0.4 Picnic Party in the Park

It was rather late when Daryl, Chandra, and Jace finished cleaning up her yard, and so he left exploring the Neighborhood to another day, though his time with Chandra and Jace ended on a rather strained note. Perhaps he'll find out more at the party, when he can ask some of their other friends.

Daryl spent some time working with his magic and doing some work on the car's frame, smoothing it out, making sure that it was properly aligned and such. Mostly detail work, after he's finished, it doesn't look half bad. Although all those places where it was bent would remain weak points on the frame till he could get some more advanced magic to deal with it. (Frame now at 'Not so bad', needs better magic to improve anymore)

On Tuesday evening, Chandra texted him that the Party would be Thursday afternoon. And that everyone had to bring at least one non-store bought food item.

Wednesday was spent finishing that walk around the Neighborhood, and he didn't see Chandra or Jace over at their houses, he did discover a stripmall and gas station within walking distance of his house. Wasn't much to it, a pizza place, convenience store, optometrist, a dyalisis clinic, drug store, and a small chain clothing store Daryl had never heard of.

The next day, after Nicole dropped Daryl off at the park with his [FOOD CHOICE] and some chips and two liters, which were quickly deposit on the picnic tables loaded down with food from everyone else.

Chandra's fiery hair was rather easy to spot. She was talking to another girl in a sort of goth style purple dress with black hair. Daryl could see Jace on one of the basketball courts, playing with some other teens, the basketball team he supposes.

He could also see a rather striking tall dark haired boy talking to a group over by one of the tables, a short haired blonde with an eye patch sitting next to a brown haired man wearing a Reboot t-shirt of all things, a woman with blue hair over by the plastic wading pool someone had brought, and a tall, severe, and rather well dressed dark haired girl, surrounded by a group of similarly dressed girls.

Choose who you go to first:
[] Chandra & Purple Dress
[] Jace & Basketball Team

[] Tall, Dark, and Handsome
[] Bob and Patches
[] Mermaid Woman
[] The Queen Bee

After dropping his brownies off, Daryl heads off to introduce himself to Chandra and her friend. "Hey, looks like there's a lot of people here."

Chandra smiles at him before introducing him to the girl in the purple dress. "Hey Daryl. This is Liliana, Lils, this is Daryl."

Liliana gives Daryl a once over before giving him a small smile. "Good to meet you. I'm always happy to meet new friends."

Daryl nods, "Chandra mentioned a bit about you. Excited about our Senior year?"

"Of course! Only one more year and I won't have those nuns hovering over me all the time. I wish I could go to Dryden with Chandra, but my parents want me in the 'best' school in the county. *sigh* Which means St. Mary's Academy for Girls."

Chandra snorts at that. "Admit it, you love strutting around in that uniform. Remember last year when you came over and we were sitting in the gym bleachers after school waiting for Jace to finish basketball practice and you caused that pile up under the basket when you stretched?"

Liliana shrugs at that, immediately drawing your attention. "When you've got it, flaunt it."

Chandra turns back to Daryl, wrapping her arm around his. "Anyway, Daryl's new, so let's introduce him to the others."

Liliana takes his other arm before they both led him off. "Yes, lets show stud here around."

Their first stop is the handsome guy that's the center of attention of a small group of other teens. Chandra introduces him. "Daryl, this is Dack Fayden, short for Dakota. Dack, this is Daryl Lexington."

A few minutes of chatting and you learned that he was on the football team with his best friend Marshal, who was still on vacation, but he'll be in school Monday, and that he was a pretty good amateur magician when he suddenly had an deck of cards appear in his hand and demonstrated a few tricks.

Next on the agenda was Patches and Bob, actual names Freya Stormguard and Jason Carthallion, who do martial arts together at a nearby dojo. Before things get too awkward, she tells you that she lost her eye five years ago to a drunk driver. The conversation quickly wrapped up after that.

Then there was Kiora Tritons, she was the best swimmer in the state, wants to be marine biologist, and is working towards getting into the national trials for the 2016 Olympics.

And finally, Chandra and Liliana introduce you to Nessa Revane, Head Chearleader for Dryden. She gives you a look over with a critical eye before greeting you in a rather neutral tone, and then introducing her posse of cheerleaders.

