Green Sun, Black Shadows (CG/Exalted)

Malfeas, as the King, can revoke it. (None of the other Yozis can do this, not even the Ebon Dragon - and he's the one who came up with it, via his Charm Spitting Curses From Oblivion.)
Is there a source for this? I did a quick search through the Infernals pdf and only found that the Ebon Dragon talked to the Neverborn about it and Szoreny provided critical insight into the curse, probably through mirroring the afflicted. From this I imagine that unraveling the GC was a team effort between the Reclamation Yozis, requiring all their brilliance to undo it.

Autobot, probably. A solar with the right tools? Probably not even then.

I don't know.
Essence 10 Solars are bullshit.

Also, would removing the Great Curse do anything to an elder Exalt? By that point, the whacked-out behavior patterns have become a basic part of how they process things, so they might well keep having "Limit Breaks" because that's how they've learned to respond to significant stress and/or setbacks, and removing the Curse's ongoing influence wouldn't remove the ingrained mental paradigms it helped cultivate.

"I'm not the unstoppable force I was in life, but my mind is clear at last. Here at the end... I will become what I should have been all along." - Unnamed Solar ghost, CoCD: Underworld, chapter 1 comic.

[X] Yes

It's too late to change the plan now. You'll just have to trust in your men to overcome any possible obstacles. You trained the Black Knights, gave them purpose and belief in your abilities to make their dreams a reality. Everyone has a role to play, you included, and failure is not an option.

Never again.

Your confidence receives a boost when you see the gate to the hotel open, the JLF soldiers making motions for the van to come inside. Whatever Kusakabe sees in you, an ally or an obstacle, he cannot resist the desire to meet you in person. That will be his downfall.

When the driver stops in front of the main entrance you smoothly hop down on the ground. An officer flanked by two armed soldiers approaches you. "Are you Zero, leader of the Black Knights? Lieutenant Colonel Kusakabe-sama wishes to meet you."

"What a coincidence: this is exactly the reason I am here." You perform a flourish with your hand as the driver leaves the van and stands respectfully behind you. "Lead the way."

"One moment." His gaze shifts to the van. "Is there someone else on the vehicle?"

You see his hand starting to rise, probably to give the order to check it. You will not allow it. "No, only us two were on it." You say those words as if they are the absolute truth. "It's just a van we appropriated from a couple of distracted journalists, surely taking me to Lieutenant Colonel Kusakabe is more important that checking an empty van?"

His hand stops and lowers. "Yes, you're right. Follow me, but only you."

"But of course."

You're rising in the elevator when you receive a transmission from the transmitter you installed into your mask. "Zero, I'm Nathan. Do you copy?"

You discretely tap a section of your belt, where a device was hidden that allow you to send messages in Morse Code, and send a reply.

"You cannot speak. Got it, I'll be brief then. I managed to hack into Britannia's communications. I may be new at this but even I can tell the security is a joke. Anyway, there isn't much that wasn't on the news save for one thing: there is an underground tunnel below the hotel and Britannia tried to send Knightmare Frames to destroy the support foundations of the building. The plan was to use the distraction to rescue the hostages and let the JLF die in the collapse. It didn't work. The JLF has some kind of linear cannon down there, it tore all Frames sent against it with ease."

Kusakabe truly is going all out. Such a pity he's incompetent.

"However, Clovis just gave the order for the Lancelot to attack the tunnel again, alone. I think it's that Seventh Generation Knightmare Miss Rakshata talked about. It's possible it will succeed, so if you feel the building moving get out of there, quickly. There is a small boat anchored in the J-33 section and a storeroom full of auto-inflatable lifeboats. You can use them to escape."

So that's its name, Lancelot. How fitting for such a pest to have the name of the knight that caused the fall of Camelot.

You send another quick reply, telling Nathan to tell the same thing to the others before ending the communications.

====

Everything happens without a sound.

While the JLF soldiers are waiting in the lobby together with the driver the rear of the van opens and two figures wrapped in black slide out, using the vehicle's size to hide from cameras and open the doors to the lobby. The driver, who was instructed to initiate small talks to distract the soldiers, gives no sign of reacting.

