Now, onto the vote!!! I love that Elder Ying gives us extra XP for Protection. I'm not sure what is the best starting point for the concept though.
[ ] The purpose of protection is to preserve Choice, both your own and of those you shield.
[ ] The purpose of protection is to preserve your World, to maintain the community, the things and people you have.
First of all, I'm loving the use of the word preserve here. It reminds me of the visit to Xiangmen's temple.
"Thank you, sir," Ling Qi said. "May I ask what this tree represents?"
Hou Wen offered a small smile. "Each temple holds a different tree in its inner garden, a paragon of that species cultivated over many centuries. Xiangmen preserves. Even if the world is brought again to ruin, the Emerald Seas may be born anew."
"It would be no good if things couldn't grow again," Gui pondered aloud. "I guess its not the little buds fault when the really bad times come."
"Just so," agreed Hou Wen, looking at her little brother out of the corner of his eye. "Preservation assures new growth."
"Things can't be preserved forever. Destruction comes," Zhen said haughtily.
"It does, and so we endure," Hou Wen said pleasantly. "Good day, young Lady, young sir."
"You should be more polite," Ling Qi whispered harshly as the man left them, frowning at her little brother.
"It isn't good to coddle," Zhen defended. "Things will get stagnant and weak."
"Preservation does not bring stagnation," Gan Guangli rumbled. "It is not weak or wrong to defend those who have not yet found their strength. Indeed, the world is most ugly when we believe that."
Ling Qi gave him a considering look.
Apart from that, I'm not sure how to best approach the vote. My first reaction was that the broader choice is the wrong one. If it's broad, then you have more to defend against until it becomes Us against Them, like Shao. World and Community are broad, but at the end of the day, they're tangible people. Choice, however, is broader. It's a whole concept and idea. Protecting it is much harder and thus makes it more reactive. As Elder Ying said, protection is, more often than not, reactive. But that's unlikely to happen since LQ's Way is already half-defined already.
Then I thought of LQ's current thoughts on Protection: it should always result in an advance or opportunity. Makes sense since she's so Motion oriented. If you keep protecting without any change, then you end up stagnating, like the Xia pre-Xia Ren. Both options work with that, so I'm not sure which is the best to pick.
Another angle to look at it well, LQ's personality and current thoughts. Ling Qi originally started cultivating to gain enough power to protect her friends and family. So it can touch on that core part of her, Home, and Community. It makes sense for the concept to start from that place and grow from there. However, LQ has grown so much since then, and she currently wants to bring people together. That means they must have Choice. So it'll touch on recent story beats from the tribulation, and it makes even more sense for it to start from where she currently is, and grow from there, instead of from the very beginning.
After that, I thought of the TRF insight.
Branches and trunks bend and sway, but the roots must remain unyielding. Retreat only so far and then no more. (Persistence, Courage, Growth)
TRF's insight doesn't have a Protection keyword, but it kinda fits IMO. You can cede points and all, but you must have things which you do not give up on, things you must preserve and protect. But it runs into the same problem as the previous analysis frameworks. Her family and Choice are two things Ling Qi will not give up on. So one isn't inherently better.
Then I remembered that we're getting all of this from MoSS and Raising the Bastion.
Raising the Bastion: In the harsh south, under the gaze of Bleak Skies yearning, you received a taste of the casual cruelty which spirits unbound and uncaring of man may display. In the lessons of the Bastion's Melody, you find the lessons needed to mitigate their harm, and even bring understanding of their doings to spirits most inhuman. Alters the Bastion's Melody Art, negating the passively harmful traits of greater spirits on allies, and reducing their impact where they cannot be negated. +1 XP Community and Protection projects. +1 to the Spirit Seeker Trait. Unlocks one project. (0/5)
I feel like the option for Community and World better connects with the overall action, of learning to mitigate harm to others. It'll also be easier to lead into the thoughts that give Community XP But the one for Choice might fit better with the upgrade to our Spirit Seeker trait, since it's connected to Communication. When you are overpowered and you have no choice, there is Communication, and all that jazz. So yet again, both are good.
Taking all of that in mind, I can't decide (@_@). Both are good. There are trade-offs, but they both relate to LQ in varying, but similar ways. And this is the beginning of the concept too. It will continue to grow from here, as
@AbeoLogos said.
