The Dawi in Arda (Hiatus)

Once we have finished the north wall I want to start on a hold entrance into the east peak, if we build the hold entrance and fortify it first then it wont leave an unfortified way into our hold. Then we can build the farmers and brewers halls in there, connect it up to the main holdk and add fully pimped milling and brewing halls.
I thought we wanted to only have one entrance to the hold for defensive purposes? Why not just have a hallway as we have for the western peak?

That's never been my stance, I want entrances in north east and west at the very least. 1 Entrance means it is easier for enemies to cut off access to the hold allowing them to cut our forces in half and defeat us in detail. More entrances also force enemies to commit forces to each of them or get sallied into from behind. Also it's just plain more practical for us to be able to enter and leave through whatever peak entrance we need to, I want to put the farmers in the east and they won't want to have to walk all the way through the hold, similarly the carpenters with the west.

A hold with only one entrance is a deathtrap, not a fortress. Actual defensive structures should have multiple entrances and exits, so that in the event of a siege supplies can still be smuggled in, messengers/scouts can be smuggled out, and so that evacuations or reinforcements can take place.

Is there any chance I can convince you to go for making a trade deal with a maritime power with potential access to stuff from across Arda in Mithlond?

We're gonna need sulphur eventually and it will take years to be able to safely afford a proper expedition with appropriate preparations to Nogrod and Belegost.

I suppose we could always go back to Plan A which is just a matter of regular brute force in making a Migdhal near Angmar's volcano but…

I'm not opposed in principle but I am a little worried about the Ironplough's approval which we already put off addressing for a turn.

FYI you should specify a location for this, either the west peak or under the valley.

An extra source of meat would allow us to hold more feasts too. More feasts for more approval overall would be more ideal. Worst case scenario I would certainly not oppose assuaging them next turn.

We should be able to prospect for Sulphur, most mined Sulphur does not come from volcanoes. If the dawi know about mining they should know about salt domes and sulfate ores.

Ok as long as no-one complains about it I'll put Gartrimm heading over to discuss trade while Daungrumm stays home to try and get the Ironploughs on board.
High risk (insofar as risk of failure) high reward so to speak, huh? I'd advise against that when we have a -5 malus on Gartrimm's actions but I'll take it.

Does The Old Forest vote involve sending somebody to Fangorn? because that sounds very very dangerous for a Dwarf.
Why would it? The Old Forest is in Eriador.

I like that the engineers are making defenses but I also like getting one step closer to powder.

[X][Nendumir] No
[X][Grazur] The Old Forest
[X][Daungrumm] Yes
[X][Hagrim] Build a Barrow (Uses 1 Beardling Die)

I put brackets on these so it's easier to sort using the tally program. If folk put brackets on the word "Plan" for future votes then the tally results can be tabbed by topic.

I'd prefer word of @Warkeymon on whether the Dawi have accessed sulphur veins absent volcanoes in their history before committing to it, as much as one can commit to such. Certainly we do not control or influence what the prospectors find barring them rolling more than once. Our sniffers sulphur find was a single load.

In any event sulphur for trade instead of mining imposes no maluses on our miner dice.

Dawi Prospectors are aware that Sulphur can be found in non-volcanic environments. They happen not to have found any yet while Sulphur has been found more readily at volcanoes.

I'm curious what others think of trade deals in the future with the Istari given the unique potential opportunities.
The Istari are but a single person usually. One man can hardly feed a whole Kazad or fill it's coffers. Trading with them is more like trading with Elrond or Glorfindel solo. Trinket for a trinket but nothing on a larger scale. Not worth the effort of a whole Karak.

Does that mean we should look for salt? Or is a salt dome special thing?

Salt Domes are somewhat special. But we can get Sulphur from smelting Sulfide Ores too.

Sulphur is one of the most common elements on earth.

"The largest accumulations of mineral sulfur are found in the subsurface. Many of these are in fractures and cavities associated with sulfide ore mineralization. The largest are associated with evaporite minerals, where gypsum and anhydrite yield native sulfur as a product of bacterial action. Significant amounts of sulfur have been produced from the cap rock of Salt Domes but this type of production is rarely done today."

Here is a distribution map to more or less show which geological areas would have Salt Domes in the USA.

Yes. Grimnir will eventually declare their shame expunged and allow them to gain their Doom. But they'll not return to a Karak in the meantime.
Really, is that more because there's only one Karak and it's not exactly on the front lines then because it's forbidden, because I've seen Slayers in non-Kadrin Karaks?

I'm basically asking at your take on Dawi culture in regards to Slayer in Karaks.

Slayers may not take shelter from the enemies of the Dawi and the first purpose of a Karak to the Dawi is to shelter the Dawi.

There's an exception for Karaks that are anticipating an attack or are mustering a Throng.

Makes sense. Fingers crossed they continue East into northern Mirkwood.

What is fear of the undying Umaiar to fear of shaming oneself before Grimnir?

Edit:…wonder what would happen if our Runelord inscribed the Rune of Fate on the peak where our Shrine of Grimnir rests?
