Game of the Year: A Naruto Quest

Disappointed with the Genin team, then again would probably been disappointed with most Genin composition.

Well, just make the most out of it and get to Chunin as fast as possible. I mean don't get me wrong, I wouldn't vote to save Mariko's life over the mission and expect her to do the same.

Only kinda weirded out that we narratively focused on Taijutsu and Kenjutsu but became Genjutsu master by omake fiat.

One participant who flooded the thread with enough omakes and art to be able to do that reminds me of shady pay to win practices in video games these days. Which I guess is kinda fitting.

Gotta agree with this, XP does have a narrative effect and Omake XP occurs outside the voted action (ignoring the effects of how canon Omakes directly impact the plot).

But there isn't an easy way to reward fanworks (which imo do deserve rewards) without directing the story, the whole purpose of the reward is to have it impact the story.

Edit:
I think having the XP expenditures discussed in the update a bit more, ie show how Daisuke has been practicing genjutsu or had a revelation about a particular technique would help with immersion, although it still allows for the issues regarding narrative direction

Honestly I wonder what happens if we fail. passing the team test is impossible if the team refuses to work together to pass, not 2 but all 3. There having a profession work space and there just...things that you can't work with even with trying to do so which is a rare (not super or very rare but still) extreme case.

This might be one of those rare extreme cases. ESPECIALLY for a shinobi profession where Trust is NEEDED to function with your allies.

Which would be interesting if we fail. What happens then? Do we repeat a year or do we go into where mook genin reside....and I also wonder if this isn't sabotage.

To make sure the protag doesn't grow too strong too fast....or to end up in Danzo hands. Maybe the higher up decisions aren't all that smart, regardless of how much experience they have.

Like...What happens if Kakashi did fail nartuo/sasuke and Sakura/Hinata. Then what? Cause the odds were clearly are very against those to be taught by kakashi. Then what?

Except he didn't use daddies credit card to win the game, but he donated time and effort to make good art for the quest and quality side stories.

[X] Ino does not look happy. She needs you now. Go find her before she gets too far away.

So we should fade away from an Ino focus soon, but that was a pretty bad reaction that we should take steps to mitigate.

I'm fine with the teams, would've preferred Shino over Kiba. Although this does solidly confuse me; what do companions do if not teammates?

That's a good point, no one has considered the fact that we may fail. We can do our best to work with Mariko but we can't make her work with us (charisma shenanigans aside).

It would be extremely wasteful for Konoha to have spent all this time training people only to throw them away for being mediocre/needing a bit more discipline.

Except he didn't use daddies credit card to win the game, but he donated time and effort to make good art for the quest and quality side stories.

What about people to use time and effort to earn money to win the game? He isn't saying that the Omakes aren't adding to the story and providing a richer world/reading experience just that there are some readers that have more control over the narrative than others.

I am waiting for Ves to somehow turn Mariko to best girl

I hope not tbh, I think there being conflict and people which just don't like us is good for the story. I don't see the reasoning for how much some people don't like her but then again the main character is supposed to be a kid and they aren't known for letting go of things

God I hope not. She literally spend 7 years being a complete bitch because she said as a child the protagonist smell and decided to prevent him from being friends with Ino, sabotaging what other friendships Ino had and continue her BS up to the current update. Reminder that Ino is her COUSIN.

She a psycho who only reason why she doesn't kill or cripple us is because of living in a ninja village means she can't get away with going too far.

"SO. MUCH. RAGE" for so goddamn little insult (insult as in not leaving the table when called smelly and to not be friended)...yeah. And the current update means she still on that mindset for Daisuke. There being a kid and there going to an asylum or a psychiatrist (considering her family clan and jutsu, kinda hilarious in a morbid way.)

We will try to be professional, we will fail cause she going to continue being herself, and we will move on. And if she tried any BS, well, I'm sure the ninja police will have some words with her. Regardless of Daisuke cat box position of either staying alive or being killed in village leaders thoughts depending on current political climate, Rules of the Village have to be uphold. Especially assault and attempted murder.

