@Cetashwayo What is the Messiapi relationship with Taras? Quasi-vassal or is there some fight left in them? Have there been any further attempts to claim Brention?
I feel that its harbor would be a corner stone in any attempt to disrupt an Eretrian Adriatic trade network, if we decide to go for that.

There will be opportunities with the Messapii soon. Obviously they dislike Taras; in the historical timeline they allied to Athens during the Peloponnesian War and received funds to harass Taras and prevent them from supporting Sparta, their mother city. The Messapii are bowed but not broken and are not vassals yet.

Who's leading the Messapii now? Is it someone of Daxtus's lot or did he get turfed post defeat?

Daxtus was killed in the fighting and his clan butchered in the peace as revenge for their failure. The confederacy now appoints chiefs only in times of war elected from among the cities. The dominant personality now is the King of Neriton, Avithos Artahias.

Hmm, so not inherently thirsting for revenge against us. Do they hate us less than Taras, what with Egnatia prospering under our hegemony rather than getting enserfed as I assume occurred to the Messapii under Tarentine rule?

You took some serfs as well, but they hate you less than Taras.

Arpus is dead, replaced by his son Ausculos I Arpid. If you notice you'll see Eretria took some coastal territory; this was during a short civil war when Ausculos' younger brother challenged him for the throne. If the Exoria wins Eretria goes to war with him again in a few years after finding some pretext, but if not then Ausculos has ruled well and peacefully.

I like to imagine Iaenedar as just obviously a woman in a toga, but wearing a flamboyant fake beard attached to both ears, and nothing can change my mind.

Ariadne and "Ianedar", Master of Mint

    • For context if anyone is confused or doesn't know the reference: Back in the original quest there was an outspoken metic girl called Ariadne whose father was fined after she got in a spot of public trouble. Shortly after that she disappeared during a riot, and not a few weeks later a very bright young lad by the name of Ianedar shows up, put forward by the merchant and former Proboulos Timaeus as a metic man of good standing and great intelligence. He and Timaeus become very close, and Ianedar, who is very definitely an upstanding young man, becomes the city's master of mint, doing a very brilliant man's job of it. As a man. Which she is. He. I mean he.

    In the end, "He" and Timaeus remain very good friends (AND JUST FRIENDS) until their deaths. It wasn't anything particularly important to the quest but was a little bit of fun I snuck in for future historians in this universe to investigate and develop headcanons about.

    I know this is a joke, but we have some really badarse gays in this quest.

    Herodion for example, the dude who literally built Eretria's military, founded the walls, won every battle he fought for us and solidified our Hegemony over the Peuketii. The literal best character in the quest so far.

    Plus he had an Eyepatch. Which makes him even cooler.
     
    If Demos Antipatria brings to the front the Metic Question, Demos Drakonia empowers the aristocrats to a worrying degree. And they've actually tried to sieze the city for themselves twice, once with Lykurgus and once with Drako, the very namesake of the tribe. They'll try to take absolute power again, undoubtedly, and they only need to get lucky once to destroy the spirit and ideals of the city.

    Taking the Athenian model as inspiration, the reliance on the navy to support and protect trade tended to make the political strength of the lower classes that manned the oars more prominent.
