Also, fair warning, be careful where and when you use this spell, as anything living caught in it's area of effect will die if you start shifting things around. It's very dangerous. But you can have it do less than the maximum in all areas, like all spells do.
Yeah, I fucked up on planning with our spells, I think, in getting too lured by the shininess of level 3 spells that could both do what we need and do more than one thing.
@Orisha91 you forgot to specify how much XP you are channeling into dominance of matter, and I'm not sure that we have the prereqs for that yet.
I did away with prereqs, as everyone just seems to keep forgetting them, and instead of encouraging lvl 1 and lvl 2 spells, actually seemed to discourage them as people tried to make super lvl3 spells to do anything a lower lvl spell could do.
Haven't been following the quest as closely as I should have , so I don't mind if you or anyone else gets to editing.
Aleister Crowley was responsible for giving the western world a deeper more sinister view into the world of Magic(k), the serious stuff at least on the American and British side of things. You can't really study ceremonial based magic, chaos magic, occultism, and the study of Yoga in the western world without hearing this guy's name. He had a bit of rep though(understatement) and some views would be reprehensible today...
Studying him give us some valuable insights and a wealth of material to work with on the GM or players side if we're willing to go a little darker.
Or history, or anything really. I've debated with myself about revealing this, as it's a bit of a spoiler for the Plot, so I'll put it in a spoiler box.
Before Daryl, magic never existed on Earth. Every bit of 'magic' out there is either ancient religious stuff, superstition, games, or new age quackery. None of it is real, none of it really matters.
@Gear shouldn't we be getting more than 4XP per action? IIRC Students Boon gives us a +2, Swift thought and Thought Excitation gives us a +1 each and use of perfect memory spells to remember spell-work gives us another +1 as we don't have to leaf through notes. So together with the base 1, we should have a total of 6 XP per action.
Nope, from the start when you first used Student's Boon in 1.1, you got 1 XP per action of Magic Study, and Student's Boon only gave +1 XP, for 2 XP total.
Also, about spell regen. Am I correct in thinking that every morning we start with 40 Magic and regen 37 Magic giving us a potential total of 77 Magic per day, right?
I suppose you guys have studied enough magic to reveal the full system of Enchanting now. Enchanting is level cost + Spell Cost for both types of enchantment.
The two ways to Enchant are Effects and Spells.
Effects are when you enchant the effect of a spell into an item, like say, an amulet that causes the effect of Student's Boon on whoever it touches. Now, this may seem like a far better way to enchant than putting the spell into an item, but Effect Enchantments have some rather serious drawbacks. The biggest one is that it's an always on effect, it can't be turned off without either removing the amulet, destroying it, or stripping the magic from it.
The other drawback is that the parameters of the spell effect are locked in at enchanting. If you guys wanted to enchant Dominance, it would be locked into doing whatever you chose it to do when you enchant an object. For example, if you enchanted a stick with it, and you had the effect being that it made a standard 6" steel screw precisely two inches from the tip every 3 seconds as long as an electrical current was applied to the other end, that is what the now enchanted stick would do forever until it was either disconnected from the electrical signal, destroyed, or had the magic stripped away. It could not be changed, altered, or stopped.
Spell Enchanting is much more flexible, as it is a whole spell put into an item, meaning that it works just like casting a regular spell. You can use it just the same. It's drawbacks are that you have to supply magic just like casting a spell.
But don't worry, once you get the Magic Element, new possibilities will open up, and you can put more than one enchantment on an item, both at a time, and over time.
Enchanting dominance costs 300 magic, as it is a level 3 spell, possibly on top of some XP for the item's magic and regen. (That part was never made clear, but it might be that if we want an item with a continuous effect, we have to impart it with enough magic and regen to cast it continually.) Also, remember the repeated warnings about plot starting at the end of this turn. We should get at least some of those spells now.
You need the Magic Element to enchant an item with it's own Magic and Regen. And don't be too worried about Plot, it's still a ways off from getting up in Daryl's face. Unless you decide to get up in it's face, that is.
Or history, or anything really. I've debated with myself about revealing this, as it's a bit of a spoiler for the Plot, so I'll put it in a spoiler box.

We will only be able to cast domianance via ritual at first, but should be qble to do so with magic saved up over the course of next week.
@Gear, some things you said above made me wonder if we were entirely on the same page about just what dominance does.
To my understanding, it empowered the caster to sense and reshape nearby matter down to the molecular level until the ended, able to work at any given time on an area up to its area of effect, at a distance given by its range.
Was I mistaken in this?
You warning about its dangers sounded like you were having it do something rather different, although precisly what, I couldn't say.

Dominance is like a room full of automated machinery that can do nearly anything, and your in a control room full of controls. You can set up a lot of automated process', such as having this area of the room make a dozen of these shapes, before moving to another set of controls and having them make a hundred connectors, and so on. But even with the advanced controls and programming tools, you're still only human, and must still balance quality of control and quantity of control.
Also, it's a Mind/Matter spell, meaning it takes stuff apart, puts it together again, then turns it on. Organic Life does not react to that process well. It would be like walking into a wood chipper that feeds it's chips into a factory. Sure, the factory can make bodies, but those bodies will be dead at creation.

