...Is it to early to speculate about the inherent romance of our new blizzard friend's snow falling across lake snowblossom? Water and snow close but never touching, forever held apart by the layer of ice that is the inevitable result of their natures mixing?

Ling Qi/The Whiteout felt the stir of envy, a sharp edge to the eternal hunger
Damn she casually Mantled the spirit that's insanely impressive.

Bao Qian slowly stood, looking up at her with a raised eyebrow. "Did you do what I think you just did?"

"That depends," Ling Qi said, slumping back to her chair. Hanyi yelped and dashed to insert herself under Ling Qi's arm, helping her cross the little camp. "I am going to have to organize a proper winter festival for Snowblossom now though. I'm glad I still have a little time."

"...You make it look so easy. Forming a fresh contract, bending a spirit into something you can properly contract with."

"I could only do it because of how close we were in nature," Ling Qi admitted. "And because the spirit was still somewhat unformed."
It's insanely impressive even if she had various things going for her while doing it.

"A thing which is too expensive will never see wide use, no matter how superior it is?" Ling Qi wondered.

"Just so, not quite a law of wealth, but definitely a law of craft," Bao Qian said. "But then, formations fight against being widely spread, it takes true genius to wrestle them into a shape that near anyone can use. True change takes ages."

"Hm, in the context of a mortal life," Ling Qi said. "I think in the perspective you spoke of, things can change quite fast."
That's pretty insightful when thinking about economics, craftsmanship and change.

She gave a shallow nod. "I am going to improve the way we in the Emerald Seas communicate. Within and without. There are so many squabbling factions, in clans and between clans, a million petty disputes and borders that snarl and tangle every single thing, that cause battles that have no need to happen. This is what I am going to contribute to the future Cai Renxiang sees."
This is pretty much what she and the quest have been angling for since she started the whole Communication thing.

"But we are very different people," Ling Qi mused. "...Come with us into the mountains tomorrow, to see to the last of the spirits, Bao Qian. I'm still not my best."

"An adventure then, to see where we stand?"

"My friends might call it a tribulation."
Ling Qi has embraced who she is.

Y'know. I just saw something terrifying, for the Empire that is.
The Emerald Sea might not have as many Ascensions as the other but all the notable ones make it incredibly likely to later turn into the center of its own Empire.

Three big ascensions in the ES
Bountiful Earth = perpetual breadbasket in the heart of a theoretical Empire
Unity of Blades = increased ability to snowball military power
Palace of One = Ideological unification becomes IMMENSELY powerful
If we have an LQ ascension then
Ling Qi potential communication-based Ascension = smooths over the rough edges of the previous two ascensions

Couple that with a competent and ambitious dynasty (hopefully the Cai) and you've got the ingredients for a powerful Kingdom/Empire.

Future Warring States Period?

Nah don't forget that ES is still really behind a lot of the provinces becuase it's spent so many centuries not unified /infighting etc while everyone else for the most part has been building up .

Food wise Zheng lands also has a decent amount too and I'm pretty sure a lot of the ascensions you're talking about also extend outside ES . So they benifit from those too , to a degree or another . The same way ppl in ES benifit from other regions ascensions too ( like the Zheng tribulation , Zheng cultivators can get drunk , etc)

Also palace of one last we saw wasn't doing too well .

Palace Of One isn't doing to well but to be perfectly honest at some point we probably want to Solve That because our political faction is absolutely predicated on the existence of Palace Of One.

Maybe, but I bet the Peaks have a few "actually we're the boss and will be super in charge forever" ascensions, coupled with useful supporting themes.

So as I understand it, Ling Qi used her and the spirits similarity to infiltrate it and change the concepts a little. I wonder if this kind of mind fuckery can be used on cultivators? Not sure if I like this, feels too close to Hui bullshit.
It's not that bad.

There was a spirit, as yet largely unformed. The substance was there, but not the shape. She merely taught it a lesson from her Truth, and thereby gave it more complexity and personhood. It didn't have to accept the Lesson, but it did.

In one way of looking at things, she was teaching a child the way the world works.

That's a very long term goal for which we'd need a staggering amount of political capital and goodwill, considering current ES is based on anti-Hui sentiment.

We could pitch it as stealing it from them? It's been purged and it's wounded but it's still theirs: take it from them.

I feel like the xin had a similar approach as a plan b to rehabilitate the image of moon spirits once Ling joined Cai and all her personal tutoring of us went to waste*. There was that burst of something the first time Qi was presented to court.

*Not actually wasted, since it did get her what she wanted eventually

Xin is from the peaks originally, right? The archivist of vice might be replacing one of the spirits that died with the hui.

Ha! No. Their ascensions are based on reinforcing/creating Imperial Institutions or conjuring additional resources to exploit.

The Empire predicates itself based on the power of the Central Authority. Should the center weaken or the Dynasty enter a period of Civil war (like with Shang Tsung) the Emerald Sea could feasibly detach itself quite successfully. The other Provinces and Dukes have historically had more skin in the Game of Thrones. Neither the Cai nor the Emerald Seas Clans have had much interest in the internecine conflicts of the wider empire (other than pretexts to settle their own grudges or trade).

I could see a future Cai saying fuck it and having the Emerald Sea secede from the Empire. This would be especially true if we better integrate the Cloud tribes, efficiently exploit the Wall's resources, and get backing from the Polar Nations.

Well the interesting thing is that despite the Duchess being The Way She Is About Hui, she seems to literally be what's keeping Palace Of One from being further corrupted by Hui Bullshit, as far as I read the visual metaphor that we saw.

This sets us on the path of Linq Qi becoming hideously good at punching up above her weight level. Consider that as she advances her communication based Way and studies the Polar Theocracy's techniques this kind of spiritual mantling will get easier and easier. And so will communicating with and convincing spirits.

Then realize that that means that the more powerful she is, the more efficiently she'll be able to leverage that power to mantle whichever spirit or cultivator seems most aligned with her intended course of actions. Carrying the General into battle could become just the first (memorable) step towards an ongoing pattern/technique/way of "Ling Qi is just the guidance/delivery system for more powerful beings that happen to share her aims"

And of course it's compatible with advanced insight we got from mantling the Heron General

"So… does that mean we have to cut this lady in directly?" Hanyi asked, piping up from beside Ling Qi. She held a chestnut in her hand, and inhaled. It withered and shrank in her grasp as the qi was ripped from the 'meat' of the nut directly.

Her junior sister didn't sound to pleased. "For now, I'm afraid, maybe when Hanyi matures you mature a little we can think about renegotiating."
She's answering Hanyi's question, not BQ's

I believe teaching is not done by implanting thoughts and desires that you want into your students.
Usually your students are already persons. Implanted thoughts have to compete with an endless ecosystem of ideas and emotions to survive, nevermind gaining prominence. Even a Sovereign finds it hard.

The snow was the potential to be a person, but as Ling Qi said last update, if it was a person already she'd have to commit a murder.

She just made sure it crystallized into someone like herself, which was easy to bribe. Of course she knows what an ice elemental like herself would want.

or cultivator seems most aligned with her intended course of actions
  • One person's desires cannot, alone make a home nor a family. (Community, Power, Want)
  • Trust arises from choice. Love arises from trust. There can be no perfect safety, save in death. For love or trust to exist, so must the chance of heartbreak and betrayal. (Courage, Choice, Expression)
It's a really good thing that we have these Advanced Insights, or else that'd be a really terrifying political force as LQ goes up in Realms huh
