Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Should probably mention, will write the chapter in a couple of hours.
Am busty right now.

EDIT: I'm not even going to fix that, it's amazing. *Busy

" I will be your Nuclear Option, but I will not be an unfeeling or unthinking one. I want to know who, where, and why, with any reasoning and suspicions you have. I like honesty, and staying honest with me goes a long way. I don't want to go into things or places blind unless you have a damn good reason. I understand there will be emergencies where such is a neccessity, but I have my own reasons and morals and I will keep to them."

Basically plan random_npc but expanded.

@Rukia Is it the first time Morgan sees Karen acting like a 'Mafia boss'?

On top of what Rukia said

All of Morgan's reactions were to us not Karen:

Karen lets out a slow mmmm, not saying anything for several seconds. "Very well then, I assume that you want to know why I've brought you half way across the world to talk to me?" She takes a sip from her Tea.

You nod in response, not saying anything, but you feel your magic waiting, carefully simmering under the layers of the world. Karen doesn't react to your non-verbal response, but you see Morgan stiffen slightly and ball one of her hands into a fist in her lap.

From a simple, non-threatening question, our magic starts reacting and Morgan stiffens

Her efforts to seemingly talk around her own offer of answers was annoying, but it was about what you had expected. A probing move, to see how you would react to her taking a superior position. You stay silent as you stare at her, Una shifting slightly closer to you. You will either tell me, or you won't. How long will you draw this out?

Karen joins you in your staring match, both of you looking straight into the others eyes. She was just inside of your sensing range and you could feel how calm her temperature was, Morgan's was slowly rising, stress you presumed.

Cerys refuses to even answer Karen when she speaks, until the whole offer is made in full.

You narrow your eyes at her as her gaze turns to your sister, the air itself rippling slightly as your magic flickers silently.

Doesn't show a reaction from Morgan, but still, the air ripples and we narrow our eyes at Karen for even looking at our sister.

You let out a long breath, closing your eyes for a second before looking back to Karen. "What would you say if I said no?"

Morgan jerks slightly, but Karen just takes another sip of her Tea.

Literally the first thing we say when the offer is made is "what if I said no."

Very hostile; presumptuous that something bad is likely to happen if we refuse, and makes our first words in the conversation be ones that definitely show that we are considering refusal.

She looks at you seriously, the first time you've actually seen the look on her face. "Anything Necessary."

Morgan didn't react to Karen at all when she went very serious and stated "Anything Necessary" in regard to human targets.

You cast a glance to your sister out of the corner of your eye, she was sitting bolt straight and her eyes were glued on Karen. She still held you tightly. I'm sorry for getting you involved with my mess. "My sister has the same benefits?"

Morgan looks like you struck her physically with that statement.

Morgan is noticeably pained by the sheer amount of distrust we are showing.

Cerys was hostile and untrusting the whole talk, and had showed nothing of the possibility that she would act that way until the meeting started.

I mean when Morgan first met Cerys that was hostile in the beginning, but that is something she put down in the "hostile because she thought I was a danger to the sister she sees as a daughter".

Morgan and Karen don't know our backstory. They don't know what a bloody miracle it was that Cerys showed any trust in Morgan at all (and frankly the vote on it almost went to the "don't tell anyone about me or I won't even give you the common courtesy of telling you my name").

They don't know that we never had anyone to depend on.

That many of our previous employers were the type that didn't press gang us into their gangs only because bigger gangs would take issue with that happening to children (at the very least that is probably how Cerys perceives it even if most would not have anyway).

That the people we had done business with in the past were the kind who were fine with us doing crimes or hiding a body when Cerys was a normal mundane child.

That we literally never experienced anyone helping us for no reason until the spirit of the land stepped in a week ago.

Cerys was out of sorts, on the run with Una in tow, with no one to depend on an always, then a person comes along who actually knows about magic, has a "reason" for following them that checked out for her and after the spirit of the land proved trustworthy, decided to trust once again, in another human that was not Una, for perhaps the first time.

Of course, Cerys who had multiple bosses in the past, all wanting her to do things she probably originally thought unpleasant or detestable, however, can't keep up that same trust when faced with another perspective boss.

Heck Cerys even thought "I'm sorry for getting you involved with my mess" when thinking about Una in the last quote, showing how she doesn't see this as much different the underworld deals she made in the past that she usually kept Una in the dark on.

So things start to fall apart, and Morgan, who knows nothing of Cerys past, is left without understanding why.

Are you stalking my brain?
You read me/my characters so easily.

No I think we just think alike in certain aspects.

I don't think I have ever been nearly as effective at analyzing things in quest as I have with this one.

I half way think of you as an English version of me :V

You know, except for the fact that you are better at story writing and can actually consistently write a story without it dying within three to four chapters :V

(really is to bad people took the hardest difficulty in Kasen quest by choosing MGLN and then I never actually got to getting to the fun parts :V )

she should have all the info she needs to figure out what's going on, even if she hasn't at the moment. Usually when an older sibling is acting like a parent something has gone wrong, and with the sudden 180 form friendly if weary to super suspicious we may as well be waving around a glowing sigh that says "trust issues being poked." The fact that we got super suspicious around someone we saw as an authority rather than a peer is hinting at the shape of the issue being poked. Morgan so far has seemed to be pretty clever, she's likely going to figure out we don't react well to authority figures and may even be able to make guesses as to what that implies.

