Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

Thats not the same thing as saying that wizards lack lethal/agg soak. Listens to Wind certainly wont keep throwing himself into melee with naagloshii and Titans without lethal/agg soak.
Even if Mages have no native Lethal/Agg soak, they do have magic for that.

Listens-to-Wind transformed into a bus-sized monster can certainly soak anything, because high-tier self-transformations can give you that kind of soak.
Just like a Mage with a different style might cast stoneskin to soak lethal, or someone like Ebenezer with his mastery of energy could easily have a Forces-based effect that lets him soak anything by bleeding off kinetic or other energy barely before it touches his skin/clothes or something like that.

Phyiscally Wizards are nearly human and don't soak lethal or Agg, but with the right spells I would certainly give them easy access to scene-long Soak Enhancers.

I mean when I say that they are squishy I'm talking about without magic their base bodies are squishy. Like you keep bringing up magics which of course they'd use it's like a more intrinsic weapon they have on call with their mind. I'm not saying they can't fight these things or nothing just that without actively using magic most of them are as squishy as a fairly fit dude.
Even with the ability to soak lethal/agg with stamina?
They ARE squishy. Certainly in the Dresdenverse, where ghouls can lose half their limbs and keep going, where Whampires can heal shotgun blasts to the knees in combat time, and even pixies like Toot-Toot can get swatted by a naagloshii and survive.

Most wizards are in normal human Stamina range.
They fall sick, they can be poisoned; we've seen both happen onscreen
Lethal/agg soak applies mostly to combat trauma.

For reference, this was the list of Harry's major onscreen injuries prior to Peace Talks/Battlegrounds:
Dresden Major Injuries List Storm Front to Skin Game said:
Storm Front:

  • Hit in head with baseball bat, fell down stairs. Probable concussion.
  • Beaten up again
  • Shot (hip)
  • In shock to the point that Morgan gives him CPR (despite what you might see on TV when you need CPR things are really bad and there will probably be permanent damage)
  • Several days in the hospital
Fool Moon:

  • Shot (shoulder). Lost a ton of blood, unconscious for most of a day (giant red flag).
  • Dives out of moving car (with gunshot shoulder) while on wizard meth
  • Viscously beaten by Lycanthropes
  • Major blow to the head from Denton
Grave Peril:

  • Slammed into a stone column head first (immediately healed by Lea)
  • Almost strangled to death
  • Poisoned
  • Beaten by superhuman vampires
  • Technically killed and revived with CPR (again, extremely bad for you)
  • At least four days in the hospital
Summer Knight:

  • Knocked unconscious by an ogre for an indeterminable amount of time (despite what Hollywood says if you are knocked out for more than a few seconds it is serious, a severe concussion at a minimum)
  • Nearly drowned
  • Another nasty blow to the head in faerie battle
Death Masks:

  • Pistol whipped unconscious for an indeterminable amount of time
  • Plague cursed (for only a short while, but with many different diseases running through his system at once)
  • Shot (Not quite sure where, but disabled his left arm i.e. left arm, shoulder or upper torso)
Blood Rites:

  • Nice knock to the back of the head, from a confused Inari (incapacitated for a minute or two, possible concussion)
  • Severely burned hand
  • Lots of nasty sounding hits over the course of several fights, probable broken ribs
Dead Beat:

  • Throwing star to to calf
  • Clubbed in the back of the head, temporarily incapacitating him (possible concussion)
  • Sliced across the belly, lot of blood loss
Proven Guilty:

  • Car crash (definitely concussion)
  • Knocked unconscious with a tire iron for at least an hour
White Knight:

  • Thrown by car bomb (despite what Hollywood says being that close to a bomb will do damage, even without shrapnel)
  • Psychic head butt, unconscious for several hours
  • Nearly drowned, in shock and unconscious for at least an hour after
  • Psychic attack and Lash's sacrifice, resulting in minor brain damage
Small Favor:

  • Broken nose from Gruffs
  • Car crash
  • Bad hypothermia
  • Nearly drowned
Turn Coat:

  • Major car crash
  • Head slammed into wall
  • Blast from a concussion grenade
  • Slashed across face, nearly loses left eye
  • Slashed in right arm with dagger, major blood loss
  • In the Edinburgh infirmary for a week
Changes:

  • Thrown into garbage can by a major bomb blast
  • Battered around by the Ick
  • Back broken, lower body paralysis (Accepts mantle of the winter knight, all previous injuries healed by Mab. Endurance, resistance to injury, pain threshold and healing all enhanced.)
  • Shot in the chest (through the heart knowing Kincaid's accuracy)
Ghost Story:

