I like the idea of having liminal/domain antlers made of mist, shadow, ice, and/or starlight, though if they do end up being physical antlers, I wouldn't mind, as long as they were made out of ice or something, since wood antlers would be kinda basic. We're the protagonist, not a single inch of us is allowed to be normal.
I also liked the idea of it being a thing that people see out of the corner of their eye, but when they look at her head-on, it was just branches or a weird rock formation that made it look like she had antlers, simply because of how fucky it would be for everyone.
I mean, if they're permanent and never shed, then they're horns. Even if they're branching and look like deer antlers, they're still horns because they're permanent.
If we end up getting horns at all, I pray it ends up being something LQ can easily hide and show at will and its not something extremely obvious to people's spiritual senses. Since so many people seem set on it.
Horns are necessary for even more extreme looming over other people.
In terms of ideas, I think eight pointed antlers would be cool - a point for each phase of the moon. Or maybe six, two for each of the moon aunties, divided by theme: Hidden, obscuring/uncovering; Grinning: stillness/motion; Dreaming: nightmare/dream.
Self-image is important for how a cultivator's body changes as they go through Green. Ling Qi was greatly influenced by Zeqing, who per Word of Yrsillar was at least three metres tall. And Qi is only G5. Plenty of space for growing even taller (though I don't expect her to become as tall as Zeqing).
Now add awesome antlers made of shadows and moonlight. Maximum looming potential, like the Winter Queen in WoW.
"Greetings, Sir Meng, I hope that you have settled in well. My apologies that I had no chance to welcome you properly."
She had made her way over to Meng Dan and his Uncle without hesitation. And given her greetings with a low bow. That he had rebuffed her tentative offer of a meeting was left unsaid, he was the social superior here, so a little deference was expected.
"This whole matter has been hasty. My nephew was able to convey your needs well enough while I worked to settle the ripples of that woman's little bout of swordplay," Meng Deming replied evenly. He looked down at her with a piercing gaze, and Ling Qi allowed his senses to sweep over her without resistance. In turn, she took a closer look at him.
…Serene was the word, quite frogsong and wind through the reeds, the chirping calls of crickets and mist under a moonlit sky. Unruffled and impenetrable, not dissimilar to the feeling Gu Xiulan's Mother had given her long ago. But the reeds did stir a little, there were ripples beneath the water, dark shapes that she could not make out.
She thought he was more ill tempered than he appeared at the moment.
"Sometimes the world does not allow for long contemplations," Ling Qi said, not straightening up fully. "I am most thankful for your intervention with the mountain though."
"It could have been done without me, in the new way, obliterating the spirits of this place and forcing them to grow in a new mold. It was the opportunity to avoid that as much as anything, for why I came here," Meng Deming said frankly.
"I do think this has shown promise so far, though, hasn't it Uncle? Lady Cai, Lady Ling, and Sir Gan have been quite deft," Meng Dan said quietly.
"Their efforts cannot be faulted," the older man said, folding his arms into his sleeves in front of him. "Seeking peace is the way, strife has its ways of testing and refining enlightenment, but too much and it becomes an imposition."
"There are enough ills and ails in the dreaming world without seeking them out. Flagellation does not bring us closer to truth," Ling Qi said, this time it wasn;t an imposition from Huisheng's memory, but instead seeking out a thread and pulling it.
Meng Dan raised his eyebrows, His Uncle, gave her a considering look. "A debated point, one with more nuance than a few words. But neither deprivation nor indulgence enhance the spirit. How much of this is memorization to impress me?"
"I have been seeking greater understanding of the Emerald Seas foundations," Ling Qi said. "I do not know that I believe the dreaming Way of the Pure One, but I am an honest student. One must be foolish indeed to build up without understanding the land under their feet."
Well she wondered if someone learned from a being like Huisheng could really be called an honest student, given his methods, but that was not really relevant here.
He considered her silently for a long moment, during which she remained eye contact, slowly straightening up.
