So cultivators are capable of gaining skills greater then anything a mortal can accomplish.

In Ling Qi's case her musical skills with a flute are greater then anything a normal musician can perform.

But is this objectively true or subjective given that music is an art that's quality is determined by the listener?

Like if Ling Qi performs her craft for an mortal human that hates flute music with a passion will her transcendent skill change their mind. Or does the mortal still hear musical garbage?
Ling Qi can play music for the deaf.
It conveys concepts and feelings even without a common language.

Her skill literally transcends mortal limits.

I know. I'm wondering if her skill overwrites people opinions on music.

That even the most die hard flute hating individual has to conclude that Ling Qi plays good music even when she just blew a few notes.

Can a sufficiently advanced cultivator beat a skill mortal chess play in two moves?

Can sufficiently advanced cultivator win a game of tix-tac-toe with a mortal that knows how to play the game?

Tic tac toe is a solved game. That means the skill cap for it has been achieved. So unless the cultivator cheats, he cannot.

Chess... as long as they know the rules, a violet may be able to crunch numbers better than our current computers, so probably?

Videogames would be interesting, as the input lag means that in some the reflex limit has been achieved. That would pose a similar problem with tic tac toe, although the cultivator could prolly outstrategy the opponent.

The actual sound of the flute is more a medium for her music to flow through, Ling Qi has long reached a level of understanding where physical sound is mere formality for her art.
Her music is able to convey thought, and emotion with such clarity that it can communicate complex ideas or practically transport the listener to a spectacular scene of beauty, say an idyllic countryside.
The music would also be beamed directly to their soul to tug at heartstrings too, it's safe to say if you're mortal and Ling Qi plays a song you will feel the intended emotions no matter what.
With a bit of knowledge of any individual mortal and some improv she could probably craft a custom piece that would appeal to them on a personal level, even if they hated the sound of flutes.
And indeed even on an a completely impersonal piece, even if they despised the sound of flutes for whatever reason, near anyone would have to admit that on a technical level there's nothing wrong with her playing, it's not so much overwriting their opinion of music so much as playing it inhumanly well though.

Cultivators might have higher standards.

Cultivators might have higher standards.
Makes me wonder about the effects of super human music appreciation skills. Or super human appreciation skills in general. Cultivators have much higher upper limits when it comes to luxury. A mortal can't tell the difference between yellow realm level bed and a prism realm level bed. For them both are the hight of their ability to appreciate comfort, but a prism will be able notice every flaw in the yellow realm level bed that are completely beyond that mortal's senses.

We might have something like that in our world if wine tasters are to be believed and not just bullshiting.

Edit: Of course on the other end their ability to be comfortable in trying situations should be equally as great. A prism should be able to meditate on a bed of thorns without discomfort.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be the in-universe optimum decision for talented members of younger clans to be pushed into production/buffing/R&D Ways, so that it creates a strong foundation for new generations to build off of?

EDIT: Assuming they know enough about the intricacies of cultivation to realize this is the best option.
A few major factors:
-It requires the clan founder to be of a compatible Way. New clan members have a low cost option by imitating the founder directly or else they'd have to spend a lot of resources or be really talented to branch out.
--Talented Production/Support cultivators get snapped up really fast, and likely get adopted or marry into an established clan.
---Observe the talented non-noble production types we've seen, Suyin and Su Ling have already been aggressively courted despite actively avoiding attention.
---Production types are expensive to supply, you'd need many warrior types to farm enough materials for them to work on, and good Formations/recipes are closely held secrets. This strongly incentivizes them to join existing families.
--Conversely, its much easier for a facepuncher to win a good fief by meritorious deed. Theres a lot of faces to punch. A production type would need to leverage their way into a good fief SOMEHOW.

-Noble clans are primarily obligated to protect and defend their territory. The Production specialist can fight perfectly well, but they need either consumables or time to set up passive defenses.

Net result is, what you observe is true on the medium turn.
This assumes the clan has enough combat types to fully handle spirits and spiritbeast on their territory. Also for a undeveloped barony hunting for beast cores should be fairly lucrative.

