Renascence: A Homura Quest

[X] Do nothing.
-[X] Cheer Sayaka on, win or lose. If she's upset, mention that the girl she helped doesn't care that she lost.
-[X] Congratulate Kyouko when she wins. Tell her that you were impressed by how seriously she played (disguised guilt trip intended).

edit: If there's a good option to befriend Kyouko, I'd take it, but I'm not seeing how any of the current options lead from here to there. Arguments could sway me though.

Also I meant to describe a few pages back my reaction to SAO being a crossover element: enthusiastic cheering combined with "aww shit those poor suckers". :( Hope we see more of it, or wishes stemming from it, in the future.

"I wish my onii-chan came back!"

And then a thousand poor suckers were left in Aincrad and Suguha won the Kiritobowl.

On other news, Sachi lived and Klein got a harem.

Having slept on it, I'm not certain the disguised guilt trip should be kept or not.

Possible results:
- she doesn't realize or doesn't feel guilty at all. We could then lead in to a civilian introduction, but Kyouko is the type who prefers honesty.
- she feels guilty but doesn't realize we intended it. Might lead Kyouko to a better friendship with Sayaka or a magicless rematch
- she realizes we intended it or she is unapologetic about feeling guilty. 'It's only fair that I play using everything I have' or similar. Would be a good lead-in for challenging her with magic.

[X]Enchant Sayaka

[X]Try to befriend Kyouko
-[X]As a magical girl.

I really don't see the harm in trying to help Sayaka win. If she doesn't know there's something strange about Homura already, she's an idiot... And she's not an idiot. She's already carrying around Excalibur or whatever, for serious.

As far as Kyouko goes, helping a friend will impress her even if she pretends otherwise, and helping Sayaka is less of a direct challenge to her.

More than that, I just think this will be more interesting and fun than watching her cream Sayaka.

We can probably get the same effect if/when we introduce ourselves as a magical girl, by telling her we're here in Mitikihara "to protect a friend". You're right that it won't really harm anything though, unless helping Sayaka is perceived as a social sneak attack. I'm more worried about avoiding breaking character for Sayaka than revealing magic to her, but supporting her wouldn't really do that either.

Ok, Kyouko did serious trashtalking of the other girl after Kyouko won, to the point the girl was almost in tears. That was the reason the fight started. Sayaka stepped in to defend the other girl. We can thus conclude that if Sayaka loses, Kyouko will continue the trash talking, on top of berating Sayaka for being all goody-goody. This will not end well. I don't want to see an Excalibur vs Magical Girl fight in the arcade (perhaps a -slight- exaggeration :) ).

Homura doing the next challenge, I just don't see. Homura can MG herself up, but she has absolutely 0 skill in this. Even with the stat bonus, I very much doubt she'd win. Would also put a major strain on her heart enchantment that I wouldn't like, either. Also, I think it would break Mikimom's SoD if she sees the little girl who just had heart surgery going superhuman on DDR. Finally, would not be good for Sayaka's self-image.

So I'd go for enchanting Sayaka to help her out. It's not cheating if it's just balancing an unfair advantage Kyouko's using. After that point, it's pure skill vs skill.

Question for @Higure: Would our using enchantment on Sayaka be noticeable to Kyouko? Is it something blatant enough that she'd notice right away, or would she have to be specifically looking for it (like we had to look for it in Kyouko)?

Either way, we'd want to drop it right as the song ends. If it's subtle, that keeps us from tipping our hand. If Kyouko notices, that makes it clear that we're not going to keep using it, and any further challenges (which there will almost certainly be if Sayaka beats, or at least comes close to, Kyouko) won't use the physical enchantment. If she asks, we just tell her we want to be sure it's a fair game, but otherwise won't interfere.

For now, assuming Kyouko will eventually notice the enchantment (at least by the end of the match):

[X]Enchant Sayaka
[X]Try to befriend Kyouko
-[X]As a magical girl.
--[X]Homura's here just enjoying watching the face-off of two obviously incredibly skilled players. A fair match between two masters is just amazing to watch. (emphasize 'fair')
--[X]If things are not antagonistic by the time they've finished a few more rounds (maybe 15 minutes, tops), suggest dinner for everyone. It's already after 8:00, and all we've had to eat today is ice cream. I'm sure everyone is starved.

Basically, acknowledging and praising her skill, and hinting that we'll keep it a fair match by balancing enchantments if necessary, but otherwise aren't going to interfere. Then, food.

Higure, us enchanting Sayaka would be blatant to Kyouko, and Sayaka would know something was up when she could suddenly keep up with Kyouko. Would anyone else not related to Puella Magi be able to realize that we were using magic?

Yes, Kyouko would notice. Sayaka would notice as well. Others would not, unless you vote to make a light show of it.

