Renascence: A Homura Quest

Honorifics or Western-style Titles? I've used both before, which is bothersomely inconsistent

So, there have been loops where Homura has gone all "creepy serial killer"? :o
Far worse, actually...think of it like one of those gamers who likes to save their file in Skyrim before proceeding to murder, destroy, and otherwise ravage the entirety of the setting for the fun of it...only to reload the file and act like nothing happened.

Except it's the real world, and she's so broken that she's not able to start playing seriously again reloading.

Then add some genuine, Wonderland-grade insanity and a lingering, distorted affection for the people she loved before she lost it.

That should give you a rough idea.

[x] Tell her the expected date that Walpurgisnact is going to arrive. Detail its abilities, its familiars, and its apparent immunity to mundane weaponry.

...yes, yes I did. Must have grabbed it with the Center of the Mind. Fixing.

Edit: Fixed. This is what happens when I'm stuck with a laptop with a flaky touchpad.

And whew, that little brush was rough on Homura. +445 Grief, -23 sanity.

Sheer coincidence, but Enya's "Exile" came up in my player during that. Way too appropriate.

Hero!Sayaka, doing what Sayaka does best. We must never let her go.

As for Mami... bit of a surprise there. Not quite sure how to approach things, yet.

...Yea, I'm out.

I'm sorry, but frankly, I can't really help "be" someone so broken, someone who has done such atrocities (even if they got "reloaded", it was still reality for her), and quite frankly, I don't trust this forum or your authorial skills (as you have only had the chance to demonstrate it on the thread post in a forum) to be able to handle very complex issues like how to handle and recovering from criminal, homicidal insanity, as a protagonist or central character, in a way that does not demean the RL issues.

Sorry @Higure. Please don't take this personally. You are a good writer and I wish you and your player base the best from here on out.

The two of you settle in to join her, and you note an extra glass at the table...it looks like Nanoha's already here.
...
"...I'm back Kyouko! Sorry for leaving you alo...ne..."

Tomoe Mami's gaze is cold as she stares you down, and you know it's only the public locale that's keeping her from summoning muskets. Beside you, you feel Sayaka tremble slightly.
... Huh. So, is Nanoha not here yet? I'm currently slightly worried for the poor girl, if Mami's currently in Antagonist Mode.

She's lost her focus. This is your chance to push forward and take control of the conversation...but how to go about it?

Time: 5:38:25 PM

Sanity: 225/1000

Mami's not too focused, but we're not exactly in good shape, either, being heavy on the Grief and low on the SAN. We pretty much can't afford to antagonize her, but we also can't afford to delve too far into what we know, because hallucination-land is not a great place to be. I would suggest waiting to let her calm down, actually, and try to talk over food, with Nanoha present. We've got Kyouko and Sayaka for support, but the situation isn't a good one for trying to take much control.

Hmm ... the first line seems too melodramatic, especially since I don't think Homura has any way to actually gauge relative strengths of Walpurgisnacht appearances. I'd adjust the third line to say that she's been trying to kill it; it's fairly obvious that Homura can't kill it through her own devices, and if Mami presses (which she should; she's not dumb), Homura's got to confess that what she has available to her simply doesn't work against it. I'm also leery of the last line; while it's relatively true, it's one of those statements that has a very easy shot at backfiring, particularly since Time Magi are known to be unstable, and just because Homura says she's sane doesn't mean she is. Simply remaining silent on the source of our knowledge might actually be better, in some ways.

This is turning out to be one giant clusterfuck of a situation, especially since we really suck with social skills.

Ugh, I know. Honesty, when has that ever worked out? :)

Not sure either, but we should probably include bringing up the seriousness of the situation, along with the point that we need help, and that we might need to look for more "out of context" help like Nanoha and Sayaka's new abilities, abilities that are unknown to the Incubators and different enough to maybe have advantages of their own.

I like your ideas.
To be honest, I had no idea how to handle this situation and the whole vote was a spur of the moment thing.

Give me couple minutes to try to improve it.

Hmmm something like...

[] "Yes, Walpurgisnacht is coming to Mitakihara....and Im hunting it, But Ill explain all the details in a bit so that I dont repeat myself"
-[] Ask if they know where Nanoha is, it would be better to explain with everyone present.
-[] In the meanwhile start ordering food/drinks for everyone and allow Mami to gather her wits a little, hopefully she will appreciate it, engage in small talk with the others and try to calm down yourself the earlier emotional roller coaster did a number on you after all.

And when Nanoha comes in we can explain in detail and choose what to say or what not to say....help me improve it please?

Shame to see you go, and you're right...that would be way too much for this quest if I was actually going to go in depth with it.

That is probably the worst you'll ever see of her background, by a long shot, however, and Homura got past it (sort of ) a long time ago. If it's worth anything, she was only that bad for a very short while. Most of her "insane" period was basically just happily dancing from one timeline to the next, not bothering to try to save anyone. Once it reached the point you saw...well, to avoid spoilers, let's just say that "things happened," and those things gave her back her sanity, but also left her emotionally numb for an extended period. On the upside, she couldn't despair sufficiently to Witch, but her virtually nonexistent emotions prevented her from using her powers besides Time Travel.

Eventually, Oriko got involved and arranged for Homura's mind to be Healed, which burnt most of that period from her memory entirely, leaving the early parts (which weren't particularly horrible) and a couple of tiny, fleeting glimpses of the worst of it as a warning for the future.

The truth is that I'm not a good enough writer to actually depict the ongoing process of recovery, but this is what came out when I tried to show what she went through...so I've given you one horrifying glimpse of that period, and I won't be touching directly again...probably ever.

If you still want to go, I understand, but the memories are so faint that it doesn't much affect her characterization.

...also, to clarify, I'm writing this for everyone, because I want to make it clear that Homura is not living with that shit every day. The memory you saw only came up because she actively sought it out, and was forgotten the moment she let it go. If some memories in Memory Access are "pandora's box," this one is more like a Lovecraftian Horror...her mind not only won't, but can't hold on to it, because a combination of magic and self-preservation instincts keep it locked away.

That's why you have not, and will not, see her angsting about what she did back then. As far as she can normally recall, the worst things she's ever done were during the Murderface period, if you'd like to call it that, when she tended to kill people as a matter of efficiency.