Secondly pushing some to cultivate a specific thing is likely to lead to heart demons, bottlenecks and other problems.
Instead one should encourage them and invest extra in those who are production focused.
Theres all kinds of soft incentive available. Like how the Bai are pretty big on Water and Darkness Counterattacks even though theres no rule against it, the culture is such that those pursuing Water and Darkness Counterattacks would find themselves with access to a great deal of resources and peer support, while anyone trying to be trusting and kind tends to be exploited.

Social attack, Intimidate.
Opponent concedes in round 1.

Interesting thought, Court of Dreams wouldn't have only held Dreamer spirits. CRX has extremely ridiculous social defenses constantly on based on reflecting, think somebody got some aid from the Twins? :0
Also, part of the White bottleneck is resources and a Court of Dreams pocket dimension full of high level spirits certainly would be a rich tribulation and confirmation of purpose for Shenhua. Erase the intricacies and nuances of the past traditions of sunlight and moonlight, this is pure light and rejects the flavors of any external meddlers.

So here's the theory: 1. Shenhua is a cultivator of her Self, and a weaver. We have seen Li Suyin's forbidden techniques twist flesh and organs, and we know Moon Sempai's family is a long line of dedicated healers (which is part of why he attunes so well to the surgical mercy of Bloody Crescent). It's not a stretch to assume that Shenhua is capable of using her body as a regent, especially since we know external cultivators tend to treat their bodies a bit less like what physics would require and more like spirit blobs.
2. Ratmen are corruption, and Shenhua is almost perfectly an antithesis to them. The ratmen are capable of using their bodies as regents, channeling qi through their meridians as if their meridians were the lines of a Formation and though they are killing themselves it has great transformative/summoning power. We have heard of at least one case in which this sacrifice led to the summoning of a corrupt spirit greater than the sum of it's parts.
3. Dreams are super-real. They exist on a metaphysical level over/above reality and are capable of changing it. The echo/dream of the White king of the forest was still a cyan or something, and he carved his lessons of life into us from well beyond the grave and even from beyond the grasp of traditional reality. If a dream of a white can be cyan and carve themselves into the soul of a real green cultivator, then that implies that dreams are somehow outside of normal reality while still being able to be real when enforced strongly enough.

Collected Theory: Shenhua has a desire to clean corruption up in Emerald Seas and stop the endless cycle of useless and unjust violence. She at some point has a negative encounter with the rats, and shifts her cultivation to not just be cleansing but literally purifying to counter these creatures of near-total impurity. Through her understanding of purifying the rats, she learns how to purify the impurities within herself and she quickly shoots up the cultivation path while shedding her humanity. While crusading against corruption in Emerald Seas, she would have bumped into dreamers at least a few times. The dens and retreats of the powerful away from reality likely drove her nuts.
Like ultra-opium dens, or extra-removed chateaux.
Her speed at the cultivation process would let her see the "cultivation dreams" often, and perhaps come to understand that those dreams are on the plane which is super-real. Decisions you make there trickle down into reality even at their earliest levels of power, and that's a clue.
We now have confirmation that Shenhua invaded the Dreamer's Court and tore it apart. This space was almost certainly a super-real dream full of high level spirits for the materials required (and insights/Sovereignty) for White. All of this can explain the speed at which she rose (the direct and manual self-expression and/or manipulation), the materials she required (the looted Dreamer's Court), but not the object spirits. So let me tell you how I think she does it.

The rats use their meridians as formation lines in a self-sacrificing power play right? And Dreams are super-real, requiring power to really carve themselves into reality. PLR uses dream-selves to distract and dodge attacks, shattering alternate-selves when those lines end in getting hit. I believe that Shenhua uses a similar alternate-self-splitting technique to direct a self to fold and weave themselves and their meridians into whatever object/spirit is desired and then Shenhua pulls that self from the dream and the result is a less powerful but still incredible spirit summoned using self-sacrificial techniques to make permanent what typically isn't. Using herself as a model and/or base would be incredibly effective in terms of weaving many varieties of objects into high quality spirits akin to self. The Sword Qi guy might literally become a sword, it's not impossible to think that Shenhua can weave selves into scarves if she chooses to do that to herself.