Lian's fingers bury into the neck of two soldiers, the mouths that opened into them crushing and devouring the delicate cartilage inside.

The King Beggar of Nadir beheads the heads of the remaining two soldiers with a single move, mortal bones being no match for Soulsteel.

"News from Zero?" Far from being shaken from the grimsly display the driver poses the question with an even tone, raising his cap to reveal Akito's face.

"Only one: that we must hurry." Nadir hands out to the Slayer his bladed tonfas. "The Britannians are going to destroy the foundations and make the building sink, soon."

"Crude, too crude." Akito grins toothily as the rest of the Black Knights run inside the lobby. He takes out a pair of advanced goggles and put them on. "Where?"

Lian's delicate lips part as her dainty tongue licks the air, discerning through all scents until she finds fear and heavy stress. "This way."

They move with confidence, aided by the hotel's map provided by Nathan and Lian's extraordinary senses. All patrols are quickly and silently deal with, until they reach a door guarded by two guards.

"Is it clear?" Nadir whispers.

"No, there is one of them right in front of the door." Akito replies cryptically. Good thing he always brings with him essence-seeing lens in case spirits are involved, they allow him to see the blue man standing in front of the door. "Distraction."

Nodding Nadir grabs a bullet, takes aim and flicks it so that it lands in the opposite direction. It lands with 'clink!', causing the heads of the guards and the dematerialized spirit to turn in that direction.

Akito shoots forward, almost emulating those favored by Adorjan with pure leg strength alone. He pulls back his fist and growls "Be humbled." before swinging it at the spirit's back.

The hostages are startled when the building tremble, but have soon something else to worry about as masked men and women dressed in black rush into the room and start decimating the JLF.

"See, what did I tell you Shirley?" Milly says with a wide smile as she keeps massaging Nina's head on her lap, having been forced to calm her down when her fear of Elevens almost got her in troubles. "Heroes always arrives to save the fair maidens."

====

When you're ushered into the room Kusakabe is waiting inside seated on a couch, flanked by two soldiers and with his back against a flag of the old Japan put on the wall. How trite.

"So Zero, what is the reason of your presence here?" He asks as if trying to impose dominance and subservience on you, not realizing how outclassed he is.

Hidden by the mask your eyes flash green. 'Worthless, worthless and-oh, not totally worthless.' Kusakabe and the man on his right are mere mortals, but the essence of the one on the left burns brighter. But he's not an Exalt.

"An human sorcerer most likely. Must be the one who summoned the Elementals and negotiated with the minor gods. Back in the day all human settlements had someone trained to act as diplomat with supernatural creatures."

Mildly interesting but ultimately irrelevant. Even if Kusakabe really made a pact with a higher ranked god, the latter would obviously risk their neck by participating.

The buffoon has exhausted his usefulness to you.

"Kusakabe Josui, I have come to inform you that your actions today have dishonored yourself and your men." You intone, using your anger at your friends being taken hostage to add an edge to your voice. What you are about to deliver is a horrible truth that will bring despair and so it's supported by Ebon Dragon, but you want him to suffer. "Taking your men into almost certain death in an operation not approved of by your superior might be forgiven, but you have taken innocent women and children hostage, used them as your shields. This is cowardice unbefitting of a warrior of Japan! You have sullied the honor of not only the Japanese Liberation Front, but the very Japanese people who you claim your actions serve! That bastard Clovis will use this opportunity to destroy the JLF's reputation worldwide, to give them confirmation that the Japanese are the savage barbarians Britannia claims us to be, to justify their occupation and oppression!"

You reach into your mantle, and pull out an ordinary sheathed tanto, letting it fall on the table in front of you. "There is only one recourse to restore your honor, Kusakabe Josui."

He appears to be about to say something in retort, but his eyes go wide as he begins to see things that aren't there. "N-No! Father! Shinji-kun! What are you doing here? Why are you looking at me like that! Stop it! I did nothing wrong! Stop!"