Unless she get away with it cause ninja clan bs. Then we just go straight for the kill next time she tries (or when we can absolutely get away with it.)

Problem is that some people don't have the time and/or talent to contribute in such a way.
You try to make compelling arguments during votes and make constructive discussions with the majority only for some random person with 3 omakes and 17 pictures to steer everything in a completely different direction.
Possibly even to a degree that breaks the immersion.
Not to tell what to do, but now would be good time to restict xp. Let's say 10 for omakes 20 for picture or something.

But...that's only my opinion.

She was outright making seals and getting ready to use a Jutsu on us in the middle of a classroom. Considering we're ninja, that's basically like pulling out a Kunai, and getting ready to throw it. Was it going to be lethal? No. Would it have been horrifying or painful or traumatizing? Considering she's a Genjutsu User? Yeah probably.

When she's outright ready to attack us, for flicking chalk at her head, after she disrupts our presentation, and Iruka outright told the entire class to treat us with the same respect they give him, I'd consider that an enemy.

Plus, you know, seven entire years of aggressive antagonism against both us and our best friend who also happens to be her own cousin.
Is this in response to my, "Don't think we can do anything about the teams so looking to simply see how things play out" because Iruka was there at the time, if I recall correctly, and still stood by these Team choices. I doubt he'll backtrack just because we want him to.

So either we can work together and we pass, or we can't and we won't. Not the end of the world if we fail here though so I'm not too worried.

@Vesvius What stats are required for us to have no blur during a (mastered - to all tiers if applicable) shunshin or do we need to go all sharingan crazy? Hypothetically in a decade in universe that is. Feel free to say nothing

Naruto's Graduation by Berserkslash
"HAHAHAHAHA! YOU LOSERS ALL SUCK!" A young boy yells out from the giant stone face carved into the side of the mountain. Pushing off from the huge nose he makes sure to get a nice and clear booger trail leading from the inside, using the ropes holding him up as a pendulum.

"YOU MORON, ENOUGH WITH THE DUMBASS PRANKS!"
"YOU WON'T GETTING AWAY WITH JUST A WARNING FOR THIS ONE YOU IDIOT!"
"THEY'LL KILL YOU WHEN THEY CATCH YOU THIS TIME!"

The crowd watching from the top of the large circular building that contains many shinobi institutions scream out and shake fists in anger.

"YOU ALL WISH YOU HAD WHAT IT TOOK TO DO WHAT I DO ON A DAILY BASIS! I'M JUST THE GREATEST YOU'LL EVER SEE!"

As the blonde boy begins laughing loudly he is suddenly silenced, his head knocking back against the stone behind him.

"OWWWWW!" Screaming out, he grabs both his forehead and the back of his head with each hand to clutch at the two new knots sure to be forming. As he does so the pail of pain in the hand that goes to grab the back of his head upends and covers his back in bright green pain. A small chalk eraser falls down from where it had hit his head and the hand that goes to that position paints his face as well.

"YOU FOOL!" A young man with a scar across the bridge of his nose screams out, before leaping across the distance to stand horizontally along the stone face next to the boy. "WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING! WASTING YOUR TIME ON WORTHLESS TRICKS LIKE THIS ON THIS DAY OF ALL DAYS?!?"

The crowd watching bursts into loud laughter and jeers, enjoying the spectacle and the earned comeuppance.

"You didn't hafta hit me so hard Iruka-Sensei!" The boy complains pulling his hands away from his head finally and seeing what he'd done to himself. "And now I'm all covered in paint! Geez." Grumbling, he sneaks a peak out to the crowd still roaring with laughter and a hidden smile plays over his lips for a moment before his attention is dragged back to the irate teacher in front of him.

"Of course I had to hit you that hard! I SHOULD have hit you HARDER you IDIOT! Do you have any idea what you've done!" Glaring with rage, facial muscles twitching, Iruka had to hold himself back from smacking him upside the head to get him to understand.

