I'm mostly just laughing that everyone has convinced themselves that the technique that's not meant for dodging is going to be better at letting us dodge than the technique specifically meant for the purpose of making us better at dodging.

If Dancing Between Raindrops lets us go full Touhou, I'll change my mind.
...Given that at several points in that video, the bullets are the background, I don't think going full Touhou is possible in the Naruto universe. I mean, we could try to drive Naruto to be the harbinger of projectile hell via Shadow Clones, but outside of that I don't think there's anyone in the Naruto universe able to go Touhou on the attack.

Dude, we quite literally have the example of Shunshin no Shisui who died less than five years ago.
This isn't conjecture, it's Hisana's family history.

Shunshin allows us to dodge, to attack and to retreat, to carry other people out of range of danger, but it costs a little chakra. It's an all-round boost to our capabilities.
Dodging Btw Raindrops costs no chakra, allows us to dodge single attacks, but has no defense against AoE. Much more limited, but is free.

And I will remind you that in the manga?
The Fourth Raikage combined Shunshin and Lightning Release Chakra Mode to dodge Amaterasu.

You know with all this talk about Shisui it is plausible the reason Hisana was spared is that she is his half sister, and the explanation in this AU for why he was never able to gather any support among the Uchiha despite being so widely respected by them. Admittedly only two points of evidence for this is that Hisana's mother was always away on missions in other words a similar work ethic as Shisui, and the fact that she is Sasuke's cousin.

... My god. I dunno if it's true, but if it is, Itachi's reaction sounds hilarious, in a dark humor sort of way.

[x] It should be easy enough to occupy his attention for a short while. This will be safer to the hostages, but harder on you.
[x] Shushin mastery. This trait allows the user far greater control over the Shushin, making it a viable move in combat. Specifically, straight lines are no longer a limiting factor.

If we can comprehend enough to fight effectively at such speeds we should also be able to dodge quite a bit

And you make my point for me by literally arguing that the multipurpose technique will be better at dodging than the dodging-specific technique is!

It slices! It dices! It juliennes! It's the SHUNSHIN!

If we're fighting, say, Konan, who we can't kill in a single strike, and she goes full Bullet Hell with her paper so that we have to dodge over and over again... We can afford to dodge about 250 times, if we use no extra chakra on anything. Summon help? Whoops, suddenly we've got 100 dodges. Use our ninjutsu? Blam, only 50 dodges left.... Then 10... And then we get to the point where we can't dodge any more, because we used up all our Chakra.
First problem: you're comparing a B-rank combatant against an S-rank combatant.
Second problem: you've decided we're using a shitty defense against our opponent to begin with. Paper is flammable, and wind fucks over physical projectiles.
Third problem: your example ignores things like "summons also have chakra they can spend to defend us".
Fourth problem: why the fuck are you focusing on dodging to the point of excluding ending the need to dodge in your scenario?

I can't help but think that the application with 1/50th the chakra cost has around 1/50th the durability. Shunshin is still my choice due to it's general utility, but I don't think we can say that the temporary barrier solves our squishiness - it almost certainly can't handle the high-end bullshit we face.
I'd say the application of the same seal that costs 1/50th the chakra is probably something like 1/50th the size, actually. Partially because that's kind of explicit, and there's no implication of a difference in durability.

I'm mostly just laughing that everyone has convinced themselves that the technique that's not meant for dodging is going to be better at letting us dodge than the technique specifically meant for the purpose of making us better at dodging.
... I'm not sure where you're getting people saying it's better at dodging than the one meant for dodging. I'm only seeing arguments that it's a better fit for what we're doing. And that improving our offense and maneuverability in addition to our defense is better than just improving our defense.

Tenten, though she has a glaring weakness to heavy winds. Like we can generate pretty easily.
And... Really, anyone who can quickly pull large numbers of projectiles out somehow (like from storage scrolls) could do the same.

We don't actually know that.

You really shouldn't read so heavily into someone saying that the Shunshin is better at a specific application of dodging. Saying I'm better at geometry than you isn't the same as saying I'm better at math than you.

The perk that costs chakra to use HAS to be better/have wider application than the free technique in order to be at all viable as a choice.
Else why would it be a choice?

Now I want to write about "Itachi's Lousy No Good Rotten Day".
Poor kid has been having a rotten day since he was 13 or so.

I'm more amused at the prospect of Danzo's reaction.
After all, Shisui got away after Danzo stole one of his eyes, and he doesn't actually know what Shisui was doing between his escape and his ending up in the river minus his other eye.

The fact that Hisana awoke the Sharingan is amazing enough.
The fact that she picks up a perk very much in Shisui's vein is enough to make the superstitious twitchy.
We don't actually know that.
It does imply it; hence the name.
Else it would be something like Dancing with The Hurricane or some such.

@Tekomandor By hostages do you mean the two grass 'genin' Karin has prisoner or some possible hostages that are with Gaara right now?
I'm not sure why I wrote hostages, but yes.
@Tekomandor, what options do Karin and Hiroyuki offer? Also, are Hiroyuki's mushroom minions more like puppets or summons (i.e. are they in some way people, or are they unthinking fodder)?

My thought on this is to mix shadow clones, illusory clones, and the mushroom minions with genjutsu on Kankuro and Temari (probably Tree-binding Death) to fake a frontal assault while we slip around. The clones not looking like us is preferred.
Hiroyuki's mushroom dudes are more like clones - they're not people.

I've just got up after going to sleep right after posting 4.6, will answer more questions as I read through.

Anyway, the three options are basically improvements of balanced Offence/Defence, Offence only, or Defence only. Shunshin mastery isn't as good at dodging as Dance Between Raindrops, or as good at making you hit stuff better as A Singular Cut but is balanced between the two.

WoG on Dance between Raindrops being better at 'Dodge!'

I'm sticking with my vote there.

If the hostages are the imprisoned grass 'genin', who gives a crap about them?

Though I suppose Hiroyuki's unconscious teammate would be put in greater danger as well.

That line really implies more that Shisui is our father, which, while not what you meant...
would be impossible, and only make the Naruto timeline even more disjointed.

Why would it?
Hisana was 8 in-universe the night when Shisui died, and the Uchiha massacre happened less than six months later.
No way he'd have anything to do with her paternity.

What they'd wonder is if he used his Mangy Eye to do something to her; teach her something, implant memories et cetera.
It's not even far-fetched; it's something Sharingans have been able to do, and we know Minato and Kushina did something similar by sealing away their chakra inside Naruto when they died.

I really like the jiraiya is her father theory tbh.
I don't.
In this village, I doubt Jiraiya would have missed it anyway.
Sincerely hope it's like some random carpenter/musician/scholar somewhere; no need for genetic destiny here.
Ah, yes, of course. Shisui used Kotoamatsukami on us with the command "git gud, scrub". It all makes sense, now. :V
You're laughing now, but that might have actually worked:V

... My god. I dunno if it's true, but if it is, Itachi's reaction sounds hilarious, in a dark humor sort of way.
Although now this has me wondering whether the reason Orochimaru liked Hisana how she currently was because she has the EMS with Shisui's eyes, which makes his reaction the equivalent of a "This is gonna be good" gif.:V

Karin needs them alive to pass the second exam, and use the third one as a stage to loudly denounce her "home" for how they've treated her despite the nice diplomatic facade they're noted to have.

Also they're ANBU black ops of another village so they'd know more than a few secrets of their home village. For Hisana it increases the odds that individuals who might have valuable intel on other villages survive.
