Threads Of Destiny(Eastern Fantasy, Sequel to Forge of Destiny)

Voted best in category in the Users' Choice awards.
The real prize, and one that isn't lost on failure (unless it's real bad) is the resolution to make the effort in the first place.

So besides the invetiable scrapes and bruises and soul flaying, I wonder what other pain we'll get hit by? We could possibly lose that fancy new diamond snare we got. Our dress could get some kind of significant rip or tear in it. Or our flute could shatter again!

Losing our dream exploring implements, or them getting damaged and in need of repair, is possible too, but we don't really have a line on recovering from that and we've got a lot of dream stuff on our plate, so that'd be pretty harsh. Just have us lose an arm or something else easy to recover from.

That's in contrast to the base rewards offered in the other vote option, pretty sure.
yes if 50 percent is success and with omake points it is 31. technically we rolled 37 didn't we?
ps. sorry just realised the math. nope we rolled 17

Humph.

The world these days. You try to kidnap one child, and suddenly the universe is conspiring against you!

Can't a girl do even a little bit of child stealing these days?

Oh god I hope this doesn't go too badly.

edit: Nat 1 would be... bad. But I'm not gonna lie to you here, ya'll know this stuff is my living now.

course that doesn't protect Su Ling

Oh, don't you dare! It's one thing if we don't get a sibling/spirit companion for Su Ling, but the roll doesn't call for such an outcome.
It will be fine as long as we get them out of there, even if they dissipate into dream and pass on.
It sucks that my omake point was kind of wasted, but I'm glad we can probably avoid a 4th grade catastrophe. I hope the 2nd grade failure isn't that bad.

Well I hope we still pull the kid out of there, even with our injuries. We will see how things shake out

It said additional rewards on success, so I expect we're probably not getting the kid spirit out ;_;
For me that implies some kind of reward when choosing the option. If the wording was reward on success, instead of additional reward on success I would agree with you. As it stands though the vote implies we get something even if we are injuried.

Okay, I'm kinda confused.

Do we role over or under?

Because it feels like it goes back and forth.
We need to roll over. Here, we were rolling a d100 (1-100) on a 50% chance of success, so the basic target number to hit was 51. However, we invested 8 omake points, at a ratio of 2 omake points = 5% better odds, and so our target number was 31. We got a 17.

Luckily, even though we failed, the omake points aren't wasted, because yrsillar uses a degrees of success/degrees of failure system rather than a binary. A 17 against a required roll of 51 would be much worse than a 17 against a required roll of 31.

Although disappointing for the little sister depending on how this failure goes, thinking on it I think this could be good narratively. I was thinking back on times when we took a real big loss and the one that really stuck out to me was the Bloody Moon trail, and Ling Qi's doubts as to her courage as a result. I think that this can be a real indication for how she's changed since then, almost a year on; Ling Qi did the right thing, trying to save an innocent at danger to herself with no expectation of personal gain, and failed. If she can maintain conviction in the face of the consequences that would be an excellent moment of character development.

Not to mention gaining an even greater personal hatred for the fox, finally being punished for high risk high reward play, and possibly if Su Ling is threatened or gets hurt that could also bring a different sort insight or conflict to her Way. We might be getting a tragedy here, but it could be a great moment.

I'm sure this adversity will build Ling Qi and Su Ling's character! Surely!

In other news, I can't wait for them to reminisce and laugh about this adventure while drinking tea over a nice fox fur rug.

Ok, I have a question.
If we had increased our Dreamwalker trait to G2, would we had gotten better odds at the roll?
Because if it is so, we should definitely do the The Dreaming Gala project next turn, despite Yrs "subtle" hints that he wants us to do Phantasmal Mastery next to have more resources when writing fighting scenes.
Of course, we could always do both, but if there are other more immediately useful skills we may not want to focus so heavely in dream abilities.

Edit: Nevermind, I forgot we are already doing Dreaming Gala this turn.
Though, the question remains about if we had done it the previous turn we had gotten better odds in this roll or not.

I know I might regret saying this after the next update drops, but I'm a little excited to fail lol. It feels like it's been a while since we've really failed at something. Not getting the ideal result? That's common enough, but actually failing has been rare.

The good thing about narrative quests is that failure isn't going to set us back forever. I am absolutely loving what this would do to Su Ling's beliefs. She's reaffirmed her beliefs, but much like everything about the Bloody Moon, that doesn't actually mean we succeed at saving what's in front of us.
