Magical Girl Quest - The Fire That Burns

Today was a sunny day, it was like most other days...
Canon Omake: Oro's Bad Day
By the way, dibs on the first Omake. I was struck by inspiration.

Omake: It Was Such a Nice Day

He could not remember the last time he had this much fun.
The screams and intestines, blood and fear, it was glorious!

Oro the demon finally found a way to enjoy himself again, far away from his kin; he was weak for his kind, the only reason he was still alive the fact he was marginally smarter than the rest of his peers.
Right now, he was having a blast tearing through these puny creatures; they were so small, so fragile. So broken

Finally, he could be strong. He could torment others instead of being tormented, how wonderful!
While thinking happy thoughts and ripping another of those beings in two, he noticed something; there, partly hidden behind a wall, was another of those things. The rest ran away already, so he would have to search for more to kill... but this one was still there.

Upon noticing his gaze, the creature flinched away and he punched on instict; miss. He barely did not get it crushed.
That one would even be a little challenge! Not that their little appendages would be able to even scratch him, but he liked himself a good chase. Of course it would end in slaughter, but knowing this was half the fun.

Setting off with a challenging roar, Oro pounded after the one that was still alive; it led him to more things to kill, which was good. He did not let himself get distracted that easily, though: those screaming little things were boring in comparison. He wanted to get that one and crush it.
But that one constantly ran and he was busy mulching everything in his wake just because he could. When he finally caught up again, there were others in his way. Taller than most of those he killed so far... maybe the males?

They pointed little sticks at him; pah, as if anything they had could hurt him... terribly. Those metal things stung when they hit, but most just pinged off.
Before he could come close however, Oro's world became PAIN
It cascaded through his body and made him scream in agony; searing hot pain lanced out from where his eye was supposed to be and his vision became worse. It hurt!

Hot anger bubbled up from within him; it had all been fun and games up until now. He would show them that no one bullied Oro!
He just noticed he still held one of the creatures he killed earlier. That body went ballistic at the enemy that hurt him like this; much to Oro's satisfaction, his attacker was ripped to pieces in a shower of gore when their kin crashed into them.

More metal pinged off of him, leaving scratches and a few deeper cuts; nothing bad, at least not enough to overshadow the pain coming from his lost eye.
He quickly took care of all of them, crushing them one by one even if ripping them apart would have been more fun. Fun time was over.

Then he ripped off the ceiling of whatever place the other one went into; amidst his rage, Oro hoped he did not lose it over the trouble here; this one he wanted to punish for making him hurt. Badly.
And there it was, together with another of those males.
Then there was... -
Light
-
and when he returned to his senses, they were trying to run past him.
Not this time. He snapped out his arm and caught the last male, quickly crushing him into paste; then Oro went back to hunt the other one... only that it was not running.

Heat erupted from it and it screamed back at him in a roar of anguish he knew all too well. Somewhere deep down, Oro applauded the tiny little thing on their anger. Not that he would let it live either way, but this might be interesting.

Despite his missing eye and the aftershocks of whatever that light was, he managed to land a hit on his new opponent and sent it flying far away; everything around it caught fire almost instantly, but those weak flames could not phaze Oro. Whatever new power this one gained, it was untrained. No chance.
Yet it managed to get back up to dodge Oro's follow-up strike. And strike back.

(The Thing: +15 Base Damage, +5 Ignition Aura, + 95 Dice = 115 Total Damage
Oro: + 15 Base Resilience, - 5 Gaping Wounds, - 10 ON FIRE = 0 Total Damage Reduction

Oro Health: 1145- 155 = 990)

PAIN erupted from his knee and the flames became stronger, engulfing him and singing his whole body; Oro screeched in wrath and terror, tumbling backwards from the strength put into this strike.
Just what was this thing? How did it hurt him like that? That tiny little thing, how much stronger was it?
He held back, even though every fibre of his being urged to go and crush the insolent being.

Then it ran. Realising that this was strength brought forth by despair, Oro grinned in understanding and threw whatever he could grab; it missed, but he quickly resumed the hunt anyway. Whatever it was, it was injured and almost dead; no amount of willpower could keep it up forever.
However, it also had one of those sticks the males were carrying earlier.

(The Thing: +100 Base Damage, -20 Never Done This Before, +15 Semi-Auto, + 71 Dice = 116 Total Damage
Oro: + 15 Base Resilience, - 5 Gaping Wounds, -10 Crippled Knee = +5 Total Damage Added

Oro Health: 1145- 121 = 869)

Aimed shots hit him hard once again, but the pain could no longer phaze him; Oro's previous injuries were already hurting so badly that it was just another nuisance. He just screamed at the thing again, whcih made it turn to flee; something it kept on its person was torn free and promptly caught fire.

Weird, why was it running faster all of a sudden?

