Hmm. Wife I think.

I wouldn't choose killer.
Have we seen PM Diao as a killer yet? I mean she puts the fear of death into LQ but have any chapters or side stories showed her reaping lives like Jiao or the heron general or like Shenhua's shadow monster disciple?

Though I don't doubt that PM Diao is performing her matriarch duties... I don't think we've seen her doing it. Like, momma Ling caring for the household and recruiting promising youngsters, or Lan Lan's mom, managing marriages and teaching her girls to play politics, or granny wang's grand vision for the future Wang metropolis.
Our meeting with Diao Hualing suggests that PM Diao is head of a house divided, which weakens her status as matriarch as well.

It's been implied that both being a lesbian and being a public side dish our frowned upon. However, PM Diao has blatantly and gratuitously appeared as Shenhua's wife. As far as what we've seen in the text, DL seems to be leaning furthest into wifey.

I feel this one the most. Its what she displays widely to the court. And she just talked about how being absolutely straightforward in your plays and motivations can give its own power. It's what I've associated with her *the most* out of all her other scenes and what I see overshadowing the other aspects. The most powerful loveless cultivator we've ever scene, carved out a hole in her way exclusively for her.

It is also entirely correct to say that Ling Qi hasn't seen her in either of those other roles, and we haven't yet either.

This does not sound like she's primarily a Matriarch to me. Going just by the description given at the end of the this update I'd almost guess she only functions as Matriarch because it's useful to Shenhua.
 
I missed these easy landslide votes. Probably makes it easier for Yrs too since he can get the chapter done earlier.
 
What do we see and what it means to us and her?

[ ] A Matriarch (Community +1 XP)

We see her as a Politician. She does what she does in order to lead, and she leads because she does what she does. Diao Linqin the Matriarch considers the interests of the Diao first, whether that is their grudges, freedom or power.
Diao Linqin the Matriarch is only a threat due to Ling Qi and Cai Renxiang's political positions, if they change, so will her position relative to theirs.

[ ] A Killer (Isolation +1 XP)

We see her as a Threat. It doesn't matter much what and why she does, she is powerful and deadly. She threw off the chains of the Hui to cut them down even as they grasped her closely. She is a threat that Ling Qi has no choice but to maneuver around without being pricked by the thorns.
But then in that light, every one of the high nobility cannot help but be a threat.

We see her for her Desire. She loves Shenhua and would burn a nation for her. Have burned a nation. The corpses lie beneath the garden, to fertilize the blossoming of love.
Ling Qi can empathize with this, she understands aligning yourself simply because thats where your loved ones are. Of slaying their enemies.


I think I'd favor Ling Qi seeing that point of similarity first and foremost.

She isn't really known as a matriarch, and while many cultivators are involved in killing that seems more of an incidental side of her rather than a primary focus imo.
