35th Day Of Light: Returning To The Graveyard, Making Markers
[] Leave: Go find the graveyard, and do what must be done. Their existences must not be forgotten.

===

The choice is not a difficult one. You slowly crawl up onto your paws, looking left; then right at the grey, hazy world and start forward down the hill. Gravel crunches under your paws, a veritable boom in comparison the small noise you'd made months ago.

How much I've grown, how much I've changed, how much... everything has changed.

You break the treeline moments later, shrugging off how the branches dig into your fur and scrape away the skin underneath. None of the discomfort truly registers to you as you plow straight on through. Here and there you can see the long faded signs of battle. Half-rotted shards of wood from when Gnaw tried to delete your best friend. Burns from where the Goblimon's fireballs had struck. However it's faded with time, new growth in the form of fresh vegetation eating away at the impact your friends and family made.

Soon... it'll all be gone. The only one who'll remember this will be Sparks.

The hollow feeling in your chest grows to outright painful proportions, temporarily consuming the world and drowning out the voices erupting back from the mine. None of it is important, you have something that has to be done.

Minutes pass and the sun gradually sets as you travel on, wandering towards the place you'd once believed to be the very safest place on this world. However you don't dare to make the final leg of the journey. Your home is gone, replaced by a crater, there's nothing left you or Sparks's lives there anymore.

Instead your mind makes the vaguest reference to the nearby landmarks. The stream where you'd once gone to fetch water for stew, the strange tree Gramps had cultivated to create chocolate pudding. You leave a trail of tears, but even through the sadness the back of your mind manages to use them as landmarks. Something to push you in the right direction.

Then, as the sun is threatening to finally dip under the horizon, you finally arrive.

Your caretaker's place of monuments stands untainted by the passage of time, the fence he'd built to guard the markers worn but still intact. With ponderous, mechanical steps, you edge your way along the barricade down towards the bottom of the hill, and find the narrow entrance still waiting, the dozens of graves visible.

"These..." The scarred mon's voice cracks for the first time you've heard in your entire life. A heavy sadness is laced in his voice. "This represents all the digimon I've lost. Those that never made it to champion under my care."

You reach towards the small opening, then pause as it proves too narrow for your shoulders to fit though. Back then you'd been a couple feet shorter and perhaps two thirds as wide. Now... now you're forced to rear up and turn sideways in order to squeeze inside.

"The world is a dangerous place. Filled with those who would prey on the weak. Who do prey on mon who can't defend themselves."

Back then you hadn't realize the true sadness of this place. What it represented. The dozens upon dozens of rookies who'd had their lives cut short, and Gramps... he'd dealt with all of it. Cared for them all. The old scarred Elecmon had lived with losing so many for so long but now... now he'd joined them.

"Wasn't always a caretaker Verge. A long time ago, before I built this village, I fought for a cause. I saw the horrors of war, I deleted others, many others to save myself. The Host, the Gloaming, all of it is just destruction. I can't convince Flamemon to leave his path but... Verge, you don't want to follow him. Spirits below, that only leads to pain."

And now... They're all gone because of The Gloaming. Count, his servants and Repulsa.

I'm going to kill them all.

Wetness flows freely down your cheeks but you ignore it in favour of glowering over the base of the hill.

There's... enough room. Room for... for all of them.

First you begin to dig, forming one small mound after another in what would be this place's final row of lost mon. You start with three, the tribute to your friends and the digimon who'd kept you safe. Then a fourth for Sorcerymon, and a final fifth for the dancing spider who'd been taken from his brothers.

None of you deserved what happened. Wha-what they did to you.

The memories of that night are still fresh in your mind. It would have been hard for them to fade given how they return to torment you almost every night. You look around for wood to use as a marker, but the only thing nearby that wouldn't take hours of work to shape is the barricade itself. You apologize to Gramps one last time, wince and get to work.

Not having actual hands makes the task harder then it would otherwise have been, but the planks are fitted together and tied with twine you gather from the nearby vegetation. None of it is well done but... they should last for a little while at least. It's... better than nothing. From there you gingerly begin to carve Digimoji into the wooden posts using a finger, careful to avoid toppling the hastily constructed graves.

Gramps.

"I want you both to understand why I've done what I have. Everything. All of it, was all to keep you safe."

"To protect what you love you have to make difficult choices. Even ones you hate, may The Ten forgive me."

"I did everything! None of the others were involved!"

Count backhands the old rookie, leaving him utterly defenseless as DarkLizardmon immolates him with dark fire.

Flamemon... no. Agnimon.

"I know you get frightened sometimes Verge, but listen up! There's a fire within you hotter than anything I can make! Believe me even if you don't believe in yourself, with it you can accomplish anything!"

"Yes! One day - and while it may not be soon it will come- you'll wake up, and find that you're not scared anymore. But until then..." The taller rookie slams a closed fist against his chest. "I'll protect you Verge. From the moment you hatched I've known that it was important that I help you."

"One day after I get strong enough, I'll leave the host to be a hero on his own. I swear that when that day comes! I want you to be with me. Together with Sparks we'll be the greatest three heroes the world has ever seen!"

Fu.

"Fufufu praise me!"

*Ptui*

"Don't worry! Big sis Fu will help!"

"I want to leave the village I'll find Gnaw and bring him back. I'm strong enough to do that now! He'll come and help and then we won't have to disband, I just know it!"

I-I could have told you to go. Then you wouldn't... wouldn't have been...

Musyamon's blade falls. Her head follows a mere moment later, eyes wide with confusion and fear.

You shudder from the memory, and look towards the fourth post.

Sorcerymon.

