Green Flame Rising (Exalted vs Dresden Files)

To what extent would it matter though? Politically being an Akuma is bad, but unless we get on the jade court's bad side we're not actually a Yama King. Even having a hell doesn't make them one of them in the sense of the history they jades have with the thousand hells.

I could see it being something they are more willing to tolerate or ignore, similar to how the white council handles notable sorcerers and mortal practitioners in the service of other powers.
He would never be accepted by the Jade Court.
Any Wan Kuei that we, either as a westerner or a Demon Empress, educate will forver be outcast.
That's not a bad thing in general, as it would limit that Vampire's options outside of serving us, but it is a thing we should be aware of.

As to the baby jade thing, I think MiS would cover it if we could make it bow. It works on psychological issues induced by fomor powers, so I don't see why it couldn't restore clarity to someone suffering from a demonic transformation.
Not sure how much of the Chi Mei's state comes from supernatural reasons we can solve.

I think the major issue is that after suffering in hell the the Vampires conscious side is too weak and broken to do anything, leaving only the demonic instinct in charge.
We could certainly subdue the P'o-driven Hungry Dead, but I'm not sure we could help it recover its sanity without a Charm or a Qiao Path for that purpose.

Definitly.
Even sane and non Yama-aligned Wan Kuei count as Akuma if they don't follow the traditions.

Also for now I'm not sure if we could restore the sanity of a Dharma 0 Chi-Mei.
Maybe with the right Charm, but not by our mere existance.

Note that followers of heretical dharmas are considered heretics, not akuma. Tolerance of heretics varies between the orthodox courts, but it's not an automatic death sentence like being an akuma is.

Inventing our own Heretical Dharma is likely to be extraordinarily difficult, an epic achievement in its own right.

And I agree that restoring sanity to a Chi-Mei is likely to take Exalted magic of some kind considering that the Wan Kuei themselves need to use ritual magic to do so. It feels like something you could use Ancient Sorcery to do. If they weren't animal level intelligent VEE could probably make them spontaneously develop Dharma 1, but they're incapable of making the required Wish.

Note that being a Chi-Mei isn't simply being under the control of the Po. The Po can be smart and intellectually sophisticated, but a Dharma 0 Wan Kuei with such a Po would still be of animalistic intelligence motivated solely by the desire to feed and survive.

Yeah, I can see the reasoning, if they think you need to get more than one part to be under control, then you will have *clients* willing to go and give you *just this one part* and unknowingly fall under it, then you can convince them to give *just one more* and pretend that they gave too much to convince others that the previous ones just gambled too much.

Whereas, if they instantly take control, they'll get less *clients* and potential infiltrators/Spies/Fallguys.
You're misreading it.

What they can do with the very first piece is tell how much they need to obtain complete control; what they're implying by hiding this is that they have no idea when they'll get it until they do.

If they try to take control before they have everything, the vast majority of the time this will cause them to lose their grip entirely.

At the very least I would campaign for making it mandatory reading for any inhabitant of our hell who wishes to leave to pursue enlightenment in the outside world

I'd be happy to spread knowledge of how to achieve enlightenment to the right Wan Kuei.

For one thing, more enlightened vampires are less desperate and less likely to make deals with nefarious forces. Even enlightened vampires can fall, but they often fall because of despair when they seem to hit a blockage on their Road Back.

For another, even though Wan Kuei may start seeking enlightenment for selfish reasons becoming enlightened in a Dharma requires changing themselves and the way they think into people who fulfil roles within the cosmic order. They may be unpleasant or even evil roles, but they're still upholders of reality.

If we can make deals with Mab and the Winter Court, we can do the same with the Jade Court. We've a lot more to offer the Jade Court as well.

That's not to mention the potential reduction in the damage they cause if we can return the Wan Kuei to the state they were in during the 4th Age, where they could feed on environment chi without causing damage at lower levels of enlightenment and were less likely to lose control of themselves.

Endless Suffering - Those who follow the spirit, if not the letter of the law, shall come back to life if they die from anything but old age.
Sort of an aside, but I had a thought on this aspect of hell design I wanted to share:

I was thinking about the various immortality schemes that've been suggested for other hells and the contrast with what you have here Yzarc when it occurred to me that we(or at least I) might be missing part of the point here.

