Always nice to wake up to a lot of productive, on topic discussion going on. Have an XP.

Apologizes if i'm miss reading this are you saying we can spend XP on a spell we already know to improve it further?
Yes. You can make spells more powerful, last longer (spells pretty much start off as instant, or only for a minute or so, depending on what they are), cost less (Minimum 1 Magic), able to be cast from farther away (all spells pretty much start off at touch range), and other effects that may depend on the spell.

That did not actually clarify whether we can increase the rate of XP gain when studying magic using spells we curreently have access to.
Yes.
So at present, would it be something like "+10% to your ability to focus, recall, and commit to memory for the next few minutes" or something?
too many numbers, remember the two golden rules of the quest
1. No dice
2. No math more complicated than addition and subtraction
Would using Student's Boon while practicing magic give us an increase in the amount of XP gained from doing so?
Yes, using this spell during a Magic study action would give you an extra XP. Though you would have to spend a few XP to make it last long enough to do so.

Here's different take on what I was going on about earlier, not quite as impressive in scope but hopefully does well.

How's this GM?

Perception(lvl1, Mind, Transmutation): Use focus on a sense to increase its strength. ( Your mind will devote less energy to other senses in response.)
Magic cost: 2
Looks good.
I want to get student's boon, because it might give us more XP per magic workout, and should be ridiculously useful for more conventional studies, and fairly crucially, is not a morally dubious social spell. Unfortunately, it costs 6XP and we have 4, so it will have to wait.
Look at magic this way. It's a toolbox, all you need to do anything are the right tools, time, and imagination.
... Huh.
@Gear, which of these is right?
You had 6 XP, 7 XP now, I missed that in the vote options when I copied it.

I have updated my vote again.

@Gear, is 1XP into Student's boon's duration enough to increase it to the point at which we can use it in magic practice?

If so, will that take effect this turn or next?

2 XP actually. Right now, it pretty much goes Instant/minute or so, Scene/20 minutes or so, couple of hours, then day. Each upgrade also increases the spell cost by 1, and everything takes effect after the vote is called.

You would need an extra XP though if you want it to have it this turn. We could see if we get 10 votes, or you could put it off till next turn and use the Magic Research of this turn to pay for it. Somebody could write some Omake about roads not taken, possible future scenes, backgrounds of characters, etc. As long as it's not obvious crap, you guys would get an XP for it.

Or you could bug @Aeraxis to cash in his Fate point in for extra XP.

Omake: Daryl's Ponderings on Magic
There is no such thing as the supernatural, you think, a thought that might strike one as odd, given that you are currently repairing a car's paint job with nothing more than the power of your mind.

You was using magic, like, right now! How could you deny the supernatural? Your reasoning, however, was simple: Everything that exists is part of the natural order of things. If something that seems supernatural, like magic, actually exists, then it is part of the natural order of things, and thus isn't, in fact, supernatural. It just means that we have to revise our theories about what is and is not natural. It would hardly be the first time that has happened.

If you were a stodgy old scientist, you would probably call your newfound abilities something long and fancy-sounding with "psycho-" and "manipulation" in it, but at least for the moment, 'Magic' seemed to be as good a handle as any other. You might call it something else later if you ever figure out anything about how or why it works.

While the why of it still eludes you, you have managed to make some inroads into figuring out how it works, and how to use it. Since you mysteriously healed your own broken arm, you have been able to vaguely sense a reserve of some sort of hard-to-describe energy within you, which you can use to turn your will into reality in a number of minor ways. You have noticed that your reserve refills over time, and have managed, through effort and practice, to increase both the size of your magical reserve and the rate at which it refills.

Possibly the weirdest aspect of how the 'magic' works is the spells. The magic lets you alter reality with the force off your will, infused with energy from your reserves, but only if you take the time to create a specific 'spell' ahead of time. Instincts you cannot explain tell you that you form spells by applying a process you understand to a concept you understand, to produce an effect. If you created a complex enough spell, and had enough magical energy on hand, you think that you could produce pretty much any effect. The combination of such utter freedom in principle, with such stringent limitation in practice struck you as quite odd for a time, until you realised that magic was less like being able to turn your will and imagination into reality, and more like a set of powerful and versatile tools, and the means to build them.

