Of course i know that. Thing is, when you have, say, an infection, washing hands won't help. But antibiotics will.

Though are there any actual mechanics for washing hands and the effect?
It's part of the medicine or resistance stunt that deals with the infection. But ultimately so would your magical antibiotic vine, so would the antibiotic plants and molds that ancient people used to deal with infection.

The most mechanical benefit in print that I'm aware of is using alcohol to clean a wound before dealing with a wound reduces the Infection Virulence by 1 point. Or you could make something that you can render into Seven Bounties Paste from the 2e Corebook.

Doesn't that heal everything except for the Great Contagion and leprosy?

Yeah. Or you could make something that makes the Wound-Cleansing Unguent that is written up in Oadenol's Codex's thaumaturgy (alchemy) section if you want something less fantastic.

The vine wouldn't be a Stunt, it would count as Equipment.
I mean, sure? A spear is both equipment and the vector for a lot of stunts.

Whew. I had a hell of a morning- too hot, not enough sleep, woke up late. @Aleph was top-tier ST in running even this short session for me.

Session 12 Log

Alas, no adorable tiger-girls today. Just ineffectual flailing.

We pick up where we left off last session, and this is actually very much how most of the games I ran or played in worked- single scenes got so long, they took several weeks to resolve, for one reason or another. Combat is a good example because of how granular and paced it is. For good or ill, we did not reach combat today.

So, I immediately start assessing how much these slaves are worth, and learn a few interesting things. We also have a moment of discussion regarding Frugal Merchant Method, which guarantees 3 automatic successes on haggling rolls if the seller is dishonest, 1 success if honest. Note that 2e does not have haggling mechanics, so we generally assume it applies to whatever the most relevant 'transaction' roll is, be it cha+pres, int+bur or whatnot. 1e DOES have a haggling mechanic though.

Here, I try to sell these slavers on The Better Way (tm). The Solar Way, the Long Term Investment way... but as I do this, Aleph keeps revealing more information, and Inks then arrives at an interesting conclusion...

Armed with that knowledge, it lets me make more of an informed decision, but here I am constrained a great deal by my lack of Charms and other options. I generally don't support 'charm for every problem' design, but even with inherent excellency houserule, I lack a lot of horsepower, and Inks was Presence 2 for this whole session.

I also want you to realize that she's Charisma 2, Presence 2, and has been successfully making deals throughout the whole game. The main reason for this is that most of her opponents are mortals, and we are using the Appearance modifier rules.

You'll note that I did not use Sexy Stunner Style against the slavers, as that... I could have, most assuredly, but I would not have enjoyed describing Inks vamping for these people. It would not have been fun or in-character for Inks.

So, Inks realizes that the slavers want Inks to quite litereally buy them out of Gem for the time it takes her to piss someone off and die- and then they'll go right back to what they're doing before. El Galabi is their usecase, and to be honest, it's a reasonable plan. Not one Inks likes, but she can respect it.

Now, I can safely say I was not as mentally prepared for this session as I wanted to be. I was willing to, yesterday, get into a fight about this, but since I did not arrive in time and had computer issues, i was not in the right headspace for it.

Because of that, I flailed a little and asked for help. After a bit of discussion, Aleph took an opportunity to move things along, maybe not the most elegant way (I personally think it was fine), but we both needed to kick things into gear. The slaver and cohorts essentially demanded an agreement of non-interference, represented by an Ally 1 background with these Sun Market Slavers. Inks is not happy with this arrangement, but she got an Artifact out of the deal...

Alas, Maji was not pleased. Maji expected fights. Maji is the shoulder demon.

And to be fair, I'm totally going to break slavery as an instutition in Gem. Just Smartly.

Having taken care of that (for now), we go back to what started this little excursion, getting Black Jade for the Baths! This is much more perfunctory- You'll note though that I needed to start caste mark flaring to regen motes, as I have about 19m personal (and no peripheral under the hack), so I was regenerating essentially 2m every time I 'talked'. (Gentleperson's agreement).

Anyway, here Inks happily invoked Sexy Stunner Style, which helped offset a lot of her dice issues, and saved up motes to use FMM one more time. She then negotiated the black jade horns down, and left with a somewhat successful trip. Also note to myself and Aleph, Inks'll be repairing those tablets she bought and attempting to translate them at some point.