"Whaddaya mean, it's just some statues, I'll be up here soon enough and way bigger! Maybe even have them build a bigger mountain on top sos I can be bigger'n all of em put together!" Smiling so wide his eyes closed, Naruto can't help but to imagine that happening in the future. But his daydream is destroyed with a sudden repeat of his previous pain to his forehead and then the back of his head.

"OWWW! Why ya gotta do that again!"

"BECAUSE THAT'LL NEVER HAPPEN RETARD! Without even getting into all the disrespect for the previous Lord Hokage of this village you can't become the leader of the leaf if you NEVER GODDAMN GRADUATE! YOU MISSED THE DAMNED TESTS TODAY YOU ABSOLUTE MORON!"

"WHAT!! NO WAY, THAT WAS TOMORROW WASN'T IT!" Bug eyed, Naruto stared at Iruka in horror.

"You missed the graduation test Naruto, and with the mess you made there's no way we're going to let you try and make it up today, you'll clean this up and then maybe you can beg to be reinstated for the next year of the academy." Snorting, he turns around and motions for Naruto to stay where he is as he leaves to collect cleaning supplies.

~~~
It had been hours and was closing in on to the evening, Naruto was still hard at work cleaning up the rest of the paint on the monument. Iruka stood on the roof of the administration building, silently staring at Naruto working as he had done since he had returned with cleaning supplies.
Every time Naruto attempted to talk during the process was met with a stony silence, and he could only glare resentfully at the rock in his view, ignoring Iruka back to the best of his abilities. Occasionally the boy would wince at a scrape to his hands as he scrubbed too hard in anger, but he continues on determinedly.
"Hey, Iruka, you don't think that's enough now? The rain will get the rest right?"
A sudden new voice nearly breaks his concentration to look back, but he remembers he is angry and just continues to glare the paint into submission as he scrubs harder.
"No. He needs to realize the consequences of his actions and finally shape up. He'll never amount to anything otherwise, if he even can now." Iruka harshly responds, causing Naruto to freeze a moment and nearly tear up before redoubling his scrubbing, trying to ignore everything.
"Ahh, maybe, maybe, just think you're a bit worked up being so harsh on him."
"Hmph."
"How about this, I owe ya for that last test for the year three students, how about I take over the rest of his punishment and you head off to get to work on the rest of the reports, I know you ain't done them all yet."
There is a small sound shuffling feet, before a sigh is given in response.
"Alright, but don't let him leave before he gets every last spot.. Thanks, Mizuki."
"Don't mind, don't mind." The silver haired man says and waves his fellow teacher off.
The silence grows back in moments as the scarred man leaves. Mizuki gives a sigh, and there is a slight creak of metal, glancing out of the corner of his eye, Naruto sees him leaning against the guard rail staring at the monument with a strange look in his eyes, before they meet his and Naruto quickly spins back around to face the stone.
"You know, you screwed the pooch on this one pretty bad, huh?"
There is silence for a while before Naruto can't take it anymore and responds.
"I DIDN'T KNOw the test was today……." Trailing off momentarily, he continues. "I was sure the test was tomorrow, I had my milk and it was just fine, I got it specifically cuz it'd go bad on test day and I'd know for sure, even marked it down and everything……"
"These things can happen sometimes, you can't let it get you down. And don't worry 'bout Iruka, he's only so harsh on you because he sees himself in you, he grew up without parents too you know."
"That doesn't mean he has to be such a dick!"
"No, but he wants to believe you can do better, don't you?"
"OF COURSE I DO, but…. It's too late now, I'm never gonna be able to wait a whole nother year with little kids to graduate… I'll never become Hokage like this!" He slams his fists to the stone in frustration, his vision blurring from what he pretends is the pain.
"You know…… The academy test isn't the only way people become Genin."
"WHAT!" Naruto spins around to stare at his teacher with wide eyes.
And so Mizuki explains the secret test and Naruto runs off, never seeing the gleeful smile covering his teachers face.
~~~

"--Congratulations Uzumaki Naruto, Genin of Konoha."

Feeling a weight on his forehead and hearing words, Naruto has only one reaction.

"IRUKA-SENSEI!"

