Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
She isn't distancing herself from them, two chapters ago she talked about how she misses them and that she wished they were closer (distance wise) like the Ling family.

Qiyi extended ribbons from her color, brushing suspiciously over the foreign cloth.

It was only temporary, she assured her gown.

Qiyi could do better.
Qiyi being all adorably possessive of her role as Ling Qi's clothing.

Happily, as has been amply demonstrated, Lin Qi is entirely okay with only ever wearing the same dress for the rest of her life. "Ever having a wardrobe of more than 1" is one of the things that she has no problem discarding along the Way.

Is it intentional that almost every onscreen interaction between Ling Qi and Qiyi involves Ling Qi denying or scolding Qiyi instead of anything more positive?

It is not scolding. There is no ire or judgement in it. What is happening is that Qiyi is constantly pushing boundaries little by little (at least in part to find out where the boundaries are) and then Ling Qi is... telling her where the boundaries are. Sometimes Ling Qi does let herself be convinced, though.

Past that? In this update alone, let's look at their interactions.

- Qiyi expresses enthusiasm for being washed. Ling Qi calls her a good girl for it (though she notes that Qiyi does not require such things, strictly speaking,)

- Qiyi gets concerned about the fact that Ling Qi is wearing somethign that is not her. Ling Qi reassures her that it is temporary. Qiyi grumbles that she could do better. Ling Qi says that now is not the time, but she can experiment with it later.

I'm seeing both reassurance and outright praise. Does this not count as more positive?

...but one of the things that's going on is that this is a negotiation. Ling Qi and Qiyi have pretty much committed to a (very) close partnership that will likely last as long as they both live. Ways are like that. They're working out between them how that's going to work... and of the two of them, Qiyi is the one that is the more energized and excited and full of pertinent ideas that she wants to try. So yes, the process of achieving a proper balance between them is going to involve a lot of Ling Qi saying "no" (or, as in this case, "not yet") because the fundamental discussion format is "Qiyi suggests or asks for something, and then Ling Qi agrees or turns her down." If she tries to avoid saying "no" because she doesn't want to say "no", then she's going to wind up with her appearance decided for her by a manic spirit of wild sartorial creativity with No Brakes. That would make her appear bizarre to others as well as making her feel incredibly uncomfortable. That's not the relationship they have... and that's a good thing.

And this conversation is why I was pushing so hard for the Mystery option for Qiyi instead of the Power one. I thought it would mesh better with Ling Qi's desired aesthetics.

Honestly I like cute enthusiastic Qiyi more than I would have liked a more reserved version mystery may have led to.

Basically Ling Qi is dealing with a toddler who wants to explore and jump in muddy puddles. And that dynamic involves saying no a lot.

This made me reflect on what a rarity Ling Qingge is among Ling Qi's social circles, as a Normal Ass Parent. She's not dead, she's not a distant and disinterested noble, she's not emotionally broken, and she's not an inhuman monster. She's just a lady, who is a mother, and who mothers within view of anyone nearby who cares to look.
I'm gonna disagree. Ling Qingge has a ton of issues, and used to have more. Lady has a guilt out the wazoo, and issues with inferiority, and what not. It's impressive how well she's recovered, and how good of a parent she has been (to both her children, even with the whole ran away from home thing LQ did). But Normal Ass Parent she aint.

So far, the only candidates are Suyin's though we've never met them.

Now thinking about it, I wonder how many clans have item spirits that is handed down for a long time and how useful it would be for later generations as said item spirits could serve as reposteries of knowladge and wisdom.

Someone needs to create an Omake where a dainty little descendant of the Ling finally gets to green, and the elders are so rejoiced she can wear the Founder's Spirit Dress. And from a little princess she suddenly comes back a EVIL RiBBONED OVERLORD.

The point was that you have to say yes sometimes too, and we've not really seen that on screen.
Her hair curled and looped through a silver circlet, a glittering pale blue veil hung over her face, a high collar rose behind her head, black silk stretched between stiffer 'ribs arranged like icicles, even her hands were covered by soft silk evening gloves disappearing beneath her silver chased sleeves, the jangled with metallic icicle charms.

"...Just fulfilling a promise to try new things," Ling Qi said.

And the follow-up:

"Sparkles pretty. Spikyes bad. Sister swish like a pretty fairy, not jingle jangle."

Little one right. Spikey bad. Jingle No good. More sparkles, better ribbons. More swish. Like boots?

The boots were fine, she didn't mind the raised heels when they weren't excessive. Beside it had made riding a patrol with Xia Lin more comfortable.

Boots good!

Ling Qi is experimenting with her look in various ways with Qiyi while they come to a consensus. She's just mostly not doing it mid-adventure.

I think that was referring to Sixiang turning back up, who has manifested as an ocean of pillows in the past.
Though Qiyi enthusiastically being washed is cute. She'd want LQ right there though, so no other clothing tries anything.

...and now I want to see some interactions between Qiyi and Liming (and, of course, Ling Qi and Cai Renxiang). That one's bound to be interesting. "Try some ribbons. Just try. You'll feel better."

...or even better, having the two of them carrying on a conversation entirely by reshaping themselves as garments while Ling Qi and CRX are discussing something else altogether.