Back at her townhouse. we take a moment to assess the gemstone. Now Aleph tends not to tell me Difficulties, and I generally have always run Exalted under the idea of transparent difficulty until told otherwise- 2e has a very specific rule that lets you assess difficulty before you try, and my impression of the system was 'transparent, unless not'. As opposed to 'opaque, until made clear.'

And, like with many challenges, Aleph did not expect me to roll so well.

So we reveal, in a snazzy form factor that suits Inks's aesthetics, a regional variant of one of my favorite artifacts ever. And, Aleph did a fantastic job of elaborating how it would have looked at felt to the user for the first time. The other interesting note is that it is a regional variant, so it changes out the 'canonical' power in favor of something more appropriate to Gem.

This willingness to adjust things for impact and fluff is an important skill to develop as a player and ST, and part of the experience is knowing how far you can push things. Aleph did a good job here.

And so that concludes Session 12. We expect to resolve the 'baths' project over downtime before picking up again in Session 13.
So she backed down? Huh.
I fully expected that to end in violence. A lot of it. Admittedly she got a bribe out of it, but still.

I will point out that the slave dealers were rather comfortable at facing down a known sorcerer. One with the naked threat of a godblood tiger, at that.
Almost as bad as ticking off Anathema.
Wonder who their backer(s) are. Do expect that if they return to the city, they are probably going to investigate countermeasures.

Is it just me, or do ou find it hard to make, say, truly evocative artifacts for modern exalted?

I mean, i tried, but all i got was a better cellphone. And guns with infinite ammo and a firearms excellency.

Ah, crap.

Fime then. How would you design something that doesn't sound like it came out of sci fi?
Why shouldn't an artifact for modern Exalted be sci-fi themed? I mean, Artifacts aren't conventional technology, they're magical wonders that can look like anything appropriate, you don't need to limit yourself.

Fime then. How would you design something that doesn't sound like it came out of sci fi?
Boots that let you walk on walls, or move with blinding speed, or jump further than humanly possible? A ring of invisibility? A source of light that reveals invisible things? Magical instruments that impose emotional effects? A fan that makes a lot of wind? A length of animated rope? A phone with perfect reception and high speed internet regardless of location? A mirror that lets you speak with ghosts? Something that controls the weather? A key or keycard that fits any lock? A pen that sanctifies any oath between two parties that it's used to sign with? Glasses that let you see in the dark? A flash drive with unlimited storage space? Batteries that never loose charge? A car that never runs out of gas?

Well, there's a number of ways to go for it.

What are you trying to do? Fight someone? Kick someone's ass? Heal somebody? Communicate?

Pick an aesthetic, the helpful ones are Steampunk and "Crystalpunk". Both of which you can find in the Alchemicals book(s) and are really helpful for this. Alternatively, you can look at Wonders of the Lost Age for inspiration.

Part of the problem is that artifacts tend to be pretty mono-focused pieces of equipment or otherwise not really evocative / interesting, so you want to make things specific "This is its function" followed by "How does XYZpunk achieve this effect?"

Making cell phones and laptops is one way you can go about it, sure, but here's the thing, that's... boring. Instead, how about a gauntlet that uses Adamant, Starmetal circuits, Moonsilver mirrors and an Orichalcum based power source to generate small essence constructs as the interface of a powerful worn laptop or basic weapons based on the users skill (Essentially a magitech omnitool)?

Instead of "just" a gun, how about one that fires shells that are inscribed Thaumaturgical Rituals? Or an "artifact" that's actually the process of creating bullets that contain a specific spell?

A crystal-based engine that converts the users essence into other forms of power and sockets into basically anything?

Alternatively, modular artifacts, where the total artifact is in truth a combination of a bunch of smaller ones, like an artifact that enables a computer to hook up to the internet anywhere, an eternal small scale power-source, a 3D projection system, etc. etc. that all are meant to hook up to computers, but are then combined into a singular "artifact" computer and / or the creator upgrades his computer piece by piece into an artifact.

Magitech cybernetics are always a joy too.

I was reading some discussion and someone said the "Sun-Heart Furnace Soul" charm made Ligier somehow.

Anyone have any idea on if that is head cannon, or actually implied?

Yeah, I as a player was not in the right headspace to start a fight right then and there, and going forward, I'm going to have to resist the urge as a player to start a fight just to have one. Mind, this doesn't mean I'm going to let slavery stand, I'm just not going to cut it down with a daiklave (right now).