So basically what has happened is that Shenhua has cultivated Shenhua qi, and uses it to create simulacra of herself as if she was whatever object she sacrifices herself to create. Literally putting herself into her art. She can be aware of some of her shortcomings but she cannot be anything but herself. She could sacrifice herself and does but only in her dreams and in service of those dreams using the materials of the dreams of others. CRX outwardly appears to have very few dreams of her own because Shenhua purifies dreams into a more efficient and useful state for her, and I assume sometimes she eats them. Of course Liming is an abomination, it's likely some terrible attempt at a fusion of Shenhua's dreams for CRX and CRX's desires as an extension/heir of Shenhua. I'd love to know more about CRX's social defenses, when and how they were developed as well as what qi they use :0

other than Shenhua Qi, shenhua could also be a cultivator of Resolve/Will and it would fit everything I just said still. It would also make sense that the saber is an attempt to assist CRX in slicing through Liming's control/influence and reassert CRX's own desires by slicing through those dreams with cold logic and rationality. Not an admission of fault, but an understanding that this is probably better.

So, speaking of the Court of Dreams that Cai Shenhua seemed to have destroyed, I wonder if we will eventually be able to create a replacement for it. Something like the Court of Hidden Dreams that is meant to facilitate the change that Renxiang wants to implement in Emerald Seas. A court hidden from the view of most that involve Moon spirits to keep track of important information and problems that arise in the Emerald Seas so that measured responses can be implemented to fix the problems.

I feel that would be a really cool project that works with our relationship with the Moon and our growing spirit ken. It would also be immensely helpful for Renxiang in the long run.

Honestly it's either that or an idea to integrate the court/spirits even more into the common population. Create transparency for her rule. I don't know how it would be implemented or if it's better. But becoming a true mediation/unification element of spirit and human relations would be pretty damn cool. Like not just cultivators. Everyone

just need to loop CRX into the moon-auntie club. I already talked about how her reflective social defenses could be Twin blessed, we should talk to her about the Twins/halfmoon and perhaps the moons in general. GG is a philosopher and we're a grounded artist (ironic, since our "ground" is often dreams lol!), talking about spirits and their histories and stories sounds like fun! and it'll be philosophy adjacent, just coming from the practical side instead of the theoretical side
I want to know more about CRX as a human being, not just her social face. We gotta know her better to be able to best "be blunt n sincere" with her without like, tramplin on stuff she already knows.

also I'm still mad that LANLAN seems to be missing and we didn't get to say goodbye. >:[
if she comes back with ashen arts I'm gonna be mad at us for eating that knife. But also I'll clap because that's a good narrative consequence that is a repetition of our history with lanlan. When we don't invest enough time and faith and training in lanlan, she claws her way forward on her own and that's kinda spooky. We should train with her more often and work on team tactics. We're closer to being peers than we are with Meizhen, no reason not to have good training time with our precious firebrand.

Also also, still mad that her family totally doesn't understand her worries or core insecurities. She doesn't need to change so much as she needs to support the path she's choosing or she'll burn out. Self Care is the first step in taking care of the world around you >:[

this is a good story and I like the writing. I'm not mad about that <3 yayy
okay it's late. Goodnight <3

Maybe someone might be able to clear this for me. I just caught up on the royalroad version of the story. Where would I go to catch up on the rest? Back to the first thread? Just an Idea would be helpful really.

make sure to not miss out on the canonized stories (those under sidestory) since quite a bit of those werent added to the RR version probably due to yrsilar not having written most of them.

Yeah but reading through the posts on a quest to see why people voted the way they did is half the fun of a quest! (until your caught up anyway.)

Turn 7: Arc 3-7
Ling Qi really was beautiful, Sixiang mused.

Their hands materialized from the waters, and their body followed. It might have been the form grandmother had made, but it was theirs now. Straying too far from this template just didn't feel comfortable anymore. Was this what humans referred to as self image?

"Show me something slow? I need to think," Ling Qi said, taking their hands.

It was funny, so many of this girls human friends regarded her with mild exasperation. It wasn't unkind, but words like oblivious and air headed came up sometimes. Yet to Sixiang, she stood out in sharp relief, her colors were vibrant in a way that few were. To someone who had known only the misty realm of dreams, Ling Qi was a great contrast. She was easily distracted from some things true but her core drive was as sharp as a blade. When they looked upon her they saw a core of absolute black that greedily drank in everything it touched. It lay shrouded in mist and breeze, tinged with silver and colors beyond count. Cords of that blackness shot through the whole extending in a web that went beyond sight. One such cord was bound to them.

