Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

And Shadow Spite Curse lights up all nemesis infected persons everywhere in the world. For a couple of seconds, yes, but still. For the cheap price of 8 XP we get to ruin Nemesis forever.
That and the banishment charm will be a lot of fun. I want to watch an extradimensional hive mind lose its shit because we keep poking it while it's busy.

The only thing that'd be better is if we could actually somehow eat the damn thing, but I'm pretty sure DP meant that a hypothetical ascended primordial!Molly could do that rather than it being something we could achieve during the quest.

Still, bullying outsiders has no downsides. If at all possible I'd also like to play with this charm out at the gates:

Barren Waste inFliCtion (••••)
Breathing out the very Essence of the Hell of Bur-
rowing Maggots into the world, the Infernal summons a plague of spirit-maggots that devour everything around her, and then when nothing else remains, devour one another. What is left behind is a landscape barren of life, covered in dust and sand and pitted stone.
System: Spend 5 Essence to summon the maggots to assail the landscape within 10 yards of the Infernal. They're of no particular threat to any living creature that isn't somehow immobilized and unable to move away from them, but will devour all plant life within minutes. What's left behind is a place of desolation – and, in its reflection in the Spirit World, a tainted place that calls out to wicked spirits to come forth and take up residence. The Infernal reduces the difficulty of all rolls by one within her wasteland.
She can grow a wasteland by either using this Charm again, or else through sacrifices within its boundaries. The murder of a human being expands the waste by another 10 yards in all directions. The murder of a su- pernatural being (that is not a creature of darkness) such as a mage or werewolf increases its radius by 100 yards. The flesh of sacrificed beings erupts into boiling mag- gots, which range out through the wasteland to do their work once they reach its border. Alternately, rather than expanding the radius, such a sacrifice may be used to "roll back" the number of times the Infernal is consid- ered to have attempted to don her Shintai form during the current story by one, reducing its cost or difficulty accordingly (to a minimum of Essence 2, Willpower 2, and no roll requirement).
Sacrifices can be conducted by either the Infernal herself, or else by servants she has suborned with De- monic Primacy of Essence, Maggot Mana Plague, or Verdant Emptiness Endowment.
If the character knows The King and the King- dom, she may pay 5 Essence during a sacrifice. Doing so prevents the wasteland from growing, and instead transforms it, bit by bit, into a physical incarnation of her inner Hell-realm. After one such sacrifice, the wasteland displays only subtle touches of the Infernal's Kingdom, but after ten such blasphemies, it becomes a perfect Hell on Earth. The sacrifice of a supernatural being is worth five lesser sacrifices for this purpose.
Signature Effect: While standing within the boundaries of her wasteland, the Infernal may assume her Shintai form automatically, without the need of an Essence or Willpower expenditure or a dice roll. How- ever, doing so reduces the area of desolation's borders by 100 yards. If this destroys its power outright, then the Infernal loses 3 points of Willpower upon return- ing to her normal form

We talked about how the lack of wyld shaping charms makes invading the unspeakable madness beyond reality on a permanent basis a pain, but this one might sort of count.

Infinite outsider mook spam == infinite high quality blood sacrifices for branding our hell into the face of the Outside.

Edit:

It would be a mighty blow, but Nemesis built its network from nothing, it can do so again given time.

This also is assuming that everything goes well. In Nemesis's position, I would use the Identification as an excuse for more coordination. I would claim that my netwrok are a group of unrelated individuals who are being targeted by an infernal with screams of outsiders to cover a bloody power grab. Molly can't be everywhere and a civil war between those fighting Nemesis and those it can convince to side against the new devil is an easy method of damage control.
This comes down to where we first demonstrate the ability and how we use it.

The winter court is functionally the biggest active supernatural power in the mortal world and they exist for the purpose of keeping the outside out. Demonstrate that SSC on a known nemesis agent has even a tiny chance of lighting up another and they'd probably kill anyone so afflicted even if there was a chance of false positives.

Summer is supposed to stop them from going crazy with stuff like that, but if they buy in too then you better be god damn Drakul if you want to file a complaint about it.

There's also the white god to consider. The outsiders don't have a sweetheart deal like hell does, so heaven doesn't have to play as nice.

I'm still looking for the exact WoJ on this, but I recall something to the effect that nemesis can actually hide from Uriel and that this ability is a critical part of how it stays in operation.

