Ship of Fools: A Taylor Varga Omake (Complete)

Some people don't wear socks to bed? How do they keep their feet warm? :???::wtf:

With a blanket. Duh.

Only time I'll wear socks to bed are when visiting my dad (cats are messy, and cat litter on bare feet is disgusting) or if I'm too exhausted to bother. Heck, oft times I don't even bother putting on socks unless it's winter time or I'm going outside. And even then I may opt to wear flip flops or just put on a pair of Lego slippers while taking the trash out or checking the mail in the summer.

There're some people that can't even wear pajamas when they want to sleep, because the fabric feels confining. And people with diabetes and some heart issues aren't supposed to wear socks when sleeping because it cuts off too much circulation, and then bad things happen. Like emergency amputations, blood clots, gangrene, etc. Then there are naturally warm people that don't need socks to be warm.
...
I feel, somewhere, we've strayed off topic. :p

But my feet get cold even when the rest of me is warm. That's not true of everyone? Or is this thread just full of freaks?

I feel sorry for those people with medical conditions that won't let them wear socks in bed. Freezing feet forever....

That part disappearing has repercussions. What with summer and winter balanced etc.
...So...this string of things, moving the Mantle of the Winter Knight about through various realities, could be a potential divergence point causing the creation of the 'verse(s) that include ASoIaF/GoT? Or, in an only slightly lower fantasy setting, Hoth in Star Wars?

One thing I learned in all seriousness is that if your extremities are cold, that's a sign that your core is not warm enough. That's hard to manage during sleep, though, because you can overheat under blankets...especially if you're somewhere where the external temperature shifts dramatically.

I'm afraid I'm still not clear how canon-ish Taylor is hanging on to her shard through all these world jumps... Did her abductor/rescuer move her shard to somewhere that travels with her? If this's the case, then The Varga will likely smell a rat...

Well, Cauldron jumps between multiple realities, yet their shards manage to keep in contact with their hosts. I honestly have no idea how it works, as I am not a giant alien space worm...OR AM I? Ahem...no, I am not. The entities in worm, unlike Ziz, don't seem to be into trolling people online.

What are the usual bullshit theories used to support crossover fics?

1) Each person caries the signature of their universe with them, and cross-dimensional powers home in on that like a beacon. It's like superpower OnStar.
2) Shards are smart enough to do whatever is necessary to stay in contact with a host like a well-trained service animal...which would be ironic if your power is to detect when people are in need of medical assistance.
3) Shard connections are dimensionally/phase/magically/superscience/wished into passing across dimensional boundaries like they aren't there. Reality-ism doesn't exist for a shard -- they don't see dimensional boundaries.
4) A lizard did it.
5) When shards are hosted, they move into a set of pocket dimensions that stay in proximity to the host, and use quantum entanglement/magic/the power of positive thinking to stay in touch with the Evil Worm Network (EWN).

The real reason is that without super powers, Taylor Hebert is just a depressed girl who was bullied a lot, which may be a perfectly viable story (or After School Special), but it isn't the story I want to tell.

FYI, I've made a small update to the last chapter:

"So you know about all of that?" said Taylor. "You know about how he kidnapped Dinah Alcott?"

"We managed to stop him from doing that," explained Saurial. "Dinah's a Ward now in our world."

"With Shadow Stalker?" said Taylor, wondering what happened to her nemesis. In her world, Sophia Hess had outed herself accidentally during an incident in a shopping mall. The revelation had made Taylor even less trusting of the Protectorate, while the kidnapping had alienated her from the Undersiders, leaving her alone and without support from either the heroes or the villains. Then Leviathan had shown up.

Saurial shook her head. "No, Shadow Stalker had all of her extracurricular activities exposed. Dad actually rigged me with a camera, and got evidence of it all. She was under house arrest, but she escaped during the take-down of Coil and is on the run. I guarantee you that she will get a very unpleasant welcome if she chooses to come back, especially if she threatens any of our friends and family." Saurial was showing teeth again, and not in a friendly way.

So...definitely non-canon paths for the alt-Taylor in this story. The whole ABB arc must have been slightly different for the Leviathan fight to go the way it did.

The real reason is that without super powers, Taylor Hebert is just a depressed girl who was bullied a lot...

Without super powers, Taylor Hebert is the one who took down Lung in Denial. And all the 'good guys' in that world, from the PRT to Cauldron itself, believes she has an unbelievable Trump rating when she's nothing more than a teenager. It. Is. Hilarious.

There was also Internship and all it's sequels where an unpowered Taylor starts as an intern in the PRT and works her way up the chain while helping the world be slightly less shitty.

As to how the power connects to the person, the power itself is a giant living crystaline fleshyblob the size of an island to the size of a continent on a dimensional analog of Earth that has no humans on it. And it somehow has an extradimensional transmitter that links from that shard to the parahuman's Corona Pollentia and Gemma. The shard stays on whatever planet it has landed on and gains power from... well, probably solar and geothermal energy... something like that... to actually power the parahuman's ability.

