As An Eagle Flies (A House Arryn Quest)

In The Vale: Good Times
In The Vale: Good Times

The Raven from the citadel to say that Spring had came was something that brought cheer to all in the vale. It's people saw the end of a struggle, and a new beginning, both for you, and for themselves.

You saw Spring as something great, and new.

-[X] Recruit Ser Brynden into your Retinue: You shall ask Ser Brynden to be in your retinue. Rolled:1D100 => 83+40=123

Ser Brynden was at the Bloody Gate with the rest of the Order, as you came to him.

"Ser Brynden." You said the man's name with a quiet but respectful tone. He was the only man among the order you had absolute trust in. "May I speak to you?"

The knight smiled. "Actually arstan, I was about to come and speak with you." He stated.

"Oh." You made a small noise of confusion, and raised an eyebrow. "What about it?" You asked.

"I've heard you were looking for a warrior of great renown to travel with you in the Vale, and I am willing to curtail a few certain duties to do that." He replied. The way he said it filled you with great worry.

"Why have you suddenly wanted to join my services Brynden?" You dropped the titles. "You are already a powerful man in my father's employ? Why work directly for me?"

Brynden sighed. "My brother wishes to marry me to a woman that I do not love, and there is another I have sworn my hand to." He stated. "I need another… powerful supporter to give me that blessing."

Ah… "Who's the woman?" You asked.

Brynden smiled. "That is a secret young Falcon." He stated as he pushed you away from him.

He then threw over a sword. "On guard, I want to see your footwork, your duel with Marq showed me you need more training!" He barked.

Reward: The Blackfish has joined your retinue. ??? will soon be wed to him. He gives you a few more bruises in training.

Lord Hoster Tully is not happy with him, and may send men to take him back to the Riverlands.

-[X] Spend Time with Your Father: You want to spend time with your father, outside of an official capacity. Rolled: 1D100 => 79+40=119

Your father gave a long sigh as he sat near the window, looking out to the mountains of the moon, and the Giant's lance. "You know, for a long time, I was afraid for you Arstan. Afraid that I was… far from a good father. Or a good lord. I thought I would be giving you great hardship and burden you with my injuries."

"You are not a burden father." You replied kindly as you sat next to him. "You are just as able as you were before. And I learned a lot in King's Landing. And from you." You replied.

For a moment, you thought you saw a tear fell from his eye but he turned away, to gaze outside the window. "Thank you." He replied.

He than took a deep breath. "Than I am sure you will be able to rule the Vale well in my stead." He stated.

What? "Father? What do you mean?" You asked.

"The king has asked me to King's Landing. To serve as his Master of Laws." He replied.

"Your leaving? Father it's only been a year since we returned home? You have another son-" You tried to list things off, but your father raised his hand.

"I know. Rowena and myself will take Alyx to King's Landing, you will rule here with Rhaella, at the Eyrie." He replied.

You huffed, before looking out the window, taking in the view. "Are you afraid of leaving us again?" You asked

Your father nodded. "Yes. But are young, with a full life ahead of you… I'm an older man who has seen his small boy grow into a great man." He paused. "I am proud of the man in front of me. You should be too." He stated.

Reward: Jon Arryn is leaving to Serve as Master of Laws. You are now the Acting Lord of the Vale.

You may now (and now must) take Three Actions regarding the State of the Vale.

-[X] Spend Time with Rhaella: You gave a smile to her as she breastfed Aemma. "We did it." You smiled. Rhaella smiled back. "I know." Rolled:1D100 => 100+40=140

Rhaella rocked Aemma to sleep in your bed as she softly finished singing an old Valyrian Lullaby.

As your daughter softly slept, Rhaella leaned on you, allowing your little girl to take your fingers. "We did this." You said as you nibbled her ear, causing Rhae to giggle.

"I know." She said.

There was a small calm as you both enjoyed watching the little white haired girl slumber.

"Rhae…" You said her name quietly as she leaned against your arm. "We've had such a busy time… I must wonder, while I'm in gulltown, do you want me to get you anything?"

Rhaella smiled. "Some books would be pleasant." She replied. "I believe there is a story that fits us quite well."

"Oh… and what is that?" You asked with a small grin on your face.