At this point, Chandra checks her phone, before dragging you off towards the tables piled high with food. "Whup, it's time to start getting the food ready. So Daryl, do you know how to grill?"

Help get the food ready (pick one)-
[] Work the grills with Chandra and Liliana
[] Get the food, plates, utensils, napkins, etc. set out with the Cheerleaders
[] Set up the grills, picnic tables, chairs, etc. with the Basketball team.

After the foods ready and you grab a plate, who do you talk to? (pick one)
[] Dack
[] Freya and Jason
[] Kiora
[] Nessa

0.4b A Good Grilling

Daryl helps Chandra and Liliana get the meat out of the coolers and ready for the grills, idly chatting. "You guys cook much?"

Chandra replies from where she's preparing hamburgers. "Open flame cooking just come easy to me."

Liliana looks up from a tray full of chicken quarters. "I'm a decent cook."

"'Decent?' Lils, I'm a 'decent' cook, you're like some sort of domestic goddess right out of the 50's when you cook. The only kind of cooking I'm better than you is if fires involved." Chandra starts putting her hamburgers on a couple of grills. "Or have you forgotten that big blue ribbon you got at the fair for your triple layered marzipan super cake?"

Liliana finishes putting her chicken in her grills before sticking her tounge out at Chandra and turning to Daryl. "It wasn't that big a deal, I was competing in the teenage bracket anyway. Daryl, what kind of cooking are you good at?"

[] Write in

An hour of inconsequential chatting later, Daryl grabs a plate and heads over to talk to Freya and Jason about their martial arts, and to apologize to Freya for the awkwardness of their introduction. He makes his way over to their table. "Hey, I wanted to apologize for earlier."

Freya waves for you to sit as she finishes her bite of chicken. "It's no problem, it happens a lot."

"So, you two big in martial arts?"

Jason puts his burger down and takes his turn. "Pretty big, I placed third in the state competition last year, and the great Norse goddess here brought home a hideous trophy almost as big as she is."

Freya snorts at that, before nodding to Daryl. "I can see that you're not into martial arts, so what's your thing?"

Daryl shrugs before swallowing a mouthful of chips. "Back in Boston, I'd be the one that organized stuff like this. Now though? Mostly unpacking and working on my car."

Freya perks up at the mention of a car, while Jason sighs and goes to get another pair of plates. "Oh, what kind of car are you working on?"

The next few hours pass by in a blur of car talk, it seems that Freya is a bit of a car nut, she drives a Chevelle Super Sport that she and her dad rebuilt together. Daryl picked up a lot of mechanic tips from Freya, who is frankly amazed that he took on a heavily wrecked car as his first rebuild.

Jason contributed as well, but he only knew about cars because Freya was so into it. Though he does offer some insights into metal work. His dad ran a metal shop, so Jason did a lot of mechanical projects for school and Freya. He also made the suggest that you could get some other parts and restore them for selling if you needed more cash for your car. It's what Freya did to pay for her half of the Chevelle. They give you their numbers, with Freya wanting to see your car before too long, and Jason offers to help with any welding or metal work that needs to be done.

All too soon, the picnic starts breaking up, and Daryl's mother is here to pick him up. A quick round of goodbyes and he's soon back home, ready for his last weekend before school starts Monday.

Omake: Daryl's Ponderings on Magic
There is no such thing as the supernatural, you think, a thought that might strike one as odd, given that you are currently repairing a car's paint job with nothing more than the power of your mind.

You was using magic, like, right now! How could you deny the supernatural? Your reasoning, however, was simple: Everything that exists is part of the natural order of things. If something that seems supernatural, like magic, actually exists, then it is part of the natural order of things, and thus isn't, in fact, supernatural. It just means that we have to revise our theories about what is and is not natural. It would hardly be the first time that has happened.

If you were a stodgy old scientist, you would probably call your newfound abilities something long and fancy-sounding with "psycho-" and "manipulation" in it, but at least for the moment, 'Magic' seemed to be as good a handle as any other. You might call it something else later if you ever figure out anything about how or why it works.

