Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Happy days everyone, chapter is approved, just.
At least I know where the line lay in the future.

It's back up.

To be fair on the matter, I did tell you I would not let something like this happen again either way.
This one was fine to me mostly because it has a few semi-important details to showcase the development of Cerys' character.

Okay then, now that the Update is up properly, it is time to decide... huh... the vote is for what Una wants, not what Cerys suggests. So everything is viable.

Well... I am kind of commited for Infinite Engine now; it would be pretty bad if Cerys had A&O unavailable during the next mission.
Plus, the second one is something I have been wanting to do for ages.
Scratch that last one, I changed it for something else.

I wonder if Una has an Engine variant accessible we could hook up the Engine to.

Once it stops melting people.

Bandwagon Ho!

Vote locked.

I think that was brought up some 150 pages ago, maybe even earlier. Main problem with it is that Cerys lacks the basic understanding of the matter; she has had basically no education for her age. Anime might supplement some of this over time, but I doubt she would ever notice that particular thing as something she can potentially do.

Aside from the fact that she would likely be unable to actually control what the wind she creates does.

Actually, since then:

You carefully watch Una's face as she stares upwards, delicately guiding a falling snowflake with tiny thermals so that it lands gently on her nose.

She has proven some capacity to control wind.

Obviously not huge gusts, but this alone is enough to prove that she knows it is possible, and didn't fail her first, albeit small, attempt.

Since the training vote has been locked, I'll elaborate on how controlling Juggernaut Wave is going to go.

Juggernaut Wave Control
Every 5 levels you lose control over Juggernaut Wave, resulting in a 0/2 training cost.
Every 5 levels over the initial five doubles the gains, meaning that levelling up 10 times without training incurs a 0/6 training cost and so on.

You can find this in the Manual if you need a reminder.
(As a 'We've nerfed it a ton' bonus, you don't incur the additional costs for this training session, meaning it starts at 1/4 rather than 1/6)

Good point, though I would reckon that such things as storms are far, far up the ladder from there. At least... if Cerys actually wants to control them somewhat.

Plus, she is not immune to the wind herself; making anything particularly strong ought to injure her, too.

Yeah, presumably it would take a long time to get it combat viable.

Just pointing out that Cerys does know the basics, enough to eventually build off from practice.

Ultimately I imagine it is a matter of how much time people wish to spend trying to make it viable.

It could be a useful trick for situations where thermal damage doesn't do anything, but only after a lot of practice is put into making it viable.

While that is true, I believe putting work into Unlimited Blades aka abusing our swords Limitless and Levitate ability to be a more practical alternative.

Does this happen even if those 5 levels are gained via usage instead of EXP?

OMEGA
Your sister doesn't even stop to think for a moment. "Teach me how to fly!"

You ruffle her hair with your chin, squeezing her in a hug before standing up and setting her on the ground. "Alright then, just so long as you don't go higher than you can jump." She crouches down and you feel a tinge of magic. "No reinforcement." She pouts, but jumps as high as she can go, curling up her knees for every little bit of extra height. About chest height, maybe head? That seems safe enough. "Alright, first move your magic like so." She leans close to you as you start circulating magic, gently floating off of the ground. You watch her, not really able to properly explain how you are doing it, so letting her figure it out herself it is.

You float back a dozen metres, sitting against a rock as you watch her wobble upwards slightly before dropping back to her feet, a sparkle in her eye. Crossing your legs, you glance around, making sure you are well away from anything you might regret melting. Like my sister. Focusing inwards, you look at the tightly bundled mass of chains, your barrier nibbling at them ineffectually. Oh, that's bad. You need to deal with this before it actually starts making progress.

Collapsing the barrier, you reform it, making sure to keep a tight grip on it as you look at it.

(Cerys: 29 + 15 Magic Control = 44
Infinite Engine: Barely 4/4)

The sting from it trying to eat at you feels less this time, you crush the barrier and reform it, the foreboding feeling dimming a little each time. Huh? Thats... weird. Really weird. You slide the chains off a little, more when your barrier doesn't immediately try and escape your control again. It feels... You smush the barrier a little, blinking at the... [Pout] What the fuck? You let go of it, your barrier settling down in it's place, happily cycling your magic like you wanted it to. What.

The last of the chains recede into your fire and your barrier doesn't react, just sitting there, like it should. [Comfy] What. You slowly stand up, walking towards Gaia, who was looking at you with wide eyes. Pointing at your chest, you stare down at her. "Help."

She flounders for a second, mouth agape as she stares through you. Finally reacting, she scoots backwards a little. "A little distance, like I said, I like this body." You step back, crossing your arms as you ignore the warmness of your own magic feeding back into you. [Smug] Shush. The chains of your fire rattle a little, but nothing else. Mother makes a humming noise, shuffling as far back in her chair as she can. "Now what have you done." One of the hairs on your head crackles, standing on end and you push it back down, hissing at the little shock. Mother giggles, but keeps looking at you, the feeling of her settling on your shoulders.

You shift a little as she inspects you, making a tutting noise as you feel her prod your barrier with your magic, making sure to keep herself away from it. Next she tugs on the chains binding your fire with a hum, sitting up in her chair as her herness moves away from you. "Now Cerys, what have you been doing." She mutters something under her breath as crosses her legs, looking at you with excited eyes. "Oh my, now how did you do that..." You wait for her to explain, but she just hums, waving a hand down. "In a second." Feeling somewhat uncomfortable standing there, you nonetheless endure her probing eyes.