In this moment, Oro had a brilliant idea; it was things like these that made him survive the torment of his kin.
Just after passing whatever was in that bundle, he swept it up and threw it after the thing; if it was that concerned about it, why not see what happened now?

Then the bundle exploded with power that Oro had never witnessed before.

(Shrapnel: + 50 Sharp And Going Very Fast = 50 Total Damage
Oro: + 15 Base Resilience, - 5 Gaping Wounds, -10 Crippled Knee, +200 Very Large Surface Area = +205 Total Damage Added

Oro Health: 869- 255 = 614)

Countless pieces of sharp metal burrowed into his body and made pain explode all over him again. He could feel the holes all over his body, aching and burning and... and hurting.
A loud scream reached Oro's ears, but he could not really see what it was about. His vision blacked and he felt his legs give out over the blood loss. No longer capable of holding his weight, he slumped backwards with a loud crunch.
Then he just lay there, staring at the ceiling of whatever this place was. He could no longer move, no longer stand... no longer fight.

Even after surviving into adulthood despite his weaknesses, he was to end in a place so far from home, beaten by something that should not have been capable to do this? Just how did this happen?

Just how had this tiny little thing hurt him so much?

Before he could even start thinking about an answer, Oro felt his skin light up in flames again.
His whole existence becoming pain, he did the only thing he could do.

He screamed.

Non-Canon Omake: Throwing A Flame Into The Future
Had an idea for an Omake, was hoping it would be the first, saw that someone else beat me to it. Oh well.

Omake: Throwing a flame into the future

They never stood a chance

The inhabitants of his world were a peaceful people. The last war having happened so long ago, that there was no one alive who remembered it. As such, when the monsters invaded, they were met with no resistance. Billions died within the first few days of their attack. It was a slaughter on a scale that he couldn't have possible imagined. One month later, their entire civilization was in ruins.

He had taken shelter in one of his great (x6) grandmother's old bunker/lab, working day and night on his last project. While he had zero experience with weapons, his great (x6) grandmother had quite a lot. After some searching, he had found some old blueprints of hers. Using them as a bases, he was able to construct the master piece that his great (x6) grandmother was never able to finish. Despite his lack of experience making weapons, he was and engineer, and a damn good one at that, able to work with both the mechanical, and mystical sides of his craft.

As he built this weapon, a part of him felt a twinge of fear; had his people really made tools like this in the past to ease the burden of slaughtering their own kind? The thought sent a chill down his spine, yet he ignored it and pushed on. He knew that this weapon would never shed even a drop of his race's blood. Mostly because it wouldn't be wielded until they were all dead.

It was already too late for them; no miracle weapon could save them now, not with the sickness in the air. He doubted there was any of his kind left that was not infected. Even though the monsters were starting to leave, his race was still doomed. There was no way to clear up the mist that infected them all, nor was there any time to find a cure for it. There was no saving any of them, he knew that.

...but he refused to just let them win! He refused to fade away without doing anything! That's why he began crafting this weapon; not to save his own people, but to give the monster's next victims a champion to defend themselves. A week after he began, the frame was complete. Now all he needed to do was infuse it with the magic it needed. So he put his hands on it, and thought of fire

Among all the elements on his world, it was fire that his people cherished the most. Fire was so much; it was a cleanser, a destroyer, it was a creator. It was fire that fulled their factories. Fire that they used to cook their food. Fire that they used to heal their sick. Fire did so much, and was so much. And while his people had cast aside it's more destructive powers, it hadn't lost them. Just as it created and cleansed, fire could just as easily cause massive destruction. Whatever world was the next to fall victim to those monsters, he knew in his soul, that they would need fire to save them.

After two long weeks, his work was completed:

As simple as it looked, it was more than just a sword; it would grant it's wielder armor to match, as well as power over fire itself. He thought about including some sort of instructions, but quickly realized that he had no way to overcome the language barrier.

With the weapon completed, he began to ritual to send his creation to it's master. Drawing the magic circle, he focused on the traits such a person would need;

Their world must be under attack by the monsters that destroyed mine
The most important parameter. Since the entire purpose of this weapon was to fight those monsters
They must be someone who will fight
If this weapon went to someone who wouldn't use it, then it was wasted
They must be someone who will protect
He had to make sure that they wouldn't turn this weapon on their kin, thus he added this. Someone who would protect others...no, someone who was already protecting others. Perhaps someone who was looking after someone else...kind of like a parent.

With the conditions set, he sent the weapon into the magic circle, to be sent to it's master. It vanished with a burst of fire that almost consumed him. With his work done, he fell to the floor, exhausted. He had spent the last of his strength on that ritual, and now he was dying. Yet despite his end being so close, he faced it with a smile, for he knew that he had sent another unprepared world the tool to fight back those that would destroy them. He had given someone the power to rise up as a champion to fight back the tide of death. And so he died with his heart and soul at ease.