He fearfully stands up and backs away even as his guards look at him in confusion. One of them, the one with a stronger Essence, abruptly turns back to stare at you with wide eyes.

You shoot him three times, two in the chest and one in the stomach, before doing the same with the other one. The guards who were stationed outside are dealt with in the same manner.

Kusakabe, obvious to the carnage, has taken out his sword and started to slash wildly at the air as he keeps repeating he did everything for the sake of Japan. Maybe you shouldn't be so surprised, to keep going so far his delusions must be strong indeed.

The whole building shakes once, twice before it begins to sink. "Damn it all! Already?"

"Zero!" Nadir rushes into the room. Seeing you're okay he smiles but doesn't relax. "We gotta go!" He tosses you the detonator.

"Thank you." You catch it with one hand before aiming your gun at Kusakabe. "I have no more time to waste with you."

You pull the trigger and nail him in the chest. The force is enough to send him stumbling backward and through the window door before he falls outside the hotel.

The thumb of your other hand presses the detonator's trigger.

====

With Nadir's help you quickly reach the escape point and board the boat, leaving the debris behind. The hostages were put on the lifeboats floating ahead, so that Britannia cannot attack you without doing the same with the hostages.

One Black Knight gives you the OK signal before leaving the camera mounted on the bow and returns to your side. In a few seconds you'll be on live.

After such a splendidly done operation, it's only fair you regale the whole Area Eleven with a grandiose speech by yours truly.

Awesome. Hostages rescued, hostiles dead, no casualties on our side.

We didn't find out Euphemia was there, though I suppose Lelouch could possibly notice after the speech or find out due to hacking. On the other hand, since we rescued the hostages before any were executed Euphie never stood up and got Nina to notice her, so there's no fixation... and she's about to see Zero making a speech about justice and protecting the innocent, with Zero's mask allowing the fascination effect to come through. My god, what have we done?

...eh, what's one more stalker among friends? :p

EDIT - Actually, Milly probably kept Nina calm with her powers, now that I think about it.

Emotion powers really are wonderful, aren't they?

Anyway, we do need to think about this speech. I suppose the thought is what goals do we wish to accomplish it? Off the the top of my head:
-Make us look Just and Heroic.
-Make us seem like unbiased Heroes to the Britannians.
-Make us NOT look like the enemies of the Japanese, including the JLF. That last part is something we definitely need to address in order to spin the story in our favour.
-Sew the seeds of Pro-Yozi propaganda. Ideally, we'd want to start playing up the ills of the world, so that we can present ourselves (and eventually the Yozi) as saviours.
-Advance our cause. We could probably use this as a chance to recruit, solicit donations, or maybe establish the beginnings of a cult.

Hmm. Some points that we may want to hit;
- Kusakabe lead a rogue faction, without knowledge or approval of his superiors. He is not representative of the JLF or Japan as a whole.
- The Black Knights intend to punish evil and fight for justice without discriminating by nationality or other. Mention both this hostage drama, and Shinjuku Ghetto. As part of this, we will welcome everyone who shares our goals.

As for which Excellency to use, propably Oramus. Our speech and declaration comes completely unexpected, we present an image that is endlessly fascinating while showing not a single doubt in the ideals and cause we speak for, yet our mask keeps our true face and where we might come from a mystery. We rebel against the natural order of the strong and ruthless dominating the weak and principled, contrasting ourselves against all other factions that have influence on the world stage, as we seek against all odds to bring about something that most people would think impossible; A world changed for the better, and peace and justice that none thought possible.

Mainly I'm planning on a variation of the canon speech given here. That did well to kick off mass recruitment into the Black Knights, and I think it should be easy enough to modify towards our ends.

As far as the JLF goes, we actually do want to discredit them with this. It's what Lelouch did in canon, and he did it for a good reason - right now the JLF is the primary resistance movement in Japan, plus a bunch of terrorist groups. We want the Black Knights to look like the clear alternative so people start joining us instead. We don't need to go outright hostile, but the canon speech handles this well - it decries their actions here in taking innocents as hostages, and says we acted to save the innocents. Clovis is going to do the rest in terms of making the JLF look bad anyways, because propaganda is his thing.

