Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

The sole practical use for Ice Sphere, or rather possible derivative ice abilities that I see is battlefield control. Bringing ice walls out of nothingness to control and corral enemies into situations that favor us (or just freezing them in place) has the potential to be very potent. On the other hand, going for a battlefield control style of combat means we'd have lesser DPS at this time. So it'd be a trade off for now. Later, after Cerys is a fairly competent swordsman and mage, I will definitely want to experiment and train with such for the flexibility that battlefield control will add to Cerys's repertoire since training will have hit diminishing returns by that point.

As far as I'm concerned, Ice Sphere as it stands doesn't need to be on our sheet. Do make a note that it's something we can do though for the sake of SCIENCE! later.

So noted.
Although we have to keep in mind that Thermal Control uses the water from within the air to create ice; larger structures might not be possible.

Seconded.

There is no point in already making builds when Cerys is a scrub at everything and we don't even know everything we can do. For example, there was only 1 action dedicated to Infinity Edge and it was only for channeling magic in it. No experiment to see if we can boost its damage with magic or even if swinging it while loaded with magic does anything, neither how it works in conjunction with the auras or if we can create specific effects with it. We might end up or not with an ability like Saber's mana burst ability which would incentivize close combat for example.

Any talk of build should wait until our base stats aren't so pathetic and we have studied and leveled up our core abilities to an acceptable level in order to at least see where they could go. Gaia should have sent a manual along with the powers...

The only thing that we can already say is that Flight and High-speed combat will be in any build since they are just so damn useful and that we will never be a tank, though our defensive abilities might give us something like Judgment Core's Mythril Frame down the line which would be useful.

I am in agreement with the above statement.
Although I just recalled Rukia mentioning that we could theoretically get To Stand Amongst Gods.
(When damage directed at us is higher than 20% of our Maximum Health, the Final End Damage is reduced by 99% [recursive])
(Recursive means the Ability procs every time the conditions are fulfilled, not just once per turn)

So we might be able to be at least an off-tank, should we get something like this. But really only in this case.

TEATIME
When your ride back to base arrived, you just left the room silently. Only the shorter woman looked up, and she just nodded to you before going back to playing with her ring. The ride back was fast, neither you or the driver saying anything to each other. When you arrived, you stepped out and just started walking. Nobody got in your way, they all edged towards the walls as you passed, your magic thrumming harshly in time with your breath. When you turned the corner towards Karen's room, you were greeted by her waving away several people wearing armour.

They looked over to you when you turned the corner, expressions tightening as your magic rumbled, but they backed down when Karen gave them a look. She opened her door and stepped in, tilting her head to look at you over her shoulder. "Come on in, the kettle just finished." You control your expression as you step through the door, letting it close behind you as she wanders off towards her kitchen. When she returns, the two of you settle down on opposing sofas. You are sitting stiffly, clenching your mug tightly as she looks at you, waiting for you to speak.

You take a long drink of the Tea first before you set it down harshly, a tiny crack spreading on one corner of the base. "I, would like you to explain to me, what the fuck that was." Your voice is steady as you speak, but your true feelings were showing in how your magic was fluctuating wildly. It was taking conscious effort to keep the temperature of the room the same, but you were sure that even then Karen had noticed.

She sits silently for a minute as she takes a sip, before sighing and setting her cup down. "That, as you call it, is the truth of the magical world. Humans, for all our civilisation, are still prey. The beasts that lurk in the dark are all too happy to tear us apart." She leans forwards as you let a frown slip. "We did not know, or even expect that something like that could be there. If I had known, I still would have sent you, this is why you are here. But I would have sent you backup, a Scamp of that size is nothing to scoff at."

"And there will be more 'Accidents' in the future like this?" Your mind flashes back to the shorter woman, she had tears trailing down her face as she sat, idly playing with her ring. She didn't even have a body to bury, his had been turned into mulch, the best she could do was bury some red tinted dirt. If you had just known that something like that could be around, it would never have happened. Fuuuuck... I need to learn their names.