"OOF"

~~~
The pair are a strange pair, wondering the street at such a late hour of the night. A young boy, a young ninja truly by the strangely worn forehead protector wrapped around said location, in torn and bloody clothes. A young man, another ninja of greater experience, wearing easily visible bandages even with his full uniform, which is also torn and bloody and to an even greater extent than his companions.
The two enter a small roadside restaurant and place their orders.
As they arrive the two happily enjoy their meal of noodles.
The two happily converse.
"--so, so, I was thinking! Yanno, I took out the Old man super easily with my Henge and I just came up with a super powerful version that'll totally let me take over as Hokage right away!"
"I thought I told you to stop creating stupid techniques Naruto." Sighing Iruka can only chuckle a bit as Naruto continues on.
"It ain't a stupid technique if it works on the Hokage! And so, and so, I was gonna use the full Taijuu Kage Bunshin and combine it with a super version of my Henge! I haven't got the study materials down just right yet, but with my Kage Bunshin I'm bound to get it eventually! I mean, Daisuke's mom is the prettiest lady I've ever seen, even if she is old, so no one could beat it!"
Laughing at his genius he doesn't notice Iruka going pale in front of him and the shifting of cloth behind him until a chill goes down his spine.
~~~

Naruto and Iruka had to visit the hospital a second time before the night ended.
So, did you know that Naruto pulled his whole Hokage mountain prank the day before the test and not the day of? This is my idea of the butterflies for the starting scene, but then destiny or my lack of ability cause things to pretty much go as canon after. Also fun scenes that I can't write but allude to.

Yea I think the amount of exp we get from Omakes in this quest is busted I really like how the QM of Number None does things he balances the exp rewards and he even went as far uping exp needed to increase some skills along with needing his rewards. (Plus only allows asigning it at the end of the arc to prevent mid arc power ups destabilising the plot.)

If we get Superhuman Charisma before the update, I'd be willing to vote for "Visit Team". 210 would get it, though aside from Pinnacle Social & Willpower there shouldn't be much more to significantly improve the odds of defusing Mariko.

[X] You may not like one of them, but you have a team now. You should make the best of it. Go find Kiba and Mariko, and have lunch.

For the simple reason that Daisuke doesn't halfass anything. The teams are set, complaining won't change the Hokage's decision.

Kurenai's report on the team might, but that happens in three foreseeable circumstances:
-Flunk down.
-Promoted past the team early(i.e. Daisuke must demonstrate not only Chunin skills, but also loyalty and leadership ability)
-One of the team members has to be sidelined by injuries, or other fatal issues.

Thus Daisuke has to do his best. If the team fails to work its damned well not going to be for lack of his effort.
And from the village perspective, a Genin team is going to be running errands, conveying messages, fighting bandits, etc.
The Jounin is a certified badass more than sufficient to make up for any strife or lacks in their teams for anything they can expect to encounter on a C rank.

If it doesn't work they'll just never approve higher rank missions.
I am also now wondering if Kairi is the one drawing all of Katsuragi's art IC, and she just follows Daisuke around sketching him in all his glory. Take 160 XP.
Horrifying
They actually don't stop them from learning ninjutsu. We have cites for Hinata / Neji learning various chakra natures by the time of the Fourth Shinobi War.

It's more that Gentle Fist uses both hands + Rotation is chakra intensive, so we don't see them use ninjutsu except in support situations. Hinata does know medical ninjutsu in anime, and uses it for healing. There's no cabal of Ye Olde Elders stifling the best and brightest of their own family to that extent.
And also that simply put the Gentle Fist + Byakugan is just THAT good that its very rare that there is a more efficient way than using it if you are trained in it. Even massed opponents are fine, a tiny chakra injection shuts them down, severs puppet strings or pops bunshins
For a Hyuuga I suspect the best use of ninjutsu is likely elemental bunshins, medical ninjutsu and...pretty much it really.

I'd disagree, I touched on this briefly previously but I think it team is very well constructed if you take out personalties as a factor (something that seems to have done)

See, there's Kiba, an awesome tracker with his Ninken, you can't escape him and it's difficult to sneak up on him due to the dog senses, so to speak, once he gets in close to you he can give you a lot of trouble with his clan techniques and style which will fuck up most Genin.