While the why of it still eludes you, you have managed to make some inroads into figuring out how it works, and how to use it. Since you mysteriously healed your own broken arm, you have been able to vaguely sense a reserve of some sort of hard-to-describe energy within you, which you can use to turn your will into reality in a number of minor ways. You have noticed that your reserve refills over time, and have managed, through effort and practice, to increase both the size of your magical reserve and the rate at which it refills.

Possibly the weirdest aspect of how the 'magic' works is the spells. The magic lets you alter reality with the force off your will, infused with energy from your reserves, but only if you take the time to create a specific 'spell' ahead of time. Instincts you cannot explain tell you that you form spells by applying a process you understand to a concept you understand, to produce an effect. If you created a complex enough spell, and had enough magical energy on hand, you think that you could produce pretty much any effect. The combination of such utter freedom in principle, with such stringent limitation in practice struck you as quite odd for a time, until you realised that magic was less like being able to turn your will and imagination into reality, and more like a set of powerful and versatile tools, and the means to build them.

Just as you can only shave off strips of wood to make a surface smooth if you have the right tool, in this case, a plane, you can only hear another's thoughts if you use the right spell, in this case, "I'm Just Sayin'".

Your discovery of magic has the potential to revolutionise pretty much all forms of knowledge and industry, leading to a question that has been prickling at the back of your mind for some time now: Why hasn't it done so already?

The only explanations you can think of are that either you are the first to use magic, or that the users of magic have, for whatever reason, decided to conceal themselves. Whatever the answer is, you are going to be quite cautious about using magic where anyone else can see you until you understand it better.

0.5 Freedom's End

The last weekend before school starts. With nearly all of the unpacking and organizing done, Daryl would have a lot more time available during the week. Which would now be taken up by school.

Worst. Summer. Ever.

At least he knew a few people going into this new school. Daryl was afraid that he'd have to go in blind, as it were. But he'd made a pretty good impression on Chandra yesterday, and Liliana was rather impressed with his baking skills. Freya and Jason seemed pretty cool, and no doubt he'd be tapping their expertise frequently for help with restoring his car.

Jace on the other hand, seemed to like him a bit less after the picnic. And that opinion was shared, if to a lesser extent, by the basketball team. Maybe he should spend a bit of time with Jace, see if he couldn't smooth things out with him.

But that was for Monday. This morning, he'd be working on his car's interior. It was a mess, water damage, dirt, tears, and it looked like animals had nested inside of it. After all morning, and most of his magic, he'd cleaned a lot of it up, and it looked a whole lot better, but it was still stained and torn up. (Interior upgraded to 'Broken', needs better spells to deal with leather, buy a new leather interior $2000, get some leather patches and fix it yourself $200.)

After lunch and a shower, Nicole took him up to the Dayton Mall for some last minute school supplies, and to spend some time with any of his new friends. But not Chandra and Liliana, because they're at the Boat House party in Babylon Gardens.

[] Call your new friends up and see if they want to hang out at the mall
-[] Call Jace up, see if you can't patch things up before your relationship settles into antagonism.
-[] Call Jace, Freya, and Jason up, you might need some buffers to keep things from deteriorating with Jace, though you won't have much chance of making any big improvements with him either.
-[] You know what, if Jace's head is up his butt, then that's his problem. Just call Freya and Jason and see if they want to hang out at the mall this afternoon.
-[] Don't call anyone, Daryl can see if he can find someone else at the mall.

Sunday morning, with a full tank of Magic, was dedicated to working on the car's paint. Most of that tank was spent cleaning and stretching paint to cover the scratches, and it looks a lot better, but while covered up with paint, the scratches now look kind of like scars when you get close. And from the front, you don't even have to be close, as it's looks like someone took a grinder to it with a vengeance, and then covered it up with a poor paint job. (Paint upgraded to 'Broken', but better spells are needed to improve further, Spend $1000 for a new custom paint job, or buy your own paint {$200} and do it yourself)

The afternoon, after a few hours of rest and lunch, was spent studying his magic, and testing out a new spell. This 'Student's Boon' he'd created, was a godsend, it made studying so much easier than before. Easier to focus, easier to remember, and easier to process. Hours later, when it finally wore off, Daryl looked at nearly twice the notes he'd usually take during a study session. Yes, this was looking to be one of his better ideas of magic. (2 XP gained)

Daryl decides that it's high time he talked things out with Jace, man to man, and without any distractions. Since the only real problem between the two of them is Jace's over possessiveness of Chandra, it's rather fortunate that she's at that party with Liliana this afternoon.