He probably wouldn't dust off his Old Testament stomping boots in most cases, but Mysterious Ways are a hell of a drug.

The Winter Court is functionality one player amongst many in the mortal world. Summer is an exact peer to it there. That's because the Winter Court can't deploy that majority of its strength away from the Outer Gates, because then the Outsiders win.

Mab can use this fact to hold the world to ransom by refusing to do her job, and it essentially makes herself the load bearing boss for the world, as she's and the Winter Court are an essentially necessary evil.

That wasn't always true. Odin and the Norse Gods once held the outer gates, and before them other pantheons did.

The problem is that most other supernatural forces don't have the numbers or organisation to replace her. That's where Molly comes in. With the right choices for her hell, she can have an army of ten billion loyal devils armed with magitech equipment. She can make Mab and the Winter Court an unnecessary evil. Then that evil can be smote.

Winter isn't just holding the world hostage; it's plenty bad ass even with its core defense forces. Whatever the case used to be, they're the big players now. Odin and the other people who used to be above them aren't just sitting at home, their power has been reduced.

I'm not saying that winter could take the whole planet at once, but there are the 800 pound gorilla here. It would cost them in a number of ways, but stopping them from doing it would require a plurality of major factions to cooperate for supernatural WW3 - including guys who'd probably side with winter anyway.

This is especially true because anti-outsider ops are one of the things that legitimately allow them to use their broader military resources.

They're also not stupid; Mab wouldn't send trolls to crash white council meetings, but uncooperative powers might suddenly face a plague of powerful shape shifting fey assassins.

I'm game for going after the outside in their place; turning the outer gates into a glorified buffet to fuel Molly's ascension past the essence cap sounds like a great time.

It just doesn't have anything to do with the strength of the nations involved right now.

The Summer Court alone is explicitly their peer when it comes to forces they can afford to deploy away from the Outer Gates. They're not the 800 pound gorillas, they're one chimp in the troupe if they don't choose to destroy the world by leaving the Outer Gates unguarded.

No one who can take her outright in a straight fight would be willing to try it. The best they could hope for is that the outcome for them would be slightly less hideous than it would be for Mab.
Think of it… oh, in terms of nuclear-capable nations. If someone has nukes, you don't start sending guys in tanks over their borders. Sure, Russia probably COULD take India in a straight fight, but they WON'T. India's got nukes. That radically changes the decision tree.
You don't fight nuclear nations head on. You defend yourself against them, sure, but if you want to go on the offensive, you have to do it through very unconventional means (say, flying planes into buildings) or you hit them economically or diplomatically, or interfere with their interests in lower-stakes arenas (the way we did with Russia in Afghanistan in the 80s).
You can beat a nuclear nation, don't get me wrong. But it doesn't get done through simple, direct force of arms.

All of that, of course, assumes that Mab is standing there alone, outside of Faerie, and not commanding an entire nation, literally millions and millions and millions of nightmarish creatures of every description. Which she does.

There's a REASON that when Mab said, "Sign these Accords and abide by them," people listened
The thing you're missing is that the fey aren't a barely there force hanging on by the threat of opening the gates. The fey are physically incapable of breaking their word; a feature that was almost certainly baked in to stop them from doing that.

Their power comes from their home guard, civilian support population, and supernatural terrain advantage.

For the most part the other supernatural powers of earth are effectively NGOs with nukes, and the fey are a nation states to match any global mortal power in numbers alone.

The reds are one of the few factions that aren't and they're were still unwilling to face winter without doing the equivalent of setting up someone else to nuke them first, nuke them a few times directly, then send in their armies.

You don't have to like them, they certainly do a lot to earn animosity, but they didn't get where they are collecting bottle caps or by threatening murder-suicide to force international cooperation.

Look at the quote:

No one who can take her outright in a straight fight would be willing to try it. The best they could hope for is that the outcome for them would be slightly less hideous than it would be for Mab.

There are people that could throw down with Mab and her millions of Winter Fey and although their shit would be screwed, Mab would be worse off. I don't believe your second quote directly applies to your first.

That's not the description on the 800lb gorilla.

Yes, Mab can force them to sigh the Accords, but that's because if she's willing to push it she could probably ensure that the result is basically MAD. She's just applying madman theory, that other people aren't sure whether she really pull down the gates of the temple on her own head as well as everyone else's.

Look back at the WoJ on this. It explicitly states that it's Mab alone against other factions as collectives.