Then there's Mariko, she's a middling Shinobi, nothing amazing, however she knows more about Genjutsu than most and is noted to be decent at taijutsu with a strong build. Not only that she's a Yamanaka, if you need info extracted, or someone unable to fight when the battle starts, they'll do you well. Her Genjutsu, if levelled up and trained, will also help her with this, stalling enemies and letting her get close or paralyse them, once her melee team mates have attacked the genjutsu'd or paralysed enemies, she can swoop in to help.

We all know Daisuke, know his extreme talent in Taijutsu and Kenjutsu, recognised as a progidy in both by the Green Beast himself. We also know his extremely advanced Genjutsu he designed himself, a feat that hints to most that he could easily become a Genjutsu master with some guidance. He can stall an enemy and leave them vulnerable to him closing into to melee, then, it's all over.

This is a pursuit and skirmish team. Enemy long range combatants are shut down quickly by Yamanaka techniques, Genjutsu fuckery or ambush due to Ninken warnings. Once in Melee all of the team, once matured, will be able to fuck you up. Don't try running, they can find you with Ninken, and if they capture one of you then can extract information and go on to use it to fuck you harder.

Overall, this team is potentially brutal in small engagements, which make up most Ninja encounters, pursuit and patrol actions.

If they're chasing you, you're fucked.
Also, for all of Mariko and Daisuke's personal issues, Daisuke is the one genin outside of InoShikaCho who is familiar with the complications of Yamanaka techniques and how to support them. Remember the Mind Body Switch is a projected ray attack that stuns the Yamanaka regardless of success or failure. Shikamaru fills that role for Ino by immobilizing a target, and Chouji follows it up by being a giant meat tank to draw aggro from everyone else and probably not die.

He is also familiar with enough Inuzuka work to act as a secondary for Kiba if he's either unavailable or needing to perform more complex coordination. Inuzuka dogs are finicky, if Kiba is taken out of commission they could well lose both dog and master. In canon, I believe Hinata fills that role as she's so aggressively harmless that she could probably win Akamaru's trust fairly quickly.

From the Hokage table dossier perspective, the value of this team if it works is greater than the sum of its parts. And most of the parts can do fine if its defunct and the team dissolves.
Who cares? Kiba has a crush on our mom so he can deal with his sister having a crush on us.

Also Hana/Ino Dog/Cat fight when?!
Uchihas are the cats.
Ino is a boar. Shikamaru a deer. Chouji a butterfly.
I don't mind Kurenai. Sure, she got beaten by Itachi, but...so did literally everyone else he ever faced. Sasuke won because he literally died while trying to take a dive.

He punted Orochimaru so hard that Orochimaru developed A man crush obsession for him. To put it another way, Orochimaru chose to invade Konoha instead of trying to face Itachi again.
Also he got way further attacking Konoha than Itachi.

Itachi be hax.
We've been over this though: giving away Jutsu, especially self-created ones, to your friends is not acceptable in Shinobi culture. These are techniques meant for yourself, your blood, and your direct pupils. You don't pass on techniques to your friends because that devalues those techniques and makes yourself less unique.
Worth reemphasizing. The ninja world is not a modern state or even a renaissance state.
They are more like medieval mercenary companies/guilds, where keeping their competitive advantages secret is king, yet they must advertise WITH hints at those secrets to earn prestige and reputation to get their next hire.
As a general question do people feel that it's necessary to be friends with our teammates? It would certainly make things easier but these are just people we work with.

And if there are team conflict issues who is responsible for fixing it? Individual team members or the Sensei? Are there punishments for poor team cohesion?
Just that Daisuke would not halfass anything IMO. He dealt with Mariko back then by ignoring everything she did without consequences and retaliating exactly as much as is allowed when it does have consequences. Nothing new

Vesvius confirmed a while back on discord that this is not going to change dai's playstyle. He is going to remain Fighting/Sword focused.

Genjutsu is probably just going to supplement our swording. Which it was already doing.
