Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

The only reason I can see for practicing controlling the air with Thermal Control would be so Cerys could maybe stop a hurricane, not try to create one.

Eh, I was thinking more in case we had to fight a mage that uses Wind or Weather magic.
If we are ever in a situation where we're fighting a weather/wind specialist and have to rely on our Shitty Chinese Knockoff temperature-based version to counter them, we're fucked. Flat out.

DINNER FOR KNEIGHT
Rather abruptly finding yourself on the sidewalk of a street, thick crowds moving around you like a wall, sister pressed tightly against your side. [Surprise] "Where the fu-" You blink as you find yourself standing somewhere else, the streets much less busy, much more tanned or dark skin on display by the people reacting to your sudden appearance. "-ck." Your mouth clicks closed as you look around, the rest of your group around you in a rough circle. "What?"

Leaning towards you, Gaia slides a hand over your shoulder and brushes off a wispy netting of magic you somehow hadn't noticed, despite the fact it was glowing green. "Looks like a certain someone was looking forwards to talking to you in person." One of the bystanders turn and starts running, shouting as loud as he could about the end of the world. Mother just sighs, ignoring him as she steps back. "It will take her a few minutes to get here, why don't we go ahead and order?"

You follow her into the building after glancing around at the shocked pedestrians, speeding up your movement when you notice an Asian man kneeling and praying in your direction. It feels... odd. Glancing back, you squint your eyes, just barely noticing a very slight shimmer of magic wafting off of him. Huh. Your party moves through the quiet building, the few customers only glancing at you before turning back to their meals. This place is very... Chinese. There was wood on every surface, little nettings and symbols carved into the wood in flowing patterns, sitting proudly in the corner of the room was a small statute of a sitting man with very large ears. Buddha? [Amusement] What? [Amusement] Fine, keep it to yourself.

Looking forwards when you hear a throat clearing, a plain looking Chinese woman smiles widely at you, a quick glance at your own Chinese companions easing a little stiffness in her shoulders. "Hello, how may I serve you today?" She's doing an admirable job of keeping calm, though you don't actually know why she should be nervous, a quick glance at Gaia gives you nothing. [Fear]

Mother doesn't even look back at your group as she orders for each of you, quickly saying something in a foreign tongue, the speed making it difficult to parse as Chinese for a moment. The hostess blinks, before quickly speaking back to her in her own language, the two of them going through a rapid conversation which has your girlfriend humming. Shuffling over, you lean down to her and whisper. "What are they talking about?"

"Nothing much, just what is on the menu mostly." Oh. You move back, a little disappointed at the normality. I guess it is just a food place. Leaning against a wooden pillar next to you, the sight of people whispering and pointing at you catches your eye. When you look over, they pale, refusing to meet your eyes. What is this about? A quick glance at the door spies you several people who were quickly leaving, carefully avoiding your gaze as best they can while they shuffle out of sight.

The desperate calmness some of them move with makes your hackles raise, pushing off of the pillar you gently pull Una to your side, turning the two of you so that the wall is behind you, the patrons all in your line of sight. Some who were just beginning to leave their seats drop back down, trying their best to avoid your gaze. "Mother." A couple flinches at your voice, pulling their child further out of your sight as they sit taller. "What is this?"

She speaks over her shoulder as you hear the clinking of spare change, then the register opening. "Your face is currently home to the position of public enemy number... three? I believe that it is three. The current suggestion upon sighting you is to calmly leave the area and call the police." She kindly gives you the chance to blink before continuing. "Really, her determination to not be the first side to unveil magic is astounding, despite relaxing her own laws against it."

Looking back at the frightened patrons in a new light, you roughly clear your throat, waiting for their flinches to die down as you walk to the middle of the ordering area. "Alright, regardless of whatever has been put on my wanted poster, I'm not here to start trouble tonight." You give them a second to parse your words. "You are going to sit there and enjoy your meals, then you are going to go home and enjoy the rest of your long and productive lives." You turn back to your group, ignoring the rest of the room, if there was someone dangerous Mother would tell you. [AMUSEMENT]

A poke on your forehead makes you blink, knowing that Mother did it despite not having moved. "Don't be so reliant." She turns around, ushering your group off to one side of the room. "Our orders are being finished post haste." Sitting down at the table with a quiet grumble, you shuffle over to make space, letting your sister clamber over your lap to sit on the inside while Daiyu takes your other side. In short order, a beautiful woman comes out from the back, carrying two large trays. "There we go."

