It was kind of some very Count level arrogance (and it's IC for the world that it would be so) that she didn't feel any need to "talk her grandson up". Nothing about great his cultivation is for his age, nothing about his special skills or how he's a master of formations or a great diplomat or an excellent leader or has an ass you could bounce a quarter off. He's a Meng; that's all you need to know, baby.

Yeah, if she says something like that and then sends an average cultivator, or even someone who isn't exceptional, she loses a lot of face at best, and severely insults the Cai at worst. She's vouched for him, if he doesn't perform she was either wrong or lying, and neither is a good look on a major figure in a major clan.

The important fact is that he comes with connections and would be self-sustaining as far as cultivation resources go, which being a Meng tells us. The rest he would need to prove to CRX to be worthwhile and attempting to talk him up to us is giving the brand new Baroness would be too much credit to her influence on the Ducal Heir.
The Meng expect their Scion to not screw this up, they're asking for the chance at investing before the IPO rather than wait for the full valuation because we have shown that CRX might not be unreasonable to the Meng faction's ideology of cautious if open-minded policies.
Plus, investing in CRX will get them an early contact by proxy to the Bai through Meizhen's friendship with CRX and Ling Qi.
There is a lot of potential for the Meng to profit on this deal of their Scion doesn't goofball his audition but he will be valuable to CRX and crew but not a true friend or confidante like Ling Qi can be.
So now we have a Xia adjutant and a probably a Meng young master (maybe heir?) with the diplomatic party.
The only thing i hope from these two are that they are from other sects, just to get intel on the tournament thing coming up some day.