'...I wonder what kind of person they'll be...?'

Not very long, but I felt that this would be better off short.

Canon Omake: Aspects and Concepts
Aspects and Concepts.

You are Cerys and currently you have the unique opportunity to experience what it's like to snuggle against your cute little sister... while having agonizing bolts of pain shoot up and down your body from a bunch of grenades that you accidentally set off.

Wasn't there a saying about pleasure and pain somewhere?

Still despite the moments of pain you are counting yourself lucky that your... magic, that's still taking some getting used to, didn't make them go off in an instant. That needed to change as soon as possible, sure it saved your life when fighting that monster but what if you end up hurting Una like this? The indiscriminate burning all around you was proof enough that if something like this happens again she would have to be far away just so she wouldn't end up like....

You shudder at the memory of the thing burning away and the implication you were quickly making, a quick lance of hot pain was actually welcomed by you as your thoughts were interrupted by it. There was an ominous feeling in you that this wasn't going to be a one time thing, that if you wanted to protect your sister while keeping her near you. you'd have to understand that blazing heat locked inside you.

The cage you made around that well of heat feels like it's enough for now but just like before if you just picture the thought of letting it loose on the world, that disturbing rush reared it's head almost tempting you to burn everything to ash. You hope that there's more to this then just burning, you tell yourself it's freaking magic, you might be able to do anything!

....Though maybe trying to conjure ice-cubes for your aching back is out of reach, but the thought of healing the damage done would be a welcome. You wonder if you're tied to things only related to fire considering you've been describing what was inside you as heat this entire time.

'Great.' you think to yourself, slowly doubting you can use your magic for your back. 'About the least destructive thing I can do is make flambes...'

*Yawn*

Before you could continue with your self-deprecating thoughts Una apparently decided to bury herself further into your chest, and while the added pain was far from pleasant it felt soothing to bask in the shared warmth. Dwelling on the gentle warmth of your sister, maybe you were approaching this all wrong? Instead of thinking of everything you could burn perhaps you can come up with the more positive things fire can do. Just thinking on it is a start and a heck of a lot safer then actually practicing when your sister is in your arms and you can't use your legs.

...

....hmm, You really want to be able to move soon so the thought of at least coming up with a concept of healing sounds appealing. You make a quick double check on your cage just to be safe as you rack your mind for ideas to come.

You weren't always lucky during the winter to find a house with heating but sometimes they'd have a fireplace as a good remedy. The warmth of those flickering flames added to your sister all the while wrapped up in a blanket was enough to ward the cold from your bones. It would be stupid to stick your hand near or in a fire but from where you sat it was perfect for seeing you through the night comfortably.

Still... that didn't seem even close enough for what you wanted to accomplish, you thought how of the times you used a fire to cook food for yourself and Una. If you didn't then you would've faced more then a few times with empty bellies. While you never really used it to see in lue of a flashlight you made sure it was always working, a fire was enough to keep the dark away.

Rummaging deeper through your head for ideas, you knew if metal got hot enough it could be shaped and made into a completely different image. It was in way destroying you admitted but it was changing one form into another, making it malleable to whatever your choosing.

Even as this reminded you there was more to fire then almost killing yourself and burning giant monsters to death, this line of thinking wasn't giving you what you wanted.

Sighing from the slowly mounting frustration, you winced as your wounds acted up again. Thankfully It wasn't as bad when Una had to pour liquid fire over them, even if it was to prevent infection, that still hurt like hell.

....

You held that thought, the pain was incredible and something you weren't too keen on doing but it prevented further more deadly problems in the future. The disinfectant in a sense burned away the multitude of germs just waiting to get you sick. In short it was along the lines of no pain no gain, it was a trade off that would always be worth it. Could the same be applied in the future you wondered?

But unfortunately that was the last idea you had for now anyway, you figured that this was productive enough considering the circumstances, of course you know this is far from over but it did ease your mind knowing just maybe you didn't have to use your magic in a particular way. Even if you've yet to try it, it was reassuring all the same giving you a base to hopefully start something.

But enough of that you thought, You'll face this problem again very soon but for now you closed your eyes and drifted back to sleep taking comfort in Una's body heat as she snuggled close to you as well as your own. A constant, gentle feeling that was far different to what was inside you but maybe eventually you'll see the two as the same.

==========================================================================================================================================================================

I don't really know what to say here. I hope this is serviceable? I wanted Cerys to just try and brainstorm a little bit like how we were in the thread and just try ideas but not have a deep philosophical understanding. Like fire can prepare food, keep people warm, light the way etc. Like her testing the waters so to speak before really going at it. I don't think I really have the character down but maybe as this goes on I'll nail it. Guess that's it, hope you got something out of it.