"More than most who come up through new systems can say," he finally replied. He was unreadable unfortunately, neither his tone nor his aura gave her any clue as to his intent. "I wonder at you, with one hand you give leave for our secrets to be shared with these… old kin, on the other you would seize a vast swathe of the Cloud Men's land, land that cannot possibly be controlled by us, for centuries to come. Why?"
"Because I must do one, that people might accept the other. I must be a dutiful subject of the Empire if any are to listen to my words where they might conflict with that."
"There is a strain of thought among the Way, that the Cloud Men's comingling with beasts, marks them out as a lower rung of existence, creatures incapable of finding transcendence in this lifetime. You are the opposite. You think even the Wang's… adoption is too much."
"I have seen among the White Sky that the Cloud Men can keep their deals… if motivated enough. In the past, when they could come and go with impunity, why would they?" Ling Qi said carefully. "Even if they are only willing to treat because, as Lord Luo said, 'they are losing' that is still willingness."
"Fragile willingness. And unenlightened souls cry always for vengeance."
"It is so, but I believe the Emerald Seas will remain strong and united. The situation will not reverse in the foreseeable future, and tradition grows where repetition and habit carves furrows for it."
Meng Deming gave a small nod. "That clarifies your vision. A second subject then. What was the disturbance you rushed to oversee, and which riled the thrones dogs so?"
Ling Qi let her mind empty, putting nothing to the surface. "There is some external saboteur, attempting to harm these talks. It was taken care of."
With his cultivation he might be able to pry it from her mind, but it would be inexcusably rude, given that she would resist it. She didn't look away from his eyes.
"I see," he said, and the waters rippled, it was very faint. She couldn;t be sure if it was annoyance or something else. "I am pleased to have made your acquaintance. I must speak with Lord Luo now though. Nephew, you may remain."
"Thank you for speaking with me, Lord Meng," Ling Qi said, bowing again.
"Thank you Uncle," Meng Dan said as well, as the older man turned and left them.
"Not the most approachable man is he," Ling Qi said mildly, once he had gone far enough away for her to be confident in the many overlapping social screens.
"No, he is not. My Uncle is quite austere," Meng Dan said. "Still I think you did well."
"I'm glad you think so," Ling Qi said with a sigh.
"You managed as good an impression as you could," Meng Dan said soothingly. "And while even I find him difficult to read. Uncle did not seem too opposed to allowing guests in the observatory ground. So long as they are, ah… Sibiar? Was it?"
"That is the modern name of the tribe," Ling Qi said with a frown. "Ah, he accepts the tapestry and the ancestral connection, but takes a rather narrow view?"
"It seems to be the compromise position things have arrived at," Meng Dan said apologetically.
Of course it was. Well, something else to work on… or measure her ability to endure the backlash of. The White Sky did not seem to take tribal divides as seriously as the Empire did its clans, so they wouldn't be to pleased with such a condition, but she could probably still sell it?
"Well I am glad that the official position of the Meng clan, is accommodating," Ling Qi said.
"My you are getting quite good at that," Meng Dan chuckled. "Well, I suppose this whole affair is a grindstone for such skills."
"It is," Ling Qi agreed. She considered for a moment. "Meng Dan, may I ask you a favor?"
He raised an eyebrow. "Of course."
"Please, if you notice any irregularity at all with your Uncle, find a way to inform me," Ling Qi asked.
His ever present smile dimmed, and he considered her seriously. "That verges improper, Ling Qi. You understand what you are saying."
She was essentially asking him to inform on a member of his clan, in however small a way. "There is something… complicated afoot here, Meng Dan. Something that could still ruin this whole work."
He frowned, and remained silent for a long moment. She considered that she might have pushed too far. "...I see, Uncle is eccentric, but if he is showing troubles… I will inform you, Lady Ling."
"Thank you," She smiled in relief, one more set of eyes on the case, tangentially at least. Meng Dan stared a moment, then blinked, his expression resetting to an amused smile.