The JLF will eventually need to disband and be folded into our organization if possible, but if not we need to eliminate them like Lelouch did in canon.

Well. The JLF, iirc, answers to the Houses of Kyoto, which Kaguya pretty much controls by now. Absorbing them should be feasible enough, or alternatively keep them around as an allied 'independent' faction. Meanwhile, not discrediting them avoids collaterally damaging the PR of the various anti-Brittanian independence movements as a whole.

It's less that the JLF answers to the Six Houses of Kyoto and more that they are funded by them - they don't have absolute control. Also, Kaguya currently only controls half of the houses as far as we're aware, though of course she's working on the others. It also needs to be remembered that the Kyoto Houses aren't a dictatorship, nor are they necessarily a democracy. While they nominally make decisions as a group, they are capable of acting independently if they feel they need to. As such, pushing too hard before Kaguya has full control would be ill advised.

As far as not discrediting the JLF goes, it's too late for that. That ship has sailed. They just took a group of hostages that included minors and international diplomats - the international community is going to be calling for the JLF's destruction for what they'll perceive as an attack on their citizens. Clovis is going to double down on anti-JLF propaganda, and it's going to be work because Kusakabe handed him this incident on a silver platter.

The best path for the speech is to just do what was done in canon - say we did not approve of the JLF's actions today and we punished them for it. Nothing more needs to be said in that regard. That doesn't antagonize them, but fits into our own propaganda of attacking innocents being bad and that we're a bunch of awesome heroes that anyone who wants real justice should join.

But there can only be one master of the house. And Lelouch's goals in the anime were to explicitly draw a line between nationalism based movements like the JLF and anti-Britannia movements like the black Knights.

Destroying the JLF is a good thing in Lelouch's mind and is why he assassinated their leadership. Absorbing them is only desirable if he has already broken them. Allied movements are only as good as they are subordinate or specialized suppliers.

Alright. I bow to your superior knowledge of CG. Throwing the JLF under the bus it is!
I still want to dissociate the JLF's actions from at least the Japanese people as a whole.

We could discredit JLF through actions Kusakabe didn't do. I mean the offer of Tanto so he could do the right thing in horrible situation which the coward refused forcing us to shoot him to defend the "innocent" hostages.

I have to admit, I was a bit worried with the spirit-support problem that was facing against us. But I should have realized that with the amount of Celestial Exalts we were throwing at the problem, those were just nearly unnoticable speed bumbs at the best. Almost anti-climatic really, when compared to wyld-mutated giant poodles and the likes, but a breather mission is nice every now and then. And I think we will soon be ready to kick out the training wheels / canon / fate, just after we gather a biiit more personal power and allies.

I was not sure at first if discrediting the JLF was the right thing to do, but yeah, Enjou has a point about the PR damage they will suffer after this regardless of what we do. Having them as allies seperate from our organization could be used to taint our image by association, so it probably is for the best to weaken them now. Afterwards, Kaguya should have easier time breaking them apart and giving us the choice bits to be folded into the Black Knights.

Also, should we take action against the supernatural side involved in this? Whoever was giving the support, they seem to be ready to involve civilians/mortals without much thought. Eliminating them before they cause more problems to us by whatever they might do next is likely a good idea. They might also seek revenge on us for foiling their "ingenious plan", and while that won't probably be a that big problem, it might raise the risk of drawing Sidereal attention. Unless this already was a Sidereal plot from the beginning. Better to be on look-out when near any teacups...

It would depend on if we can find anything out. For all we know this is just the plan of that nameless sorcerer we killed and whatever god he negotiated with to get the Elementals will shrug it off as being not worth pursuing. Said god might also see better opportunity in working with us given that we proved victorious here, if the god is particularly opportunistic.

True, but direct involvement might give out too much information about for who we truly work for. Even if the god does not betray us, he might be shaken down for information by the Dragon Blooded or other Exalts. We should consider and execute such actions with care.

