When your ride back to base arrived, you just left the room silently. Only the shorter woman looked up, and she just nodded to you before going back to playing with her ring. The ride back was fast, neither you or the driver saying anything to each other. When you arrived, you stepped out and just started walking. Nobody got in your way, they all edged towards the walls as you passed, your magic thrumming harshly in time with your breath. When you turned the corner towards Karen's room, you were greeted by her waving away several people wearing armour.
They looked over to you when you turned the corner, expressions tightening as your magic rumbled, but they backed down when Karen gave them a look. She opened her door and stepped in, tilting her head to look at you over her shoulder. "Come on in, the kettle just finished." You control your expression as you step through the door, letting it close behind you as she wanders off towards her kitchen. When she returns, the two of you settle down on opposing sofas. You are sitting stiffly, clenching your mug tightly as she looks at you, waiting for you to speak.
You take a long drink of the Tea first before you set it down harshly, a tiny crack spreading on one corner of the base. "I, would like you to explain to me, what the fuck that was." Your voice is steady as you speak, but your true feelings were showing in how your magic was fluctuating wildly. It was taking conscious effort to keep the temperature of the room the same, but you were sure that even then Karen had noticed.
She sits silently for a minute as she takes a sip, before sighing and setting her cup down. "That, as you call it, is the truth of the magical world. Humans, for all our civilisation, are still prey. The beasts that lurk in the dark are all too happy to tear us apart." She leans forwards as you let a frown slip. "We did not know, or even expect that something like that could be there. If I had known, I still would have sent you, this is why you are here. But I would have sent you backup, a Scamp of that size is nothing to scoff at."
"And there will be more 'Accidents' in the future like this?" Your mind flashes back to the shorter woman, she had tears trailing down her face as she sat, idly playing with her ring. She didn't even have a body to bury, his had been turned into mulch, the best she could do was bury some red tinted dirt. If you had just known that something like that could be around, it would never have happened. Fuuuuck... I need to learn their names.
Karen nods solemnly. "Yes, there will be. I can give you no guarantee that this won't happen again, all I can do is try to minimize the chances." She pushes a loose lock of hair behind her ear. "Do you understand now, why we need you? Most mages can do nothing to something like that, and they are all to common in the world." Your mind flashes back to the shorter woman's final attack. It was strong, her strongest, and it had done nothing. It hadn't even charred its outer layers. "Magical Girls are powerful beyond anything a normal human can hope to reach." She leans forwards a little, clasping her hands. "The world needs you, this is a fight we can't win on our own."
You let out a harsh breath, almost a bitter chuckle, at her words. The world needs me, the world never needed me before. You look at her. She's being honest as best you can tell, but you really don't know if she's telling the truth. Wonder if she practised that in the mirror. Her little speech was... something, you guess. Nothing she had said really mattered to you, so long as your sister was safe-- Oh.... you sneaky little bitch. You squeeze the mug you had just picked up, the crack along the bottom spreading slightly. Kill the monsters to keep your sister safe, otherwise they might get her. You were almost impressed with her, if it wasn't for how she stabbed right into your vulnerabilities.
You close your eyes as you slow your breathing, flicking them open and staring into her icy blue eyes. They were as hard as steel as she stared you down, waiting for your answer. Well, more like waiting for my acceptance. Not like there is any other answer. The feeling of being trapped grated on you, it was only made worse because she was being earnest here, she believed that this was for the best. What was that saying? 'I'll drag you into happiness kicking and screaming if I have to'.
You drink the rest of your mug in a single long swig, before gently putting it on the table before you. You stand and make your way to the door, stopping as you open it. "Tell Morgan when you need me." You walk out of the room, the armoured people, guards probably, were nowhere to be seen. You were still tense as you enter into your room, but you had calmed your magic down enough to be unnoticeable. The sight that greeted you was enough to make you stop in place and stare.
Morgan was leaning against the table, which was laden with food and Una was running about in the back doing something. Morgan jerks upwards in surprise, dropping a piece of paper that floats over to your feet. When you look down, you see that it has a little chibi drawing of you, your sister and Morgan all smiling. When you look up, you see Morgan shifting from foot to foot awkwardly as she stares blushingly at the ground. "Uhh, its..." She mumbles under her breath just loud enough for you to hear. "We thought we'd throw you a party, for your first mission yeah? My parents did it for me."
You see Una running around behind her more clearly now, she putting decorations up on everything, a bright smile on her face as she deposits hand-made paper decorations. She notices you, quickly popping the last little triangle down and running over to you. She hits you in a hug before you can respond, happily tugging you around the room to look at everything as she babbles on. You can see Morgan look at you, but you just shake your head to which she nods, making her way into the kitchen and moving three plates of different types of pasta into the room.
When you sit down, Una's cheerful chatter is impossible to ignore and she ropes Morgan into it as well. An hour later, you are feeling much calmer, it was just impossible to be angry at something when your sister was being so adorable. Morgan was distinctly awkward for the entire meal, she'd obviously heard about what had happened, but thankfully she didn't say anything.
When you were done, you felt the exhaustion from earlier creeping up on you. You'd mostly healed your injuries, but you were tired. When you settle down for an early sleep, Una crawls over to you with a book. You doubt she'll be awake for long, but you appreciate the sentiment, gentle ruffling her hair as you close your eyes. Still, a final thought pervades your mind as you slip into blackness.
Fuck this day.