Karen nods solemnly. "Yes, there will be. I can give you no guarantee that this won't happen again, all I can do is try to minimize the chances." She pushes a loose lock of hair behind her ear. "Do you understand now, why we need you? Most mages can do nothing to something like that, and they are all to common in the world." Your mind flashes back to the shorter woman's final attack. It was strong, her strongest, and it had done nothing. It hadn't even charred its outer layers. "Magical Girls are powerful beyond anything a normal human can hope to reach." She leans forwards a little, clasping her hands. "The world needs you, this is a fight we can't win on our own."

You let out a harsh breath, almost a bitter chuckle, at her words. The world needs me, the world never needed me before. You look at her. She's being honest as best you can tell, but you really don't know if she's telling the truth. Wonder if she practised that in the mirror. Her little speech was... something, you guess. Nothing she had said really mattered to you, so long as your sister was safe-- Oh.... you sneaky little bitch. You squeeze the mug you had just picked up, the crack along the bottom spreading slightly. Kill the monsters to keep your sister safe, otherwise they might get her. You were almost impressed with her, if it wasn't for how she stabbed right into your vulnerabilities.

You close your eyes as you slow your breathing, flicking them open and staring into her icy blue eyes. They were as hard as steel as she stared you down, waiting for your answer. Well, more like waiting for my acceptance. Not like there is any other answer. The feeling of being trapped grated on you, it was only made worse because she was being earnest here, she believed that this was for the best. What was that saying? 'I'll drag you into happiness kicking and screaming if I have to'.

You drink the rest of your mug in a single long swig, before gently putting it on the table before you. You stand and make your way to the door, stopping as you open it. "Tell Morgan when you need me." You walk out of the room, the armoured people, guards probably, were nowhere to be seen. You were still tense as you enter into your room, but you had calmed your magic down enough to be unnoticeable. The sight that greeted you was enough to make you stop in place and stare.

Morgan was leaning against the table, which was laden with food and Una was running about in the back doing something. Morgan jerks upwards in surprise, dropping a piece of paper that floats over to your feet. When you look down, you see that it has a little chibi drawing of you, your sister and Morgan all smiling. When you look up, you see Morgan shifting from foot to foot awkwardly as she stares blushingly at the ground. "Uhh, its..." She mumbles under her breath just loud enough for you to hear. "We thought we'd throw you a party, for your first mission yeah? My parents did it for me."

You see Una running around behind her more clearly now, she putting decorations up on everything, a bright smile on her face as she deposits hand-made paper decorations. She notices you, quickly popping the last little triangle down and running over to you. She hits you in a hug before you can respond, happily tugging you around the room to look at everything as she babbles on. You can see Morgan look at you, but you just shake your head to which she nods, making her way into the kitchen and moving three plates of different types of pasta into the room.

When you sit down, Una's cheerful chatter is impossible to ignore and she ropes Morgan into it as well. An hour later, you are feeling much calmer, it was just impossible to be angry at something when your sister was being so adorable. Morgan was distinctly awkward for the entire meal, she'd obviously heard about what had happened, but thankfully she didn't say anything.

When you were done, you felt the exhaustion from earlier creeping up on you. You'd mostly healed your injuries, but you were tired. When you settle down for an early sleep, Una crawls over to you with a book. You doubt she'll be awake for long, but you appreciate the sentiment, gentle ruffling her hair as you close your eyes. Still, a final thought pervades your mind as you slip into blackness.

Fuck this day.

Saturday...
[] Keep to yourself
[] Read a book
[] Write In...

Turns out I was exhausted because I am sick, so chapters are an entirely vague possibility for the next few days.

Oh boy...
First of all, I hope you get well soon, Rukia. Have some more Hugs.

Secondly, the in-character choice for Cerys would be to not have her train.
On the other hand, she might get motivated by deciding to make sure something like this does not happen again.