Semi-Canon Omake: Aftermath
Omake: Aftermath

Major Murphy had prepared himself for a lot of things when he joined the military; having to kill another human being, being killed himself, and many of the other unpleasant things one commonly associates with being a soldier. One thing he hadn't prepared himself for however, was finding a hell beast. To be fair, it had been dead for awhile...but that didn't change the fact that it was still there. After some soldier traced the fire back to it's source, they found the creature at a recruitment center, and all the personal there were dead, burned alive by the looks of it. The Major had first seen the beast when it had been brought back to base. Before then, he had just thought that his men were exaggerating when they called it a monster. Now though, he could understand. The boys in the lab had just finished a basic autopsy of it, and Barney (the head of the lab. For some reason, everyone just called him Barney) was about the brief the Major and the rest of Fort Drake's command staff on their findings. "Alright Barney, what do you have for us"

Barney, a tall balding man with an impressive physique for someone who spent so much time cooped up in the lab, cleared his throat and began "to start with; I can now confirm that whatever this thing is, it's a species we've never seen before"

That wasn't a promising start. "You're sure about that?" Second Lieutenant Douglass asked

Barney narrowed his eyes "no, I'm just guessing-yes I'm fucking sure! I just spent three hours mucking around in that things guts, and I've never even seen most of the things I found in there. Sure, quite a few of it's internal organs resembled the ones I'm sure we're all familiar with, but they still looked radically different. And before anyone brings it up; no, it's not because its burned."

The Major decided to move things along before anyone else could stall "alright, so we're dealing with something completely new that can spit fire. What else can you tell us?"

"It can't breath fire"

Everyone but Barney froze "what?" Captain Hale was the first to speak

"Whatever that thing was, it couldn't breath fire. There wasn't any kind of sack inside it that was connected to it's mouth that could hold some kind of flammable liquid. In fact, we didn't find anything that even hinted at an ability to create fire."

"But I thought that one of our men got a lucky shot and punctured it's fire generating organ" First Lieutenant Adams spoke up

"That's the thing; this creature didn't burn from the inside out. The fire that killed it came from somewhere else."

"Are you saying that something else caused that fire and killed the soldiers stationed there?" Adams asked

"The does actually make sense" Hale began looking over some of his papers "none of the reports we got about it mentioned anything about fire"

"Also" Barney drew their attention back to him "we didn't get to look at all of the bodies; but the ones we did examine all clearly died before being set on fire."

"Fuck" Adams swore "does this mean we have another one of those monsters out there!?"

"Maybe" the Major said "but I'm not so sure"

Hale rose an eyebrow "Major?"

"Whoever or whatever did this, they started at the recruitment center, with that creature. The fire then spread from there, and we haven't seen any sign of it since. I might not be a detective, but that doesn't sound like the actions of someone hostile to us. For all we know, the fire spreading could have been an accident"

"You think they're friendly?" Hale asked

The Major nodded "I do. Although, it might just be wishful thinking on my part. If there's someone out there that can do that to a creature like that, then I'd rather have them on our side."

"Could it have been a different creature?" Douglass asked

"Possibly" Barney nodded.

"The question we need answered is; where did this thing come from" said Adams

"To be honest; I don't have a clue" Barney shrugged "this thing is just so...alien, that's I'm not sure it's even from Earth"

The other men froze at the lab tech's words "Barney" the major began "are you implying what I think you are?"

"That this thing came from space? Hell yeah I am. When I looked at some of it's flesh under a microscope, I...I wasn't even sure what I was looking at. So, I tried our high power electron microscope; it was like nothing I'd ever seen before. It's cells were just so different from anything on Earth. Hell, this thing doesn't even have any carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen, phosphorus or sulfur in it!"

"What does that mean?" Douglass asked

"They are the six essential elements found in every lifeforms on Earth. In fact, before today; I believed that life wasn't possible without all six of them. The only elements in it's body that I could identify were Francium, and Selenium. The rest was a bunch of stuff I'd never seen before. Hell; this thing probably has four or five undiscovered elements in it's body. The more I think about it, the more sure I am that this thing can't be from Earth. As crazy as that sounds."

"This can't be real..." Douglass let out a dry laugh "an honest to god alien invasion"

"Well whatever this is, we need to let Washington know" The Major got up. "Best case scenario; this was some kind of accident. An alien creature finds its way here and goes on a rampage before being burned alive. Worst case; it was just the beginning. If there are more of those things on the way, the higher ups need to know so that we can be prepared. I just hope we're not too late."

I wondered how the military would react to the dead demon, and this was the result.

Canon Omake: Sleep, Little Child
Here we go; short and bitter.

Omake: Sleep, Little Child

She did not understand.

The arms holding her tightly were so warm, warmth flooding everywhere where she was nestled into the embrace... and Una desperately clung to the sleeping form. It was all she could do to give something back... after her big sister always made sure everything was okay.