"Hm, not my style, but I guess I can think of something," Sixiang's avatar said with a lopsided grin. They didn't betray their thoughts. They had gotten good at that. Sixiang considered a moment, holding Ling Qi's hands. They knew a few court dances from fragments of old selves.

As Sixiang's avatar began to lead them through the first twirling steps, sending ripples through their dreamstuff, Ling Qi hummed to herself. "...What actually changed your mind Sixiang? I know I'm not that good of a speaker."

They were silent, their mind's eye flickering back through their own experience. Not just looking out through Ling Qi's eyes, but truly immersing themselves in that perspective. It had hammered home the truth of their differences. Through Ling Qi's eyes the real meaning of fear had been hammered home. Through Ling Qi's eyes, she had learned the truth of attachment. Their own feelings seemed truly insubstantial, and half formed. Through Ling Qi's eyes, she had learned that those things were two sides of the same coin. In the waking world, one came with the other.

It had shown her how wrong they were, to imagine that they had drifted far from their roots. They had taken a single step, and thought to run back to clutch grandmother's skirts. "Does it matter? I made up my mind." Their avatar said cheekily.

Ling Qi gave her an arch look as the steps of the dance took them apart, and replied as they came back together. The shore grew further away with each step. "It matters to me. Are you really alright?"

"I am," their avatar reassured her. "Really Ling Qi, I just… got some perspective is all."

Ling Qi gave them a suspicious look, but subsided. Sixiang was glad, they weren't sure they could put the truth of their realization into words that would not alarm her. They weren't afraid anymore because there was nothing to be afraid of. They weren't human, even if this incarnation ended, it wasn't their end. Even if Ling Qi…

Well it would hurt, but Sixiang would make sure that her song echoed through Dream afterward, that way it wouldn't be her end either. To think that cranky ice spirit had been more in touch with the truth of the world then they had. That was the benefit of age they supposed. They still came at it from different angles. If Zeqing had been [Endings] then their nature was [Impermanence].

No wonder their growth had stalled out.

Ling Qi was silent as they danced, and Sixiang considered their thoughts, still, peering closer at her, Sixiang rippled in amusement. "...Ling Qi, are you still cultivating?"

"I never stopped," Ling Qi huffed. "If you won't talk to me, even now, then I'll just need to figure you out some other way."

Sixiang made their avatar huff in exasperation as they wove through the dance, circling one another, their hands separate for now. "Your so pushy," they teased.

"I am when I need to be," Ling Qi replied primly, turning up her nose.

Sixiang snorted with laughter, the sound echoing from the waters all around. "Really Ling Qi, I found my perspective… and worked out what I valued more, can't you leave it at that?"

"I left things be the last time and look where it got us," Ling Qi replied, their dance was interrupted as the girl stepped forward to poke their avatar in the chest. "Just… talk to me before it gets bad next time, alright? I know I'm bad at noticing some things on my own… Talk to me," she pleaded, and the cord that bound them thrummed along with two others, the ones binding her other spirits.

Sixiang turned their avatars head down but the words they spoke came not from it's lips, but from all around. "...I promise," there was no reason to worry about Ling Qi tiring of them now, they would speak their mind more often and clearly in the future.

"Good," Ling Qi huffed, taking their avatar's hands back up as they began the dance again from the beginning. "Now I just need to figure out how to have the same conversation with Zhengui," she grumbled.

"Convincing the lil' big guy his Sis is fallible might take some doing," they teased, but Sixiang squeezed her hand anyway. Their words were at least half true.

"Tell me about it," Ling Qi sighed. "Well, lets set aside the heavy stuff for now. Do you think I've been cultivating the art your grandmother gave me wrong? Looking through your eyes… I feel like I've made a mistake somewhere."

Sixiang considered the threads of moonlight that Ling Qi had woven throughout her legs and lungs, turning them into channels of liquid silver. Before today, she would have said no, that Ling Qi was doing fine. However, they had realized how they had blinded themselves now, had seen the waking world as less malleable, more different than it was.