At no time in Worm did anyone with parahuman powers lose connectivity with their power, even when teleporting or dimension hopping. Some fanfictions discuss and debate losing the powers if they get outside of the 10^81 realities that Zion had dimensionally sectioned off somehow. But that is firmly the realm of non canon now, and basically down to the desires of the new author.

I love the True Deputy Facts meme on PHO from that series.

True Deputy Fact: On the first day of her internship, the Deputy made coffee. On her second day, she got bored with that, so she busted up an international arms smuggling ring.

True Deputy Fact: The Deputy's taser is named Mjolnir, after the weapon of a Norse god. It was named this so that enemies would underestimate its power.

True Deputy Fact: It is suspected that here was a fourth Endbringer, but that it manifested as the Deputy instead. (The best part of this one is that Dragon gave Aisha, who posted it, an infraction for speculating about the true identity of a hero, LOL.)

Edit: Another fun bit about Mjolnir -- the taser is tinker tech, made by Kid Win in a tinker fugue. When it was actually referenced in a news story, the PHO reaction was, "Holy shit, Mjolnir's real?"

Eh, at home it's not a problem. My matress is long enough that my feet don't hang over the end. Thus they are never exposed to the cold. At my dad's though the futon I sleep on is a little short for me. So I form a pocket at the foot of the bed to keep my feet warm despite hanging over the edge. And if one blanket isn't enough, I add another blanket or two. They're kind of thin and better used in the summer, but stacked together they are fairly warm. If that too isn't enough, I pull out my electric blanket. I've only had to pull that sucker out once. And that was cause even with the thermostat being set to 90 degrees, it was dropping down to 50 degrees or lower in my apartment during the week we had with arctic temperatures.

My feet don't hang over the end, either, but I've been having to do the pocket thing. Get a layer of blanket under my feet.

Before my liver transplant, I was getting chills, so I had an electric blanket. I haven't needed it for quite some time, though.

I will agree with others on something. If your hands and feet are getting cold, there's likely deeper problems then just that. It's just that your hands and feet are the first sign of those deeper problems.

I was thinking when Harry comes back to his reality, his canon will be derailed, because Summer got the upper hand in his absence (missing Winter mantle). However that would play out given that the real Winter's army are holding the Gates.

I'd agree with most of that, except a non-cape Taylor being harmless...

The reason I raised this is because of the crossover with another Worm-verse. Taylor visiting is effectively another Entity intruding into the Cycle locally running. If you look at Mauling Snarks, then the Mauling Canon side-story deals with some of this. The cross-over between Taylor Varga and Mauling Snarks, the Unusual Travel Techniques one (which is a cross-over with Mauling Canon, which is a cross-over of Mauling Snarks with canon Worm...) is particularly relevant as it has Metis (Lisa), even with improved snark/shard connections, nearly losing her link because of going so far in such a strange (cross-multiverse) 'direction'.

Yes, shards are normally connecting to a cape in a different world, but it is a 'close' one, on another alternate Earth. Even if the cape moves between those Earths then they'll stay in range. Going out of range can happen, if a cape goes beyond about Lunar orbit then canon Worm has them lose their shard connection.

Shards are big things, with extensions into (nearby) dimensions, and drawing on the energy resources of another dimensional Earth. Yes, you can make them portable, or, you could amplify/extend their communication capability. Ensuring they still have a good power supply, and likely somewhere big to dump excess heat into, would be wise. Both moving the shard and improving its comms have implications - how important is canon Taylor's shard QA, and will there be issues if she goes missing? She is an important shard of the Warrior, Scion/Zion. If the comms have improved to beyond the Entity-locked dimensional Earths then that may also attract attention from other shards, or the Warrior, in Taylor's home Worm-verse. Implies a much bigger multiverse, with room for Entity expansion.

Obviously Taylor still has her insect-multitasking powers in SoF, but, awkward people (like me :) ) will be interested in knowing what's up with the other half of the cape-shard pair. :)

So, while the answer is 'an author did it', what the author did is of interest! :)

I've some doubts as to whether you've got massive interest in places for the Ship of Fools to visit, but...

I'd like to see them meet Old Stoney Face/Judge Joe Dredd himself, though, I'd suggest somewhere he isn't on his home ground of Mega City One. The official cross-over between him and Batman was fun... No, I'm not recommending a meet with the Stallone version, but the 2000AD comic one.

Both Skitter and Dredd tend to be on the 'do not mess with' list of anyone with an ounce of sense...

Taylor watched as her alternate waved, smiling. She waved back, also smiling, and feeling rather satisfied. The other girl turned around and went on her way, stopping when a familiar man came around the corner in front of her, then running towards him.

Satisfied, Taylor closed the wormhole and turned to her friends. "That's the last of them."

"Things seem to have gone well, I feel," the Varga commented, looking pleased.

"Yep. It was an interesting experience."

"I think they also thought that," Lisa laughed. "Poor Daniel. He was looking very confused there at the end."

"Not as much as Xander's friends were," Amy giggled, shaking her head. "That was hilarious."