  • Spends 6 months in a coma
Cold Days:

  • God/Jim only knows how many injuries from Mab's school of hard knocks
  • Bomb blast/car crash
  • Severe beating from Ace
  • Bomb blast number two in the warehouse
  • Head smashed through heavy duty boat windows, and slammed against steel wall by Cat Sith
Skin Game:

  • Shot in right calf
  • Left Arm broken by super-ghoul
  • Battered by the Genoskwa, at first slammed into wall, later smashed into car hard enough to bend metal
I'm sure I missed a few, but damn. This isn't even counting all the relatively minor injuries (or short stories and comics), the list would be several times longer. I count at least ten instances of head trauma where a concussion is the best case scenario. Shot five times.

Wizard healing (and later Winter Knight healing) are basically the only reason Harry isn't dealing with tons of permanent damage. I get the Jim loves to torture Harry (and by extension all of us), and I don't like it when characters never get hurt, but when I list it all out like that it seems a bit gratuitous.

None of this counts his mental scars, between all the injuries, emotional trauma in childhood, the horrible stuff he's seen with his Sight, and the sheer terror of many situations he's been in he should have horrible PTSD, to the level of being barely functional. There's a good WOJ where he discusses how Harry has terrible PTSD. I really want Jim to explore this in future novels. I really liked how in Dead Beat Harry can't use fire magic and has brief flashbacks to burning his hand when fire is mentioned.

Yes, they have wizard healing, but like I said, wizard healing repairs stuff after the fact.
Without better than vanilla human toughness, there wont be an after the fact.
Just looking at Dresden's record here.

So here is how @DragonParadox is ruling on GSNF. As in this is how he explained and rolled it.

Say Bob has 15 soak. Molly attacks and rolls and does, say, 5 agg damage. Bob soaks agg, so he then rolls his entire 15 soak and gets 4 sux, meaning Molly does 1 dmg.

As it is a successful damage, she spends reflexively spends 1 Essence for GSNF and does 5 agg damage, no rolls needed. Bob then, again, rolls his entire 15 Soak again against the 5 agg damage, ignoring the result of the previous sux. He rolls soak and gets 5 sux. So GSNF does no damage.

So Bob rolls soak twice, once against the normal attack that did damage and once against GSNF.

Which I think is against the intent of the charm. As per the bolded part, the radiation erupts, literally from within the character's wounds and internal injuries should not be soaked. At the barest minimum, Armor soak should not apply as it is completely bypassing armor.

I agree that this damage really should not be soaked separately and given how (a) precious Essence is, (b) 3 Dot Charm, (c) Mechanics and Flavor text, (d) Most high level characters can soak Agg, (e) The Solar and Sidereal versions add to damage rolls and not separate rolls, it is not intended to and should not be soak able.

Here is the Solar and Sidereal charms.

So both the Solar and Sideral versions add to Damage roll rather than do damage seperately. The Solar version is also a 3 DOT charm.

@DragonParadox To add to the discussion, GSNF does not say add to roll because it specifically requests you to do damage.

In the Solar version the soak roll is still pending and the charm Adds to that roll.

But GSNF is different in that it requests you to do at least 1 dmg. Meaning the Soak roll has already been defeated.

That is the difference. It requires you to defeat the soak roll to do agg damage. Because it makes no sense otherwise.

There is literally no damage adder charm that requires you to roll soak twice for different damage. Literally every charm is concluded in one roll.

The Solar version is a do not loose charm whereas the Infernal version is a win harder charm, aimed at regenerators like Lunars.

Because, due to the prohibitive Essence cost, rolling Soak twice for attacks with GSNF is a massive nerf as no other charm has this treatment.

You know what, fair, I had not considered the comparison to the Solar Charm and you are in a world where a lot of things have very good regen or could get it, so it's not like you can use it to burn off Nicodemous arm and make it stick on a whim. Ruling changed.

1)Listens to Wind transforming into a van-sized bear seems more a matter of lots of temporary HLs rather than lots ofextra soak.
But since we're not playing a wizard, we dont really have to figure it out.

2)Thats the point in dispute.