The thousand hells are supposed to be part of an afterlife system, not necessarily a permanent home or an exotic variant of a mortal world. They can be like those things, but the original goal was to purify and pass along the souls to another life or whatever else was next for them. If I recall correctly, their lore even states that it's possible that escape was made easier (and maybe even possible in the first place) because the Yama Kings betrayed that to keep milking souls for power.

So what if we play into that original function as part of being something hellish but not evil?

Build some lesson into the design of the exit clause for our hell, preferably with some connection to a theoretical cause for an outsider to be damned to it, and make people simply start over whenever they die?

Not a reincarnation with a memory wipe, just a biological reset to early childhood so they have to grow up again. Because the suffering in our endless suffering is being required to repeat puberty :V As a sort of progress tracker and way to help make clean breaks for people stuck in ruts.

Arguably that could be used as the basis for making it harder to escape our hell too; it isn't cheating, so the inmates can't either. To get out they have to learn their lesson first.

It'd also be a good place to make Molly's mark on her hell, rather than leaving it as something rooted solely in external things.

Given Molly's control issues, something related to learning how to help other people while respecting their autonomy could be interesting.

Given the influence you cited for your hell Yzarc something alloying that with the conflict between the needs of communities and the individuals within them could be neat too.

The idea of a hell that attempts to teach a lesson Molly herself is struggling to learn seems like a really engaging way to connect it to her narrative as a character.

Why not just do a full Reincarnation at that point. Personality death doesn't matter when you have an immortal soul.

I will be editing my post shortly but to give context.

The Res does not give youth or anything else. It brings a person back to life fully healed. That can be inferred as the hells are never meant to permanently keep the people in, only work them over until they are ready to pass on.

This is why the rez in Mu does not work on old age. The people of Zen-Mu already seek enlightenment and that is already covered. The rez is very much a Buddhist Zen thing as it keeps rezing you till you are ready to leave the system. For in Buddhism achieving nirvana is the goal and to achieve nirvana you stop existing.

It is all themed and it is why I named the World Mu, which means mu (Japanese: 無; Korean: 무) or Chinese wu (traditional Chinese: 無; simplified Chinese: 无), meaning "not have; without", is a key word in Buddhism, especially Zen traditions.

It is why they call themselves the "Children of Zen-Mu" because they do not have enlightenment.

So for that reasoning, it is pointless to mess with the reincarnation any more than the do not die from anything but old age part as the people are culturally motivated enough.

That and if an old person dies, he will be rezed only to die again as he is not given youth.

One question that becomes relevant if we're making a Hell of Enlightenment is whether Enlightenment exists as a cosmological thing in the setting?

As has been pointed out, and supported with quotes, we're effectively operating within a Western Christian framework. Does Buddhist or Taoist style enlightenment exist for humans? The Dresden setting doesn't even really support support Eastern Christian theologies of theosis that well.

The Jade Courts' form of enlightenment is intimately bound up with the fact that they're the damned in search of redemption and the forgiveness of Heaven.

Enlightenment as I see it comes from within. You cannot teach it or gain it from reading a book. It comes from self discovery.

Significantly so, you would probably be able to call an army in at a target of your choice off that if you handed it off to the right elder.

Well, time to find said right elder then.

The problem with that is you are asking an Infernal Exaltation to make a moral judgement, that is not really what they were made or altered for.

Of course they're very good at moral judgment! They choose those that help the Yozi! Ignore the devil tigers all around you, their judgment is absolutely perfect and not prone to doing other things!

You're misreading it.

What they can do with the very first piece is tell how much they need to obtain complete control; what they're implying by hiding this is that they have no idea when they'll get it until they do.

If they try to take control before they have everything, the vast majority of the time this will cause them to lose their grip entirely.

No, I am not misreading it, let me put the whole paragraph here:
While the Wan Kuei may sell slivers of their souls to the Yama Kings and still strive towards enlightenment they never know the measure of their own soul, for that is only given to those who have reached the Hundred Clouds, the pinnacle of Dharma. So every deal with the masters of Yomi Wan is made with the understanding that this one might be your last that one might have handed them the last piece of yourself and utter control over all that you are. It is a matter of some theological debate among the Jade Court if the Yama Kings can see how much of a petitioner's soul they have yet to claim. Usum can put that to rest, they can as soon as they take the first sliver of soul though they are usually extremely circumspect in using the pieces of a partially claimed soul to directly sway the Wan Kuei, much preferring blackmail, bribery and intimidation because they have learned though the long ages that such is almost an assured means to lose their tools and all the toil and effort that went into cultivating them

Look at what is bolded, what is said is that Ususm can tell that they can control you as soon as they take the first silver of soul, they just dislike doing it and prefer blackmail and other indirect methods, because they have learned the lesson I pointed out, that taking control too soon stopped them from being trusted and so it is in their advantage to pretend that they can't as easily as they actually can.