Rhaella grinned back. "Oh, just a story of a prince and his princess, who should have been bitter and lonely with each other, despite knowing each other for their entire lives… who learned to bond and love with their children."

You raised an eyebrow. "And why would you like that book?"

"Because it is like our love…" She slowly gave a small grin, and revealed her bare shoulder, allowing her dress to sag low onto her arm. "With a very notable exception."

You would have agreed with her, but Aemma began to coo, and you both decided that, with your daughter with you, your fun could wait.

Reward: Pregnancy Rolls now begin. Rhaella is now your lover, and will never betray you without reason
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Aemma sang before she talked. Your daughter was singing the same lullaby her mother sang to her, with a voice as clear as an angel, and a pitch so well, that you thought it came from her mother.

But it came from the little baby sitting on your bed, clasping your hand.

Reward: Aemma gains the Trait Genius: You are among the Brightest minds of Westeros, smart, capable, and driven. Things come easy (You have a 50/50 chance of becoming skilled in any skill when you learn it. +10 to all rolls)

-[X] Spend Time with Rowena: You will spend time with your stepmother. She seems to rather distrust your choices and believes you would be a terrible influence for Alyx. Rolled: 1D100 => 7+40=47

Rowena…. Did not allow you anywhere near her. She claimed that you were a heretic and traitor of the Vale for consorting with a Woodswitch of the Mountains, and allowing that woman to touch her child.

Even as your father protested, and wished for you to join them both in eating your meals as a family, Rowena did not believe it.

Failure

-[X] The Septon of the Rivers: Marberad wishes to gather the Veterans of the War of the Twelve Crowns, and talk about your experiences there. He also wishes to write them down. Rolled: 1D100 => 90

Marberad did his talks with the veterans… but they were just joyful stories of valor and hardship, of the soldiering life… and the dissatisfaction about being home.

They were frightened of themselves, thinking that the cries of their children, the woods or the wind to be the enemy.

He went all over the Vale and the Riverlands and the Crownlands, and the stories were all the same.

Marberad than asked Coleman to write his findings, than sent three copies across the REalm. First to the High Septon, another to the Maesters, and the last to the King himself.

These men were injured, not physically, but within the mind. And he wanted to find out how, and why.

Reward: Marberad has dove headfirst in the new Crisis in Westerosi Nobility and Soldier's class. That of returning soldiers suffering from an unknown ailment.

He has dubbed it, The Battles Grip. They see and hear the battles they have fought in, along with the friends they have lost in them.

-[X] The Tourney: Your father is hosting a tourney to celebrate the birth of your child, and your brother. Rolled:1D100 => 10+30=40

Your ability to be an outstanding warrior were cut short… by equally outstanding warriors from Hyle Hunter, to Marq Grafton to Uncle Yohn and Brynden the Blackfish.

You didn't stand a chance at beating those men.

But Marq was the one who got you, in the second to last round, before winning it all against Uncle Yohn.

Reward: You fought in the tourney and lost to Marq Grafton in the second to last round.

He laughed as he beat you, but in the playful kind.

He then won the tourney itself.

-[X] Buy Items/Gear: You have quite a bit of money from the bounties from the War… Maybe you can invest that money into something useful for yourself. Rolled:1D100 => 97

There were many rare items that have come into Gulltown thanks to the War ending, and the Steptsones being cleared.

(Continued in: The Wealthy Markets of Gulltown)

Nope, not fucking happening. We will get along with our little brother, woman, wether you like it or not. Him leaving without us being sucessfull at that first just screams of possible blood feud later which will fucking suck.

Ha-hah! Thank you again, Helen. Your totally expected backstabbing will have to be quite severe indeed to make me stop thanking you.

Aemma is going to be growing up even quicker than our freakish rate. We are going to see a damn legend come out of her even if, by tradition, she is unlikely to see her inherit unless things go terribly wrong.

Eh, knowing what might happen, if we do something crazy like end a six thousand year long blood feud with the Mountain Clans, we still might just end up in a civil war because our Step mother is a gods dammed idiot.

She didn't even backstab you, our Stepmom is just a crazy zealous and racist bitch.

Well... You haven't seen Bael yet. Or the Targaryen Twins. Or New and Improved Bobby B.

