Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Okay.
I think we are set; I am out of questions and we probably know everything we need.

I don't want to be an attack dog, but I'm ok with killing things that have it coming or need to die, and I think we have enough bargaining power to ask for this.

Well yeah

Just because we were always going to sa yes doesn't mean we won't pump our new boss for every bit of information we can get out of her

Best to go into these things knowing what to expect

-[X] I accept.

How the hell did I miss three updates though?

I doubt we would get a veto, though.
Besides of that... if there actually is a target we do not want to destroy, we can just say no.

You should always ask questions when speaking to a prospective employer.

Also, I get the feeling that Karen was measuring us there; she tried to find out what kind of person we are exactly as much as we tried to find out more about her and what her game is.
I think those questions were all important and well chosen; she should have gotten a good first impression of us.

she's getting the equivalent of a WMD for the cost of living of two teenagers. she can put up with that WMD being a bit more selective than she'd like. Besides, she was likely going to avoid sending us after targets we would object to on principle, this just makes it formal.

we both know if she sent us after someone we really did not want to kill we would balk. this just lets us say no to a target in a way that lets everyone save face and lets us keep working for her. Ground rules like this mean we avoid the arc where we come to blows because we spared a target.

I think that Karen knows well enough from the personality profile from Morgan, and from common sense, that we wouldn't have agreed to fly half way across the world to meet with the head of a magical community, if we weren't already seriously considering working for her.

In a sense that Morgan was able to lead us to her so easily was already a sign of willingness to work for the right conditions.

And again: I like how sly Morgan is :V

Starts with saying that she wants to follow us but ends up leading us to a destination she wanted us to go without any complaint or hesitation on Cerys part.

Though rather than slyness that might just be because voters were like "oh a actual character outside of the spirit of the land or Una to interact with!" and bit on her bait :V

I'm not sure if we could get a formal veto in the agreement. Karen allowing for that is just asking for her chain-of-command to be undermined and blown up. What we can ask for, and probably get, is an agreement that the Clocktower share everything they know about a target and related topics. Not just what they think we need to know. It's a bit of a stretch, but I think we could pull it off.

She's never going to send you to do anything 'bad' that she couldn't send someone else to do.
100% have to kill a baby before they turn into literally Satan?
She'll send a trusted Enforcer to do it, why have you do it?

However.
100% have to kill another MG that only you can kill?
She'll send you.

You are not a 'solve every problem' button. You are the NUCLEAR OPTION

I was waiting for someone to notice.

Might also ask how they feel about mind control, benign or otherwise.

I mean, mind-controlling Cerys into working for them is totally for her own good, right? :p

On the other hand, what else should we have done?
Our only other option was "go over the border and just make things up as you go". I mean... sure, she might have played us... but that does not have to be a bad thing.
Cerys is beyond good and evil in this case; she would literally work with anyone who gives her the means to protect Una properly.

So basically, Karen uses us to get malicious influences removed and we use her to make our sister happy.
Win-Win.

Or did I miss a memo somewhere?

There are limits, we already noticably pushed them here:

You cast a glance to your sister out of the corner of your eye, she was sitting bolt straight and her eyes were glued on Karen. She still held you tightly. I'm sorry for getting you involved with my mess. "My sister has the same benefits?"

Morgan looks like you struck her physically with that statement. "Yes. She will always be safe here, whether you choose to stay or go." Karen smiles a little tightly. "We're not heartless."

You dip your head slightly, but don't say anything either way. "As I am right now, I am almost as vulnerable as a normal human. How often would I be expected to take to the field?"

Karen lets out a little huff. "Very few Magical Girls start out tough enough to ignore normal weaponry, you will grow. I'm not unreasonable, you won't be sent into a suicidal situation unless it is an end of the world scenario."

Implying that they wouldn't provide for our sister and that we'd be sent into suicidal missions at a drop of a hat, showing that we expect little actual good will from them.

There needs to be some trust between employer and employee, and we are already stressing that relationship by showing how little we trust them.

If they were going to go into mind control this conversation wouldn't even have happened and the benefits wouldn't really exist.

Karen is a person who is willing to make hard decisions, yes, but she isn't going to mind control us to keep us when she had already revealed she was fine letting us go if we didn't want to work for her because she doesn't want bad blood between us.

On the other hand, what else should we have done?

Never said being sly was a bad thing, never even meant to imply the situation was a bad thing, just thought that how what she said and how things played out was interesting.

she is good at her job, and I believe that a lot of the friendliness is genuine.

That said, we totally could have stayed in Canada, Morgan would have stayed for a while at the very least, to observe and try to subtly convince us to go to Europe, and we could have actually worked on using magic to commune with the spirit. The connection is fuzzy, yes, but that doesn't mean we couldn't work on magic specifically to make it clear, and the ability to talk to spirits from anywhere they reside and not just specific points could only be useful later. Just working to make such clear communications from a point that normally doesn't allow it would have taken time that we didn't have before crossing the border, and then we immediately left as soon as we set the forest on fire once we were across the border.

From there we could have done multiple things, tasks from the spirit of the land, Make our place as a MG that talks and does favours for spirits, start up a magical community in Canada, making our place in a new country, or many other things.

We followed a plot-hook but it definitely wasn't the only thing we could have done.