The Yama Kings can indeed except some control over a Wan Kuei they hold only a portion of their soul, but the fundamental difference to say Infernal paths of sorcery is that, while both have free will, the Hungry Dead have far more experience in exerting that free will in excruciating ways so that they might escape. Each and every one of them has been to hell and tortuously found their way out. If the chain is not unbreakable it's likely to be broken.

Enlightenment as I see it comes from within. You cannot teach it or gain it from reading a book. It comes from self discovery.

A Wan Kuei's enlightenment comes from within, but a master's teaching or the right piece of knowledge can put them in the right frame of mind to experience a moment that can result in enlightenment.

As this is at least partially a Taoist's take on enlightenment, preparing and consuming the right products of alchemy can also induce the opportunity for enlightenment.

Hmm......going to need more time to edit the post.

That said, what charms do you guys want next turn? Here is my wish list.

Murder is Meat - 4xp - Spirit killer, just the thing we need if we face a immortal god or a Greater Akuma, both of which are in our city.
Rendered Villain Dispersal - 4xp - To combo with a lot of charms like CSR.
Maggot mana plague - 8xp - We have a LOT of minions and one baby white that has yet to fully awake.

So 16xp out of 30 xp.

I will be pushing for these three with emphasis on Murder is Meat as I believe that it will be too important to pass up in the next turn considering how many "immortals" are running around.

if they are cursed or have had their soul artificially broken, well Molly is an infernal. Just serve her and both problems are automatically solved.

Their soul isn't artificially broken. Their deeds in life caused the P'o part of the soul to grow strong enough that when they died it split off from the Hun part of their soul and fall into a karmically appropriate Hell, before it managed to escape and so pass the trial to become a Wan Kuei, whereupon it reanimates their dead body. The now separate Hun aspect of the soul, which hangs around the body, enters the body at the same time.

The splitting of the soul into two parts is a natural thing that happens to people whose Po grew strong enough when they were alive. The Hun and Po splitting when people died happened to everyone who died in Exalted.

The Curse is an inherent part of taking the Second Breath. I wouldn't expect that an Infernal can trivially relieve it anymore than they can relieve an Abyssal's Nameless Curse.

Windborn Stride is a must, IMO.

8xp and only let's us rum fast. What is thd logic?
Other peeps can run faster than we can and use ranged weapons.

Particularly Vampires with Celerity or Wan Kuei with Black Wind.

That means in some situations an enemy has a near-certain shot at getting away from a fight, or they could kite and shoot us a bit, though that one's less realistic, but not impossible.

It's also good for our own abilty to deal with snipers or other ranged attackers.

Because I don't agree with that sentiment. Ego death is real death, and any subsequent incarnations are more like spiritual successors than the 'original' person. Not that I expect everyone to agree, but that's how I see it.

I'm aware that it doesn't actually refresh anything; my point was that it should, or at least do something else that doesn't end it regular death.

I get the thematics you're going for, but the hell is an afterlife. Dying of old age and slipping out of it doesn't really make any sense to me, and even with what it does protect you from dying of old age puts people on a limit right around the century mark.

It doesn't guarantee anything about actually learning something, and it just makes the whole thing a wonky mortal world in a lot of ways.

… My stunt is clearly an intimidation attempt, but the winning vote dropped the relevant excellency. So what exactly happens with that?

It also doubles the result of our initiative checks as a passive ability.
And given that we are using the EX vs WOD combat system initiative is much more important then in D&D. In D&D initiative is just the order that everyone goes in. In EX vs WOD defending yourself takes an action so if the other guy keeps going first they can basically stun lock you. Our soak means that isn't as big of a problem, but the fact that 1s minus on soak makes me less inclined to depend on it then I indicated in earlier posts.

Also the action rules in EX vs WOD combat make minions really effective even if they aren't that strong so long as they can force the enemy to use up their actions defending or attacking.