"You really shouldn't do things like that," Kevin said, although when they looked at him he was visibly suppressing a grin. "We know from the historical documents that Slayers are jumpy."

"Historical documents," Randall snickered. "Hey, we need to go find those guys some day, it would be a lot of fun."

"Might be worth a try," Taylor nodded thoughtfully. "But we have a lot of other things to do before that." She glanced at Dragon, who was listening with amusement apparent, although most people wouldn't have been able to tell. "You're sure the comm units are working?"

"Remote diagnostics show in the green for everyone, Saurial," the AI nodded calmly. "With the power reserves they have and the EDM construction, those things will last for centuries. Don't worry, if they need us, they can get us."

"Good. I like them, and Taylor is family in a way. Her world is pretty shitty even compared to this one." The local form of Taylor Hebert, currently a six and a half foot reptilian creature, sighed a little. "We should probably do something about that. We know a lot of things they don't, after all."

"We still aren't clear on everything, though, so it's probably best not to jump right in just yet," the Varga, as Raptaur at the moment, commented. "We can surreptitiously go and warn off the Endbringers, though, they seem to listen if we grin at them for a while."

"You mean they run and hide, then pretend they're not there," Randall said with a smirk. The demon smirked back.

"Apparently so. It seems to work."

"Fair enough."

"I wonder if we'll hear from Ellen again?" Amy mused, looking around at them all. "She said herself that she didn't have much in her own world to keep her there and I think she's considering the idea of going somewhere else when things settle down."

Lisa shrugged a little. "I wouldn't be surprised. The woman is wasted where she is. But she can call any time and get a lift somewhere, and she knows it. We'll just have to wait and see."

They all looked at each other for a moment. "One thing left to do, I suppose."

"You're certain you can do it?" Dragon seemed worried. "It sounds perilously close to time travel in the dangerous way, after all, and you've told me enough about that to make me a little concerned." She turned to the Varga, who smiled.

"It's slightly tricky, but it's also not too dangerous, Dragon. We're not traveling in time within a universe, we're merely connecting to another one at a different time than our 'now.' Yes, it is in some ways splitting hairs, but there's enough wiggle room in how Reality operates that it can be done safely, if you are able to calculate precisely how to go about it. Admittedly, I am unaware of anyone else who can, and even for us it's a significant amount of work, but we owe it to the girl. If only because she is, as Saurial said, Family."

The AI Tinker nodded slowly, then followed them as they went to do some extremely complex math.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

"That's it." Taylor leaned back on her tail, looking with satisfaction at half a dozen boards full of equations, then the final results on the last one. "Those are the correct coordinates based on our examination of Taylor, this is the temporal skew required, and this is the area we need to deal with." She pointed at one set of numbers. "And that part should give enough energy to keep things ticking along pretty much forever."

"Impressive," Randall remarked, scanning the boards. "I'm also almost able to follow it this time."

"That's better than I can manage," Dragon said, shaking her head slowly. "Some of these equations, while internally consistent, are otherwise entirely nonsensical according to everything I thought I knew. If it wasn't for the fact that they demonstrably work I wouldn't think it was possible. Fascinating."

"Vista could understand a lot of this," Taylor smiled, snickering at the way the AI's suit head snapped around. "She's good at multi-dimensional math."

As Dragon apparently decided she wasn't going to ask, but clearly wanted to, 'Saurial' turned to 'Metis' and asked, "You agree with the conclusion?"

"I'm not as good at Family math as you are, but yes, the end result holds up as far as I can see," her friend nodded. "Like Randall said. Impressive."

"It should do the job," the Varga said approvingly. "And I can see some useful applications in future. We may as well proceed unless anyone has an objection?"

He looked around. No one seemed to. "In that case, we have some interestingly complex work to do."

"Vectura will be annoyed she missed it," Kevin said.

"She had that other thing to do," Randall replied. "Which should be enough excitement for her for now. I'm kind of envious, actually."

His friend grinned. "Me too. But this is cool as well."

"True enough."

As Taylor and her demon began the delicate operation, all their friends watched carefully and made suggestions when required.

In the end, it worked perfectly.

"Excellent. I am very pleased with the result." 'Raptaur' nodded and smiled. "I can see some other places we may require this same technique too."

"I'll put it on the list," Amy snickered.

They turned everything off after that and went to lunch, secure in the knowledge of a job well done and many other universes mightily puzzled.

Which was, after all, their main goal in life…

Another option for what's happening with "semi-cannon" Taylor's powers if the author doesn't want to go with MPπ's omake is to have her old shard treat her as suddenly dead since it lost the connect to her, and then have her automatically connect to the QA of the TV universe when arriving there. That would probably cause TVQA to be rather confused about suddenly having a connection, and would lead to oddities when she returns to her universe, but I could see it opening for some story options. As far as I know we haven't really seen QA in TV? Though I could be forgetting something. A further problem with this would be that Taylor still had enough of her power left to sense Spider-man when they first met, so it's probably easiest to just canonise MPπ's omake.