But it was not okay... and Una knew. She heard the shouting and how things were smashed and... and... and she knew Cerys was shaking when she thought the younger girl was not looking.

Cerys always did her best to make sure she was happy... she made her food, taught her things and played with her... Cerys was good.
So why was everything so unfair for her? Why was she hurt when she was so nice and always helped Una? She did not get it.

Una was hurt, too... but she knew Cerys always tried to make it so he did not hurt her, even when she got hurt more...

All Una could do to show her sister how much she loved her was to cling to her and hug her and try to warm her a bit... Cerys was still shaking, even in her sleep...

It was not fair... but Una could do nothing to help her big sister... only try to not make it more bad.
All she could do now was hug her big sister and sleep... and hope she would not get hurt tomorrow.

Semi-Canon Omake: The Eldritch Rise
Have another one. This is obviously not canon and just an amusing thought about what would happen when Dead Gods Still Dream.
Because not every Omake has to be serious or sad.

Omake: The Eldritch Rise

Oh my honoured Lord, this message reaches out to you from beyond the great distance. I beg of you, allow us to retreat and return home!

The new realm we found was everything we desired and more. My warriors stormed with cheer and I was no different; I was the first to the fray after we discovered the path, the first to reach these lands...
Then we found a village near our first rift, a small commune of the weak little things that live in this dimension, built next to an ocean.
Then we eradicated it under glorious screams and carnage.

We did as we always do, my Lord... I swear to you...
That night, we rested in the spoils of our conquest... and that was when it started.

Something... they... they came from the sea. They came and we knew that they were looking for the fleshy things we killed.
We fought as we always did, but the things caught one after the other and killed them, then dragged the bodies into the water. The others are all gone.

I am all alone now...

But I can assure you, my Lord, this enemy is not invincible. I killed one and ate it.
That was yesterday... and since then, my dreams are plagued with visions of what is to come.

I know, my Lord... that when the stars align... when they align...

Oh please, please allow me to return home!
I can hear the waves calling... I can feel what slumbers in the depths...

...

What have we done?

Canon Omake: Meanwhile at the Clocktower
I was bored, so take this.

Omake: Meanwhile at the Clocktower

It had been an hour since Cerys left.

Morgan was still not sure about all of this; of course she understood that taking care of these pests was important, but... she could not stop herself from worrying.
She herself had had her fair share of tasks so far, but her friend was still new to this part of the world, to magic.

Why am I so concerned? Scamps aren't that dangerous, just annoying to destroy...

Her thoughts did not really help the matter... as she witnessed just the day before, Cerys had trouble controlling her powers at times. She was still in a state where she had to test out what worked... and this was horrifying to think about for a Magical Girl, whose innate power eclipsed anything Morgan herself was capable of after years of training. What if she had to use her more powerful magic and something went wrong?

...

The young woman shook her head to get these thoughts out of it. Everything would be fine, she could trust Karen's judgement; when her boss thought that Cerys was ready, then she would trust in that.

Only that there was still this little sliver of doubt she just could not get out of her mind...

Ugh... at least Una seems fine.

Much to her surprise, the younger sister did not complain when Cerys left, despite the two of them always being together. Morgan actually thought she might not be happy about this, or mope, or... or anything, really.
Instead, the little one was plowing through her extra exercises with a precision she really should not have. It was just a start on the overall pile, but Una showed no signs of tiring or boredom... well, okay. She was obviously bored because her current exercises were pretty repetetive, but that was about it.

Morgan had to suppress a sigh when she looked over her charge's shoulder. The girl was sharp and would have picked up on it in an instant.
"You're doing good so far."
Una just hummed and continued.

It went like this for another twenty minutes; the older girl went back to the paperwork she was given before just to pass the time, but her thoughts still returned to the subject of Cerys time. And time. And time. Again.
Seriously, what was wrong with her?

"Aren't you worried?"

Huh? Oh shit, I just said that out loud...
But the damage was already done; one moment where her brain was too slow to stop her tongue and now... now she had these big eyes directed at her, looking sweetly and a little confused. "Um... nope. Cerys is strong."
Then Una smiled and went back to her exercise. "She always comes back."

...wait, always?

Morgan got the feeling that she was missing something there, but she did not really want to dig deeper... especially because she did not want to push her luck here; at least she now knew that Una was not just pretending not to worry. No, the younger girl really believed what she just said.

Somehow, this made the older one a little envious. She saw how wonderful a sibling Cerys was before, but this relationship obviously went two ways... and as an only-child, she never had something like that.
Thinking about it, it would have been nice to have a strong big sister take care of her when she was little...

And Morgan almost said that out loud as well, but caught herself in time. Not this, this she would not tell Una of all people. That girl was sly enough to tell her something like not minding to share her big sister with the older girl... and Morgan really did not need the additional embarassment, seeing how a lot of people just seemed to assume... 'that'.