By the way, I was thinking again. The current weekend and following week will see us without a place to train dangerous magic; I am not a fan of making a trek to the mountains for that, which would cost time.
Any training can be done during the week... considering we only really play the weekends, we should use those for experiments with new magic and ideas instead.

Now I am torn between just having Cerys read a book, or to do something.

Although... hey, there is one thing I think we should do as fast as possible.

[X] Sleep in and have a late breakfast
-[X] Cuddle with Una for a bit after that... maybe read a book?
[X] Use your afternoon productively; no slacking off when such a fuckup can happen again at any point... but what would help?
-[X] Wait. You have Regeneration... maybe... maybe you can do something with that?
--[X] Go to the gym and try to draw out the magic that heals you; do not be forceful, do not tear... just direct it outside of your body so that you can use it on someone else; you can help no one if you hurt yourself over this
--[X] If this works, go and tell Karen about it; ask her if there is any place where you can practice this new ability
[X] Spend the evening taking a walk outside

Basically, I want us to get a healing power usable on others, be it an aura or a spell.
The additional fluff I put in there is both my own train of thought on why/how this might work... and also an attempt to not get Cerys another splitting headache like she did when she tried forcing her Ignition Aura and A&O.
Even when it does not work, we will probably get some practice with Regeneration due to examining how it flows and what it does.

I would have gone for Spell Boost, but I actually want to implement hitting something with the sword in that vote... which we would need a training area for, which we do not have right now.

Yes, something like that. I would be fine with healing hands as well, though.

Maybe you made a leap in logic there, though... or I was just dense the whole time, but I thought you wanted to change the properties of our Ignition Aura itself... which I doubt is possible.

Ouch.

I'm not sure whether this resentment is something we need to address at some point..

Give it some time before we do anything about it. Cerys has trouble trusting anyone in power at all... and understanding Karen's reasoning without her having to spell it out is... well, at least there are no misconceptions in their relationship.

I am not even sure it is really resentment directed at Karen; it could just as well be for the situation or Cerys herself... the former because everything turned to crap in a matter of minutes and the latter because she is not strong enough to do anything about it.
Cerys should understand that Karen just makes hard decisions because she has to.

Nah. Not really addressable I think. It's an extension of her needing some kind of enemy to square off against.

And what Naron said.

Helplessness is a horrible feeling, and Cerys is probably feeling it a lot right now. And hating herself, the world, and Karen for it.

Doesn't mean she's wrong about Karen though.

I am surprised Cerys blamed Karen for how the mission went to shit though. Hmm... It's hard to tell, because she's probably been betrayed both on purpose and just by circumstance in her jobs for various gangs and mobs before, but... felt a bit out of place.

Does it come across like that?
Because she's not really blaming her, but she's handing some responsibility off to her because she's in charge.

Her feelings are confusing, they confuse me just trying to write them.

Well, Cerys instantly assumes that Karen's point is that Una's in danger from those supposedly rare magical dangers. Sure The World includes Una, but this particular spin on Karen's admittedly bland speech is all Cerys I think.

You do an excellent job of writing Cerys! That sort of reaction seems perfectly in character for her!

Edit: Also voting!

I didn't see it that way or at least not as severe? I saw it as Cerys is mad that on her very first mission someone dropped the ball on recon leading to a nasty surprise and in turn she messed up adding to it. It's like you said Karen is in charge so some of that responsibility should go to her but I didn't see it as blaming. I think.

I don't want to be a somewhat support somewhat dps. We should focus on one thing and that's dps.

First is the expectation for Karen to have known the big one would be there and then the second line she says holds the implication of "accidentally" being pushed off of a cliff. In other words, it feels like Cerys is implying Karen both knew about it and withheld the information on purpose.

Cerys really only cares about Una. Everyone else is just fodder in terms of protecting and caring for Una, save, maybe, Morgan.

Not that she's without empathy, but you make her choose between a building full of people and Una, she'll choose Una in a heartbeat.