In that case:
[x] Enchant Sayaka
-[x] Cheer for Sayaka. Be loud.
--[x] Time the enchantment with your cheering in an attempt to make the enchantment seem like a "friendship power up" or some similar bs.
[x] Do not approach Kyouko unless she makes the first move.

Bah, I think I missed an entire update. Was backtracking because the time (7:55) seemed way later than I last remembered, and was annoyed at myself for forgetting other plans we had for tonight. Reviewing in case things got wonky.

Annnd, yup. Got slipped into the middle of the rules discussion, and I completely missed it. Need to think things through a bit more.

Clarification: Is the theater in the mall, or its own complex somewhere else?

We still need something to eat. We haven't had a proper meal since noon, and the movie is over two hours long. It'll be about 11:30 by the time we get out. Definitely want some real food beforehand.

It's 7:55 now, and the movie starts at 9:00. Allowing for ~15 minutes of DDR shenanigans, that still gives 30-40 minutes before we need to be back for the movie; sufficient time to hit the food court, or a small fast-food type restaurant nearby if we're at a movie complex (curry shop, sushi shop, mcdonalds, whatever).

Speaking of times: @Higure, is the time given in each update the time that the update starts, or the update ends?

[X] Telepathy to Kyouko to stop cheating. (Tone: Amused.) Tell her, if she can beat Sayaka without magic, we'll get her lunch. If Sayaka wins...

I'm gonna need a suggestion here. What could Kyouko give us that would cause a rivalry, not hatred?

This idea will cause Kyouko to take the fight seriously, giving Sayaka a chance to win. It introduces us to Kyouko, win or lose. We can have the wager be win-win for us, as buying Kyouko a meal is a win for us, especially with Sayaka present. If Sayaka wins, and Kyouko has to pay up, that's a rivalry, that's also a win. The wager needs to be thought about, since it will set the tone of the relationship if Sayaka wins.

Edit: I've read A Happy Dream too much. I think Kyouko should give Sayaka a kiss if Sayaka wins. Obviously, Sayaka knows nothing about the wager. Win-win-win. Plus, it would amuse Kyouko too.

Nooooo, you don't get it. We're not guilt-tripping her, we're challenging her. We're giving her an incentive to fight fair, and setting up a meal with her (that we pay for), or a debt that she has to give us. We just need to figure out a debt that she won't mind paying, as I don't trust her not to welsh and ruin it, or pay up and resent us for it. I want to befriend her.

(Kiss Sayaka! It'll be fun!)

So... What did Mikimom buy when we were shopping for electronics? Hopefully it's just her being Mikimom, and not somehow indicative that she got anything at Yuuko's place. Unfortunately, I doubt we'll be that lucky; rereading that update, I'm pretty sure Mikimom made her own wish.

But, speaking of that, the first hints of Sayaka being affected by her wish:

She seems to deflate, "But...please? You don't have to pay me, I just...I have job to do, you know? If I could keep you safe..."

Was there an error in the writing here? The phrasing sounds incomplete. Was it, "I have a job to do", or "I need to have a job to do", or "I want to have a job to do", or something else?

Regardless, the sword is already having an effect on her. Re-reading her time in Yuuko's shop, I'm still not sure whether the sheath was passed over along with the sword, but the phrasing was straight out of the descriptions of Saber from Fate Stay/Night: the king must give up his/her humanity in order to be the king. The king serves and protects his/her people. Also of note, the sword is 'just a copy'.

So, Sayaka is now taking action to 'protect' this girl who was being threatened by Kyouko. If we don't take any action here, I'm pretty sure Sayaka is going to fully manifest the Excalibur effect. How exactly, is a bit fuzzy; it may supercharge her abilities without us needing to enchant her. But if she's losing, and this battle is critical to her perceived ability to defend and protect people, it will show up one way or another.

Personally, I'd rather this not be the time and place that she manifests.

Sayaka was trying to get us to let her be our bodyguard, earlier. I'm thinking that she needs (as in, the compulsion being created by the price she paid) to have someone to serve, some duty to fulfill. Arturia's duty was to Britain as a whole. If we allow Sayaka to be our bodyguard, that may permanently lock in her duty to us. While that's somewhat selfish, and I'd like to think there are better things Sayaka could lock onto, having her magically dutybound to us (edit: or at least assisting us with our general goal of protecting Madoka and the world from death and witches) almost guarantees that she'll be able to travel back in time with us, if such a thing is possible at all. If we allow her to manifest her duty to something else, we may lose that as a possibility.

[x] If Kyouko complains, tell her that we'll pay for a meal somewhere if she manages to win despite Sayaka's enchantment.

Edit: Changed the vote.