It's even in the post you quoted.

No, it's two different questions to him.

Also, note this:

I was wondering if Mab was the first Winter Queen?
No. Mab was not the first Mab. Mab was originally Winter Lady, and Lea was her Jenny Greenteeth. She was her sidekick and handmaiden. And so when Mab got promoted Lea did too. So she got to be much more powerful and awesome. But that was a while back. When that happened. And the same thing with Titania. The Winter Queens actually died. The last time things got awful in the wizard world. So things are about to get awful in the wizard world again and they're a bit nervous. They're a bit nervous about Dresden. Well, Titania is very nervous about Dresden. Mab is keeping her enemies close.

The Winter Queen (and the equally powerful Summer Queen), managed to get themselves killed and replaced last time the wizards went to war with themselves.

Perhaps the invincibility and irreplaceability of Mab is being a tad overplayed.

OK, lets try courtesy on the malicious spirit cats

I'm aware they're two different questions. I was snipping different relevant parts.

The point being to demonstrate that winter is a nation state and most of the other players who are actually active on the planet are NGOs with nukes at best.

This isn't about Mab being impossible to defeat, it's about the structure of international politics for the supernatural world.

Also worth noting that winter queens dying like that tends to be the result of a pile up of silly bullshit that wizards are good about ending up in the middle of.

Dresden killing the summer Lady, for example, involved a shitload of powerful groups like the outsiders screwing around mixed with court politics. Knowing a winter queen died isn't the same as saying the white council is a proper peer to the fey.

Which is why trying a direct fight is WoJ something that would require the entire council and significant leverage to try, but they still manage to be a problem.

The power hurdles in the DF are pretty steep. One tier up from the fey and the weakest guys around are star busting angels, and winter only matters when it can rules lawyer its way to survival.

A fight with a full dragon flight ( that is, one Dragon and their offspring like Dresden saw that one time), various spirit kings in the nevernever, those guys are the proper peer group to the courts and the people the home guard of the fey is means to deal with.

It's just that 99% of the time the only people who give a crap about the mortal world are the top and bottom of the power scale.

No one who matters would care to stop a mole hunt like this.

Summer is also a nation.

The Red Court is a nation.

The Fomor are by all appearances a nation.

The Svartelves seem like they may be as well, given that IIRC they have embassies and such like.

If the Jade Court are like the Wan Kuei Courts, they also strongly resemble nations.

Several of the Yama Kings' kingdoms are literally kingdoms with all the trimmings.

Still confused as to why nobody is willing to swat the fly buzzing in your face.
Costs nothing to be polite would be the main reason in my book.

Unless he's got a good trick up his sleeve we can always switch to blending him later, and having a reputation for not immediately smiting people even when they're being little shits can be helpful.

How about we drop this? It's pretty clear neither of us is really convinced of the other's case at this point, and circling is just a frustrating way to clutter the thread.

We can take another swing when it becomes relevant in quest and we have more information about the fusion setting. Or drop the fusion bits and take it to a general DF discussion thread, but I don't know off hand if there's one of those running right now.

Arc 4 Post 18: Neighbor's Greetings
Neighbor's Greetings

13th of August 2006 A.D.

Familiar is the weight of the crown upon your brow, familiar as your own two eyes those peering out of the flames, seeking the rest of the pack and though you do not find them you notice the grills that lead to air vents above, more than large enough for a spirit can to slip through after their claws slice through the rotted plastic coverings. Only three of them though so it will take a whole for the whole pride of them to be upon you.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 5/12

Malks like lions run in prides and woe betide the fool who compares them to something so lowly as wolf or dog. Speaking of dogs Mouse is being surprisingly sneaky for his size staying out of sight behind a pile of old pipes. Sneaky enough to escape the blood-tinged eyes of a malk? Hopefully you will not have reason to find out

"Be not afraid, winterfae. You shall come to no harm at my hands here as long as you offer no violence in return. Name yourself, and your pack, and explain why you come here unbidden to make accusations of falsehood to one who has not met you before."

"Afraid? You think that fear is a whip on our backs servant of hollow night? It is your curs should know fear, fear of ripping flesh and souls torn free. You shall have the pleasure of their company in your foul realm soon enough. Tell me did you tell them what a few moments' warmth was worth?"

