Green Sun, Black Shadows (CG/Exalted)

Yeah, I agree with those above. This is most likely canon part. Siddies can be around but not a trap.

This also means that Clovis is holding back because possible PR disaster and because (unknown to Lelouch currently) Euphemia is in there. If anything would happen to her, Cornelia will leave the Middle-East front immediately to come kill Clovis and start "culling" until rage burns off.

Canon route to solve this is probably the best. Getting important parts done without geass is easy enough. Also, if the kidnappers are kind enough to show image of hostages, it should be easy enough to notice Euphie if someone was looking (Kaguya, since she got time to sit at base during this operation), to see where the most imporant VIP's are seated so troops can move them off first.

They might also be here to make sure that the empire gets as good a deal as possible since they use them much like canon Sidereals use the Realm.
Hm, if there is a Sidereal, ideally we want to kill them, and then pin the blame on someone else - the Underworld, for instance...
That might provoke a war between abyssals and sidereals and that's exactly the sort of thing we need while we laugh all the way to the bank.

As much I would love to do that. This has to be very open operation. There are cameras around the place. Trying to fool Siddies that Abyssal killed their member and left the rest of the living in hotel alive while we were saving them is monumental task.

We could try to blame the Lunas. I mean, it won't do anything good to the nice relationship we're trying to get with them, but it's probably better than getting found out this early in the game. Plus, Lunas rebelling against the realmBrittania is something they're known for.

Honestly?
In exchange for starting a heaven-underworld war that'd drain them while we could sit pretty, I'd be willing to not save everyone in the place, only the ones absolutely critical for our purposes.
That's the sort of thing that'd make things so much easier for us.

Besides, we didn't know that supernatural powers were a thing IIRC, so clearly the world isn't completely open about it.

Without any foreknowledge that one will be there, there's not a lot we can do to plan around it. The best I think we could likely do is use Loom-Snarling Deception + Eldritch Secrets Mastery to give ourselves a false fate as a Dragonblooded, which I'd want to do anyways. Depending on how much the Sidereal(s) know about the original intended course of fate, it would make it either look like Lelouch Exalted as a Terrestrial instead of getting Geass or that Zero was outright replaced in Fate with a Terrestrial Exalt taking on the same role. Use of demons would be disliked by them, but it's not like use of demons by Dragonblooded is banned or anything. It should also be remember that in character Lelouch has no reason to suspect that Sidereals would be interfering here, since he wouldn't know if this was an originally fated event or not.

In regards to convincing Clovis to let us through, it is noteworthy that Zero's reputation is very different than before - he hasn't claimed to have killed a member of Britannian royalty. The Black Knights have also been painted as vigilantes rather than terrorists, and we've got known operations against Japanese people who are scummy as well as Britannians so it isn't like it'd be unusual for Zero to come up to bat here to negotiate for the hostages' safety against the JLF. So, still leaning towards going something like the canon route - we'll just need the right Charms.

Ok, rough outline of doing the Canon Events, Exalted Edition!

Preparation Actions
1. De-attune Stormwand (+3 peripheral motes) - Non-lethal is unlikely to be useful here. [16/16,23/39]

2. Loom-Snarling Deception + Eldritch Secrets Mastery to make yourself seem like a Dragonblooded. Air Aspect, maybe? (-7 motes, commited peripheral). [16/16,16/39 motes available for the operation]

3. Send in some of your demons in advance to scout the Britannian camp to gather intel to see if any addition information can be gained that might help with convincing Clovis to let you do as you want, or anything else that might be useful. Also grab a news camera. (backup plan on the camera would be to use our own and hack into a news feed)

Main Actions
1. Approach as in canon, stunt in a way for Oramus Excellency to be applicable with the aim of convincing Clovis to let us through. Presence + Manipulation is likely the thing to use here, so base dice pool before stunting is 9. I'm thinking four uses of Second Oramus Excellency, or perhaps more uses of First Oramus Excellency plus Mythos Exultant and/or Inevitability Technique. (someone might want to math out which is better) This is the main hurdle to operational success, barring surprises.

2. I don't expect the JLF forces to deny us entry - one man wouldn't present a risk to Kusakabe, so he'd want to meet us face to face.

3. Once in the meeting, we have two choices. We could either just have our demons immediately murder Kusakabe and his guards, which would be easy but could escalate things and might also expose our use of demons to Euphemia. We could on the other hand use that as the backup plan, and instead try to use Performance + Manipulation to make an impassioned speech about why Kusakabe has betrayed the ideals of his people, enhancing it with First Ebon Dragon Excellency, thus revealing he's actually a villain.

