Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Arc 10 Post 27: One Winter Eve
One Winter Eve

18th of December 2006 A.D.

As snow drifts slowly downward over the city glazing stately facades in ice, setting brows of white over traffic lights, icicles jingling improbably sharp above he porches of old Tudor houses and ever green garlands sprout on doors and over them, around windows and and even nailed around garages you wonder what Santa might be doing you whisper low under your breath a nonsense rhyme, blowing out candles green and black and gold as you walk down the dusty workshop wrapped in fae guise by the hour.

Two dozen Kabouter slide forth, from under tables, behind chairs, spaces that would have seemed too small for even a mouse, tools in hand, of carpentry and joinery, of blacksmithing and glassblowing. Were you but to give the word, they'd make a fairy tale tree from slice of axe to setting the star. The first among them, the well named Crinkle-Brow bows low enough for the pointed red hat to sweep the ground. "Your will Lady of the Green Flame?"

To think you won't be able to tell the jawas their gifts will be made by actual elves, the things honor asks of me, your cheeks hurt a little from smiling. Thoughts from from the plain and mundane to the magical swirl though your mind like the gusts of snow pressing against the window. You could pass Daniel your car or just get him a new one, you could pick up Part One of Naruto from Mathew or the whole catalogue of integrated Entertainment holo-vids curated for his interests or...

There is a clink at the window as though the chill wind had suddenly learned to hold a tune and the breaking icicles to fell in measured meter. As you look up you see a woman who seems to be about your age wearing jean shorts accentuated with blue butterfly clips of improbable craftsmanship and a white t-shirt that seems frozen on. Though you do not recognize the face framed in lazy icy blonde curls you recognize the look in ice cold eyes, the slow knowing smile that is Mona Lisa and Jack the Ripper at the same time.. Maeve was not minded to wait for a visit, she had decided to pay one of her own.

It is at this point that most people would be considering the nearest exit, or making a new one. Good thing you are not most people. You gesture at the spirits whose presence she had likely followed here then to the tool in their hands. 'Are you sure you want to walk into a workshop?' The question without words hangs between you.

She motions at her t-shirt, the ice flakes and cracks. 'What do you think it's going to stain?'

A shrug. 'Fair point.'

So you let the Lady in, not so much out of the cold, it's too useful to banish, but out of the snow at least and bid her welcome, proffering in the place of grim talk relating to your last meeting your most sincere apologies that you could not provide her with a hunt among the clouds of Faerie since Duchess Adrianna proved to be such an unsporting quarry.

Lost 1 Essence -> Now at 14/15 (Etiquette Excellency)

"You are not what I was expecting," she says airily.

"Good, I'd hate to be boring," you shoot back.

"Whotcha doin'?" she asks eerily like a little kid asking to be entertained.

"Planning Christmas presents."

"Well you know what they say tis the season to sacrifice..." She pauses, tips her head. "I guess they say it's better to give than to receive these days when mortals so love to mince words."

What gifts do you get your family?

Hmm, now that I think of it - are Mab and/or Maeve Christian in this setting? I mean, the timing is borderline for them to be, I think. Or are they pagans?

I seem to recall that Maeve said that she wasn't going to see us again until she was ready to fight common enemies. Which so does she have a lead on Nickleheads or red Court?

Mab has done things like call the romans who tortured Jesus amateurs before, so not exactly.

I don't think they worship anything in particular. They acknowledged gods exist but they don't pray, they make deals.

I still think that if we exchange gifts with Winter queens, then we should balance it out by doing so with Summer queens. Doesn't need to be wonderfully personalized, but something pleasant enough.

In order of reading the underlined errors are:

hat not had

the gusts of snow not the gusts snow

Integrated Entertainment not integrated Entertainment

Doubled up on the word presence.

Underlined in order of reading:

and instead of ad

Faerie instead of faerie

The most telling detail we know on that point about Mab is that the father of Maeve and Sarissa is an 'Austrian Composer', strongly implied to have written compositions regarding her. The best option for this given their age is probably Franz Schubert, who wrote a series of songs about faeries, including one based around the story of the Lady of the Lake written by Walter Scott. (Yes, THAT Lady of the Lake).

Notably, in the songs Schubert wrote, the Lady of the Lake does pray to the Virgin Mary, and presumably Mab would have had a lot input into whether this was included in the song. So it seems likely at one time Mab was Christian, given she didn't mind the personal reference.

Whether that means Mab was Morgana or Nimue or the two are the same? Eh.

Very good point think Harry can give us any advice on what the new summer lady might like?

IIRC, exchanging gifts with the Fey outright requires them to reciprocate, right? And with a gift of equal or greater value?I

If that's the case, maybe we shouldn't be giving them too many gifts, or gifts of high value. It's one thing to be expected to reciprocate, but another thing entirely to be forced to do so by your very nature.

The quest is running under a slightly different background. Mab was Morgana, but her kids' father was Merlin instead of some random muggle:
Mantle escaped and it found Morgana for she was the most skillful in sorcery and boldest in war but uneasy did it rest upon her shoulders for though she had never known a man in the strictly physical sense Merlin her lover was sired by an incubus and possessed the power to join with her in soul and in mind." He stops for a moment. "One strange turn begat another for from that joining Morgana-not-yet-Mab fell heavy with child, children in fact twins. One is Meave, now Winter Lady and one is Sarissa whom I last knew as a cup bearer many centuries ago."

thats why I prefer the novelty drinks if we send anything. They're low key enough to be easy to repay and not annoying to receive. All fey love novelty after all.

It's not a problem so long as you leave open a clear channel by which they can repay you that doesn't cost them much. For winter having common enemies tends to add quite a bit of grease to the wheels.

The fey are more familiar than anyone else with the concept of debt traps. Giving them gifts of significance in a manner they can't refuse in what they see as an effort to force them to reciprocate tends to go poorly.

It's not really relevant for minor stuff, but we should avoid that perception where possible if we want to avoid trouble with them.

I feel like the post you just quoted addresses everything you just said so I don't know what to add.

Edit: Ok thought so something that might make it more clear: The bases of all friendly trade is both parties giving something easy for them to obtain that they value little in exchange for something harder for them to obtain that they value more well the reverse position is held by the other side.

This seems obvious to me but I might just be assuming.

My point was that the fey don't like it when people try to trick them into deals even though they do it to everyone else. A clear repayment mechanism is better than no repayment mechanism, but if they think you gave a gift with the intent of pushing them into doing something specific in return without actually bartering for it specifically they get pissy. Unless of course both parties are doing it on purpose for the sake of loophole abuse, because fey make everything more complicated than it needs to be, but that isn't relevant here.

Your point about trade isn't wrong, but it also isn't relevant. It's a faux pas to treat gift giving like involuntary bartering.

You are thinking like a human. For fey every interaction is bartering. It can't be avoided. If they were offended by people giving them stuff then they simply couldn't function.

This isn't human thinking, it's a fey thing. Gift-debt and reciprocation is fine, but if they think you're trying to force claims on them for the purposes of manipulation they get upset.

They're particular about the obligations they put on their books precisely because they're so bound by them.

For Mab and Maeve we could weave a dress out of ice. Minor enchantment to prevent it from melting easily, and their own power would keep it unmelted.
I dont really see the point in attempting to compete with the Winter Fae in their own area of specialty.
Looking back over it I thought we'd be giving Lydia an essence battery for christmas.
After we look it over and figure out how to duplicate it.