"Of course, I shall now forget this was ever spoken," he said loftily. "I believe Lady Cai wishes for your attention."
She observed for a moment longer, tilting her head. He broke eye contact before she did.
She turned away, smoothing her expression…. What in the world was she doing?
She shook her head, just a little to clear it. She almost suspected Sixiang to whisper and laugh with her, but she was alone in her thoughts.
"Meng Deming is satisfied with negotiations?" Cai Renxiang asked. The shorter girl did not turn to her as she approached, remaining standing over the table with her arms folded behind her back. Her eyes were trained on the map, the tentative lines drawn on it, pins marking points of interest.
"He is not unsatisfied," Ling Qi said. "He also laid out the Meng Position on the observatory. Scholars of Sibiar descent only."
Cai Renxiang wrinkled her nose in annoyance. It only lasted a second before smoothing away. "Understood. If you determine that we need to press on them over it, inform me."
"I don't think it should be a problem," Ling Qi said. "I expect our guests to be baffled more than offended."
"Good," Cai Renxiang said. Taking a deep breath. "We must address the claims of the Sun before we finish today."
Ling Qi closed her eyes, trying very hard not to let her head ache. "Yes. I was able to talk them down to a more reasonable start position, but I do fear my own claim may have emboldened Princess Sun, whatever I established with Ji Rong."
"A calculated risk," Cai Renxiang said.
"Ultimately, I do not believe the Sun truly want much in the mountains, given the vast resources poured into the mining sites," Ling Qi said.
"Gan Guangli's contacts with the Jia and Diao confirm the majority of Sun and Jin resources are being placed into the construction of a grand port in the north," Cai Renxiang replied.
"Then its just a matter of how difficult the Princess wants to be," Ling Qi said.
"We will not be able to truly claim most of what we have painted ours," Cai Renxiang said. "There is no reason for the Sun to not want the same."
Ling Qi grimaced. It was true.
"And while they are not directly involved the Sun deciding to advance on the South, past agreed upon bounds would…."
"Degrade relations," Cai Renxiang said, mildly.
"Lady Cai enjoys her understatement," Ling Qi observed.
Renxiang merely glanced at her and hummed. "This is a minor focus for the Sun. If they choose to be difficult, it will be in the future, well into it."
"If Lady Cai is correct, than holding hard to the lines I spoke with Ji Rong about. Nothing in Freyja's Pass, claims radiating out a hundred kilometers or so from their mining sites, along with the Vales here and here for fort construction… I don't believe it will give them cause to be openly insulted."
"However, the Twisted Pines has more claims on their peaks, there will be some disgruntlement, if your reports are correct," Cai Renxiang replied.
"I might peel the Sun back a little more," Ling Qi grimaced. "But at that point we risk them ignoring us."
"And giving any further will attrition the gains you have so masterfully made here today," Cai Renxiang sighed. "We must…"
[ ] Be generous with the Sun (-1 WS, and PT Favorability. Sun highly satisfied, will not make trouble for the foreseeable future.)
[ ] Be fair with the Sun (-1 WS Favorability w/ chance to reduce. Sun grumbling but satisfied enough.)
[ ] Push back against the Sun (+1 WS Favorability. Sun on the edge of insult, more likely to make trouble.)
Base 10%+60%+5% ToN Favorability= 75% Base.
Emerald Seas Nobility: 8 (+2 Ducal Support, +2 Personal accomplishments, +1 Historical Proofs, +1 Expansionist Interests Catered, +2 High Land Claims, +1 Tech Sharing -1 Incomplete Hall)
White Plumes: 3 (+1 Satisfactory security, +1 Heron General's Patience, +1 High Land Claims)
We don't really want to deal with the Sun blowing things up, and intra-imperial politics do matter to us. Being able to be seen as a reasonable broker is valuable.
At the same time, they're not our friends and we have zero reason to be going out to bat for them, especially with those penalties.