If the social attack is a success, we use Words That Twist Like Daggers to make him hallucinate that the ghosts of his ancestors, slain comrades, and anyone else he holds in high regard who is dead reveal themselves to him, claim he has dishonored himself, his family, and his people with his cowardly actions, and demand that he commit seppuku to restore honor. Hopefully he'll do it, and if he does we have witnesses who can go back to the JLF and spread the word. Or they off themselves too. Regardless, we win. If it doesn't work, go with demons as plan B. After that we secure the hostages, get the hell out, and blow the building like in canon, then make good on the PR opportunity. Things look like what Fate intended, any Sidereals are happy, they lay off for a while.

Thoughts?

Well, what are the odds of exalted dodge hacks allowing them to break through the tunnel the JLF managed to holding using their Anti-Knightmare emplacement? I know Terrestrial exalted are significantly less bullshit, but this doesn't seem out of reach for them. I just feel like, if/when Clovis gives the order for the Knightmares to launch the assault they'll managed it a lot quicker, possibly not even having to use the Lancelot.

Seems like a good plan to me.

I support the use of immaterial murder-spiders.

Have them walk through the walls and take position behind the guards (especially the ones manning that flippin' gun). Right before we make our dramatic entrance, have them materialize, cut some throats and then dematerialize again. Drastically reduces the threat to ourselves and the hostages.

I would presume that if canon is the path fate intended, then not much better than canon when you consider that Cornelia would have had Dragonblooded subordinates. Also, remember that the plan in canon involved the Lancelot destroying the foundation block of the hotel in order to sink the building so that they could send in a rescue team to the upper floors without actually having to fight their way up.

The problem is doing that is that it needs to be done in such a way that A) the JLF doesn't become aware that their guys are dead (they likely make regular check ins), thus making them execute the hostages and B) the Britannians don't take advantage to accelerate their plan to sink the hotel and mount their own operation while we're still in there. IMO the big gun is actually to our advantage because it makes the JLF feel secure and it delays Clovis's people. We want to do this in a way that gets the Black Knights credit for the rescue, if at all possible.

Plus we'd prefer not to have it brought to people's attention that we use demons.

However, we are on something of a time limit. By nightfall the JLF forces inside start executing a hostage, one ever thirty minutes, by pushing them off the building.

I have come up with a devious idea to get Clovis to allow us to pass. We come as Zero, hand him a manila envelope containing a note from "Eric Granfield" or "his friend from Shinjuku" saying "Zero is my agent, the Black Knights are my puppets, let him handle this and you'll see results." and also include a bonus with pictures of C.C. interacting with some high ranking Britannian official who hasn't been purged yet to further sow dissent in the ranks. If the initial social attack here works we could use Words That Twist Like Daggers to give him an appropriate delusion as well. This should convince him of Eric Granfield being on his side, as well as the Black Knights being a ploy of Britannia's secret intelligence. If it worked, the results would be... amusing. Or some variant of this. Thoughts?

We come as Zero, hand him a manila envelope containing a note from "Eric Granfield" or "his friend from Shinjuku" saying "Zero is my agent, the Black Knights are my puppets, let him handle this and you'll see results."
... and now Clovis is holding papers saying that the Black Knights are a Britannian false flag operation, which he could cash in at an opportune moment to earn a brief PR boost and undermine our own operations. Also, he would probably respond to this by expecting a certain degree of executive control over the Knights' actions; after all, if they're Britannian assets operating in his Area, the least he can expect is the right to slap them upside the head if they make more trouble than they solve, and the least he can do is help provide them with guidance on where best to concentrate their efforts. Considering our job is to burn down Area 11's ruling government, that's not exactly going to be good for us.

Trying to handle the problem by going "lolclassified" would, at best, result in Clovis getting into a pissing contest with this perceived group of loose-cannon yahoos running riot and making his job harder. At worst, he'd start asking some very pointed questions of Britannian high command, find out we're full of shit, and then start calling down as much hell as possible on our heads for tricking him into destroying the Pureblood movement and defiling the honor of loyal Britannians.

I'm not sure how many people would believe the papers as that could be easily forged, but your other points are fair enough.

Perhaps we could simply come to him as "Eric Granfield" and claim that we have a high-level agent in the Black Knights, rather than claiming that the Black Knights are a Britannian-supported organization. Then we can give him delusions with Words That Twist Like Daggers.