At least Karen was only teasing her with that kind of thing...

Thinking of Karen, Morgan paused for a moment while turning a page. Then she smiled a little.
Right, Karen was there... she counted almost like a big sister... or maybe a cool aunt? Something in that vein, yes.

Her smile vanished the moment she realised she did not actually remembered a single line from the previous page; Morgan took a deep breath and turned to this one, then started to read it again.

She really should stop being so worried when even Una was calm. Just stay calm and trust Cerys.

Non-Canon Crossover Omake: An Assortment of Sisters
The following contains light spoilers for The Fire that Burns, Crystalwatcher's Magical Girl Quest and Libra's Lament.

Additionally, @crystalwatcher, this might interest you as well.

An Assortment of Sisters
A Non-Canon Crossover Omake

It was... a weird afternoon. That much was for sure.
They were not entirely sure where they were, let alone when... but all the girls knew that now was a time to play and have fun. At least three out of four thought that.

Which may or may not be tied to them being ten, ten and nine years old respectively... while the last girl sitting at their table was fifteen.
A pair of twins took one half, brunettes with short and long hair respectively as well as bright blue eyes. The long-haired twin seemed to almost sparkle while talking to their youngest member, a tiny blunette... although her hair might be white with blue tinges instead.

The other twin kept quiet and listened to her sister and the other girl as they talked about shows they watched and other things, everything really. She did throw curious glances at the older girl to her right as well, a pinkette with friendly purple eyes. Whenever their gazes met, they smiled at each other and the younger girl quickly looked away in embarassment.

"Those four sure get along, don't you think?"
Two tables away, another group sat and was watching the aforementioned girls. However, there were only three people here; each of them was quite clearly related to some of the girls they were talking about.

However, their ages varied more; the youngest was thirteen, belonging to the blunette and keeping quiet while watching her sister with concern obvious to the older ones.
Next up was the older pinkette, who wore a smile brighter than any other in the room and had been asking the question earlier. She was seventeen, throwing glances at her fellow big sisters once in a while, but otherwise watching the younger children with a shine in her eyes. She had been squealing about how adorable they all were already... and there had been headpats. A lot.

The last of the second group was twenty four, although she looked like sixteen with her petite frame and short, brown hair. She also had to threaten violence to the pinkette when she tried to bring it up, but was otherwise keeping an eye on everyone while drinking her coffee.

Such was the company they found themselves in after meeting in front of this cafe about an hour ago.
Cerys did not know what brought her to sit here with two women so much older than herself, who she did not know at all on top of that. It did not feel wrong though, for some reason. Especially because her sister Una seemed to enjoy herself.
Sega Dreamcast Boheart, chipper as always, did not mind the company for herself or her sister Anastasia at all. The girl had been through a lot, so spending some time off sounded good.
Bianca Vescovi, calm and collected, would never openly admit to how glad she was to see her sisters smiling like they did right now. It was... a nice opportunity to catch her breath as well.

Of course, all three of them knew one thing for sure: something was wrong here.
They already talked about it right after their introduction. Bianca and Sega came from a year 2011, Cerys from eleven years earlier. There were other oddities and they soon realised that something made them all meet, for no actual reason.

With how they could relax for once, however, none of them minded it much.

"Yes", Bianca finally responded with a short glance at the little sisters. "Rico always gets along with girls her age, but Eva probably likes having someone older around."
Both Sega and Cerys needed a moment to remember that Rico was the twin with the longer hair and Eva looked more like her older sister; it was rather helpful that they were at least somewhat distinctive... and their parents did not give them matching names.

"Mhm, she seems like the quiet kind, who thinks a lot. I think they're both cute, though."
Sega giggled over her own statement and leaned onto her arms. "They remind me of Ana when she was their age. All three of them do."
Cerys did not comment. Even when she did not feel particularly pressured, she just had nothing to contribute here. She could see what Sega meant, but did not really care for the other girls next to Una. If her sister liked them, so would she.

"So, do you have any ideas what brought us here... or why?"
Sega still led the conversation, mostly because she had the good fortune to have been placed with two quiet girls of all people. Not that it stopped her from bringing good cheer, but having at least one more talkative person at her table would have been nice. Cerys only shrugged, although her brows furrowed in thought.

Bianca exhaled slowly and took another sip before responding: "this is probably something conceptual. We already know we are from different times... and I think that your world and mine are different as well, Sega. I don't even want to know what happened on your ends, we would all just waste time thinking about what might have been."
Oh, there she was thinking that she was the only one who could say more than ten words in quick succession. Sega nodded at the older girl, motioning for her to move on with the explanation after she took another sip.

"I won't even try to create an actual explanation... Gaia might know, but she will not tell about it. We are here and now, so we should do the best about it."
"Huh..."
"What do you mean with conceptual?"
Bianca and Sega turned to the youngest big sister, but the former just shrugged in a similar way to how Cerys had done earlier. "It doesn't matter, neither of us will remember this."