A much better explanation than my... what? 200 word post following the update where we first were going to meet Karen. :V

I suck at realizing people don't see everything I do, although I attempt to point out the basics just in case.

Anyway, I think while Morgan is, as I put earlier, quietly going "wtf?" Karen actually was able to read us quite well. While we didn't react to her, that reaction in and of itself says a lot about a thirteen year old girl. I think she let her mafia boss side out a bit more than she was going to because we were reacting like we expected that. Street-rats are everywhere.

Cerys was... dreaming I think. Demons, magic, Spirit!Bro, and even Morgan... the only thing that probably even kept her grounded were her sister, being in pain, and the military hunting her. Which isn't small, so she was fairly grounded all told, just... most of what Morgan saw and interacted with was a Cerys that was kind of in lala-land. Not that everything was a dream, more that there was a... glossing over, or... cloudiness to everything for her that people usually associate with dreams.

And then she met Karen and that firmly grounded magic itself in something she's very familiar with.

Of course she was half-expecting this I think, Cerys is nothing if not distrustful of the world "Hi other shoe about to drop, how are you today?" So when it did happen she just rolled with it as usual instead of being left floundering.

And she ended up in the one thing she's been very firmly avoiding for years on end now, joining a gang.

Cerys is probably going to beat herself up quite a bit.

I don't see her being... as friendly with Morgan anymore either. Even if it's not fair Morgan was... the... gateway? The first? She was... a lot to Cerys, but meeting her ultimately led Cerys here. And I don't think she'll be able to not feel at least a little bitter about that.

Or grieving over it maybe. Because it was an amazing, wonderful dream for her while it lasted and it centered around Morgan. And Morgan ended it as well basically. Or was... the face of it ending?

Halp, words. *Sigh*

Edit: Morgan was probably the first person her own age Cerys has ever liked. And, at least a little bit to Cerys' own eyes, Morgan was also to one who brutally murdered the dream they met each other in.

I wasn't expecting to write all of this either, go figure.

Of course she might be able to piece it together eventually but:

She lets out one of her little hums as she watches you carefully peel back the last of the beavers skin, leaving it's muscles completely exposed. "I've been travelling all my life, my parents had me on the move and when I was old enough, I set out on my own. I've only been on my own for... three? Yeah, three years or so now. A little older than you when I started." Mmm

oing? Is it ok for you to just... run off with us like this?"

"Not really. Our family doesn't have a house or anything and I don't have any responsibilities. It's freeing, being able to just go wherever you want without having to worry about anything." She stretches afterwards and lets out a satisfied sigh. "You are somewhat similar yeah?"

"Yes, I guess you could say that." It's not really something you want to talk about.
She didn't really seem to think them being without anyone else is odd.

She has been off on her own since around Cerys age traveling and thought that Cerys was somewhat similar to Morgan's own family situation with them being explorers.

She has been equating Cerys and Una being alone traveling to how she herself was on her own travelling at Cerys age.

The second quote was even after Cerys admitted the chapter before that she hasn't hunted in the wild.

Morgan's common sense ran into the problem of her family being uncommon and made assumptions that were wrong and that Cerys agreed with because she didn't want to get into explaining anything about her past.

Hence, Morgan hadn't really had the opportunity to realize things by now despite the signs having been there.

Cerys just didn't want to stop dreaming, so no need to bring the real world in. She can have a few days like this, right? A few days being a kinda-not-really-at-all normal girl, right? A few days with just someone she might kinda-sorta want to trust, right?

... A few days with a maybe-could-be-friend-eventually, right?

... Right?

... Please?

Sadly a dream is far too ephemeral to last for nearly so long.

It is time to wake up, Cerys.

Perhaps in the harsh reality that remains you can find that spark of hope.

Someone worth believing in?

Or perhaps did you leave the one worth your faith, vast, enduring, and protecting, over something so ephemeral?

We shall meet again one day oh spirit

Take heart though.

A shattered dream can be reforged in reality, even if its light fades, and loses it gleam.

No longer perfect, but long lasting because of perfection's lack.

It'll still be a painful transition. And that intermediary stage is now. Like I noted, Cerys... almost needs to grieve right now.

Well hopefully we won't be sent out too soon.

We need to train anyways.

Hey, at least now.... I guess we get a little stability. And more importantly Una gets a little stability.

And more importantly Una gets a little stability.
99% of the reason Cerys went along with this at all probably.

Cerys has basically learned to live in a state of "Backed into a corner" or only few steps away from being such anyway, primarily by keeping Una out of immediate reach.

So Cerys has learned to live in a state of "animal (nearly) backed into a corner with young." And then remember the average human mother will literally flip a car to rescue her child from under it.

Or, as it relates to this, Everything for Una.

The downside of course being that Cerys doesn't really have any other mindsets to use.

I am... also distinctly reminded of the Older Sister description/snippet from the first post of Avalanche's quest.