Or dear old Ned Stark.

Or any more children coming our way soon.

Or the Mountian clans.

Fun times are coming.

Edit: And what about that other faction that seem to hate our guts to high hell.

We need to come to an understanding with step mum. Can't have her spreading her craziness.
Knowing her, she probably is one of those Andal Racists who see us as a half breed for Jon's decision to take a Royce (a first man house) instead of another Andal house.

And maybe it is a little too crazy when it comes to keeping the Arryn line pure of any foreign filth.

If we don't fix this she's going to poison her son against us at which point a viable male heir to the Vale will exist when compared to our daughter.

The Mother
The Mother:

(Rowena POV)

You had many thoughts about the man that was your stepson. Many thoughts indeed to describe your inexcusable horror, disgust and downright hatred of this… man who claimed to be of the noble line of Arryn, that only the purest of the Andal kings and lords descended from, and could trace their roots back to the Andal invasion of Westeros, and Andalos itself.

Those savages of the Vale, who were not of pure Andal Stock, were… disposable. Of course, you were not blind to reality… or rather the reality of your husband.

That man, strong as he was, and as smart as he was… was far too naive. It filled you with great worry… and a question that ached in your mind.

How was he not killed by his vassals?

He seemed to hold himself as an equal to the men below him expecting subservience through respect, rather than fear.

They were lesser than him and should have bowed to him the moment he took his throne over them. He should have placed his boots on them and stamped down on those who did not follow his commands and praise those who did.

Of course, Jon never heard her words, in fact, she made sure her words never left her mind, save for the moments that would make him swo and listen to you.

He adored you, and he adored the fact he had another child.

You adored that as well.

Alyx would be a fine Lord of the Vale. You would make sure of that. He would be as strong as the Warrior, as Just as the Father, as Kind as the Mother and as ruthless as the Stranger.

He would be the one who would destroy the savages of the mountains… once and for all.

Of course, there was one problem with you're… sons destiny.

His Brother, Arstan.

He was everything that you despised. He was a great warrior but refused to use his blade on those savages, preferring to consort with them and see them as allies, rather than as the filth they were.

That witch did something to your son, you just knew it. That witch made a pact with that boy, and Arstan cared not for the consequences, only that it was done.

The Maesters said nothing was wrong with your son, but you knew better.

That witch did something to him… and you would destroy that woman when you found her.

"Rowena, is everything alright?" Jon asked as he put his hand on your shoulder.

But for now, you had a role to play… the dutiful lady.

And the scorned stepmother.

AN: Enjoy.

Rowena is honestly utterly stupid. Arstan is too beloved by the King, the people of Westeros, his Father, the Prince, and the Vale Lords to really even be deposed. Her husband is far too old, and wounded which can cause issues the older he gets. Her being a bitch to her step-son only invites him to treat her as most Lords would which is to get rid of her via sticking her with religion. Aka, Silent Sisters/Faith. You know the great thing? Once dad's dead no-one can stop him... so she really fucked up.

Rowena is honestly utterly stupid.
So is Cersei. Just because people don't think things through doesn't mean in their minds they believe they're right.

Edit: What matters to them, is that they believe they are right,

Her wanting to kill all of the Mountian Clans would also be met with praise from the Vale lords.

But if he were to suffer an untimely accident? Then things would get very interesting indeed.

Jon's only 43, and despite his wound, he's still pretty active in the court life, and is still very politically powerful.

Give it time and shit can get real.

Except for tradition. Kinslaying is a very bad thing.

That's entirely true, but at the same-time, if Arstan can create a peace or get rid of them with less gold, less bodies and less deaths they'll likely take that too. Of course if he does suffer an untimely accident things get interesting, especially for her since I'm sure servants noticed her calling him a heretic and such rather loudly. Yes, Jon's 43. But in medieval times while not old per say, its still old enough to be looked at with worry considering forties are when things do begin that transition of falling apart. Especially for someone like Jon who you know has been to war, wounded, the life-time of training, the constant pressure of being a Lord and being Lord-Paramount add in fighting the war - then being Master of Laws.