So Sixiang's avatar smiled mischievously, and before Ling Qi's eyes could do more than widen in alarm. They stepped.

Dead and withered leaves spun up in a miniature cyclone as the world rippled. Where one moment there had been a silently mediating girl seated upon a stone, there was now a pair of girls, dancing through the leaves.

Ling Qi's eyes widened as she glanced around, disoriented, and she almost stumbled as Sixiang released her hands.

Sixiang could not help but smile even as they dissolved back into moonlight and wind. Even if she understood the trick, manifesting was certainly rough.

Before she could dissolve wholly, Ling Qi met her eyes. "You are showing me how to do that," she said firmly.

"Of course," Sixiang laughed, once more at home in Ling Qi's mind. "Just make sure to clear your schedule."

Ling Qi felt lighter in the days that followed her time with Sixiang. She had solved the problem, even if she still wasn't wholly sure how, and her final planned cultivation for the month was much less stressful. The Roaming Moon's Eye technique was simply an extension of her introductory divination art, but she still cultivated it dutifully. She did not think it would ever be her focus, but she could admit that being able to get a wider view of the situation would help immensely in the future.

So, with that in mind, she worked hard to improve her clairvoyance technique.

So, she was hardly surprised when Gu Xiulan approached her at the stones. She had seen her coming after all. Still, the saddened expression on her face was worrying.

She would have to try and help her friend out, naturally.

The creator may see from the wisp's position as if they stood there themselves, though only in one direction at a time. This greatly increases their combat perception in the areas within which this sight overlaps.

Used in tandem with an damaging art, allows the users thoughts to far outspeed their limbs, greatly slowing their perception of the world, and allowing the user to pick out minute details that might otherwise be missed in the flows of an enemy or obstacles qi, and adjust the course of their blow. Through this the user ignores the effects of a single defensive technique of C rank or lower, or if none are active, penalizes the targets armor or avoid at the users discretion.

Initiate's Viewing Pool: B
[Non-Combat]
Requiring a surface of calm water at least two handspans wide, the user concentrates on a familiar person or place within ten kilometers of their current position. The user is able to view the person or location in clear detail with both sight and hearing with perception equivalent to their own base Perception. This viewing may be opposed by arts or talismans of various types, in which case the users combat perception is used to determine success. With sufficient surfaces, the use may view up to three targets with a single use of this technique.

Targets are not considered familiar until seen in person.

Illustrious Phantasmal Festival: B
Duration: Persistent
The foundational technique from which all others in the art arise. The user gathers their qi and the memories of their night of revelry and expels them through every available channel in a rush of power and gleaming many colored mist. Within Close range centered on the user, ghostly dancers ever shifting in form coalesce from the midst in a riot of color, laughter, music and movement.

The festival counts as an opponent for the purposes of determining multiattacker bonuses. The user is the master of the revel, the host and the creator in one. The revel may move with them or remain still at their volition. The user may freely move to any point within the confines of the revel instantly and without crossing the intervening distance, and is immune to any physical obstacle or barrier or constraint of a rank lower than A(Adjusted for potency). To move the revel, the user must move normally, or with another technique. While the revel is active the users Physical Avoid and Spiritual Avoid is increased by one half rank, this bonus also applies to up to five allies within the revel. Said allies receive a half rank increase to speed within the confines of the revel.
--Lunatic Whirl: B
Duration: Persistent
Activates automatically at no additional cost when Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is activated. The ghostly dancers gather around an intruder in the festival, laughing, singing and demanding a dance, forcing them to join the revelry. The dancers seize their arms and hands, dragging them through the chaotic revelry. Though the dancers will do no harm to their captive, the frenetic pace of the revelry is highly draining, and victim finds their qi dribbling away(D rank qi drain), siphoned to the user while the sights and sounds of the revel cloud their minds and steal the strength from their limbs. So long as their hands lie in the grasp of the dancers, they will also find the meridians in their arms blocked and unusable. Each usage of Lunatic Whirl may target up to 5 targets. The user may target a maximum of fifteen enemies of lower realm or five of equal realm (mixed groups are counted at a 3:1 ratio).

