait than attacker, but

Suggesting someone be bait, then expecting someone else to fulfill that role feels like a social trap, and her scouting and tracking skills have already been shown.

Isolate herself as bait, then admit minor weakness in wanting to work on her archery skills with a team

That really depends though. Our arts are very well suited to being bait - and it sounds like there will be a team of us being bait, so our ability to shield others could be very valuable here. Wu Jing isn't wrong that a threshold beast could be very dangerous to many here. It depends on what other's arts are. I'd prefer to frame things in terms of where we can best contribute here, but we aren't getting the chance to discuss that with them :(