No sooner had the malk made the threat that your hand itches for the hilt of your sword but the spirit-cat's words leave you blinking in confusion, fiery eyes seeming to twinkle almost like eldritch candles in the wind. Then it hits you, they think you are a servant of Emma-O, some Akuma of Kakuri Yomi maybe, come to ensnare the ghouls with false salvation that you might use them for your own aims and then discard them.

"I extracted no price of Adam and his fellows save that they live in peace with mortals and immortals alike and guard this place which I have sworn to see put to rights before its guardians. I serve none but myself and I seek enmity with none who do not seek it with me." You keep your tone matter of fact, not a threat, but also not-not a threat.

"Your words are soft as silk, yet silk might bear poison to the dagger. Why should we trust your word... thief."

If you had heard that word from the mouth of a servant of winter three weeks ago you might have gotten defensive, angry, afraid maybe, but this is not three weeks ago. You had looked into the eyes of Queen Mab and you did not break her gaze, you had battled the intrusion of Iku-Turso kin-yet-not to her and you had sworn yourself to guard Sarah and the others.

"If you refer to what which I found and which found me in Arctis Tor then you might better call it a mutually assisted escape and in that I think the Germans have a point." Non sequiturs for the win. You wonder how Daniel if going to react to the fact that you took his advice on icebreaking from a few months back with a predatory fey feline.

"The Germans?"Now it's the malk's turn to be confused, better by far than hostile.

"Yes, you see they consider freedom to be a basic human instinct so it's not illegal to try to break out of prison, they do not give you more years just for trying."

"You claim that you are human?"

Don't giggle Molly, don't giggle. Serious face engaged. Somehow you manage it in spite of the sudden cuteness of the fey-cat looking at you with wide eyes, whiskers twitching wildly. "Yes."

"What of the thing you bear?" He presses, you are pretty sure it's a tomcat

"It was... designed for human hands, for human souls." You pause and look down at the fey in askance. "Having revealed so much of myself I would know whom I speak to." Though your voice is still soft as you make the demand your gaze grows sharper. Cats can smell a sucker and you do not think man-smart and magical ones are any less capable of it.

"You may call me Chapalu, it is the more... recent of my nom de guerre." He pauses for a moment, closing his eyes in thought, or perhaps in communion with his fellows. "It seems I have misjudged your nature if not your deeds. You did... escape besides that which had been held as a treasure of Winter. For us to allow you to freely claim territory abutting ours would be a stain upon our honor yet perhaps a challenge less onerous than war can be arranged. One of your new servants send out for us to hunt, let's say with an hour's head-start and whatever tools or weapons they may wish. If they can keep ahead of us for seven hours than we will count the sport tribute enough. if not their blood will do I suppose."

It would, you remind yourself, be wasteful of time and Essence if I answer that 'offer' with my sword.

"No." You do not elaborate, a fact which seems to unnerve Chapalu more perhaps than even an explicit threat would have .

"You have much confidence about their skills to pass through the dark then?" The words are tossed out as if without a care in the world, but there is a brittleness to them. You can probably force a peace on sheer intimidation but not without resentment.

What do you do?

I am very tempted to go with "You are bargaining well beyond your station, little hunter. Your queen I would talk with as an equal, you though? Mayhaps it is I that shall hunt you for the next day, and see how you like it". Because they are reaching well beyond their station, and are treating us like a sucker. And we should be talking to Maeve at least, not these two-bit rat catchers. Hmm... rat catchers... Ok, let's bargain.

[X] Make another offer, a sane one. The Jade Dogs could use friendly neighbors
-[X] Use the crown to find out its true name
-[X] Use intimidation excellency
-[X] STUNT: The eyes of your crown focus on the malk's shape, green flames casting eerie shadows on the corridor's walls. Frost that isn't kin to Winter permeates the air as you speak: "Bold you are, *insert true name here* also called Chapalu, to demand tribute of me, and to call me a thief, when your Queen would not do so. I will forget this insult and propose another bargain - swear that you shall bring no harm to this place or its dwellers, and serve here for a year and a day, as your mortal kin served mortal dwellings since times immemorial, hunting vermin. In exchange, I shall provide you with food fitting king's table, and gift upon you armor fitting your form. What say you, *insert true name*?"

I want an excuse to craft cat armor. Use of true name, even without inflections, and intimidation excellency are to show that no, we are not a sucker.

And we aren't gonna kill all fae down here your making a bigger enemy even if it's one we could possibly handle for no reason.