Anyway, as you promised to do the write-in, I will be looking for any Charms and other things to use in the speech. Not sure if necessary, as this might be fluffed without using anything on the mechanical side of things, but I will do it anyway because its fun for me, for some strange and eldritch reason.

Pre-speech:
-Insignificant Embers Intuition: Before we do anything else, we can check the rescued hostages for anything interesting. IC reason could be checking for anyone important, at least in supernatural sense, as Lelouch is already suspicious about someone like that possibly being there from how Clovis was acting. ...Though from what I'm getting from reading it, it might be only a single target per activation. And with a large crowd, using it on everyone doesn't seem to be wise idea, if we want to be left with any motes.
-Dual Gaze Paradox: It seems to work on spotting beings with awakened Essence only if the rank is four or higher. However, it can spot any active effects if someone decides to use them.
-Witness to Darkness: Or maybe he could just look and see if he spots anything suspicious, as he isn't hindered by it being too dark (if it is dark in the first place).

Speech:
-Willpower: Spend 1. We seem to have a full pool at the moment.
-Oramus Excellencies: We are a LARGE HAM. Lets use the Excellency we have that fits closest to that.
-What Is And What Should Never Be: Full pool of stunt dice currently (if its up-to-date). Throwing one in if we do not reach the lofty heights of 3-dice -level is a good idea for something this important.
-Beautiful In My Way: We are quite fabulous.
-My Dark Lady: Because of how the Ebon Dragon rolls, we get maximum impact out of our appearance if we are actually not directly illuminated, so for lighting preparations (it is night like in the canon, right?), maybe shining lights on the subordinates surrounding Zero, while leaving him in the relative darkness in the middle, with outlines barely visible.
-Cracked Shell Circumvention: This probably doesn't apply, as we have an escape route open for us. But I will still include it to the list if it can do that via giving a really good speech that will make it harder for the Britannians (and Clovis especially) to block our escape without taking a severe hit to their image in the eyes of the common people. But that seems a bit stretching things, so probably not something we can include.

And this of course raises the problem of being too good at what we do. If we pull out all stops, pretty much everyone who is in the know will realize that we are not a mortal. That is not by itself too bad, but if they start thinking we are a Celestial or a Solar...

It all comes down to the balancing act of how much attention we can get from the masses, and how much attention we can survive from the Exalts and other supernatural things.

Probably should make a stunt for checking out the crowd to see if we can spot whoever it was that Clovis was so interested in that was there.

Errrrrr...

Okay, the update kind of made this more awkward than I expected it to be.

Essentially, I was talking with @Alexander89 about an Abyssal I'm writing up for this quest, and he raised the concern to me that my idea might be a bit too "old-fashioned epic" for you, the audience, to accept in this story.

Now, caveat here, the Abyssal in question lives in a Wyld Zone with minimal contact with the outside world; the raksha living there have pretty much done all they can to make it their private little playground, and there's sufficiently little there of interest to the outside world that its primary tourists are either Lunars scavenging for ingredients or raksha who want to do their roleplay in a more 'high fantasy' kind of setting, as a break from the strict urban fantasy LARP that is Creation in GSBS.

My personal perspective on this at this point in time is that what I'm proposing isn't any more objectionable than @forginblade having Norse Elves in the Australian Outback, but we all agreed that asking the question here would be the best way to handle it.

So, what do you say?

Probably should make a stunt for checking out the crowd to see if we can spot whoever it was that Clovis was so interested in that was there.
Hmm. I might try this later.
So, what do you say?
I personally don't see any problems. We already have a ninja-pirate-zombie-cyborg mix and mash from the Exalted, fused with the CG setting, and the further stirred by many GSPs and other characters that draw or nearly copy their traits from other characters in various media. Something like that would be just be an another drop to the beautiful sea of madness that is this quest.

@Alexander89 - what's the current status of our Essence pools? We need to know this for Charm use. Since this is a live speech it should be effective if we use Charms, I imagine. (not sure if they work as well when playing a recording, though)