"Greeting new customer! Ah am Sorcerymon! Mer'chant extraordinaire!"

"But now ah have ta say, you have some potential, ah like ya little feller. Don' rightly know If it's sentimentality, but ah wants ta give you something.

"Treat it well little feller. After the festival finishes ah'll be gone fer a while. Maybe even a long while. But ah'll come back one day. Cer-tain-lee wouldn't mind taking ya on as an apprentice. Yer good with numbers and ah think yer great with learning. Could make fer a good merchant one day."

"Ah won't last! Get Sparks and lea-Ugh!"

And last there's Prancers marker. You hadn't been able to spend much time with the rookie, but he'd been the happiest of his brothers, always quick to try and make friends. In the end... that last part had lead to his deletion.

A black boot stomps down.

*Squish*

"Aaaaaaah!" Tanemon screams, her body showered with the data of her short-lived friend.

"But, little mole... I am a Liar."

When all is said and done you give the neatly arrayed line of graves one last look, not really caring enough to hide your tears. Constructing the graves hadn't done anything to appease the hazy sadness or depression, all it had done was make you tired. So with a sigh you lay down, just staring at the last remnants of those you'd once known.

Should... I make one for myself? I-I probably don't have much longer left and-

"Oooooh" A moan from above makes you sit up, eye narrowing to glare as a small solitary Bakemon crests the top of the hill. Your drills automatically rev up in anger as one of the most common forms of The Gloamings foot-soldiers begins slowly floating down over the graves.

A member of the Gloaming here? If they find out where or what this place is then... then they might destroy it!

It spots you a couple seconds later, and opens its mouth into a feral grin. The champion's hands lift up, and it twirls around mid-air as if in celebration. The undead digimon's white eyes flare to life, seemingly enthused.

You glare at the champion as it starts to rush towards you arms outstretched.

There's still time time, one cast of Holy Light Strike and this foul thing's existence would be ended. I can safeguard this place and weaken the Gloaming if only by one champion. But... this place. There's so much death. I-can I really do it?

=== Choose One:

[] Cast your spell, end this champion now and then get back to the others. It's already night, and you should warn them about the Gloaming's presence. Your mind feels a bit clearer now at least so... this worked somewhat you think.

[] There's... there's been enough deletion for now. You don't like it, but you don't think you could stomach another death right now. Just run away, and get back to the mine. You doubt this thing is fast enough to catch you.

They will not be merciful of us and we will not of them. That is.

Verge is just done at this point and this guy isn't making any threatening moves so I say leave him be.

Come to think of it, an abandoned graveyard is exactly the kind of place that I would expect a feral Bakemon to use as a home.

I prefer the Megaman X school of pacifism (ignoring X7). We will talk if they want to talk, we will not induce or indulge in violence but if some motherfucker starts petty evil shit we are stopping it

It'll backfire, but if Mercy is a weakness, then it's one that should be taken.

The location of this Bakemon, as well as how Bakemon are formed are reason enough for me to say that I would rather not engage in hasty violence. Namely the fact that Bakemon are formed from the remant data of mon at the moment of their deletion, and that this Bakemon is literally hanging around the graveyard of our comrades is... unsettling to say the least.

Even if this Bakemon does turn out to just be a small fry from the Gloaming, I would rather not take the risk. Plus killing on hallowed ground would go against the memory of everymon who is memorialised here.

Okay, something very strange is going on here. A Bakemon is arguably weaker than a standard Drimogimon, especially since we can literally tear their sheet to shreds with our drills. Why wouldn't it take off to report our location, instead of closing in to melee like that? And why the twirl?

Of course, if Todorius is right, and this Bakemon is one or more of our lost friends' data that's been reformatted into this form... that means that they haven't reincarnated correctly, if at all. Which is kind of horrifying. In a case like that, would it be more merciful to put them down and let them pass on?

Screw it. Either this is a hostile Bakemon from the Gloaming or one of our loved ones Came-Back-Wrong.

Abandoning the graveyard to this guy just rubs me the wrong way

If that is the case I think the Bakemon would deserve a more dignified death, preferably not on hallowed memorial ground at the very least. Although how aware Verge can be of the Bakemon's previous identity is an unknown so its unlikely we're going to have a chance to talk to the ghost champion.

A Ghost just so happens to turn up in this particular graveyard? Yeah no not chancing that sinde these things are born from left over data of deleted strong rookies and chamoions.

Also I don't like the Idea of deleting mon on sight due to their spieces and assuming their allegiances and the fact it close to night which generally means strong mons come out.

On another note night time is coming. Starting a noisy and possible flashy battle is not a good idea given the timing. Strong wild digimon would be more active during this period and may well be attracted to the noise. Additionally, the Bakemon itself would be empowered by the night. If nothing else I would say that from a practical standpoint we don't want to start a pitched battle right here. Not to mention the fact that us being here in the graveyard is already putting us behind schedule and delaying our important mission.

Now that we're back in this area maybe we can possibly learn a few things like what happend to the Mochimon and Tanemon.

Or what Geo's up too.

Or what ever the Dark Zone happened to this Prick!
You take a look up just in time to see something blurring down towards Flamemon. You see a flash of quickly flapping short wings, dark cruel looking claws and a pair of overly large red circular eyes which star. The monster reaches out to grasp the two of you and-
This bird brain nearly killed us in the beginning and I'm pretty sure he never was taken care of. So I'm going to bet this prick is still around and probably stronger because Digimon.

Don't forget Gigimon either, now that I've been reminded of him. At the same time we also met a Betamon on our way out, so there are a lot of potential mon we could bump into while we're out here.