Setting them down smoothly, the woman quickly retraces her steps, bringing another tray of food. When she is done, she favours your table a quick bow, before making off towards the backroom as fast as is polite. A loud snort comes from the other side of the table. "Thy hospitality is left wanting, but not thy cooking." The armoured Knight has already taken a bite out of a large piece of meat, a little bit of sauce smeared across his faceplate tickling your sense of humour. Una ate cleaner when she was a baby. Only Gaia smiles when you start laughing quietly to yourself, taking a bite of the sweet meat inbetween giggles. [Hunger] I can't feed you. [Disappointment]

Your laughter is cut short by a new arrival, feeling her before you see her, the door opens with a slight jingle as a familiar face steps through. The patrons look relieved for a moment, before seeing that it isn't the police, just a short blond girl wearing a hoodie. You can visibly see them fighting the urge to warn her away, but your heavy gaze keeps them quiet as she approaches your table. The two of you stare each other down, before she pulls a chair from another table and seats herself on the outside.

Opening your mouth, she cuts over you gently. "I'm not here to cause trouble, not today." Finishing chewing your mouthful of duck, you wash it down with a quick swig of water as her eyes move over your group. You are slightly amused by the brief pause she makes when looking at Knight-san, little bits of sweet and sour sauce dripping from his helmet and onto his chestpiece. Pulling the third tray towards her, she nibbles a bit of rice, sighing when you just continue staring at her. "This is a little awkward isn't it?" Your continued stare answers for you and she looks towards Mother. "Gaia, could you please stop, just for this conversation?"

Mother hums, but nods, though she doesn't seem to do anything. Karen on the other hand, slumps down in her seat with a relieved sigh, closing her eyes in what looks like exhaustion. "Ahhhh, that's better, it's been such a long time." An unfamiliar smile grows on her face, a hint on genuine joy as she takes a mouthful of food. "Mmm, if you weren't such a treacherous bitch I'd be almost tempted to join you."

The hairs on the back of your neck raise as a growl builds in your chest, but Mother just laughs lightly. "You are no better yourself young lady, I hardly even need to push you at all, this was entirely your own doing."

Karen scoffs, licking a stray piece of rice off of her lips with a quick flick. "I would never have started this war if not for you, my own goals were progressing nicely by staying in the shadows as I was." She sighs, stretching her arms above her head before taking sip of her drink, idly flicking your sisters thieving fingers away from her duck. "But, I guess what is done is done, nothing for it now."

"Indeed." The sense of familiarity, despite being certain the two of them have never met is unnerving. "Come Cerys, don't let your meal go cold." Reluctantly turning your eyes away from your guest, you take another bite of your duck, licking a bit of glazing off of your lips before it drips. "Even so, you believe that you are going to win?"

Karen waits until she has finished her mouthful, sarcastic smirk on her face. "Oh, certainly. Not that you would let that happen though." The two of them laugh at their own joke, whatever it was flying straight over your head and leaving you feeling slightly awkward. "Mmm, actually. In the future, could you please give me a little warning you are going to balance the war out again? I actually had some important staff there, replacing them will prove fairly difficult."

Gaia lets out a long humming noise. "Perhaps, I will take it under consideration." [Doubt]

Karen laughs freely, the happy noise sounding wrong coming from her. "Yes, I suppose that's the best I'm going to get from you." She turns back to her meal with a small smile, pleased hums coming from her with each bite. You are almost tempted to interrupt her, but you go back to eating your meal, working through the plate in silence. Only when the plates are empty, a refill for your drinks completed, did your thoughts turn back to your unwelcome guest. The sight of her actually happy and carefree was... wrong, it was just so not her that it was difficult to connect your anger at Karen the leader of the Clocktower to Karen the smiling blond midget.

Sabina helpfully sums up your thoughts for you. "Hey, didn't really know you all that well, but weren't you kind of a bitch? What's got you in such a good mood considering we demolished your front line?"

