I'm starting to just get really annoyed at this. We've been doing great this whole time, and you keep on worrying about fucking death spirals.

We're doing fine and things are fine.

Anxiety isn't rational! I'm just really nervous because we're basically throwing all of our eggs in one basket here and a disaster here could be devastating.

I just hope this works out.

Alectai, don't worry. If things get bad we can always just spend all three actions making ships and get 18 Aries Secundus Class Corvettes, which should be enough to turn away any ordinary incursion.

We've got plenty of breathing room.

We are doing fine, but I wouldn't say that things are fine, we have huge true Imperium just a 2 systems over, Neo is using Tzeench corrupted astropaths for communication and we have faith action timebomb apparently, not to mention the problem all governments since later half of XIX century i.e. healthcare.

I genuinely hope that all faith actions and/or all development gives us permanent additional action (although I think that all faith will likely boost our chaos immunity)

We've already been told we will never, ever get a fourth permanent action, only fourth actions from milestones.

This so-called huge true Imperium is a dangerous foe, and more powerful than us, but also comically inefficient to a startling degree, and we're doing fine on Healthcare... I mean, we've committed or at least I have to adding one point of Medical Infrastructure a turn until we're at V, but even "Med Infra Null" is considerably better than the Imperium manages. :V

So next turn we upping medical industry, doing a faith action and a military action?

Honestly, I have no idea. We'll have to see what happens here.

Like, if we bag the Slaughter in enough condition to reverse engineer the engine, I would absolutely prioritize rushing that even above medical, because Chaos has bent over backwards to keep that out of everyone else's hands, and if it would require actions to get the Component, we want to make it impossible for some Daemon to just vworp in and ruin all the samples and diagrams.

Of course, if that's just basically automatic because we're just expanding our library outwards with some samples, then amazing. I know I'd love it if we learn enough about making cheap Lances that we can make at least light-medium Lance weapons no longer penalized by our Doctrine. Chaos loves their Lances, and they have to have something going for them to have so many of them despite being generally on the backfoot logistically compared to the Imperium.

I'm actually kinda hoping that given Neon has "bought" our Space Marine Fig Leaf (Thanks, Lamenters. Have we ever thanked you enough?) that relations with Neon will warm up to at least a Cold War Neutral with them so we can pivot to building up again and Dealing With our Pirate Problem on our flanks.

I still think it wasn't worth choosing [Faith] Monuments for Martyrs, Graves for the Forgotten. as our extra action

Eh, sometimes we fuck up, that can't be helped. It's still good to get it out of the way.

I am entirely willing to accept an extended cease-fire backed by the Lamenters so we can get a moment to breathe, yeah. We literally couldn't push an invasion further than we had if we wanted to. We need at least a century before we can go on the offensive again.

Give me a century to build up and I am completely confident we could take Neon in a fair fight.

would need a decent amount of Aries and Libra's, and potentially the brawler cruiser we have been talking about.

i do however would like to have a super carrier just be able to be sent to force project enough star-fighters to *LAUGH* at a entire enemy fleet due to the amount of fighters, fighter-bombers, and actual bombers they could send and have enough leftover to ruin other peoples lives. sure it would be fragile as heck compared to over ships its size, and would need a way to procure supplies and replacement parts, but it would be a immense use against most foes...and be a very scary thing to face. (carrier groups would do wonders for fucking over enemy small fleets)

I only hope that this is like, the one Nova Cannon equipped ship they've got. A single one of these fuckers can just delete a large chunk of our forces. Mechanically, I'm pretty sure Nova Cannons deal double damage to anything lighter weight than a Light Cruiser (And they already did concerningly high amounts of damage to begin with), and Ordnance in the AoE just dies without a save, which includes strike craft.

Frankly, the only Imperial ship lighter than a Battlecruiser that mounts a Nova Cannon 'Stock' is the Dominator. But the Mechanicus upgrades apparently let them swap the torps on the Gothic out with one. Or--god forbid--they've got Torps and a Nova Cannon.

  • [X] Yes, but (Write-In)
--[X] Those Slaughter-class Cruisers are supposed to have good engines, right? (Try to capture that, a reasonably intact sample that can be sanctified would be absolutely worth our time here, and it's not like the Imperials will want something like this. Call it a trophy if you want. We are the ones with Space Marines being brought to the table here.)
--[X] Any slaves we can liberate are probably best in our hands too, it's not like the Imperium will care. The point is, we're here to Kill Chaos, not to get some clay, anything beyond that is bonus. Loot anything that Chaos brought with them that they haven't nailed down, burn anything that can't be sanctified, and have the rest to study or otherwise put to work on a Righteous Cause.
--[X] Finally, remember Outsider Policy. Remember that the balance of power changes once Chaos is on the back foot, be ready to withdraw at a moment's notice. There's nothing forcing them to stick to the deal except their own honor after all. Cooperation is all fine and dandy today against a greater threat, but trust needs to be earned. Don't commit anything that can't be pulled out quickly if the winds and the rains shift.