When she finally lets out a long ahhhhh, you bite your lip as she moves to explain. "Well, I'm just going to say I have no clue how you did this. But it's really cute." She sighs and finally answers you unasked questions. "Your affinities are Beginning and End, and they are represented by your control over temperature and what you call your barrier." She waits for you to nod. "Your Fire as you call it is the actual representation of your Beginning affinity, and what would it be if it didn't have a Beginning? On the other hand, your barrier is the consequences of your End affinity, not the actual thing. The End doesn't have a representation, it just is."

Umm. She sighs again, but her excited smile doesn't shrink, eyes glittering. "I'll put it simply, somehow you have managed to create a manifestation of the End, and give it a Beginning." The impossibly smug look on her face is only mirrored by the one in your chest. You just stare at her, not really understanding what was so important, but gathering that it was. "I guess you wouldn't..." Sighing, again. "Don't worry about it, just don't do anything stupid with your barrier, like try to eat it or something." She picks up the book she was reading, going back to ignoring you as she does.

Umm. You look at the suspiciously familiar foreign squiggles and turn around, leaving her to her manga. I'm just... going to ignore this. [Happy] Be quiet you, I'm not dealing with this right now. Walking back to your sister, you smile as you see her shakily moving, her attention strained by trying to float and move at the same time. You push off with a bounce, ruffling her hair as you rest next to her. She spins around to look at you, literally glowing slightly as she pushes her head into your hand. "I'm flyiiiiiing." She slowly floats over you, doing little loops around you. "Flyiiiiiiiiiing." You chuckle as she loops again, her path becoming smoother and smooth as she goes.

Catching sight of Sabina out of the corner or your eyes, you turn to look, amused at the sight of her puffed cheeks as she stares. Noticing your eyes, she blushes, flashing away somewhere. Your sister stopped orbiting you in the brief moment, and was currently floating slowly towards Gaia, spinning in the air as she giggles constantly. I'm sure she can't get up to that much trouble with her. You cross your fingers as you set yourself down, moving towards an empty part of the room. Alright, next up, control.

You raise a hand, transformation flashing down it and up your body without prompting as your magic soars. I'll never get tired of this. Feeling your magic running through your body at full force was always a rush, even if your Engine seemed to be hungrily devouring it's fair share. It should be fine, it's just the one shot. You don't summon your sword, the additional power that casting through it gives you would just make this harder. Alright. A long exhale is followed by a cracking noise as you keep the spell contained in your hands, the not-weight of it digging your feet into the stone beneath you.

(Juggernaut Wave Control: 2/4)

Careful, careful. You cut the magic down a little, as much as you can without collapsing the spell. Controlled, refine it. You do your best to make the casting as clean as you can, rather than a rushed combat job. Gather the magic, compress and refine, then fire. You let the spell fire, the wall of magic rushing towards the wall at maybe half of its usual speed.

It still obliterates a massive chunk of it, but the foot thick wall is still standing, rather than trying it's best to reach the stratosphere. You pant a little as you stretch your arms, trying to rub out the pins and needles. That, was much harder than I thought it would be. You had done it, but it was by no means 'under control'. Way too slow to use in a fight. You raise your hand to cast again when your sister glomps you from behind, wrapping her entire body around your back. Ack. You only stumble slightly, letting your magic fade as you look up at your sister.

"What are you doing?" She just giggles as she shimmies up your back, resting her legs on your shoulders and hugging your head. "Is this a thing now?" She nods happily and you sigh, giving up hope on any more training today. "Well alright, we've been at this for a few hours." You walk back towards Gaia, Una bouncing with every step as your transformation fades. When you get there, she just lowers her Manga, letting you have the smallest view of a panel. A panel of a little sister riding her older sister's shoulders. Goddamit Mother, why do you do this to me?

She just smiles at you, lazing in her recliner as the rest of the room slowly gathers around you. I guess we're done for the day then? In response to your thoughts, you suddenly find yourself back in your house, standing by the sink. I'll take that as a yes. Crouching down, you let Una float off of your back, where she proceeds to begin slowly moving around the room. "Don't break anything." She calls back with a 'Okay' and goes on in her merry adventure of bumping into as many things as physically possible while crawling along the ceiling upside down. She's gonna break something.

You look to the side when you feel a hand on your shoulder, a glass of water held in the outstretched hand of your girlfriend. That is still weird to think but amazing at the same time. Taking it with a smile and muttered thanks, you lean against the counter as you watch your sister float aimlessly, snorting when Sabina starts nudging her around the room with the pole of a broom. Like an enormous floating cat. [Kitty] Still not dealing with you. [Neko?] Your face drops into your hand and you feel a distant sense of smugness from your mother. Why me? Una would love this.

You spend roughly half a second considering your sister with a possibly Anime and Manga obsessed voice in her head. Wouldn't that just be her own internal commentary? [Interest] No. Putting the thought out of your mind as best as you can, you down the rest of the glass and put it in the sink. Turning to Gaia, your stomach rumbles and you pause. "What's for dinner?" Una even stops her aimless bouncing as you wait for your answer.

Smiling brightly, she bounces on her toes and lifts her arms to the sky. "Takeout night!"