Just as you can only shave off strips of wood to make a surface smooth if you have the right tool, in this case, a plane, you can only hear another's thoughts if you use the right spell, in this case, "I'm Just Sayin'".

Your discovery of magic has the potential to revolutionise pretty much all forms of knowledge and industry, leading to a question that has been prickling at the back of your mind for some time now: Why hasn't it done so already?

The only explanations you can think of are that either you are the first to use magic, or that the users of magic have, for whatever reason, decided to conceal themselves. Whatever the answer is, you are going to be quite cautious about using magic where anyone else can see you until you understand it better.

@Skewfiend Nice, have 2 XP, and a Fate Point for the Quest's first Omake.
Excellent, I am revising my vote once more in light of that. Hopefully this will be the last time.

I would encourage people to join me in buying and improving Student's boon with me, as that will allow us to double our rate of XP gain while practising magic, and will also almost certainly help us with any kind of study or difficult task.

I believe that I'm going to let voting go on for another day, due to ongoing discussion and shifting plans, so the Update will be sometime tomorrow afternoon.

0.5 Freedom's End

The last weekend before school starts. With nearly all of the unpacking and organizing done, Daryl would have a lot more time available during the week. Which would now be taken up by school.

Worst. Summer. Ever.

At least he knew a few people going into this new school. Daryl was afraid that he'd have to go in blind, as it were. But he'd made a pretty good impression on Chandra yesterday, and Liliana was rather impressed with his baking skills. Freya and Jason seemed pretty cool, and no doubt he'd be tapping their expertise frequently for help with restoring his car.

Jace on the other hand, seemed to like him a bit less after the picnic. And that opinion was shared, if to a lesser extent, by the basketball team. Maybe he should spend a bit of time with Jace, see if he couldn't smooth things out with him.

But that was for Monday. This morning, he'd be working on his car's interior. It was a mess, water damage, dirt, tears, and it looked like animals had nested inside of it. After all morning, and most of his magic, he'd cleaned a lot of it up, and it looked a whole lot better, but it was still stained and torn up. (Interior upgraded to 'Broken', needs better spells to deal with leather, buy a new leather interior $2000, get some leather patches and fix it yourself $200.)

After lunch and a shower, Nicole took him up to the Dayton Mall for some last minute school supplies, and to spend some time with any of his new friends. But not Chandra and Liliana, because they're at the Boat House party in Babylon Gardens.

[] Call your new friends up and see if they want to hang out at the mall
-[] Call Jace up, see if you can't patch things up before your relationship settles into antagonism.
-[] Call Jace, Freya, and Jason up, you might need some buffers to keep things from deteriorating with Jace, though you won't have much chance of making any big improvements with him either.
-[] You know what, if Jace's head is up his butt, then that's his problem. Just call Freya and Jason and see if they want to hang out at the mall this afternoon.
-[] Don't call anyone, Daryl can see if he can find someone else at the mall.

Sunday morning, with a full tank of Magic, was dedicated to working on the car's paint. Most of that tank was spent cleaning and stretching paint to cover the scratches, and it looks a lot better, but while covered up with paint, the scratches now look kind of like scars when you get close. And from the front, you don't even have to be close, as it's looks like someone took a grinder to it with a vengeance, and then covered it up with a poor paint job. (Paint upgraded to 'Broken', but better spells are needed to improve further, Spend $1000 for a new custom paint job, or buy your own paint {$200} and do it yourself)

The afternoon, after a few hours of rest and lunch, was spent studying his magic, and testing out a new spell. This 'Student's Boon' he'd created, was a godsend, it made studying so much easier than before. Easier to focus, easier to remember, and easier to process. Hours later, when it finally wore off, Daryl looked at nearly twice the notes he'd usually take during a study session. Yes, this was looking to be one of his better ideas of magic. (2 XP gained)

@Gear

Couple of mix ups I think.

You probably want this to -[] You know what, if Jason's <- Jace head is up his butt, then that's his problem. Just call Freya and Jason and see if they want to hang out at the mall this afternoon.

Excellent.

@Gear out of interest what's the xp cost to drop the magic cost of a spell? 1:1? If we wanted to increase the duration of students boon to last a whole day how much xp would that cost?