Well, spiders weave webs don't they? Perhaps we can have them weave catch nets under the hotel so that no hostages actually die. Another feather for our cap and it extends the time we have.

That would likely expose on camera that we're using demons. The media are all over the place there. That's not really an option. We also have no guarantee they won't just start shooting hostages instead.

The first hostage they kill is just some random guy. By the episode timeline Zero gets in before the second hostage is executed. The executions are also what forces Cornelia to use the Lancelot to sink the hotel - at that point time is up and Britannia can't wait anymore.

EDIT - Also, Euphemia will reveal herself to the JLF in around the same timeframe, which means things will get hairy if we don't resolve the situation in good time.

Hmm. Maybe we can make use of our words and talk them down? Negotiate for a few releases or even an exchange if they fall for it?

Driving them mad isn't a good idea until we've got the hostages clear I think.

@Alexander89 - A few questions to help with planning.

1. As best as Kaguya is aware, is Kusakabe a bog standard mortal?
2. Would our cult be able to arrive in the area before us in order to send in their demons to spy? If not, does Kaguya have any other Yozi cults in the area she could contact to do so?
3. By around what time would Lelouch and company arrive?

In canon Lelouch forces Kusakabe and his guards in the same room to commit suicide with his Geass, and when other guards come in to see the ruckus it looks exactly like that they killed themselves out of shame. The hostages are fine after that because Zero is basically in command. What we'd want is a targeted derangement towards the end of getting Kusakabe to off himself, which given that he's likely a normal mortal should be easy enough considering that Words That Twist Like Daggers makes the enhanced Social Attack have Unnatural Mental Influence. Mortals can't spend Willpower to resist UMI, so we'd probably just need to hit him with it a couple times at most.

Worst case is we call in the demons, who we don't even need half of to deal with the number of people in and around Kusakabe's room, so we could send the rest as emergency hostage rescuers. (though we'll also have a few of our combat Exalts working to that end, I think)

1. Yes
2. Yes to the first.
4. If you start immediately you will arrive before the BK's canon arrival. Seriously, the anime is a mess there: it's show the BK wait to move until they start killing hostages and arrive they could do it again. But fact is, you need two hours on car from Tokyo to Kawaguchi. Sorry, but I am sticking with real time here in this quest.

What about a Car driven by an Exalted with Drive 5?

Ok, got a plan written up. I've decided that going in through the front like in canon is probably the best path. Going in as Granfield risks possibly getting stuck there, if Clovis asks us to stay, so doing that probably won't work.

[X] Plan Use The Front Door

Preparations
1. Deattune your Stormwand (3 peripheral motes freed) - nonlethal is not likely be useful today, and the spare motes could be otherwise useful.

2. Use Loom-Snarling Deception in advance from your peripheral pool to change your form under your mask to appear as a heavily scarred individual whose race is not readily identifiable, but could be Japanese, Britannian, or of mixed blood. This will be useful in the unlikely events of being captured or otherwise being forced to unmask. In addition, use Eldritch Secrets Mastery to change the aspect of your Essence to match that of an Air Aspect Dragonblooded, so that if you have to use Essence visibly anyone checking will not likely think you to be anathema.

3. Call up your cult and have some of them go to Lake Kawaguchi and have them send their demons in to discreetly gather intelligence before your arrival, both in the Britannian camp and the hotel. The main items of interest are the location in which the hostages are being held and any special VIPs you should be aware of to help with manipulating Clovis to let you through. Xibhi, or another Passion Moray, should also discreetly let Milly know that you're coming and that she should do her best to keep the situation calm with her abilities. Nathan will also go to a location he can quickly leave to help with intel gathering by attempting to hack into Britannia's military network to see if he can find anything, such as intel or building plans.

4. You'll need some plastic explosives. Bring some.

5. The W-0 Unit commanded by Leila and Kallen in the Guren Mk II will be your emergency backup. They'll be close enough by that they can respond to a call for assistance or help with extraction upon mission success if needed.

Phase 1: Gaining Entry to the Hotel
1. After getting the intel, you'll need a news van with a camera so you can make a later broadcast. Have one or two of your stealthier allies steal one from the news crews.

2. Once you're ready, you as Zero will boldly stand on top of the news van as it drives up to the main gain. Inside will be any combat Exalts who volunteer for the job (dressed as Black Knights, and only if we think they can be sufficiently discreet and patient [Akio may be ill suited for this mission]) and an appropriate number of Black Knights. Your combat capable demons will also be following you dematerialized. When you get close to the bridge you expect you'll be surrounded, and then you will demand to speak with Clovis if he's not already present. From there, you'll convince him to let you through.