Karen leans back in her seat, patting her stomach, a tiny burp escaping her mouth before she covers it with a giggle. "Why am I in a good mood?" She sits up straight. "For the first time in over a decade, your Mother has finally stopped poking at my thoughts, I've just had a delicious meal and this seat is very comfortable." She wiggles in it a little, propping one of her arms on the rest. "What reason don't I have to be happy?" 「 」

You grunt. "Us destroying your operating base, me trashing the Clocktower itself, me leaving with all of us?"

Her good mood only fades a little bit and she points a finger upwards. "I'm not bothered by the base, I was well aware that Gaia would do something to even the playing fields, I expect this war to last a good few years, maybe a decade." Another finger. "I am slightly miffed at that, it was a pain to repair you know? But nothing of value was lost, it even gave me a convenient excuse to put the blame on the Illuminati's puppets." A third finger. "You leaving was entirely my own fault, well." She looks at Mother out of the corner of her eye. "Mostly my fault, the loss of combat capacity really is felt and I'm sad we parted on such bad terms, but you can't change the past."

Mother takes a sip of her drink. "Well said, I've always been impressed by your attitude really. I don't care for your goals, but the work and intensity you put towards reaching them is admirable."

Karen's smile brightens a little in response. "Why, I think this might have been the greatest compliment I've been given in my life." She energeticly bounces in her seat, acting more like the teenager she looks, than a person of her age. The two of them share a small laugh again and this time it is Cuifen that speaks what you are thinking.

"Why do you act as friends, when you seem to be enemies?" Of your group, you were pretty sure your girlfriend's sister was the one who understood Karen's actions the most, not sharing the same anger you did. "It is confusing." [Tsun?] Pff, shush.

"In the grand scheme of things." Karen takes a familiar lecturing pose, and despite yourself you lean forwards slightly to listen. "We aren't really enemies. We may disagree on the end result, or the path to get there, but we both want the same thing." Mother coughs and Karen corrects herself. "Alright, mostly the same thing. My desires are completely selfish, but I have no particular adversity to making other peoples lives better along the way." She sighs a little sadly. "I cannot achieve my goal, because if I did then I would defeat the purpose of it. Bringing someone back from the dead when they don't want you to is entirely pointless."

Mother actually reaches over and pats her on the head, the familiar motion for her making something ugly curl in your chest. That something is quickly interrupted when her other hand moves over to you, scratching juuust right. "There there dear, you know that when you die you'll meet her again." Her hand pulls back from Karen's head, cupping her much smaller hand on the table. "She's waiting for you."

A single tear runs down Karen's face, not at all tainting the small smile on her lips. "Of course she is, I never believed otherwise." You look at the rest of the room, away from her, feeling distinctly like you are intruding on something deeply personal. "I can't join her just yet, she would be ashamed with me, as she should be." A long sigh pierces the relatively silent room. "I'll do my part in your war, then I'll find whatever lies beyond and finish that too." Her lips raise on her smile, showing just a flash of teeth. "I refuse to die until she's proud of me." 「 」What, is that?

Mother doesn't comment on that, she just smiles and pulls her hands back, setting them in her own lap as you hear the distant wails of sirens, a collective feeling of relief emanating from the rest of the room.

"Mother, shouldn't we go?" She stops scratching, and nods, releasing you to your disappointment. You idly start stroking your sisters head when she lies down on your lap, making content noises as she looks ready to burst from eating so much.

She just waves her hand. "We'll be gone before they get here." She stands and walks towards the counter, where the cashier had been standing in quiet terror the entire time. They exchange words in rapid Chinese again, a glance at Daiyu prompting her to translate for you. "She is giving a tip for the excellent service, but would like to lodge a complaint against the other customers for excessive staring." She giggles slightly before continuing as the cashier blanches. "She has offered her compliments and promised to come back in the future."

You can't resist a short chuckle at that, glancing to the side when you hear a chair scrape, Karen doing her hoodie back up as she steps away from the table. "I guess that is my cue to leave." She gives you a smile as she steps back. "It was nice seeing you again Cerys, I'll be sure to let Morgan knows you are in good health, she's been very busy." She turns to leave but you manage to call out before she reaches the door.