412.M42 - And Then The Nova Cannon Fired
Chanting Throats.
Clattering Dice.
Candles Flickering.
Insence Wafting.
Slaves Screaming.
Guts Squirming.
Pacts Called.

And the cackling face of a bird unfurled a single, gnarled, twisting finger of multi-colored sinew upon crystallized bones unto two signatures of the system.

A finger dripping with blood splitting to show the Gothic Cruiser.
A finger drinking the spilled blood pointed at the 'Litany of Damnation.'

With that, the course was clear, the ritual done, the veil began to try and feebly close itself again, and the fleets raced against each other.

Glimmering Stars burned to make contact.
Fools Bound To Bones twisted upon perfectly calculated paths into positions.
Chanting Insanity crescendoed upon a flickering smile of Nurgle passing across their path for a fraction of a moment.

And then the Nova Cannon fired.

Ancient machinery whirred, its Machine Spirit roused to action by the chanting of the Magi, and the blessed oils smeared across its frame seeped deeply into wounded microscopic fractures brought about by false use mended themselves by way of arcane mechanism and the wonders of forgotten technologies stirring awake once again.

A shell slowly trundled across paths long since locked by the slumbering machine once constructed to automatically move the shells instead of the teams of servitors made from the blessed volunteers and the venerated gunnery crew Martyrs pulling them against the straining locks by way of chains and muscle augmented by metal and electoo humm.

Sights were prepared as arcane glyphs danced across the Noosphere, the entire ship halting in its function, even the beating heart of its whole being halting its breath as if to not disturb the momentous occasion about to happen.

The shell locked within the cannon, energy and data transferred from each into the other...and a hum built up.

A hum that made the Cult of the Trinity of Sensation and Sight spew even more plasma behind its frames, ships pulling ahead of each other with the Slaughter burning brightest of them all...

Until the Nova Cannon fired.

It was off target by seventeen kilometers.

And eleven Chaos Frigates were ripped apart all the same, their now smelted hulls screaming with naught but the hateful roars of its slain crew and the gleeful cackling of the freed slaves 'ere both were ripped apart by the Warp and the feeding frenzy of its denizens circling this battle.

It was a slaughter. On both sides.

The Neonites pounced with all the power of the victors, all the majesty of a brute, and all the viciousness of those who would never even entertain the thought of being less than utterly ruthless against their foes. Torpedoes, lances, and macro-cannons flashed and fired, titanic plumes of energy and physical force blooming on every scintillating shield whenever a round hit or when a protective bubble popped, two Chaos destroyers meeting their doom at the end of a prow ram and engines roused beyond the red and a barrage of torpedoes smashing apart a vessel occupied with dodging another set of these titanic missiles.

Yet, in return, while the swarms of fighters and bombers of the Glimmering Federation raced with the Crux, Lantern-Bearers, Risen Dirges, and Aries-Secundi to make contact with the enemy, one frigate and one Light Cruiser found themselves at the mercy of the 'Litany of Damnation,' its cruel weaponry gouging deep furrows in their plates before its mighty prow ripped apart the first and allowed its ailing fleet rushing behind the mighty ship to devour the latter wholesale, the plasma reactor exploding in a scintillating hue of merry murder, a shiver of glee running down the back of the Daemonette chained aboard the Slaughter, giggling at the momentary glance of one of its master's fragments of attention.

And then the Glimmerlings joined in the fray.

+++Something is not correct.+++ Thule-1113 thought, her electronic eyes sweeping across the breath of void she could grasp, sensor data flowing through her mind as it was methodically picked apart and disassembled with ease brought by decades of training and service.

+++PN-LC/04 is turning weapons to us.+++ Came the warning of Thule-2345, her sister-sibling barely more than a whelp with only four years of service but already one that showed great promise of turning into an exemplar of their lines.

+++NP Case A//?+++ Thule-2001 asked, keeping their bomber steady on its approach to the Chaos Destroyer C-D/11; the smattering of fire shot their way swiftly dodged with minimal adjustments or simply tanked thanks to their armor.

+++Negative, they-+++ A transmission went through the vox, and for a moment, all heard the voice of an unfamiliar woman calling for the execution of the traitors that had taken control of PN-LC/04 and for its crew to re-take the ship by all means possible. Unfortunately for her, the Proof now under fire by its lances, was not willing to become its punching bag for niceties and returned a withering storm of fire just as its sibling turned its weaponry to C-D/7 and C-D/9, both lighting up under the intense weight of munitions expended upon their shields...until they popped. Six flights took advantage, and soon fighters and bombers racked the ships with munitions, secondary explosions following from within, no hull meant to take the beating dished out by their fellow sister-siblings.

But the Federation was not to come out of this unscathed. The lone Lupus of their formation extended just too far to accompany the racing squadrons of Lantern-Bearers making for the Slaughter. Shot after shot struck true, and missiles honed unerringly into its frame until its shields burst with a shimmer of energy.

And the turn-coat Light Cruiser struck it down moments before it was destroyed itself.