With most of the Yozis its clear why dumping them back in creation would be bad.

With a few of them it is unclear, probably due to the lesser amount of info on them. Sachervaelli (I'm not going to bother trying to spell his name) is one exception to this, the only info we really know about him is why it would be a bad idea.
The ones I am thinking about are:
Qaf, Oramus, Cytherea, Szoreny.

Of these I can think of some reasons Oramus might be bad for creation.

Okay, also, I'm really going to regret trying to give advice, but @Accelerator , have you ever opened a book of nWoD? Basically anything nWoD includes all sorts of modern/earlier modern magical whatnots that can do things. Exalted Modern ideas can be taken from those. It's also really not all that hard?

A calculator that tells the the price of everything (including bribes) and the value of nothing.

A camera that steals people's souls. Oddly enough it's exactly the same as a real-life camera, no wonder more people these days are godless atheists. :V

Etc, etc. It's not actually hard to use modern technology as a jumping off point, though I don't know the specific mechanics of artifacts in 2e.

Ah, crap.

Fime then. How would you design something that doesn't sound like it came out of sci fi?

Like I always say, magic deals with human concepts. Science doesn't.

Imagine a cell phone that can call dead people. Or a car that's immune to traffic. Or a super-gun that you load with your mind, consuming memories with every shot (pretty harmless for the first six "bullets" fired in an hour...)

Scientifically speaking, these aren't just impossible. They're actually nonsensical. What does "immune to traffic" even mean? How do memories serve as projectiles? But they work fine as artifact concepts.

Another option is to check out scientific impossibilities and exploit them specifically. Conservation of energy means that things can't just transform into much smaller things, but an Artifact motorcycle can turn into a keychain fob. Basic causality means that your guitar can't change the weather, but an Artifact guitar totally can.

With most of the Yozis its clear why dumping them back in creation would be bad.

Cytherea is basically the big bang. Probably not a good neighbour.

Szoreny is a creature of reflection and opposition, so you can expect him to be everyone's enemy at least some of the time. And if I'm GMing, reflections and "alternate-universe versions" of existing creatures wander out of the Silver Forest pretty much all the time.

Also, you know.

Horrifically toxic magical mercury polluting the oceans and rivers

Qaf, Oramus, Cytherea, Szoreny.

Qaf would probably be the "safest", in the sense that he himself would be mostly harmless - he's a mountain that can only be claimed by taking steps on the path to personal enlightenment, but the lessons aren't really meant for humans, so like 90% of mortals are just going to not bother with the magic sapient mountain that won't let you climb it unless you keep answering Zen riddles.

No, the problems would be with his subselves, and their subselves, and the teeming multitudes of demons beneath them. I don't know if any of Qaf's Unquestionables were actually described in canon, or written up by fans, but even the most peaceful & benevolent Third Circle souls tend to prioritize their own alien ideas of what morality and correct behavior are over whatever the mortals they meet believed in beforehand. The non-benevolent ones are at best indifferent to whether their actions hurt people or not, at worst actively malicious.

Second Circle Souls have the potential to be more "human", but that just means that instead of Eldritch Zeus roaming around reshaping the landscape, you have Eldritch Hercules knocking up your daughters and picking fistfights with the local gods, or Eldritch Jesus spreading the good word about worshiping his dad and trailing a horde of hippie converts wherever he goes like a swarm of patchouli-scented locusts.

Then you have First Circle souls, which can fuck up your day in a million different ways just by living their lives; even if they're not predatory or territorial, most demons aren't very good for Creation ecologies, and the average demon outmuscles the average human by a broad margin.

You aren't just freeing a single being when you set a Yozi loose on Creation, you're inviting his entire retinue along for the ride.

Define "a river", "always", and "clean" please.

Do you mean a stream or something like the Nile, a length of it or the whole thing?
Does this last until you die, until the end of the Age, or just blatantly forever?
Does it protect against supernatural sources of befoulment and filth, poisons, what about parasites?

That should be easily achievable.
It's just crossbreeding/grafting a fast-growing vine with a plant that has antibiotic properties.
There might even be something like that already in Creation, probably in the East.
Or real life, folk medicine is a crap shoot and not like antibiotics. but until Arbor Drugs we DID have methods of treating the sick and so on. As well as some cultures and practices of disinfectants and so on.