We have a limited sample size of wizards we see with combat injury: Ramirez surviving injury at Dead Beat, and again a throwing knife from Malvolo going through armor at several hundred kilometers an hour. Luccio surviving a through and through stabbing with a sword. Listens to Wind walking off a broken arm. Morgan's tougness in Turn Coat. Dresden being a literal punching bag,

But all of them seem consistently tougher than can be accounted for by simply extremes of human toughness.
IMO.
Thats my two cents.
In fairness while definitely logical there is probably movie logic to this stuff.
Oh certainly.

But its worth noting that by our current point in the timeline, Dresden has been shot three times in the last five years.
I mean, the list reminds me that he got knocked unconscious by a Whampire with a tire iron beating him over the head with it around four months ago.

Thats a little beyond movie logic here, and into "wizards are deceptively tough".

That certainly makes us a lot deadlier against the likes of Vampires and other supernaturals who ca't boost their own Healthtrack.

It does make us more competative with Exalted, who like us can get Ox-Body or other sources of more health.

you could maybe argue some black court might be able to raise their health. Since word of jim and in story at least a few times they get stronger via eating more people. Which you know isn't as helpful when everyone knows your weaknesses and you'll get killed if you do too much.

while dresdens special yet not too special we should probably note dresdens likely taken more damage than the average wizard does in their first century.

I was under the impression that GSNF added to Molly's successful damage roll before Bob could roll his soak against it. So instead of Molly having 5 damage in your example, its 5+5 = 10 damage.
Damage booster. One roll, not two. Thats how its supposed to work.
To clarify, how GSNF works is as follows.

Say Bob has 15 soak. Molly attacks and rolls and does, say, 5 normsl damage. Bob soaks agg, so he then rolls his entire 15 soak and gets 4 sux, meaning Molly does 1 normal dmg.

As it is a successful damage, she spends reflexively spends 1 Essence for GSNF and does 5 agg damage, no rolls needed.

So the damage is 1normal +5 agg.

Cool now we need to quicky change the plan to say []Use Green sun Numbus when able.

[X] Plan Reaperman +GSN
-[x]Use Green Sun Numbus on the will when you can
-[X]Turn 0: Full Defense + Activate Shintai: 2m, 2wp
-[X]Turn 1: Activate Melee Excellency 3/3 + Attack + Defend: 1m
--[X]Attack: 23 dice at DC6 (BSM -1 + Multi action penalty 1)
--[X]Defend: 22 dice at DC5 (Dark Sun 4 + BSM -1 + Multiaction penalty 2)
-[X]Turn 2: Melee Excellency 2/3 + Attack + Defend
--[X]Attack: 23 dice at DC6 (BSM -1 + Multi action penalty 1)
--[X]Defend: 22 dice at DC5 (Dark Sun 4 + BSM -1 + Multiaction penalty 2)
-[X]Turn 3: Melee Excellency 1/3 + Attack + Defend
--[X]Attack: 23 dice at DC6 (BSM -1 + Multi action penalty 1)
--[X]Defend: 22 dice at DC5 (Dark Sun 4 + BSM -1 + Multiaction penalty 2)
-[X]Mobility as needed
-[X]LYDIA: Retreat to rally point, + use Open The Way to reopen Way : 1m, + 1wp for autosux
-[X]STUNT: As Usum's unease vanishes under a wave of indignation, you catch Lydia's arm with your offhand, your eyes never leaving your enemy as you sign out a quick message on her arm. As she retreats behind you, you do something entirely unexpected. You laugh in his face. "Thief you name me? You?" You inject all the scorn of teenage contempt into your voice. "A nameless bandit, accusing a rightful heir of theft. A toad, lusting after swan flesh." All trace of levity abruptly leaves your voice. "A running dog seeking more victims for his slavemaster." You sneer."Thrice I name you fool. Fool, I name you, for selling your birthright for a mess of pottage. Fool, I name you for wearing your chains as adornments."With each word your anima brightens, the green fires driving the shadows further and further back even as they condense around your form. And your voice is a choral symphony as you whisper. "Fool I name you for coming to this city." As your warform stabilizes around you, you finish."One more time." You waggle your shield mockingly. "Come."

In Shintai our strength is 5. So GSN does 5 damage. I don't know if the hungry dead get anything like ox body, but if we can nich her I think we can get her into the penalty zone at least.

Will Molly be using GSNF when applicable?

With the new ruling, it is now very useful for the fight.

I almost feel sorry for the monster that's going to be perma-killed by an angry Infernal in nothing flat. Almost. Mostly I just want to see him go splat, and send a warning to the supernatural community about why you don't mess with us and ours.

Arc 6 Post 32: Against the Silence of Ages
Against the Silence of Ages

3nd of October 2006 A.D.