Ok, so the warning was about living things actually being affected by it, rather than just being in the same region as what we are working on.
So, for instance using it to create a box around someone would not be a problem for their survival, but trying to use it to reshape someone is likely to end in blood and tears?
Regarding the fact that we are only human, I am guessing that we could get a lot more out of DoM with the right mental spells? (Including IEU, to some extent, I am guessing?)

Pretty much. And yeah, better mental spells, more utility out of Dominant. But remember, Dominant's theme is all about the creation, changing, and shaping of non-living material into simple and complex mechanical constructs. It's what the spells , 'editing tools', we'll say, are specialized to accomplish.
I don't know much about it and its not something discussed a lot in the fam. His generation were a little bible-thumpy, so I guess he's the black sheep.
Oh, he's kinda...creepy too. Loves him some architecture though.
Just read over this quest and I like the idea behind it, it's rare to find a protagonist focusing on social skills. Although admittedly it seems like there's been some constant distraction with the tech upgrades due to the car.
Sorry for taking so long, was a bit torn on what plot I wanted to do, and how I was going to start foreshadowing it. But here it is. Voting options for 2.1 will be given after the end of chapter interludes, one of which you guys are going to be voting for. So tell me who you'd like to see in an interlude.

1.9 Plotting for the Future
Daryl looked over his plans for the week, and he was still running at a magical deficit. It looked like he would have to delay casting IEU until Wednesday morning if he wanted to stay in his magical budget with all the other things he wanted to do. (-9 more IEU actions)
Good news though, he had finished his spell, the greatest piece of magic Daryl had yet to create.
Dominance of Matter (Lvl 3, Mind/Matter, CreationX6/ManipulationX6/Transmutationx6/Destructionx6) - The caster can sense, create and alter matter freely down to the molecular level.
Duration: Day Long
Casting Range: 1'
Area of Effect: 6' Radius
69 Magic
Sure, he couldn't actually cast it yet, but when he could, oh the things he could do.
Besides finishing his latest masterpiece, Daryl had also spent a couple of afternoons going through junkyards looking for repairable parts that he could resell on Ebay (-$400 now, +$1000 in 2.2). Although, as he was bringing some boxes of repaired junk out to his moms car for a run to the post office, he thought he saw somebody out of the corner of his eye.
But when Daryl turned around to look, there was nobody there.
Most of his evenings during the week Daryl decided to fully test the limits of IEU and Uplink by spending several evenings just calling people through his cell, computer, and phone line simultaneously. Many conversations were had with practically everyone, including one of his better friends from Boston. Chandra floated the idea of another group activity like the picnic, maybe a joint outing to the mall or some such in the weeks to come. Daryl also took some time to research car mechanics, which stood him in good stead when conversing with Freya and Jason, and will no doubt continue to serve him in his future interactions with them. (+Social with all, Moderate Amateur Car Mechanic Knowledge acquired)
Studying was also not neglected (8 actions, +4 XP each, +32 XP total)
Friday evening, after setting the last of the parts up on Ebay, Daryl was walking through the living room to get a snack from the kitchen when he overheard the evening news his mom was watching.
"-Where Kurdish forces are rallying in the face of this new ISIS offensive. Back to you, Brian."
"Thanks Steve. In national news, the body of Joan Langston, wife of recently murdered Hollywood lawyer Terrance Langston three weeks ago, was found this morning on the side of a county road in rural San Bernadino. Their children, Jordan and Claire, are still missing. The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department had a press briefing shortly after Joan's body was discovered-"
Clearly the plot hook is that we are about to ship off to bring hell to ISIS!
(In seriousness, I have no idea how those killings relate to us. They are not nearby, they involve no-one and nowhere we know, and don't seem to have any distinctive method or motive.)

What, you expected somebody to raise a giant castle in the middle of Central Park, declare themselves the king of the world, then proceed to terrorize the locals by shooting lightning bolts from their hands as their army of magical penguins set about conquering the world?

Well, Everyone got their magic at the same time, so any other factual or theoretical magic users are only just now getting their first major magical ability. And are too worried about government kill teams and/or WIZARD POLICE! to do anything overt. Yet.
Yeah, you've hit it on the head. Chapter 2 will be deepening foreshadowing as plots and events move forward, and evidence of such builds up, with Chapter 3 starting as the world faces overwhelming proof that crazy shit is going down.
Anyway, like I said in the update, vote for who you want to see in an interlude.
To clarify, I thought you had a list of 3-4 specific characters you wanted to do interludes for, and were going to post that list and have us vote for which interlude we wanted, as opposed to doing an interlude on any known character we choose.
We'd better get started on learning architecture so our castle doesn't fall out from under us due to poorly placed struts and lack of load-bearing walls.