"Just, tell her I said I'm sorry, alright?" [Sad] I know. [Sad][Happy] You smile at the cold warmth. Thank you.

She sends you a warm smile. "She knows, and when you next see her, I suspect that you will be even more sorry." She turns away, pausing in the doorway in a blatant display of dramatics as she looks over her shoulder. "She always was the most possessive girl." You catch a glance to your side, tightening your grip on Daiyu's hand. "See you later." You see a flash of blond hair escape around the door just before it closes with a quiet jingle, leaving you staring at the wood, sirens rapidly growing louder now.

Mother moves back to your table, leaning against a wooden pillar as she looks amusedly at the still moving bell on the door. "Such a talent for dramatics, but her skill there is well earned." She turns to you, ignoring the sound of cars pulling up outside. "Why, did you know that she spent three years as a student at a drama and acting course? By the end, she was coaching the teachers." A muffled boom sounds out as the door is blown off it's hinges, a riot shield pushing through the smoke. "Always such a clever girl."

You forcibly still yourself when a gun is aimed at Mother, letting her smile sweetly at the soldier. You blink and you are back on the sofa at home, Una not having moved from your lap, though the rigid lines of tension down her back tell you she was more than aware of the situation. Quietly running your hands down her spine, you gently press in, feeling her tightly wound muscles relaxing as she peers around your living room. "My." Gaia pulls a can of something out of the fridge, Japanese text printed on it. "How rude, they didn't even knock."

Sabina snorts, pushing off of the wall she found herself leaning against. "Ok, that was kind of awesome." She starts climbing the stairs. "Would have been better if we'd stayed to fight but eh." When she reaches the top, she calls down. "I'm taking a bath, want me to leave the water in?" [Lewd] Haaa, and you were doing so well.

"If you could." You couldn't be assed to run another one today, there had been too many surprises and you just wanted to go to bed.

/LINE BREAK\

The sun was warm this morning, granted, you could only tell because your sister had stolen all of the covers, leaving your bare skin to be warmed by the shafts of light through the window. Uuuuugh. You resist the urge to push her off the bed, instead sitting up and brushing your hair out of your face. I'm going to need to get a separate bed at this rate. Slowly standing up, you pause at the door and look down. Dressed. Need to be dressed. You turn back, fishing out a pair of underwear and pulling on a shirt. Good enough.

"Morning dear." Mother greets you cheerily as you take the final step, a plate of toast waiting for you at the table. Tiredly muttering a thanks, you drop into the chair, stretching your stiff limbs as you heat the chair so it isn't so cold on your bare legs. Mmm, better. A cup of tea is sitting on a mat, a quick burst of power warms it to steaming again. Mmmh, much better. You look up as you continue to eat, Mother quietly talking with Cuifen about something. Guess the others are still asleep.

When you finish the last bit of toast, Mother slides a folder towards you, letting you rub the sleep out of your eyes as you open it. Apart from the fact that the paper was bright pink and dotted with little stars, it looked awfully like a mission dossier that Karen would give you, only there were three of them.

Glancing at the titles, you blink at the cutesy font she's used. Of course. Rubbing your face, you read them. "Operation Defeat Means Friendship." [Interest] No. "Operation Best Friends Forever and Operation Meeting Your Sempai." You look up from the paper, Gaia's gleeful face awaiting you. "What is this?"

"Your missions for today! Pick one."

"No, I mean, apart from the names. What is going on in each mission."

"Hmm, I think I'll stay quiet this time. You should learn how to operate on mission where you don't have any intelligence."

"I don't even know what each one wants me to do."

She nods. "I'll tell you once you decide, I just want you to pick based on the name."

Why are you like this. [Amusement] Don't you start, I get enough of it from her. [Chastisement] Good.

yes I even reread the last bit to check why the voting names were all so interesting.
Well, I guess everyone has their own ways of going about it.

By the way, I would like to mention that I like how actually child-like the little one appears. Obviously inhuman, but still curious and trying to learn like any newborn.
I wonder if Gaia will soon give Cerys a talk about her motherly duties? :V

Unfortunately, Grandma Gaia and/or Auntie Una have already started to corrupt the little thing, what with it already understanding the concept of lewds and Tsun