I would like to state, Arstan killing her is utterly unlikely when disposing of troublesome female relatives by putting them into the Faith is allowed and last I checked really not even frowned upon considering how many characters in the book series were all for originally sticking Cersei and Myrcella into the Silent Sisters/Septas as a way of depriving them of power.

Yeah, the Silent Sisters sound good. Moon Door is off limits unless Rowena crossed a line.

Our best role models from OTL lords would be Tywin minus the pettiness and Ned. Be wise and reasonable with the carrot, but don't hesitate with the stick if need be.

Tywin is... not really the best. He viewed his family as pawns in the game to cement the family legacy.

And ned... wasn't ruthless enough. He had mercy, yes, and was great at using his power, but he offered it to the wrong people when he was not in control, lacked power, and out of his element.

That's my point - take the best from both.

And Ned Stark was a victim of the Peter Principle - competent as Lord of the North, but ill-prepared for King's Landing politics because it was a very different game.

Eh. I imagine they'd actually prefer an outright final solution considering history, even at some loss of life. The clansmen have been slitting throats for millennia, raping and reaving and generally acting like the wildlings they share common ancestry with. And knights and nobles have a whole currency of prestige built around showing zeal and martial prowess... and that was before recent economic pressures gave them a reason to move in for a land grab.

Fighting in the mountains is hard, not the place their combat doctrine really shines, but our fellow valemen would march out laughing if they thought they had enough of an ace up their sleeve. Gold and lives be damned. Even our recent cartography could be enough.

Now, yes, we don't want that for obvious moral reasons. But we're weird. As is, though, diplomacy will probably be brutal enough to partially satiate the lords of the vale.

"We'll give you these concessions. All this and more. But when any man, any clan comes down out of these mountains to steal so much as a peasant's left sock or so much as hurt a milkmaid's feelings... well, you are going to find the lot of them strung like decorations between mountain peaks. And then I'll be coming personally to ask some very pointed questions. Are we clear?"

And the funny thing is that such a promise would probably make some of the mountain clansmen smile.

Eh... Maybe not common ancestry, but definitely cultural ancestry.

yeah. and with the baby boom going on right now, we might have more then a few willing knights ready to sacrifice themselves for this kind of murder.

Well, I believe an old quote from the American Indian wars (Paraphrased, of course, I don't have the quote on me at the moment) is appropriate.

"Indian warfare is the vilest and despicable and harshest of all the warfare perpetrated by man. But it must be done by those with the willingness to stomach the actions we must partake in to secure the peace and prosparity of our people." (Eugene Asa Carr Colonel US Army)

Well, here's the thing... We are in the position of strength. And we will always remain in that position unless we fuck ups badly.

We know it, The Clans know it (save for a few stubborn ones) and the lords know it, which is why they are not in a hurry to rush to genocide them.

I, personally, would rather see the Clansmen gone than treat with them. Though the last time I touched this topic I got banned. So just going to leave that.

I feel ya, I actually think that Arstan getting rid of the more savage Clans like the Burned Men first before we invite the other Clans to the table would be fairly beneficial to us.

It would allow the Vale Knights an outlet for all that hatred by wholly exterminating an Enemy they have been fighting with for ages before we point at the Clans that would accept peace and say "See them? They are afraid, they know they are no match for a proper Vale Knight and his Lance so now they bow."

And considering the fact that not all Clans will stop their raiding we can use them as a target to keep the Valemen happy.

Next turn we should probaly chose the Road Action against the Burned Men, Ride with the Order and other Military actions against unruly Clansmen as well as going to the Meeting with them. Would stack the deck in our favor imo.

Fucking called it. God bloody dammit woman, if it wasn't for the fact that you were our baby brother's mother and the old man's current wife...
Tsk, no matter (for now), it seems we have some shit to clean up in the mountains, unless the majority decides to go Naruto Talk-no-jutsu mode, which is kinda fine to me as well, though we have to make sure we won't fuck up.

well too bad Rowena is insane. Looks like we will finally have to use that plot action next turn.

We could engineer a faux pas for her that would result in her being sent to the silent sisters.

Not possible as next turn she's leaving for King's Landing with our father. What we should do is send a letter to the Aerys and Joanna to be weary of her, they'll believe us. Both of them are also competent in subterfuge.