Jace, while reluctant, does agree to hang out at the mall a bit this afternoon. About an hour later, Daryl is meeting him in the main entry way of the mall.

It was with some rather awkward small talk during the walk to the food court, but once they got their food and sat down, it was time to get to the meat of the issue. "Look, just what is this thing with Chandra, because you act like you're dating her, and you've been a bit abrasive about it, but Chandra doesn't act like she's dating you. So what's the deal?"

Jace puts his drink down and looks you in the eye. "The 'deal' is, we've been together since second grade, we're going to the same college, and the only reasons we aren't dating is because her parent won't allow her to date till she's graduated. Granted, mine won't let me date till I'm graduated either, which is another reason, but that's the way things are. We go to college, date, graduate, I get drafted, and then we get married." Jace leans forward, piercing Daryl with a serious look. "Are we going to have a problem?"

[] "No, no. I just wanted to know what was going on is all."
[] "No trouble from me, but you might want to talk to her parents and make it official, even if you can't go on actual dates. I know Senior year can get a little crazy."
[] "Na, I'm cool with that. I'm not going after Chandra or anything, it's just that you two are the first people I've met here, and she's been friendly, and you, well, you've been looking at me with that death glare every time I've seen you. There are other people I know now, like Liliana, Freya, and Jason, who I talk about stuff I like to do with them, like baking, or restoring my car."

Daryl shakes his head and holds up his hands in a placating gesture. "Na, I'm cool with that. Jace shows a bit of surprise, then softens his posture and leans back a bit. "I've come off too strong again, haven't I?" He shakes his head, "I'm sorry for acting like a jerk, but ever since-, well, no matter. I know I get a little crazy about Chandra, but it's her story to tell. I will say that she used to be able to go to places alone when she first got her license." Jace nods to himself a bit. "Look, I'm sorry for acting like a jerk to you all week, you just kind of hit my buttons, stranger coming up to Chandra in her yard and all. You seem like a decent guy, can we just start over?"

@Gear, are we able to make a mind manipulation spell of some sor that will reveal to us whether someone else has the distinctive mental connections used in magic?
I suppose you could go rooting around looking for memories of people doing magic.

Jace smiles at Daryl before reaching over and taking his hand. "I'm Jace."

They shake before cleaning up their food and leaving the food court. "So, Basketball, what is this strange and wonderful sport all about?"

Jace laughs, and then drags you all over the mall to various sport related stores for the next few hours telling you all about basketball, and how if you wanted to be serious about, what kind of equipment you'd need, how to learn, and where to practice. Interlude: Nicole

As she watched her son walk off with his friend toward the food court, she couldn't help but feel grateful that he'd come out of his funk these last few weeks. Nicole had been rather worried over how Daryl was taking the divorce, hiding up in his room most of the summer, obviously not sleeping well, barely talking to her, her sister Dani, or even his old friends from Boston.

And then he bought that wreck, and she was so sure that he was losing his mind. But Daryl's performed miracles on that thing over the last two weeks. Sure, it was still a wreck, but it was a much better wreck now. Nicole was sure that he could get three or four times what he paid for it if he sold it now.

Not that she would ever suggest that, as it seemed that working on that mass of twisted steel was just what he needed to get over the funk he's been in since they moved. He was out and about, making new friends, and acting more like the old Daryl she knew from Boston.

Nicole pulled a few tissues out of her purse to dab at her tears. She had been so worried that moving back to Dryden had been a mistake, that he'd never be the happy boy that he'd once been. It had kept her up more than one night, worrying over his future. She'd been considering getting him some counseling if he didn't get better after school started.

And now she felt silly, sitting on a bench in the middle of the mall and crying. But she felt so relieved, that all of the worry she'd been holding for her son had just lifted itself off her shoulders.

For the first time since she caught Philip cheating on her, she really felt like everything was going to be okay.