Now two gazes wandered back to the oldest, who looked at them. Then Sega flicked her own forehead. "Oh, I know! Whenever some people from alternate realities meet like this, they don't remember it happening later. Right?"
"Something like this", Bianca allowed with a small smile. "Magic is shaped by belief and many people would believe in this."

"What are you talking about?"
The three turned back, only to find an assortment of siblings standing in front of them. Anastasia had the other girls in front of herself, the twins flanking Una on each side and holding her hands. All three of the younger girls were all smiles.

Sega chuckled and raised a finger at them with a wide grin. "That's a secret~"
This actually drew a smile out of Cerys as well; it only grew when three out of four started pouting at them, but Sega just laughed it off.

"I was not done yet."
Bianca, meanwhile, had someone from the staff refill her cup and sipped at it again. She continued explaining to her expanded audience with a smile: "Even when we won't remember this, the memory should still be there. Wherever the four of you were before we met, whatever you were doing... our souls will remember the feelings."

There was a moment of silence and everyone regarded Bianca in awe.

Then the twins and Sega started snickering, soon joined by a giggling Una and Cerys.
Only Anastasia kept her calm while Bianca rolled her eyes and went back to her drink, the younger pinkette actually moved by what was said. Rico pointed at her big sister and tried to draw enough breath to actually talk... with mixed success.
"Y-You... ahaha, you sound like... like-like an old woman!"

After everyone calmed down somewhat and Sega petted Bianca's head without getting any reaction, Una sat down on her big sister's lap and pouted once again. She had just remembered what had been bothering her before.
"So mean, everyone but me is a Magical Girl..."
The twins looked at each other while Ana and Sega exchanged tired smiles... Cerys just looked around with newfound curiousity, seeing that the older ones had not mentioned this part so far.

"Um, Una? I told you our big sis is no Magical Girl, right?"
Eva took over after her twin brought this up, her eyes shining. "You're still small, so you have lots of time to become one too!"
This, obviously, made the youngest beam again and the children continued to chatter, this time about what kind of magic Una might have once she awakened her powers.

Meanwhile, Anastasia sighed and sat down between her sister and Bianca. She still wore a bright smile on her face, though. "Either way, it's nice to have this opportunity."
"Hear, hear!"
Sega raised her own cup high, then emptied it with a single swig as if to salute her sister's comment. Once she was done with that however, she beamed at the younger pinkette and ruffled her hair. "You're right, Ana. Things have been pretty rough lately, so this is pretty nice."

"I'm still not sure about all of this", Cerys finally spoke up; she held her babbling sister on her lap somehow, the smaller girl snuggled into her form even now. Sega chuckled some more and ruffled her hair as well, even when she flinched for a moment. "Now now, Cerys. You can take breaks too, you know? It's still early for your Earth, after all... heh, you're actually older than me once you are in the same year."

She let go after the blunette after a few moments, but continued smiling at her and the younger girl relaxed a little more.

A break was a nice thing.

They spent a while longer in the weird cafe, where the staff consisted of weird cat-things that no one really minded and all kinds of people seemed to meet. But in the end, it was time to go for all of them.

Sega waved widely and with a bright smile. "We're off then, take care on the way back."
Rico did the same with fewer words while Anastasia smiled as well and raised a hand as a farewell. "Good luck in whatever you are doing."
Eva just nodded in response while Una joined the happy waving... and Cerys just stood, taking in the features of those people she met never before and would likely never meet again. Then her lips curled upwards and she raised a hand as well. "I hope you all stay safe."

Bianca kept quiet throughout the whole process, but offered a friendly nod once everyone else was done. She then took her sisters' hands and led them down the street. Sega and Anastasia turned the other way, Una and Cerys took the third. The last group was hand in hand just like the first.

"What do you think of them?", Bianca asked her sisters once they made some way. Both twins looked at each other and then beamed up at the older girl; even though they backed it up with lots of praise and cheerful comments, those smiles were enough for the adult to know today was a good day.

"Nice girls, all of them."
"Yes, I they are all great people."

"Did you have fun, Cerys?"
Blue eyes fell onto another set of blue looking back up at her and the young Magical Girl thought for a moment, then smiled down at her little sister. "Yes, I did. What about you?"
"Of course!"

Even though they knew they would not remember each other... it was a precious memory.

Because the big wolf had too little screentime for my liking.
Omake: A Wolf's Bad Day

She had been out on the hunt when she sensed it. A small trace of magic in the air, mixed with the scent of human.
The little things sometimes came to her forest, wandering around. She let some be, when she was not hungry. Not that there was much on most of them to eat anyway, but she had to make do with what she could find.