[ ] Be fair with the Sun (-1 WS Favorability w/ chance to reduce. Sun grumbling but satisfied enough.)
Well, we already more or less hashed this out with them - not only is it an acceptable set of conditions which lowers risk either way, but it lets us avoid doubling back on previous statements and potentially getting ourselves into a bind.
Easiest and most sensible route, imo, is Ling Qi's domain weapon. It's currently some kind of flute-dagger thing(it's been morphing shape some), but it was crafted from a chunk of solid darkness we fished out of Huisheng's pool, which he's vaguely referred to as his 'blood'. He managed to involuntarily yank it out of Ling Qi's dantian too, once.
Point is, our domain weapon is linked to Huisheng/is reflective of our initial (inadvertent) introduction to him. And Huisheng has horns, while also being representative of a number of Ling Qi's meditations on the history of the Emerald Seas, while also being a teacher contributing to the tools and philosophies carrying Ling Qi forward into the future she wishes to build.
Having the domain weapon's form change to a pair of solid shadow Weilu horns on her head would be fun and cute. It's not like she really stabs anyone with it these days; it's for empowering mists, etc.. It'd also be something that isn't out/obvious most of the time, only being revealed intentionally or when she's in full-serious fight mode. That element of at least temporary secrecy makes it all the more fun to play around with in the narrative, imo.
Edit: we also have additional huisheng gunk in a head meridian already, and I could easily see him pulling a "prank" in terms of nudging our domain weapon's continued evolution, shape-wise. There's a lot of material to work with there, basically.
Yeah, I feel being fair is the way to go here. At the end of the day, this is a tiny portion of the Sun's border, and a relatively minor element of focus for them. Making sure they get their desired clay secure and a modest buffer without tripping over anyone else without screwing them over is already showing them a great amount of face for being a relatively minor player.
If they wanted a bigger investment, they needed to invest early, instead of only really getting started right at the cusp of the Summit.
"Thank you," She smiled in relief, one more set of eyes on the case, tangentially at least. Meng Dan stared a moment, then blinked, his expression resetting to an amused smile.
Even just being fair here gives Liling massive face, as that would also mean she got a diplomatic win by essentially doing nothing, which she'll know she owes to Rong.
So this is a hit to the White Sky we can afford to eat, especially since weve got such massive gains with the ES Nobility. It's actually remarkable that their level of satisfaction up to this point is so high.
I agree. Middle ground seems the way to go.
[ ] Be fair with the Sun (-1 WS Favorability w/ chance to reduce. Sun grumbling but satisfied enough.)
With omake points the mitigation chance goes to 95%, so we would just hope we aren't really unlucky.
In any case, emboldening the Sun is an unexpected consequence of picking the High Imperial Claims. I still think it was the right option though, even leaving favor changes aside. The Moderate option was also the "discuss this again in 300 years" option, except then we wouldn't have a convinient war making people reticent of just taking more terrain by force.
Luckily, this is where our +1 bond with Ji Rong comes in handy. I don't think that "grumbling" will translate to the Sun causing actual problems, just the games of provocation and purposeful annoyance that Liling has been pulling out since she arrived.
Good thing we didn't pick the option of letting the Ducal representatives talk with the WS on their own.

Yrsillar is doing a fantastic work with the foreshadowing. Making him just suspicious enough to hint he might be the saboteur mastermind or not.
I still think he is, but it could go either way.
The important part is the official Meng posture for sharing the observatory. We know that is one of the points that Jaromilla is going to press us more on, so it's also one of the best chances to gain WS favor.
That's a curious condition, implying that only those with blood ties can be trusted. Khadne may be satisfied, as it would improve her tribe's standing in the WS. And if the others trust in her schoolars capacities and that they will share their fandings with the WS at large, they shouldn't care too much? As Ling Qi said, baffled instead of offended.
Still, I still think we should try to push for a bit more collaboration on that front, as long as the White Plume and MoI cost isn't too great. We'll have to wait to see the options