The Lantern-Beares thundered with the cadence of its weaponry, boarding-shots peppering the 'Litany of Damnation' under the giggling glee of a Daemonette moments before its head was pulped by an enraged Skythe Shadowmourn's Warhammer, rage boiling through his armor and pounding in his skull as he beheld the fleet fraying before his eyes, only one command upon his lips as he turned to rage against the invaders of his ship. "FULL SPEED AT THE GOTHIC! NOW KILL THOSE CORPSE-WORSHIPPERS; I'LL BE DAMNED BEFORE I'LL LET THEM TAKE MY SHIP!"

An approving roar came from the cultists and brothers on the bridge, as well as the entire ship now filled with the bloodlust of the soon-to-be dead.

Only Amadel Bryarwound did not cheer. Instead, light began to flicker on his fingers as he stealthily traced runes within the air.

He was not willing to die for this fool, and these...Glimmerings were far too fascinating to leave unattended.

'After all,' he thought, triggering the pre-placed ritual charges in another system and letting himself be pulled through the Warp, his armor changing from the Red, Black, and Brass of the Red Corsairs into the Blue, Silver, and Green of his true allegiance. 'For the Emperor,' he finished, the portal blinking out.

"BURN! KILL! MA-" *CRCK-SQUELCH*

"SHUT THE FUCK UP!" Chyron roared with utter fury, pulping the Chaos Marine with one hand as the other fired the twin-linked autocannons into the flood of fodder advancing mindlessly against his position. His body already slick with blood, it made no difference then that another few dozen humans worth got splattered upon the coat of still-wet sanguine fluid already present. "ALL TEAMS, PRESS HARDER!" He shouted over the vox, stomping forward with a single-minded obsession to utterly crush all these traitors to humanity and his Chapter to repay the debt they had incurred with a terrible vengeance.

"BU-" *CRACK*

Another of these fools died in his hand, his skull pulverized, and his horned helmet turned into so much scrap metal. Several seconds of auto-cannon fire into his body stopped the twitching tentacles and hateful eyes seeking to emerge from the pile of viscera and gore before they could do more than die.

"LET NONE LIVE! FOR THOSE WE CHERISH!" He bellowed, charging further into the ship's bowels, fury nearly overtaking him, only held back by the single-minded hatred of those he stood against and his duty to his Chapter.

There is a simple calculation to be done when one ship tries to ram another.

Mass times Velocity times Structural Integrity minus Structural Integrity times Mass.

In short, you needed to be heavier, sturdier, and faster than whatever you wanted to ram.

The 'Litany of Damnation' sure was faster, but it was not heavier and barely sturdier than the Gothic-Class it sought to snap across its bow.

The two ships met.

Metal struck metal.

The roar of pounding blood reverberated within the first...

And the Gothic snapped...revealing a crippled Slaughter in the middle of the Neonite fleet, twenty-one ships turning their attention around to deliver swift judgment upon the one who just decapitated their leadership.

It died. There is nothing else to add to an end as swift and final as that.

Only that the Lamenters upon the ship barely managed to flee with some numbers intact, their demands to cease firing unheard until only a third emerged from the Slaughter to return and tell the tale, their ire now roused against those who would kill them when the ship had almost been within their grasp.

They should thank the God-Emperor that Chapter Master Chyron barely escaped the final explosion of the corrupted ship; otherwise, they would have attacked to the last.

But, for now, an uneasy peace would reign.

Two fleets, one moderately damaged, the other unsuited to the kind of brawling that could emerge immediately should some fool twitch the wrong way, floated...

And both began to retreat away from each other to lick their wounds.

Only two questions remained now.

Loot? Or Planet?
(6-Hour Moratorium)
[] Loot!
(You will try to nab as many hulls (and loose pieces of equipment) as you can, making you look suspicious as all fucking hell while also delaying any aid to the people on Gathin Major under siege by Chaos forces. Also, see if you can't grab that Nova Cannon when the Neonites aren't looking...)

[] Planet!
(There is no reason to dawdle; you already have ships thanks to the Lamenters, and there is nothing but corrupted metals and machines to be gained here. Aid the people who still need it.)

Losses:
1x Lupus-Class Torpedo Destroyer

Gains:

(Lamenters Only)
5x Destroyers (3x Infidels, 1x Idolator, 1x Unknown Design)
1x Light Cruiser (1x Unknown Design)

Those FUCKERS!

God damnit Neon, God Damnit! Even in victory you fuck it all up!

[] Planet!

Rassinfrassing cost us the god damn Slaughter and its engine coils, god damnit.

So, starting to see why Chaos is really dangerous to fight for most people.

The very instant you engage them, they're constantly rolling Corruption checks. Except, uh, we're immune to that shit. So we maintained full cohesion while the Imperial fleet was just having to deal with regular mutinies and rebellions from people who saw the poop and went PRAISE CHAOS all of a sudden.

Still, absurdly fucking annoying that we almost lost Chyron and Did lose the god damn Slaughter-class salvage thanks to their fuckfuck games. But at least the Deal will not likely be Altered any time soon given the Imperial losses here, while we got off mostly unscathed, and we'll probably be able to get away with pushing the letter of the Agreement a bit more thanks to them losing NOVACANNONNOVACANNONNOVACANNON.

God damnit, Novacannon is busted as shit.
