Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Hmm... Well, I'm not so much for burning the potentially sentient trees, especially given that we will likely put up a giant flag for anything trying to follow us.

That said, I don't think we should necessarily stay too close either. Let's just... Try to get through the forest quickly.

Instead of investigating the tree without knowing what we're actually doing, maybe we should just ask? It might answer.

We should atleast wait to be completely healed and having read the Survival Guide before leaving the forest.

I'd normally agree, but Light that Shines means that while it might be an alien existence, it's very likely an alien existence who's mindset lends to it being benevolent more often than not.

Instead of investigating the tree without knowing what we're actually doing, maybe we should just ask? Maybe try telepathy on it (though we should be cautious to not be overwhelmed)?
That's basically what we were doing earlier and what I think investigating is meant to do.

Honestly I'm just expecting variations on "I am Forest" though why it's helping us... *Shrug* It might recognize Demons and have felt what went down. I imagine the demonic incursion and our awakening probably created some magical waves. A forest would probably be the most likely entity to pick up our awakening to since we're a Fire elemental and forests have a relationship with fire. A good one at that. At least when it's not made by humans.

[X] Check with the trees again, see if any pursuit is near. If they are, get moving, otherwise finish healing up while in a relatively safe spot.
[X] Investigate
-[X] Try to communicate? Maybe push a sense of thanks towards the forest through the connection from before. It's helped you without being asked, and that's more than you could say for most people.

I like this. Especially the third line.
The forest is alive and apparently benevolent; at least it helped us out here. Maybe we get a breather there, that would be nice.

...
In before the Forest ends up being best supporting character.

@Rukia Do we know how much time has passed since we fled the town? About half a day?

[X] ^veekie

If possible, I suggest staying around the tree atleast until we're fully healed and ready for actual survival in the wild.

*Nods* Forest Bro... *Blinks* Enkidu?

Also, we can start a fire wherever it wants them actually, since humans keep putting out the one's that do start. I imagine The Forest might get irritated about that sometimes.

-[X] How long you might be able to stay? Picture you and Una staying in the clearing, the Forest directing the military away, and then day and night passing by a few times as a question.
-[X] Ask about the animals and why they aren't around.

veekie's with just a small adjustment and another two questions.

Hm... yes, sounds good to me.

Honestly, it says a lot about the setting when the best character we met aside from our protagonists is a forest.
Granted, it is also the only other character we met, but still...

Six or seven hours. You walked a long way.

I'll give you guys a hint.

I think from now on I'll make all of my hints Yoda.

Lol. My first thought after the previous chapter was that for some reason a Gaia-like entity was watching over us. Maybe it is actually the case?

Some entity(ies) might be actively protecting the few magical girls that have started to pop up around the world. Something something protecting its interests.

There's kind of a reason I'm capitalizing Forest when I'm talking about it. I thought she already realized this thing was the entire Forest though? It seemed like she put that together to some degree.

Also 13 year olds just can't really think to abstractly. And I mean they literally just can't think that abstractly, their brains physically can't do it yet. Almost, but not quite.

All of Gaia itself noticing us was my other idea, but I'm not sure she's ready to even try and grasp that the entire fucking planetary spirit is watching her like that.

There are more things upon heaven and earth than Gaia.
A lot more

You know what? We should become the Forest's shrine maiden. We could create a sanctuary for the few magical girls we find in the future!

There is no way it could go wrong!

Joking aside, it could also be some sort of guardian created by someone to make sure only the people who meet a set of conditions can go through this part of the forest.

Heck... Its creator could be a wizard. Nothing suggest magical girls are the only magic practitioner.

Should I just ask a question as to why it helped us straight up you think?

If you wanted to, you could totally become a shrine maiden.
Even this forests shrine maiden.

If you guys vote for it...
(I've been reading Constellations, Worm Fic)

Well we're more akin to a fellow Kami, albeit a minor one currently, wrapped in human flesh than an actual human. On the other hand I'm fairly sure Kami can be Priests/Shrine Maidens for other Kami if they so wish. Or at least Servants. Like kitsune often end up doing when they don't go bad.

Also, good taste. Constellations is very good.

Hate to harp on this, but that background explanation still breaks my sod rather severely. You have a 10 and 6 year old travelling alone across the country and doing odd jobs for gangs? And they manage this for 4 years?

Sure abused kids have heightened maturity levels, but doing work for a gang involves interacting with adults. Did she wear a big coat and pretend to be older? What is happening here???

Go ahead, I do not mind.

Aside from that, the Shrine Maiden idea does have a certain charme to it. We already know we can basically go for anything... maybe we should keep this in mind for later?

I'm guessing it's the like of running packages and messages. Small jobs you could conceivably see a kid doing.

Eh, maybe. I'm more up for punching evil in the face with flaming fists of flame. Or some humans. Light that Shines probably doesn't cover everything.

We're a long way from there. The MC is certainly not mentally stable enough to go heroing. We still need to stabilise our current circumstances until we can practice regularly.

Indeed, you did small odd jobs using your natural cute appearance to slip by. Running notes past guards who wouldn't search a child because why would they.
Little things like that and the occasional larger job. Nothing major usually. Cerys wanted to avoid that as much as she could, and never got Una involved at all.

You can try this later if you want.
Japan is going to be very important later on down the line, you'll probably end up visiting. You might want to stay.

Seeing as magic is formed by what people think is possible and Japan is basically the primary exporter of Anime. Which is basically magic, with a great deal of them being "you can do anything if you try". Which would be a very good thing for the entire world to believe. Since then MG's could do anything if they try.