Joyous Toast: C
Duration: Immediate
Usable only while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active. The guests of the festival raise their voices and cups and stamp their feet in joy, roaring encouragement for the user and their allies and jeering at their foes. The next music, dance or art based technique used by those affected is treated as if it is one rank higher for determining effects.

Ephemeral Dreamlit Dancer: C
Duration: Short
Having begun to understand the nature of the dreams, the user flits from place to place, shrouded in the phantoms of paths not taken. While active the users speed is increased significantly. Techniques which would still hit the user have a 50% chance to simply fail (-15% for each rank of Combat Perception above the user's derived stealth) to simply fail, shattering instead some of the dreamlike phantom images the user is shrouded in. Each use of this technique generates three 'charges' which do not stack with additional uses. Each charge provides a small stacking boost to Physical Avoid.

If used while Illustrious Phantasmal Festival is active, the user may use this technique to pull others into the shallows of Dream. When the revel next relocates in material space, up to three targets in addition to the user move with it. Targets position within the space of the revel is unchanged, this movement ignores terrain and intervening space. Unwilling targets may resist this effect, but are disoriented and receive a penalty to Avoid and Perception until their next action. The technique must be activated again each time the user wishes to move other targets. Doing this in quick succession is taxing upon a user of the third realm, and so the techniques cost increases by one rank after the second use of this variant, and one additional rank after the fourth.

    Chaos Phase: B
Drawing on the chaotic nature of the dreaming moon to easily slip through the base bonds of ordered qi, Sixiang may dispel up to two negative effects on themselves or their binder.

    Laughing Moonlit Maiden: D
    Instant
Channeling through their bond with their binder, Sixiang may grant Ling Qi an air of amiable approachability, and make her words seem both more fair and agreeable. Grants Ling Qi Sixiang's passive bonuses to persuade and socialize challenges for a Short time.

    Phantasmal Revel's Regrets: C
Releasing a pulse of chaotic qi into the environment at Close range to Ling Qi, Sixiang disrupts the flows and constructs of their foes. Soaking their meridians in qi designed to emulate the fogging effects of heavy inebriation, she causes their control of their techniques to slip. Attempts to dispel a single effect on up to five enemies within range.

    Lunatic Stirring B
    Duration: Short
With dream qi thick in the air, the rules of the waking realm begins to blur. Creates a distorted realm in a Near radius to Ling Qi in which the muse may manifest for a time. Enemies within the field receive a half rank down debuff to one of Physical Hit, Physical Penetration, Physical Avoid, Physical Armor or Speed, at Sixiang's discretion which may change each time they take an action. Allows Sixiang to use techniques which require manifestation. While manifested, SIxiang acts as if they have physical cultivation one rank lower than their spiritual cultivation, and physical statistics equivalent to their mental counterparts at one rank down. While manifested Sixiang remains impervious to entirely physical damage.

    Cheerful Muse's Accompaniment: C
When Ling Qi activates a non damaging music or wind art, if Sixiang has not already acted that turn, they may activate this technique and enhance one parameter of the art significantly. Valid parameters are Hit, Effect, Duration, or Resist.

    Whirlwind Revel C
    Duration: Short
Usable while manifested. Song, wind and lunatic abandon washes out all else as Sixiang focuses their attention on a single enemy in melee range of their manifestation. Using their derived Dance Skill, Sixiang draws the enemy further still into the shallows of Dream. If successful the target becomes unable to move in the physical world and may only target Sixiang with any attack or technique. Area of Effect skills may still hit multiple targets however, although their potency is reduced by one rank if physical. Similarly, any physical effect affecting the trapped target is reduced by one rank in effect. The targets own physical attributes are also penalized greatly.

On failure the target is merely impeded by the dreamlike mealstrom while they remain in range, receiving a penalty to Combat Perception, Physical Avoid, and Physical Hit.
  • F
    +20 to Sixiang's Spiritual Avoid
When attempting to Dispel, if Sixiang fails to dispel an effect the targets Resist is penalized by 5, this effect stacks up to 5 times. Stacks are removed upon a successful dispel.

AN: Alright we're almost at the end guys. The endless turn will soon reach it's conclusion!

Now this is an interesting bit.
Some religions describe reality as a dream. Might there be a bit of truth to that in here?