-Arguments: You will boldly and confidently argue that you should be allowed into the hotel, claiming you will save the hostages from the JLF as is your duty what with being allies of justice. The JLF are those in the wrong today, having taken innocent civilians hostage, but you believe you can convince them to release the hostages if you're allowed through to talk them down. Inform him that your own intelligence indicates that Kusakabe is a loose canon in the JLF, as evidenced by handing Clovis this opportunity to completely destroy the JLF's reputation, and as such you believe it's only a matter of time before Kusakabe starts executing hostages. Namedrop any noteworthy hostages you found out about to further convince Clovis. Argue further that Clovis has nothing to lose by letting you try - if you succeed the hostages will be saved and Clovis can spin the decision to let you through in his favor, and if you fail Clovis will have bought time for his own people to prepare their own rescue operation while the JLF are talking to you. It's win-win for him. (should be Manipuation + Presence roll)

-Charm Use: Four uses of Second Oramus Excellency to make yourself more convincing. One use of Words That Twist Like Daggers to give Clovis a delusion that allowing you through is the only viable option. Throw in an extra stunt dice from your stunt dice pool. (being unnaturally fascinating probably will help too)

-Stunt: The stolen news van approaches the Britannian forces, with you riding atop it. You are the enigmatic vigilante Zero, and you have ignored all conventions by seemingly making yourself vulnerable to men who might well arrest you. Your chariot comes to a stop, and you confidently flourish your mantle and take a posture that hides all doubt. "Clovis la Brittannia, I am Zero, and I would save the innocents taken hostage by the JLF!"

-Contingency: While you're making your arguments, you'll have your demons in key positions to kill people piloting Knightmare frames and other vehicles if it comes to combat. Your combat Exalts will leave the van and help fight any footsoldiers. Call in your emergency support if needed. If possible take Clovis hostage, but otherwise just cross the bridge by force - the JLF will likely let you through given they've seen Britannia attack you at this point.

Phase 2: Kill Idiot, Rescue Hostages

1. Some of your demons will go to where the hostages are, and in an emergency they'll kill off the JLF who threaten them, but otherwise stay dematerialized.

2. You will meet with Kusakabe and use your powers and a short but passionate speech to convince him of the wrongness of his actions, and attempt to get him to commit seppuku to "restore his honor". Failing that, you'll just have your Anhules quickly (and silently, if possible) kill him and any of his men in the room, and then try to make it look like a suicide. From there you should be able to convince the rest of the JLF to stand down and let you free the hostages. (dice pool is probably Manipulation + Performance)

- Charm Use - Use Words That Twist Like Daggers to give Kusakabe hallucinations that ghosts of his dead ancestors, comrades, mentors, or other relevant people are present in the room and that they are looking him with a mix of shame, disapproval, and anger. If needed supplement this with a second social attack powered by the same Charm to add an Emotion Trigger Derangement. The emotion will be "self-loathing" and the trigger will be "seeing Zero". (Kusakabe is very likely a normal mortal, and thus can't resist the Unnatural Mental Influence of the Charm)

- Stunt: "Kusakabe Josui, I have come to inform you that your actions today have dishonored yourself and your men." You intone, using your anger at your friends being taken hostage to add an edge to your voice. "Taking your men into almost certain death in an operation not approved of by your superior might be forgiven, but you have taken innocent women and children hostage, used them as your shields. This is cowardice unbefitting of a warrior of Japan! You have sullied the honor of not only the Japanese Liberation Front, but the very Japanese people who you claim your actions serve! That bastard Clovis will use this opportunity to destroy the JLF's reputation worldwide, to give them confirmation that the Japanese are the savage barbarians Britannia claims us to be, to justify their occupation and oppression!" You reach into your mantle, and pull out an ordinary sheathed tanto, tossing it to the man across from you. "There is only one recourse to restore your honor, Kusakabe Josui." He appears to be about to say something in retort, but his eyes go wide as he begins to see things that aren't there.

Phase 3: GTFO

Just do what Zero did in canon - blow the top of the building to cover your escape with the hostages, make a speech on camera, go home.

@Alexander89 - let me know if there are any issues with this, and if the stunts are at least two dice.

Everyone else, the usual criticism and suggestions are welcome.

I'd prefer some addition for what we might want to do if there's supernatural enemies around.

Aside from "bring demons and Exalts" I'm not sure what else we can plan to do. We have our own supernatural forces, so if it comes down to a fight with unexpected supernatural forces we can only really react with what we have on hand.