As Usum's unease vanishes under a wave of indignation, you catch Lydia's arm with your offhand, your eyes never leaving your enemy as you sign out a quick message on her arm. As she retreats behind you, you do something entirely unexpected. You laugh in his face. "Thief you name me? You?" You inject all the scorn of teenage contempt into your voice. "A nameless..."

As you ascend in a pyre of green flame so the demon descends into his master's embrace, a slash of its black sword leaving behind a maw of darkness that eats the light around it, but as the curtain falls the hollow crack of bones growing changing, you hear the hollow crack of bone, breaking and being remade into a shape more horrid still.

The Daimyo of the Dark had armed his champion well.. "...and girded him for battle," It is hard to tell which thought is yours and which is Usum's, but you know what he is planning, not to contest Gard's magic, but catch it in the lesser veil and keep the greater intact.

"Lydia," you shout, voice warping in the growing light of anima flame. "Get back to the rally point, cut the veil!"

The younger girl gives you a look like she thinks you're crazy. "You wanna fight that alone?"

"We don't know what's on the other side!"

That manages to convince her though

Runes shine, darkness breaks like a cloud in a high wind and still to your eyes only the demon is revealed, a skeletal giant looming twice your height studded with spokes of bone, more twisted and defiled than before... other that is than the face which had been returned to not just seeming life, but the flower of youth, a too small mask pulled over the twisted accursed of the Akuma, its eyes are still bleeding tears uncounted

But still he does not give himself to the fury of the black wind so even as the world sings with the clarity of battle you are weary, not simply throwing yourself into the fight but keeping your guard up. He makes no move to parry, to get out of your way as, though you were no more concern than the deadly sun at his back, even as your blade manages to part the shadows and sink through the bony armor of his knee the eerie face above only smiles even as voracious green flame burned up his leg uncaring of the swirling shadows.

Akuma takes 8 Damage -> Now at 8/16
Lost 3 Essence -> You are now at 5/12

Yin is dark and Yin is cold, it is metal hard and unyielding, but in that moment you understand with the clarity that only sidden terror can bring Yin is stillness. It washes over you like a wave unending it smothers and it binds against the vulgatr light of your armor as the darkness of Kakuri has struggled against the flames of Lanka for ages of the world. Your armor holds... but when when the stillness passes you can no longer hear the ocean.

Boiling Sea Mastery has been removed as the Anti-freeze froze in the aura of Yin Nihilus. All DCs increased by 1

"Is that all you've got?" you taunt the akuma.

The answer comes not from him but from a window overlooking the battle, three guns propped in a window tight as they will come, three inhuman pairs of eyes tracking your movements, somehow able to see when their master is out of the way to spray a hail of automatic fire.

Bullet after bullet after bullet sparks off your shield hot as embers from a forge. The gall of the asshole, to break the ancient law of the duel. Who does he think he is?

Molly takes 4 Damage -> Now at 18/22 Health

"Covering fire seven thirty, move!" you hear one of Odin's warriors shout as the other four move out with Murphy not half a step behind.

As they raise their guns you see Gard hesitate, between trying to raise the veil the Voice of Kakrui still shrouds himself in helping to deal with the trio at the window.

What does Gard to?

[] [GARD] Help guard against the fire from the window

[] [GARD] Keep trying to dispel the Greater Akuma's invisibility

[] [GARD] Loan you some good fortune in battle (-1 to all DC to replace BSM)

What do you do?

[] [MOLLY] just keep attacking him in melee, he has to be running out of chi and nihilus is costly to invoke

[] [MOLLY] Push him into the sunlight

[] [MOLLY] Write in

OOC: Found some of those missing Akuma.. Also you guys almost took 15 damage until I remembered that the lesser Akuma are mooks so they do not double 10 automatically and they do not have a specialty in firearms. I re-rolled and they rolled like hell.

Is that everyone accounted for? How many lesser Akuma were there to start with, and how many are dealt with/being dealt with? I don't wanna get jumped by some surprise minion wearing a bandolier of grenades at this stage of the fight, that's what we paid Odin for our own minions for.

Didn't you just rule that GSNF is a damage adder and that we'd use it? How are we only doing 3?

Concurring, that's pretty important to know, since it's probably the difference between doing the three of right now or instantly going for eight, which given that it's half his health is going to have him feel it.

Edit:

Particularly since if our DPS is that high with GSNF used, we can absolutely have Gard only work on the minions, we'll kill the Akuma pretty quick.
