Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
loved the flow of the investigation arc underscoring the Summit. Individual events might have been scuffed, but the general idea of "Ling Qi relies on the Ministry of Integrity to gather information, and uses that information to justify and direct her own more fearsome intrusions on critical fracture points, rinse and repeat" is a lot more appealing to me than specifically being the one who has to Do Everything. I love the idea of being a Diplomat at Large rather than just another Intrigue Advisor.
There is also the investigation against Yan Renshu's family and the Ith-ia attack on the cities. That was also great.

And it worked because we established a working relationship with the Ministry of Law, we relied on them to do the field work, and we deferred to their expertise to bait them into incriminating themselves. Nothing about this Insight says we can't do that.

[X] A good neighbor listens without spying, speaks without demanding, takes without dominating, gives without submitting. Respect is the foundation of community.

Changing my mind on this because of that little bit about clashing with the Grinning and needing to be resolved.

I really like the idea of LQ having this complicated insight about what it means to be a good neighbor and then realizing that nothing in the insight says that she has to be a good neighbor all the time.

This insight can be read as a restriction on LQ's actions... or it can be read as her IFF program...

Ling Qi will never be a spy master. She'll be able to conduct sudden unexpected raids and listen to the rumor mills but she doesn't have what it takes to be completely under everyone's radar and untraceable like a certain snake dad.

And even then her exhilaration skills are miles behind infiltration given she keeps getting discovered and people have noted her particular blend of qi elements and techniques already so I don't really see this being a hat she can even wear among everything else she's juggling.

She can complete the objective and get out of dodge but she'll never be able to say it's not her when it counts.

She can/will be fine Spymaster, spider in the middle of the web, listening for rumors and stuff. Though this insight will limit the depth she can go without being provoked, it doesn't prevent it.

For stated reasons she won't be a great Master Spy...

There are different types of intelligence, including some pretty above board stuff.

I guess LQ's niche is going to be the person who collects information from others including more sneaky types and keeping tabs on the general vibe of things. That last part is literally her superpower given the dream and communication shenanigans.

Wouldn't it be cool to pull off a heist that everybody knows about but can't do anything about?

She's mostly the party Trickster.
The one who brings weird, unexpected solutions to the problems that can't be solved properly the traditional way.
Sometimes this means spirit talking, sometimes this is infiltration, sometimes its plain diplomacy, sometimes its impossible speed.

Regular larceny is a relatively small portion.

If we take this Insight I wonder how much that will alter the Yithkai diplomacy under big tree we signed up for cause that's going to be 'fun' trying to make the Imperials act like good neighbors

It varies by cultivator still looks like physical exercise for some, but for LQ it varies between dance practice kind of activities and simply sitting under the moon on a brightnight while weaving lunar qi into your flesh and bones.
Since when is dance practice not a form of exercise?
I mean that is getting so far back that saying who is descended from who is kinda meaningless
There's a tapestry that was salty about that fact, as I recall. :p

Remember when LQ started doing the work of a Spymistress and learned that a vast majority of it was actually writing fucking letters to people and collating rumors?

Like, I didn't hallucinate the fact that we've already been given the cold facts that being a Spymaster is as much about that [gathering and collation of information] as having secret assassins to murder evildoers or whatever?

Look at the penpal network. It's not quite spying but it's also not quite NOT spying.

I actually love this idea. Make enough friends that no matter who we're dealing with there'll be someone on the inside to support us.
It's not like any clan big enough is a single monolith, there'll be enough factions that we could sneak our way in with friendship and respect. At least enough to find some proof of misdeeds.

I am being quiet optimistic of this approach, but the better diplomat we become, the easier 'spying' will become.

(Edit cas I had another thought)
We could actually grow to the point that people might report corruption within their clan to us, because they trust we wouldn't misuse that information.

That honestly seems like the logical case because if we have this we'll have to act in good faith and they'll know that.

So... am I the only one seeing a potential clash with the Ministry of Integrity around here?

And also a lot of parallels between the LQ/Six/CRX dynamic to the SimaJ/Xin/An dynamic?

Already, we're seeing LQ and CRX act as a sort of symbiotic duo and, IIRC, that was the intention for Inexorable Justice and the Great Spirit Jiao never became.

Maybe that's intentional and good? We are supposed to be iterating on the past to make a better future... or, I guess, that's kinda CRX's thing and we're kinda her thing.