The wolf did not openly react to the sensation, though; she knew better than to show whoever was following her that she noticed.
She continued to move through the forest that was her home, keeping her keen senses on the one following her; it was much slower than she was, but never lost her track... she needed to be careful.

That was why she soon took up a good hiding spot amidst a group of wide trees, eyes searching for where the sensation was strongest.

...
In the sky?
Humans could not fly, but... weird.

It stayed still, just like she did. Was it waiting for her to make the first move? Maybe waiting for her to fall asleep... this would make for a good trap; it had to come down eventually, so the wolf would just wait it out and strike at a good time.

Then she could feel it, for but a moment... a surge of magic so strong...
Her instincts screamed and the wolf got up, running for safety in an instant.

(Human???: +90 Thermal Spear, +20 Dice, +42 Spell Boost = 152 Total Damage
152 x 40 = 6080 Total Damage

The Wolf: +70 Base Resilience, +7 Dice, +500 Very Fast, +100 Prepared to dodge = 677 Total Reduction

5403 Total End Damage
Large: 25% Damage Reduction

4052 Final End Damage

The Wolf : 800 - 4052 = -3252)

Only the fire was faster; she could feel the heat on her back a moment before it hit her directly, burning away the white fur and charring the flesh below black, then turning it to ash.

In this one moment, before her death, the wolf realised.
This was not just a human.
This was definitely a human.
She underestimated them.

And most of all, the wolf understood one thing.

A new apex predator had emerged.

Her realisation became ash and void together with her.

  • [X] Plan Strike down from the Heavens:
-[X] The sky is not your domain— it rules the storm and flies faster than you do.
--[X] Prepare a plasma sphere, or more if you are confident in your ability to move with them, or multiple thermal spears if you are not and use halt on it before attacking with them all.
--[X] Use the water against it- Form ice around it's body to drag it down. Keep at it until it has neutralized your ability to do this or you have dragged it down to earth through sheer weight.
--[X] Use the ice thermal Spear to hit it with freeze.
--[X] Keep up fire around its head to blind it
--[X] Use the water from the storm to make blocks of ice in the direction it is flying so that it has to dodge or stop. If it tries to break through the ice, use halt on the ice.
--[X] stay a good distance lower than it, you'd rather not be hit with lightning from the storm if you can help it, and it going closer to the earth only helps you.
--[X] If it starts to build up speed despite all these measures use halt to break that momentum.
--[X] Use ice to try to limit its ability to fly away, you must not let it flee.
--[X] Attack with thermal Spears or Plasma Spheres whenever you get a good oppurtunity. Try to take it down fast.
--[X] Try not to damage the mountain in any way, you don't want to deal with whatever is making it so hot.
---[X] If all else fails call in the air strike, but inform them to not shoot in such a way that a miss could hit the mountain.
[x]try and stop the storm. Maybe cool down the air until it runs out of energy?
[X] use stealth to get into a better position
[X] Hit the thunderbird with halt
[X] Try to cripple a wing before halt ends
    -[X] Thermal Sphere

Omake: She Watches From The Shadows

The girl had been making good progress; not only did she survive the first while, she managed not to break herself like her... former companion as well. Maybe the error in design was only revealed because it mashed together with the wrong kind of character...

Gaia decided to put this thought elsewhere; this part of the complete conscience that was her was busy watching Cerys. Just a small instance, to stay updated on what happened.

She took note that these creatures hiding in the campsite were plenty nasty, though. Hopefully everything would go well... though it was admirable that the girl tried to go against her nature and not just envelop everything in fire.
Only if she did not try doing dangerous experiments like that... it worked before, but that was more of a stroke of luck. And the observer did not have the resources at hand to give Cerys the push she needed to get over the hindrance.

In short, the girl hurt herself, badly.

That was not good. Not at all.

Gaia grew more concerned as she watched on, saw the first few creatures destroyed... this was not... oh.
There it was, the ambush; one bad angle and... as she perceived time differently, Gaia basically got to watch the end of her most promising girl in slow motion. How the claws struck her... and even when the spirit of Earth wanted to reallocate, to help and stop this... she could not. Her capacities were held up elsewhere, it would take too long.

And then she saw it. Despite the crushing strength of her opponent, despite the fact she should be dead...

Cerys refused.

Not a single ounce of magic aside from what she used to dull the pain... the girl kept herself going with a titanic force of will. She remained alive and even concious despite the pain, then was saved by those with her.

Gaia quieted. For but a single second, all of her activities came to a halt in silent appreciation for the girl she had chosen.
This one was special indeed.

If she had lips, she would smile, a barely felt emotion surging through her. Pride.
This one girl, despite her flaws and mistakes, carried on. She was a child of Gaia just like all the others... and so, so special. This one, she could be proud of. Proud like only a mother could be.

"Carry on, my Knight. Make this your lesson and achieve greatness."
